It's WIP Wednesday!

If multiverse theory is real, maybe there is a universe in which, once I got the barest silver of an idea about a series of fics based on Carly Rae Jepsen songs, that I nonetheless decided not to go through with it.
This is not that universe.
The following is an excerpt from "Bad Thing Twice," the first in that series. Finished work to include the meticulous undoing of buttons, decisions made under the influence of interminable budget meetings, and James Bond's slowly dawning realization that he is what might be termed a cardigan-sexual. Excerpt below the cut
It would never have happened, if it weren’t for the cardigan.
Q had become increasingly partial to them, since he’d been made Quartermaster. He had so little armor, otherwise, against the bureaucratic monster that ground so many of its best and brightest to bits. He was the youngest department head in history, and he had no illusions about the skepticism that had surrounded his appointment. He’d come from nowhere, an enfant terrible who’d quickly outstripped anything his university tutors could teach him, and been snatched up by the government in large part simply to keep the private sector from getting their hands on him. He’d risen through the ranks at MI6 on his merit alone, a shocking proposition in a system where it sometimes seemed that the primary qualification for any position was simply being the mediocre nephew of someone of middling importance. Q, in contrast, had neither wealth nor connections. There were no Ministers waiting to grant a favor for the promise of one in return, no Members of Parliament who’d taken an interest in his career, benevolent or otherwise.
There was only Q, and his astonishing brain, and his steady heart—and his impeccable cardigans, buttoned up against the world.

This is the best Carly Rae Jepsen song of the year, which is a bit disappointing in a year where Carly released an album. Sadly The Loneliest Time is mostly not to my taste. It's classy and restrained, and I don't want Carly to be restrained: I want to cut to the feeling! (Actually, it's not all classy - the title track is camp, and not in a good way; it reminds me of a Monty Python parody of 70s lounge mawkishness.)
Still, The Loneliest Time does contain "Bad Thing Twice", which is perfect.

Battle imagery in The Loneliest Time ⚔️
Alright alright alright we've had TLT for a lil over a week now, let's analyze my favorite motif so far!
It pops up in Surrender My Heart ("I used to soldier through my hardest days") and Bad Thing Twice ("You were a king and I was your soldier, babe/I fought for your attention/for your lonely eyes"). Cutting to the feeling truly is Carly's calling, huh? 🗡️🗡️🗡️
Memes aside, it's cool to hear someone with such a lush and graceful sound position herself as a bloody, determined fighter. Caring deeply—about someone, about yourself, about anything at all—IS tough. I love how Carly legitimizes that struggle. I love that she's exploring themes beyond romance in this record (the tracks that deal with loss in particular—Bends, Western Wind ... phewwww) but she's also still here reminding us that romance isn't frivolous. It's work and it's (hopefully) worth fighting for.

It would never have happened the first time, if it weren't for the cardigan.
Because I have no self-control, I wrote the first fic in what is intended to be a collection of works based on Carly Rae Jepsen songs. Each work will be complete and stand on its own.
This one is called "Bad Thing Twice," and, just under the wire on 00Q Day in my timezone, it's up on ao3. Like Bond and Q, the author assumed it would be just sex, and then was shocked, shocked to discover that there were feelings in this establishment. This fic is a bit of a departure for me, but I very much hope you enjoy it!
It also goes out to @bishybarnaby, the monarch of lyrical photosets. Thank you, bishy. I have almost forgiven you for your paddington/casino royale crossover.
