Prompt Drabbles #1

Hello everyone! I'm Hailey (For those of you who don't know me) and I'm pretty new to the Hawaii Five-0 Fandom. I'm wicked happy to be here and super stoked to write some fics! I have quite a few of them floating around my drive and I wanted to start getting them out there. I wanted to start small with some drabbles and work my way up from there. Get the characters right and such. I have a feeling I'm going to be picking on Danny a lot I felt drawn to his character and you all know how that goes.

Please note that I do not have a beta so there will be an odd mistake here and there and I apologize in advance for that!

The word prompt I was given for this Drabble was "Nightmares" and it turned into something very interesting which later inspired a couple of different supernatural Au's that I currently have in the works!

And I'm rambling. Enjoy the fic, I hope y'all like it! -H

The basement was freezing and dark, the only light he could see was a flickering bulb hanging precariously from the ceiling. Swaying it cast shadows. Shadows that somehow danced and whispered to him. Laughed, wept, mocked, and growled. Danny forced back screams of his own in a poor attempt to be defiant against the demons in the dark. 

The air was tainted with copper, and something so sickly sweet that Danny had to swallow repeatedly in order to keep whatever was left in his stomach from making an epic return. The only thing left in this place was death and despair. There was no hope here for it had left long before he was even born. Cursed the locals said. A wound left to fester bitter against anything good in the world. 

The bulb flickered again, buzzing and clicking at him in warning. Danny shifted off the bottom step onto the dirty blood encrusted floor. His steps echoed like thunderclaps and voices whispering all around him hushed. As if they were a crowd quieting for a performance. Now it was much too quiet. 

The light fizzed and popped the closer he got to the center of the room. He was unwelcome there. More so than any one of the locals; he was a Haole after all. Danny’s breath caught in his throat as the light above him flared back to life. 

Settled in front of him was a barrel. 

Scrambling backward, Danny on pure reflex alone pulled his weapon from its holster. The laughter that came from the dark - churning like a vortex -  made him scowl. No matter how long it has been what happened to Mattie will forever cut him like a serrated blade. This wasn’t real. He was no longer in a basement, but his own mind. Danny watched as the small enclosed space grew exponentially. One by one a hanging bulb flickered on and beneath that light was another barrel. Names of the people he loved on the side of each and every single one of them. 

There were no ghosts here. Only parlor games. 

Taking a deep breath he closed his eyes and listened. Really listened. The whispers now only tickled the back of his mind as they should. Warning him, not taunting. Thunder rumbled and rain poured down on the roof way above him. The sound of distant sirens eased some of his tension. Gripping his service weapon tightly Danny listened as another walked around him. Shifting in the dark, waiting. Breathing. Not dead like they had originally thought. 

Danny had to give it to them; whoever they were. It was pretty ingenious. Build off of a local legend and just let the stupid roll in. A never-ending feast. The air shifted around him again as the creature surged forward with only one thing in mind. Feed. Danny only had a split second to save himself. Bringing up his gun he spun around and fired. 

Looking down at the man Danny cocked his head to the side. He was sure Max would conclude after an autopsy that it was a vampire. A completely rabid one at that, it didn’t care who its next meal was or how he got it. Pressing his lips together he saw decomposing spots on the vampire's hands and face; shaking his head Danny moved on. Taking the stairs two at a time he pushed his way through the derelict house so he could meet his team. Multiple weapons were trained on him for only just a moment before Steve was on him. 

“Jesus Danny, what the hell? Are you okay?” 

Danny waved him off and shouted over to Duke to call Max and CSU. “Damn Vampires,” he grumbled to his partner and inclined his head slightly. “No offense Chin,” 

The Lieutenant smiled wryly at him. “No worries Brah, I know you love me.” 

Steve snorted and squeezed Danny’s shoulder, a sign saying ‘We’ll talk about it later,’ 

Kono grinned and the rain tapered off. She shook her head her brows furrowing in confusion,

 “Are you telling me that this was a vamp the entire time?” 

Danny shook the water from his hair and shrugged, “He had a flair for the dramatic. Rabid. I think he may have had help. Some heavy-duty witchcraft down there.” 

A tense silence fell over the team. “Damn,” it was all something they could agree on. The Vampiric disease was spreading and they had no clue how it came to be or how to stop it. All they knew was that it turned Vampires, who could be some of the sanest people left on the planet, certifiable. Psychopathic. Almost animalistic in their killing; drinking more than should be possible. They’re decaying, falling apart and the only thing that holds them together was blood. And a lot of it. The only sure thing they knew was that it was a curse. A very powerful one. 

Danny only hopes that they can find the source before the disease reaches too close to home.

🤮😡Thanks, but no thanks. We had one big EMO episode last season (9.12 z and the sole purpose of 9. 12 was to reconciliate Danny and Rachel. Which left a more than stale taste on the episode). Looks like TPTB forgot everything about the badass cop from Jersey‼️ We aren't interested in more drama, we want BAMF Danny. Little do they know about Danny fans per se 🤦‍♀️

Thoughts on 10x22

These are my thoughts about S10e22. It is long.

Going into this knowing what is about to happen is nerve-wracking.

Knowing that Wo Fat was behind all of it makes it so much worse.

Again with, she was the one that got away bullshit. And I am realizing now that this is Lincoln who gives Steve's plane number to Catherine. And now I like him a lot less.

The horrified look in Steve's eyes and the desperate cries of Danny's name. This shit is going to hurt. He did not just walk through fire for Danny. How can anyone after this think that Steve is hung up on Catherine? He is this close to tears from watching the footage alone.

What do you mean he shouldn't be making jokes? Isn't that the only way to deal with trauma? I also love how Danny looks so unimpressed.

The person he cares about most. Goddammit. That is the truest thing I have ever heard and, that just makes the ending so much more unbelievable. Also, Mary and Joanie still exist and, even though I don't want them kidnapped, it is still something to think about. Oh, and bringing up his father, low blow. What stubbornness? Anton died. 

Bamf Danny Williams right here. Like this man saved himself. My shoulders are already dead thinking about having to heaf myself up like that. And he is more than 20 years older than me and just got beaten, and the day before so, holy crap. How he shot that second man, brutal, I love it. The stupid man behind the door ruined everything if it wasn't for him then Danny would have been sitting on the porch, waiting for Steve. Could you imagine the hilarity of that? 

Danny got shot twice, I always thought only once. When was the first shot fired, though? When he got taken, or after that? 

How he is holding Danny in his arms, omg.

That scene where he is running beside the gurney, how many times has this happened before now? This way or the other way around. The only correct answer is too many. I was so ready for Steve to slide down the wall because his feet gave out. 

The sniffling, the red eyes, how tight he is holding his hands together like if he lets go he is going to fall apart. I think we know that Steve is not a religious man but, the fact that he is praying makes it look even worse like, he doesn't have the faith himself that Danny is going to be okay. And who let Steve out of their sight? Steven, no, that is not how this goes understood. You will both live because if one of you dies, the other does too.

Lincoln, not the time. Ask Lou or Adam, not Steve at the moment. What Steve needs is cuddles and for Danny to be okay.

Why does it feel like giving away his gun is symbolism for leaving. 

The music when Steve steps into Danny's room is making me cry.

It shows in this scene that Danny knows exactly what Steve needs. Reassures, banter, get the bad guy. I get why Steve went but really, are you kidding me? No, Steve needs to put his ass back in that chair, hold Danny's hand and stay there. Sorry, but I can't imagine them just leaving Danny in the hospital alone. 

She is running in heels that is impressive. And now also climbing. I overestimated the height of her heels but still. Also, the docks with Victor Hesse and now again with Daiyu Mei. The beginning and the end.

I would have loved the takedown more, if it was Lou that interrupted Steve's chat with her. Adam had his chat at the beginning of the episode and, Lou ends, the thing with Steve. They have known him the longest besides Danny, it would have made more sense. 

So that we are all clear, Danny raving on about Hawaii has to do with the fact, he doesn't want Steve to leave. Also, Danny blaming Steve for making him like Hawaii actually means that Danny likes Hawaii because Steve is there and he loves Hawaii. 

Steve knows very well that Danny disagrees with him leaving.

This is hurting them both and, it is hurting me. Steve looks so fond and in love when he is hugging Danny, the smile. He is holding him so tight, while Danny is not because it hurts. It is probably a combination of him hurting, and the thought of if he holds Steve any tighter then, he is not going to be able to release him, which hurts.

Why would you make him pause and not go back? That is cruel.

Stupid Steve, 'look after danno' why don't you do it yourself, asshole.

The individual goodbyes hurt so bad. Everyone is crying. And now that I am writing this, I am going to start crying again.

The text. Throw salt in an open wound, why don't you? 

Stupid Catherine, why did she have to come back? She could have just cracked the code and never to be heard from again.

The ending was so bad. We all know why I am not getting into that now. They had an okay ending right there. Danny and Steve on the beach could have been the ending but not. And I don't have anything against Steve taking a vacation, traveling the world but not like this and not without Danny and especially not with Catherine. 

While I was watching this, I was sobbing. I am an ugly crier and, I was afraid I was going to wake up my mom.

I am kind of mad that Chin and Kono were rarely brought up after they left because they are ohana. It could have been the smallest, oh, I talked to Chin this morning, blah blah. That easy, the actors wouldn't even have to show up. 

At the goodbyes, I am missing some people. For example, Kamekona, Flippa, Nahele, Charlie, and Rachel or any other people I have missed. Did he say goodbye to Charlie? Or does Danny have to break it to him later? Also, does Grace know? She would be mad. Did he talk to Mary? Questions and no answers.

Everybody looks at Lieutenant Commander Steven John McGarrett, a former Navy SEAL standing at an impressive 6 feet, and thinks yes. They expect Steve to kick down doors, to flip over perps and pin them down to the floor, to leap off five-story buildings and manage to land on his feet. They look at Steve and there’s no doubt in their minds that he can get the job done, that he can go harder and further and faster than most men. Everybody looks at Lieutenant Commander Steven John McGarrett and thinks danger, and they would be right.

Danny supposes that it should irk him, that it should gnaw at him in that small, squirrelled away part of himself that he pretends was beaten out of him in highschool when everybody around him shot up 6 inches overnight while he stayed a stubborn 5 foot 4. He supposes that he should feel something at the fact that people look at Steve and forget to look past Steve, to the man standing next to him. 

A lesser man, perhaps, would be bothered by how much his partner seemed to outshine him. Would be bothered by how he’s considered an afterthought, how he’s a footnote in the ebbs and flows of Steven John McGarrett. Danny isn’t a lesser man.

Danny is the oldest sibling of four, so he knows what it’s like to blend into the background. It isn’t that Danny’s parents didn’t love him, or care about him, or anything as morose as that; it’s just that their attention was split - because it wasn’t easy raising four children on the salary of a firefighter and a nurse, and Danny grew up much quicker than anybody else his age. He’s used being an afterthought, to filling in roles without gratitude or acknowledgement, because it’s just always been his job.

Besides, there’s something to be said for blending into the background, for being underestimated and overlooked. It gives one a certain advantage that Danny has come to depend on, because it makes him a better cop, a better detective.

After all, if everyone’s watching Steve and his gymnastic-style flips and overly extravagant explosions, nobody’s watching Danny calmly load his gun and fire two clean shots into the head of the man who’s been holding three little girls who’re barely over the age of 15 hostage for the past two weeks. 

He isn’t completely altruistic mind you, and there’d be a very good chance that Danny would’ve turned his gun on Steve if Steve had also decided to overlook Danny; or on anyone in his team for that matter. Danny might not need the pomp and the praise, but he isn’t above knowing when he’s done a good job, and wanting to be appreciated from time to time. He’s only human after all.

Mostly though, Danny’s okay with playing the shadow to Steve’s spotlight. It makes for extremely entertaining moments, like staring down a General of the United States Army from Steve’s bedside in Afghanistan, when he asks Danny to step outside and Danny says, “No, no. I’m gonna stay right here with him.” 

It isn’t meant to be a power move, even though Danny can tell from the way the man’s hands ball into fists and his jaw clench that the General sees it as one - it’s just meant to be a simple statement of fact. Danny’s place is next to Steve, and truly, it’s on the General for assuming that Danny was going to be anywhere else. 

Next to Steve, Danny knows that he seems easy-going, unobtrusive, harmless in comparison. Danny’s okay with that, because it’s much better than people knowing the truth: that it’s not hard going through Steve, it’s hard going through Danny.
