hello mod goldmary here is the promised essay about alear's gender

so. let's start with the obvious. the "dragons as a metaphor for gender" thing. it is very easy to slot Fell Dragon and Divine Dragon into agab and gender identity respectively. Alear was a Fell Dragon, now they're a Divine Dragon. Alear used to be their agab, now they're something else.

i don't have the spoons to find screenshots rn so uh. just take my word for it lol. but in Chapter 20, after Griss does the big reveal (which can be read as outing in this interpretation), Alear's friends assure them that they are who they choose to be, not what they're born as. Timerra literally says "if you wanna be a Divine Dragon, you're a Divine Dragon." actually fuck it we're going all in with the metaphor. so Chapter 20 in this interpretation is basically: Griss outs Alear and Alear gets (understandably) really distressed; they lose all confidence in themselves, they believe their friends are better off not associating with them, they feel like they've been lying to everyone, and they're worried that the people around them will see them differently because of this. Alear's friends assure them that it's okay, Alear is their friend, they're not lying about their identity, and they even affirm Alear's identity (see Timerra's quote above).

speaking of affirmation, let's look at a place where. there isn't much of it. yippee, Sombron's transphobic now. "No child of mine shall live as a Divine Dragon. Death was this one's inexorable fate" yeah fuck you too bitch. in Chapter 20, Sigurd mentions that Sombron "turned his back on [Alear]" and that Alear's "life was in danger." basically, Sombron disowned Alear for being trans and threatened them with physical violence, which unfortunately happens too frequently to trans people. Eveyle also disowns Alear in her boss dialogue in Chapter 21. i don't remember the words exactly but basically Eveyle calls Alear a coward for turning to Lumera (in this metaphor, finding a support network that affirms their identity) and says that they are not her sibling.

Sombron then kills Alear in what is obviously a transphobic hatecrime (this is a joke, the actual scene fits better as a metaphor for child abuse)

the Chapter 22 flashback (the one where tomato Alear commits PatricideTM) is. augh. as Alear is dying in Lumera's arms, they lament how they wish they could be more like her. Lumera is their role model. Lumera is everything they're not in their mind, even though they did something heroic. they are who they wished they were, but they can't see that beyond all the pain and trauma they've suffered. the fact that they're a Fell Dragon is at the forefront of their mind when they finally fall asleep. their last thoughts before the coma are literally their dysphoria like. ough agh ow.

i will admit i'm. not totally sure where Corrupted Alear fits into this metaphor. uh. BUT Emblem Alear is Alear fully embracing their gender identity. they've had doubts in their Divine-Dragonness before (aka they wonder if they're really their chosen gender identity), but here they embrace it. congrats to them on their transition. i've always wanted to make that joke. the really interesting part is that they don't totally reject their Fell-Dragonness, though. yes, their Emblem form is fully divine, but their normal form? still red and blue. there are multiple ways to interpret this and I love all of them equally.

oh yeah. Alear's immune to transphobia now. Griss rubs Alear's Fell Dragon lineage into their face, essentially saying that Alear will always be their agab in this metaphor. Alear's response? "Lol ok. why are you such a bitch." pop off king (gender neutral)

AND THAT BRINGS ME. TO CHAPTER 24. i have. an entire thing written about it. on my blog. lemme see if i can find it

does that mean Past Alear's interactions with Alear in chap 24 could be read as gender envy

and you have no idea it is actually possible to change this, because you grew up with the idea that this is what you are, you have to fulfill that role like this this and this, and if you don't you're defective and wrong. if you want to throw that label away in favor of something else, you're a failure and don't have the right to live. you grew up with this label and it doesn't fit right at all, like a shirt 5 sizes too small, but you have no idea it's possible to change that label into something right. that label defines you and sticks to you everywhere you go, it defines your relationships with others, it defines your relationship with the world around you, and you wish you were born differently, that you weren't so aware of this crawling feeling in your skin.

but you push all of that aside, because if your father realizes you feel this way, he'll kill you, like he killed all of your other siblings, and that terrifies you. you keep walking down this path that you hate, because it's the safest option you have. and being safe is better than being yourself when you don't even know what "yourself" is.

tldr Past Alear has really bad dysphoria but can't really do anything about it because they don't even know being trans is possible. and also that trying to experiment is incredibly dangerous in this environment

again i want to point out how Present Alear doesn't reject Past Alear. in fact, they seem to come to a greater understanding of themself afterwards.

when it comes to like. the trans lens of Present and Past Alear's relationship, i've always seen it as Present Alear coming to peace with their dysphoria. Past Alear vents all of their frustrations with their life, with themself (Past Alear comparing themself to the Corrupted and then immediately following that up with how much they hate the Corrupted. ough), and Present Alear listens. they provide assurance to Past Alear, and though that assurance falls on deaf ears, Present Alear never stops being kind.

ok I'm rambling again so yeah. Hello veteran worshippers I'm new :)

I mean, like I knew about Sleep Token, heard The Summoning first in one of my Trigun artist’s Tiktoks, then heard Take Me Back To Eden in a video by the creator of Covenant Webtoon. Listened to those songs for fun sometimes, but then TMBTE got ✨stuck✨ in my head. Then I was like “Live video of TMBTE??? Does it exist?”

And like. Why didn’t I get into this band sooner.

First off here’s The Summoning and TMBTE so you can see my pipeline:

And then THIS RITUAL introduced me to the band, which was FREAKING AMAZING IT’S SUCH A GOOD RECORDING!!

I love their aesthetic, secondly. You don’t see many mysterious bands these days, and these guys deliver so well. Every single member has a distinct and interesting look that's all so cool. I love how the Vesselettes/Espera exist, like that's amazing and I love seeing them. Vessel looks so fun to draw I wanna do it at some point. This is the first band I’ve found that just speaks to my OCs more than other fictional characters. Probably gonna see me animate Dark Signs with one of them soon enough.

Third, like… their lyrics are some of the most creative and evocative things I’ve heard in so long. It kinda sucks they don’t do many interviews bc I’m dying to know what goes through their heads when they write this amazing music. Some of my favorite lyrics are in a list below so you don’t read a gigantic paragraph, and will also show you my favorite songs I’ve found:

Chokehold: Still getting into this one, but "So show me that which I cannot see / Even if it hurts me / Even if I can’t sleep / Oh, and though we act out of our holy duty to be constantly awake / You’ve got me in a chokehold" is a build that always gets me so hyped up

Granite: just found this one, it's so BADASS!! "When you sit there acting like you know me... So keep an eye on the road, or we'll both be here forever" is so freaking awesome. I need like an animated music video that just illustrate the lyrics bc that'd be so cool

Like That: "Fall into your eyes like a grave (all that is inside, all your anger) / Bury me to the sound of your name, no (all your disgust, all your resentment) / Fall into your eyes like a grave (all your difference, all your pain) / Bury me to the sound of your name (all your pain)." There's so much resentment in this song and it's dripping off of these lyrics specifically, it's awesome

Missing Limbs: just found this one also but OMG it made me tear up the first time watching it in the Red Rocks Ritual! It's so sweet and tender, by the time you get to the title at the end you just get punched in the feels. "I'd give anything / To balance your conviction with certainty / To fall asleep without you lying next to me / To sever my connection with everything ... And I'll live like I've got missing limbs for you" IS SO GOOD HURTS MEEEEEEEE

The Summoning: -insert the rest of the song after 5:00- Obviously this is the part everyone uses in their social media posts, and I am not immune to its allure. It’s amazing!

Take Me Back To Eden: -insert the entire second chorus- and "And I don't know what's got its teeth in me / but I'm about to bite back in anger / And no amount of self-sought fury / will bring back the glory of innocence." The way Vessel sings this is so desperate and like enhances the lyrics so much more augh

Aqua Regia: honestly like all of it. The rap-ish style with the creative lyrics is so cool and the imagery of it all is so vivid. I love how the second chorus builds with the verse. It has such a steady, pungent rhythm that's so fun to sing

Rain: "I know, I know, I am what I am / The mouth of the wolf, the eyes of the lamb / So darling, will you saturate? / -second chorus-." I love the opposites in this verse, so interesting. The chorus has that yearning (tm) and I'm all here for ittttttt

The Night Does Not Belong To God: "When you live by daylight / With angels at your side." It's literally two lines but after the beautiful build that intros the song and his angelic voice, it does something to you

Dark Signs: I melt into a puddle every time I hear "I might break and bend to my basic need to be loved and close to somebody." The line is evocative enough just hearing it once, but making it a backing vocal that’s always playing just makes it punch you over and over. All the beat drops in this song are amazing

Atlantic: EVERY FREAKING WORD AND NOTE IN THIS SONG

I need y'all to like... hear Atlantic at Red Rocks specifically (cw: flashing):

This is the main reason I made this post bc... LIKE EVERYONE NEEDS TO HEAR THIS HELLO?!?!?!?!?!?!?!! This version is so amazing I barely listen to the studio version. "Sobbing as they turn to statues at the bedside / I'm trying not to crush into sand." I can't tell you what exactly but this makes me feel things. "Call me when they bury bodies underwater / It's blue light over murder for me / Crumble like a temple built from future daughters / To wastelands when the oceans recede" is a phenomenal verse and I've never felt more connected to the ocean when I hear it. The piano, the vocals, the instruments, the venue, II singing at the end, the vesselettes, the lights. Oh my god. The outro. Soothing and angelic omggggg. That beat drop?!?!?! ✨ w h a t ✨ . They've put an addictive substance into every one of their songs but this one is like an overdose. Can't get anything done all I'm thinking about is this -flails hands at video-. Vessel is literally a vessel in this song bc whatever entities the band made a deal with to have music this good are singing through him here.

what can’t they do?!?! Their music just goes into so many different genres sometimes and it’s amazing. Never heard a band this versatile.

-Tin Man [TNG]: The focus for this episode is Tam Elbrun, a Betazoid who is a gifted telepath even by their standards and an alien entity 'Tin Man'. Tam winds up catching 'Tin Man''s thoughts, and discovers that it calls itself Gomtuu, and that it is of an ancient species. He decides to join Gomtuu's journey to commit suicide in a star going supernova. Very bittersweet end for a character who didn't fit in, but he created a lasting impression.

Trouble with Tribbles [TOS S2 Ep15 Dec 29th 1967]

Okay I mean this one is CLASSIC. This is THE Star Trek episode for so many people. You read that title and you are picturing Kirk buried in fluffballs, with new ones falling upon his head the entire time. I love the Tribbles, they are SO CUTE AND GOOD and give me SO MUCH SEROTONIN.

I do also enjoy the overall premise though; a planet being fought over by the Federation and the Klingons, and the victor will be who can make it agriculturally viable. Fun twists and turns, and the Tribbles wind up VERY IMPORTANT bcus they don't like Klingons and. Not ever Klingon looks like a Klingon. c:

2. Immunity Syndrome [TOS S2 Ep18 Jan 19th 1968]

THIS ONE HITS SO HARD. It starts with a Federation ship entirely populated with Vulcans dying and Spock getting SLAMMED with that, and all he says about the Vulcans is that all they could feel was shock. And then we find it. A giant, all-consuming single celled organism, like a giant amoeba. But as it eats more and more, the time for it to split is coming which would doom Everything.

NOW DURING THAT someone has to go to that thing and science at it, and both Spock and Bones step up to the plate; Spock is chosen for his Vulcan biology, and he does later rub it in that Bones probably wouldn't have survived it. But It's SO AWFUL for Kirk who is choosing basically WHO WILL HAVE TO DIE of his two friends. They do haul Spock out of there but,,,yeah.

3. Genesis [TNG S7 Ep19 Mar 21st 1994]

SO THIS ONE IS FUN BECAUSE EVERYONE STARTS DE-EVOLVING. The local hypochondriac is in the medbay again and he gets a booster. And THAT is where everything goes wrong. People start displaying older, more primal behaviors, crew members begin to devolve, and by the time Picard and Data, who had left the ship, return, everything is SO SCREWED.

The cure is found by Data's cat, Spot; she has been turned into an iguana, but her babies are still kittens. Something something amniotic fluid. AND WHILE THEY'RE DOING THIS. Worf is a fucking BEAST now and he almost gets Picard!! :D

4. The Devil in the Dark [TOS S1 Ep26 Mar 8th 1967]

So first of all this episode is THE start of Bones going "I'm a doctor, not an [x]" so jot that down. BUT ANYWAY mining planet, tons of rare minerals, but the crew are being killed one by one by a mysterious monster. Eventually it gets at the generator which means EVERYONE CAN DIE if they don't fix it.

Now, during the mining they kept finding silicone nodules. Except they're eggs. The miners have been accidentally destroying thousands and thousands of eggs of the creature that is the last of its kind alive, which they discover is called a Horta after Spock mind melds with it. This one just hits hard and fast AND it ends relatively happily; the miners reach a truce with the Horta, and she hatches the eggs of her species and they tunnel up all kinds of minerals. And the miners are like symbiotic parasites <3

5. Masks [TNG S7 Ep17 Feb 21st 1994]

The Enterprise finds an alien archive that was frozen within a comet; but the moment they begin to burn through the comet, the Enterprise begins to Change. Most of all, Data does. He winds up essentially downloading the personality and soooorta 'spirit' of every single person in that alien race- including its deities, not all of which are kind.

It's Datacentric AND a really cool concept; I really enjoy the thought of a species locking its collective consciousness into a library as a last ditch effort of preservation. Hits different.

OKAY AND NOW THE OTHER I PROMISE I'LL TALK LESS in no particular order

DuckTales [2017]: The Duck Knight Returns [S2 Ep16] AND Let's Get Dangerous Parts 1&2 [S3 Ep12-13].

So these are the two HEAVILY Darkwing Duck focused episodes of the show. Now I didn't grow up with DW, idk if it just wasn't playing or if we didn't have the channel, but even I can feel the pure nostalgia in this episode. I love that it looks at the grimdark remakes of superheroes who have always been goofy or at least Hopeful and the way it works it into the story, PLUS the jealousy of an old actor vs the new actor stepping into the role. My ONLY complaint with this one is that it PERFECTLY sets up Darkwing's nemesis Negaduck to show up, literally the older actor is in the sewers and the dye leaks out of his costume showing it to be Negaduck colors AND IT'S PERFECT HE EVEN SAYS HE'S HAPPY TO PLAY THE PART and then they DON'T EVER ADDRESS IT.

Let's Get Dangerous focuses in on Saint Canard and Gosalyn [and her missing, presumed dead grandfather]. I saw this one after I started watching DW, and honestly it's a really great interpretation of her story. The science and danger are really high up there and I enjoy it, and it's the last really good taste we get of the DW trio because they are never gonna make a DW Duck remake OTL

2. Doctor Who [New Who]: The Impossible Planet and the Satan Pit [Series 2 Ep 8-9]

Look any Doctor Who is gonna be hard bcus Donna is prob my favorite new who companion and Tennant is my favorite of the modern Doctors, but something about this episode just really HITS for me. I love getting to this dying planet in the orbit of a black hole and you think alright well that's the problem BUT NO ACTUALLY IT'S THE FUCKIN UHHHHH DEVIL. OKAY. THANKS.

There's possession and there's ancient evils being awoken, there's a high stakes escape from the planet and Rose gets to be a BADASS and also she gets to talk about the important of UNIONIZING. I can't explain well why I really enjoy this one, I think it just. Scratches an itch.

3. Sherlock Holmes [1984 Granada Series]: The Blue Carbuncle

I LOVE JUST ABOUT EVERY SINGLE EPISODE OF THIS SERIES BUT,,,but,,,the vibes on this one are just it, okay? It's a Christmas episode sure but it's the 1800s and it's not super slammed in your face, but also just. It's warm. A husband on the outs with his wife loses his hat and goose but they're returned by Holmes, and he is down on his luck and oh he makes me so sad...the really heart-wrenching plot with the man framed for the theft whose wife wants to believe him but is terrified AND THEIR KIDS,,,

AND AT THE END Sherlock wants to sit down for their meal but Watson just Can't, not while an innocent man is in jail, and he and Sherlock go and free him and his wife and kids hug tackle him aaaaa,,,

4. Monk: Mr. Monk and the Red-Headed Stranger [S1 Ep12]

Look I'll be real this one is mostly on here because I love Willie Nelson and he's in it I can't okay??? But I just really love who Monk is and how he is, and he gets the chance to play with Willie on the radio BUT SOMEONE ELSE RUINS IT,,,,BUT THEN THEY PLAY TRUDY'S FAVORITE SONG AT HER GRAVE AT THE END AAAAAAAAAAAAAA and also a very sympathetic murderer always throws a wrench in things.

5. Binan Kōkō Chikyū Bōei-bu LOVE!: Ep8: Love Wanders AND Binan Kōkō Chikyū Bōei-bu LOVE! LOVE!: Ep12: Love Will Save The Earth!

I COULDN'T FINISH THIS LIST WITHOUT ONE ANIME OR BOUEIBU BEING ON THIS LIST.

Been watching a LOT of Caitlin Doughty/Ask a Mortician lately cuz I've been thinking about death a lot. Not in a "Oh no I'm gonna DIE!" Or in a "Augh I'm depressed I wanna die" way, but in a "Man, this is really gonna happen at some point and we should really plan and prepare for it" way

Then I visit my mom and bro for dinner tonight, and Mom tells us that Aaron Carter just died. After dinner we watched some Lower Decks and the episode involved a character dying off-screen and a main character questioning the point/meaning of life when a death can be so random and meaningless.

So uh. I broached the subject with my family. What do we each want done when we die? Where will we be buried and how? Embalming? Viewings? Cremation?

And my brother was snarky and jokey about it, because that's how he do, but he did express that he wants what's easiest on the family, and we came to a tentative decision based on that.

Mom already had a plan, and a spot reserved with her parents, and a spare spot reserved for bro in case something unexpected happens before other plans can be made.

Jon and I want green burials and found a place not too far away that does them. We have to look into it more, but now at least the people around us have an idea what we want.

So yeah. It just feels good to have that out of the way. It's been on my mind a lot, and now we've discussed it. It was hard, but necessary I think.

Mom and I also agreed that we're gonna order will kits for her and Dad and get him to sit down with us and figure things out. He's said he wants me to be the executor of his will but I don't think he actually HAS one yet.

I know it may seem morbid but having a plan and knowing what my family members want makes the prospect of death way less scary. Yeah, it's still unknown what will happen to our souls/consciousness/whatever but at least we have an idea what will happen to our bodies and don't have to stress our loved ones by making them figure out what to do. It's decided in advance, so they don't have to worry about it.

Sorry to get all deep and serious over here but! It's important! I encourage y'all to talk with your loved ones about such when you have a chance

one thing thats been on my mind is what the FUCK they're planning on doing with Belos. Because they could have easily pivoted to a New Big Bad and just KILLED him or at least left him an irrelevant pile of muck in the demon realm. but he's still here AND in the human realm, so where is his character arch going??? What's he gonna be planning??? I NEED TO KNOW

other than that, im excited for all the cute bonding moments bewteen the kids. I'm DYING to know what happened to everyone directly after the day of unity, especially the coven heads and Eda.

i'm excited to see what's happened to the demon realm. Last time we saw it, it was getting all kinds of reconstructed. My immediate thought was that it was gonna be turned into some kind of fucked up playground for the collector.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT an actual Wittebros flashback. I thought we weren't going to get it (we've got a lot of other stuff to cover and the gist of it was basically all laid out in the hollow mind paintings), but now I'm not sure! Since we saw more of Calebs Actual Real Face it's making me hope we'll get to see more!

While I'm not going to morn the Yoojin's backstabbers and their now imminent deaths, I do feel for them a little. From an outside POV Yoojin was sketchy, and it seemed like he wanted to control Yoohyun rather than rescue him. They thought they saved Yoohyun! They are quickly and painfully going find out they did NOT.

That said, I /do/ know Yoojin and his motivations. So. Not really sad.

Fuck! He's such a good character!!!!!!!! If it weren't for the fact that I'm severely biased for Looks to the Moon and he hurt them I would be calling him the "they did nothing wrong (said fully knowing they did all that shit)" fandom term I forget what it is.

Like despite everything he did he still cares about his sibling and wsdklsfdlkasflkj LET THEM TALK! GAME! So yeah now I'm gonna circle back around to Looks to the Moon and resurrect her. I am soooo desperately hoping this is gonna trigger some kind of new dialogue because fuck! Even without direct communication if it turns out she does now know that Five Pebbles helped!?!?!? I will tear myself open about that.

Currently I am traveling with NSH's neuron and also a pearl I accidentally stole from Five Pebbles' room. (I dropped what else I was holding and grabbed it trying to get the other thing back. He said "Yes, help yourself. They are not edible." which I am interpreting as being said in the most hilariously dry voice possible). I had no idea you could actually take his pearls and am now both in general curious what it says and also wondering if having something of his will trigger a reaction from Looks to the Moon about seeing him that just showing up might not.

After that though I'm planning on going to a backup save from just before this and stealing one of Five Pebbles' neurons to see if a) that would also revive Looks to the Moon (current hypothesis is no especially after Pebbles saying the other neuron was specifically formatted to help her) and b) if it gives different regular neuron-giving dialogue than in Survivor and Monk.

Also I saw the Hunter Five Pebbles dialogue twice because the first time I accidentally stayed in too long and he killed me about it. The second time through I tried to see if he would react to NSH's pearl and had that out and the neuron in my stomach (when I had it the other way around before), but he just made me spit out the neuron and didn't react differently. So now I gotta also check and see what he has to say if I show up without the neuron at all.
