BeeFTA Awards 2018

Cue. Drumroll…. It’s here. BeeFTA 2018! After last years awards, I had big hopes for this years BeeFTA’s. The black and yellow carpet was ready to be rolled out. Unfortunately, however, due to budgetary constraints, I’ve had to rain in my plans. 

Honestly, it was gonna be great! Queen Bee was gonna be on stage… There was gonna be an enormous caterpillar cake!… bitesize hummingbird muffins, edible bouquets of flowers, bumble buns (not sure these are actually a food), nectar cocktails, beetle juice, butterfly biscuits, wasabi wasps (okay, yep I’m definitely making these up now). There was even gonna be a strict pollinator dress code for attendees. Sounded good right?! Sadly, the fallout from last years awards has hit the office hard. The bees are still complaining about the number of BeeFTA trophies. Uh hu… still. You just can’t get the staff these days. 

Anyway, in line with the blogs change of direction for this year, BeeFTA 2018 is not just gonna be about bees. BeeFTA 2018 is going to celebrate the world of pollinators! In the next couple of days, I will be announcing this year’s nominations. There are also going to be a few changes to last years categories… so watch this space! 🦋🐝🐜🐝🐞

BeeFTA 2018 - The Shutterbug Award

NOMINEE 1 - Ming Thein (Insect macro photography techniques – an ongoing experimentation)

NOMINEE 2 - Vicky-Michelle Squire - cameraless photography to create vivid and detailed colour prints of real butterflies, beetles and bees

NOMINEE 3 - Scientists are buzzing after developing tiny cameras that are so small they can be placed on bees.

NOMINEE 4 - Entomology Project showing the Iridescent microworld of insects - Francesco Bagnato

NOMINEE 1 - Scientists discover how the distinctive pitch of mosquito wingbeats could tell us how to fight malaria.

NOMINEE 2 - The Plight of the Bumblebee (and others) by Caroline Ritchey

NOMINEE 3 - Dynamics by Secret Drum Band (an album composed in response to soundscape and form in locations chosen to draw attention to issues concerning endangered species, ecosystem function, and habitat loss)

The Winners of the 2017 BeeFTA Awards!

That’s it. The first Annual BeeFTA Awards have now concluded. The votes have been cast, and the winners are about to be announced... It was a tightly contested affair (mainly due to the sheer volume of votes). In many categories we have multiple winners. Most noticeably in the Most Annoying Bee Movie Meme category in which each nominee won. Argh, I was reluctant to hand out a single BeeFTA in that category, let alone all four! The sheer volume of winners has caused quite a stir in the office. The bees are complaining about the number of BeeFTA trophies that need to be produced. I know, I know... I’ll be having words. In any case, there will be some sort of award produced and distributed to the winners very soon. So let’s get down to it! The winners...
