Synthesizing Observations and Theory to Understand Galactic Magnetic Fields: Progress and Challenges. (arXiv:1912.08962v1 [astro-ph.GA])

Constraining dynamo theories of magnetic field origin by observation is indispensable but challenging, in part because the basic quantities measured by observers and predicted by modelers are different. We clarify these differences and sketch out ways to bridge the divide. Based on archival and previously unpublished data, we then compile various important properties of galactic magnetic fields for nearby spiral galaxies. We consistently compute strengths of total, ordered, and regular fields, pitch angles of ordered and regular fields, and we summarize the present knowledge on azimuthal modes, field parities, and the properties of non-axisymmetric spiral features called magnetic arms. We review related aspects of dynamo theory, with a focus on mean-field models and their predictions for large-scale magnetic fields in galactic discs and halos. Further, we measure the velocity dispersion of HI gas in arm and inter-arm regions in three galaxies, M 51, M 74, and NGC 6496, since spiral modulation of the root-mean-square turbulent speed has been proposed as a driver of non-axisymmetry in large-scale dynamos. We find no evidence for such a modulation and place upper limits on its strength, helping to narrow down the list of mechanisms to explain magnetic arms. Successes and remaining challenges of dynamo models with respect to explaining observations are briefly summarized, and possible strategies are suggested. With new instruments like the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), large data sets of magnetic and non-magnetic properties from thousands of galaxies will become available, to be compared with theory.

Cammell Laird Splashes New RoRo Ship for Red Funnel

The Red Kestrel, a new freight-only RoRo vessel, will operate between Southampton and Isle of Wight.

The 1,070 gross ton newbuild will officially join the fleet on arrival in Southampton, and enter service in May 2019, following a trials and training period.

The launch event marks the debut of Red Funnel’s first dedicated RoRo freight ship since the company’s inception.

“We are delighted by today’s launch of Red Kestrel…We’re thrilled that not only will Red Kestrel increase our total capacity and enhance convenience for our cross-Solent customers but we also take tremendous pride in supporting the revival of world-class shipbuilding in this country,” Fran Collins, CEO of Red Funnel, commented.

“We are especially proud to be working for a British ferry company, winning the contract against international competition,” Tony Graham, Cammell Laird Chief Operating Officer, said, adding that the shipyard sees a big market in ferry repair, conversion and newbuild.

Red Kestrel is Red Funnel’s first ship to be designed for freight traffic. As a freight vessel, it is limited to 12 passengers and constructed specifically to provide additional year-round freight capacity for Red Funnel’s Southampton-East Cowes route, which currently handles 53% of all freight movements across the Solent.

At 74 meters in length, the newbuild will provide 265 lane meters of roll-on/roll-off freight capacity.

To minimize the environmental footprint, the hull shape has been designed specifically to reduce wash and a propulsion package has been selected to make the vessel highly fuel efficient whilst meeting the latest Tier III emission regulations. The use of azimuth thrusters will also make the ship very maneuverable, according to Cammell Laird.

The crossing time of 55-60 minutes will be identical to Red Funnel’s existing Raptor class RoPax ships and Red Kestrel will use the same berths in Southampton and East Cowes.

Based in the UK port of Southampton, Red Funnel carries 2.3 million passengers and over 800,000 vehicles on its ferry route between the UK port of Southampton and East Cowes and 1.1 million passengers between Southampton and West Cowes on its Red Jet Hi-Speed service.

A Poem About My Travels (Yosemite National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A Poem About My Travels I Really Love Seeing This Planet So many wondrous things to behold My goal is to visit the national parks, But a forest or mountain can be just as sublime I've seen prairie grass sway in a passing breeze While bison roam badlands and the Little Mo Bears standing on a waterfall waiting for salmon Stood at the lowest point on this continent And seen the snow capped peaks of Denali A river valley burning of man's destruction Turned to a river flowing free and healed again Glaciers carving out mountains and peaks A lake filled from an exploded mountain Arches, canyonlands, hoodoos and a place called Zion To the first park of this nation and Tetons nearby Felt the woods of sequoias and others petrified over time So many more tales and exploration done But I can't also become that cruel thing Who over loves it as that will be sure To kill as much as love So today I will write a story, A poem if you will, and only speak words. Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one afternoon in Yosemite National Park from Tunnel View overlook. The setting is looking to the east-northeast across the forested landscape present in Yosemite Valley looking to El Capitan, Half Dome, and other peaks and ridges of the Central Yosemite Sierras. My thinking in composing this image was to capture a look across that view with the sunlight cutting across the valley while the peaks and ridges remained in shadows in the afternoon hours and mostly clouds skies. I did some initial post-processing work, making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation in DxO PhotoLab 5. I then exported a TIFF image to Nik Color Efex Pro 4 where I added a Polarization, Foliage and Pro Contrast filter for that last effect on the image captured.

I captured this image while I was hiking the Juniper Canyon Loop. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with DxO PhotoLab 6. I then exported a TIFF image to Nik Color Efex Pro 5 where I added a Polarization, Foliage, and Pro Contrast filter for that last effect on the image captured.

Contrail Criss-cross and the Moon (Joshua Tree National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the east while taking in views across of rock formations present along the Arch Rock Nature Trail in Joshua Tree National Park. Which drew me into the setting were the two airplanes that had seemingly criss crossed the other with their contrails flying above. There was also the moon that was just starting to rise above the Pinto Mountains off in the distance. I used the nearby rock formations in the foreground to lead to this skies above view. I think it added a contrast to the blues of the skies with its earth-tones.

One Day in Yosemite National Park Just Isn’t Enough!
