Day 5 - Laekenois

The first and only Laekenois I've ever seen irl is this handsome boy, Ruby River's Tristan. So thankful for the owners for letting me take lots of pictures of him! ❤️ They were all awesome, both people and dog.

Surprisingly this also took 2,5 hours like all of the busts so far. I would've thought it was longer with the curly coat and all. Unfortunately, for this I forgot to turn on the recording until the sketch was done so there will only be half a recording 🥴

🐾The Outsiders as Dogs🐾

This list is inspired by this adorable list that @dallasgallant made! It was so cute that I had to make my own. I grew up in horse town until I was twelve (lots and lots of farmland, seasonal rodeos, etc) so the breeds that I've chosen are dogs that I saw pretty often or were aware of.

Ponyboy: The Belgian Laekenois

So for the Curtis brothers, I wanted to keep them all in the same family, and what better farm dog breed to pick from than the Belgian Shepherd! These dogs are very intelligent and eager to please, on top of being very affectionate. And while they're an overall family dog, they can also get attached to one person in particular, and that just really reminds me of Pony and Soda's relationship.

Sodapop: The Belgian Tervuven

Now the Belgian Tervuven, while primarily being great farm hands, are commonly used as therapy and service dogs. They're also really easygoing and recognizable by their beautiful, fluffy coats. I can just imagine Tervuven!Soda cuddling up with Laekenois!Pony after he has bad nightmare.

Darry: The Belgian Malinois

Rounding up the Curtis brother is Darry as the Belgian Malinois. Out of the different breeds in the Belgian Shepherd family, these dogs are known for their unwavering work ethic and solid intelligence. This just screams Darry to me and it doesn't help that Malinois can gel really well with energetic breeds and well, the perfect breed to be the unofficial leader of a gang of energetic pooches.

Johnny: The Border Collie

Now I know that Johnny isn't the most hyperactive character, but he is one of the most independent, and Border Collies are known work very well by themselves. Combined with their quick reaction time and high levels of intelligence, I can think of no better dog to represent Johnny.

Dally: The Kangal Shepherd

Kangal Shepherds are traditional guardian dogs and have been known to fend off wolves and other predators (i.e. cheetahs—yes cheetahs—in certain parts of Africa). Unfortunately, this breed is also very prominent in dog fighting rings, where their aggression for natural predators is turned on its head for other dog breeds. I'm very much reminded of Dally's violence and his protectiveness of Johnny in this breed.

Steve: The Catahoula Leopard Dog

These dogs, while very agile and intelligent, are very energetic and require a little more attention than most farm dogs. It's not very hard to visualize Catahoula!Steve nagging Tervuven!Soda to play with him lol.

Two Bit: The Black Mouth Cur

The two most defining traits of the Black Mouth Cur are their sensitivity and loyalty to their flock and their owners. They're fearless in the face of predators but also goofy and lovable, just like Two Bit!

Cherry: The Cocker Spaniel

I can only see the Socs as show dog breeds so ofc I had to give Cherry the Cocker Spaniel. Their redish-brownish fur is pretty iconic, just like Cherry's red hair.

Marcia: The Cavalier King Charles

Just like Cherry, another show dog. The Cavalier King Charles is very affectionate and open to interacting to strangers, so please imagine King Charles!Marcia and Black Mouth Cur!Two Bit hitting it off and playing with each other.

All the fanart of Lucy and Cooper with a german shepherd shouldn’t bug me as much as it does but I didn’t get my autism diagnosis for nothing and my special interest in dogs always comes first and Four is A MALINOIS. A BELGIAN MALINOIS.

Specifically, because in most national kennel clubs with the exception of the American, the coats of malinois are considered just coat types and not different breeds, a short-hair malinois. The other types are curly coated, (laekenois), long coated (Tervuren) and black long coated (Groendael)

Justice League dog version

It's just me again, rambling about what breed the league members would be if they were dogs.

(I hope to later add other DC characters and other members of the league. For example: Dinah and Ollie, or even Wally)

Bruce Wayne: Doberman

Bruce would definitely be a doberman. This breed of dog is characterized by being very territorial and at first glance they tend to be quite scary or give a warning of danger to others, but it is known that they are very hard-working and brave dogs, and they are also usually quite docile with their masters and do not hesitate. to defend them if the situation requires it.

Clark Kent: Labrador retriever

For Clark, I first thought about using the breed that inspired (according to what I know) to make Kripto, however, it seemed more appropriate to use a labrador retriever since I think it fits more with Clark's personality. It is a very playful, loyal and sociable dog, which has no difficulty living with children, strangers and other animals. Sounds like Clark to me.

Diana: Spaniel enano

It was much more difficult for me to choose a breed for Diana, since I wanted a strong, but loyal and intelligent dog; So that led me to think of two options. One was a Belgian Laekenois and the other is a Miniature Spaniel. The first race is known to be very protective of their people and property, and are quite good with children, while the second (the one I chose) is a very intelligent, elegant, friendly race and are known to be a perfect to alert when they perceive any strange noise

Barry Allen: Golden retriever

Barry was definitely the easiest to choose. He is a golden retriever. Since they are considered one of the most intelligent breeds, they are very kind and calm, in addition to being really good at taking care of children. But what stands out most about them are their incredible tracking skills and that reminds me a little of being a police officer. In addition, these dogs are very popular, since they tend to be very effective therapy dogs.

Extra point because he's blonde.

Hal Jordan: Husky Siberiano

Hal was the most difficult of all because it is not easy to find a dog that shares several characteristics with him. I chose a Husky, because in my experience they are animals that, although they can live with other dogs, are usually very jealous, since they like to have attention on them. Despite this, they are very pleasant dogs to live with and tend to socialize easily although sometimes they can be somewhat dramatic and quite disobedient, but that is part of their charm. Not to mention how noisy they are.

Arthur Curry: Portuguese water dog

I think Arthur could be a Portuguese water dog, since these are very independent, friendly dogs that can get along well with other dogs and even cats, in addition to that, they are quite intelligent dogs, but above all agile and active. They are incredible swimmers and it was believed that these dogs help sailors fish.

J'onn J'onzz: Bloodhound

I think that these dogs, along with the Saint Bernards, are one of my favorite breeds, since they tend to be extremely calm and peaceful dogs, they are not dogs that make a lot of noise and they usually adapt well to any other living being they live with. They are loyal and affectionate dogs, but they are not territorial, despite that, they have their little heart and BloodHounds do not tolerate loneliness well. For me this breed is the one that best fits J'onn, although I also thought of a Saint Bernard.

Wips for some upcoming edits! The last ones I would really like some feedback on, but general feedback also would be nice!

Firstly though, as you can see, a compelling suggestion was made to me about Roxie. So moving forward, she will be a raccoon! (You can probably still expect to see some other ideas I had as fully realized edits eventually, though.) Also, people will sometimes get additional markings to their skin! So Scott's design has been altered, as you can see with Nega Scott!

And Ramona might be locked in as a jaguar, with Lisa being a leopard! Idk, it works for me; I do have more mockups for Ramona (SPTO ones) following this lead, but I'm still open to suggestions! The facial spots might not be in the final, also; we'll see.

Now, the two I need feedback on: Neil and Joseph.

Neil, I'm just struggling to select an animal really. I think I like gecko the least, possibly owl the most! I like the claws he gets with sloth though.

And Joseph, I would like some feedback on dog breeds. I do have one suggestion marked down here for a terrier mockup, but the two above are for Belgian laekenois and wetterhouns. I made my selections based on what some websites were telling me about their personalities, but I have never interacted w those dog breeds before to my knowledge, so. 🤷‍♀️

(And before I forget! Hollie is a hyena! Spotted, specifically.)

Sbcjgjsjfhnsb a little while ago my friend and I tried to kin assign me a dog breed and we landed on the Belgian laekenois which tbh pretty accurate...., tho I feel like I'd have a lot more darker patches or be a lot darker overall with some light patches. curly fur, pointy ears, fluffy tail for sure.

Ok but the other thing is I'm also like deerboy-faething so anyway I drew these around november, drew a lot of deer last semester actually

I would just be a literal half deer half puppy that flies (not sure how that works), but also tbh being a human w those features (ears tail antlers wings??)??! like I see these animal boys in dungeon meshi and I'm jealous lol. This is why I do piccrews so obsessively sometimes sjgjsjs (debating posting some but I feel like those should go on main?)

1. how different in temperament are your dutchie vs your belgians?

2. (i know the akc considers the different belgian types separate breeds but the rest of the world doesn't) (assuming youre in the US) do you know how different, if any, the different belgian types are in temperament?

i actually just wrote an article abt dutchies vs. groens in my experience and its waiting to get published so i am going to copy & paste some of this from there

but 1) dutchies vs. groens:

The temperament difference is ultimately going to fall onto the difference in lines. There will be some similarities—both breeds are medium-sized herding dogs and often referred to as “pointy, bitey dogs”—dogs that were (at least at one point) bred for military and police work. While the Dutch Shepherd dominates this field more than the Belgian Sheepdog in modern times, historically, Belgian Sheepdogs were bred for the same qualities. The biggest similarity is that these dogs have strong work ethics, a lot of energy, and really like to use their teeth. 

Temperament-wise, Belgian Sheepdogs tend to be “softer” dogs and tend not to have quite as much drive as Dutch Shepherds on average. This can vary on an individual level, but the majority of Belgian Sheepdogs in America are not police dogs (although their tan, short haired variety, the Malinois, is) and are sport dogs or companions instead. The Dutch Shepherd is very commonly seen in police forces and in a working environment, although they do excel in sports and as companions as well. 

These breeds share a lot of similarities. The Dutch Shepherd and Belgian Sheepdog are medium-sized breeds that are, at their core, working breeds. Both breeds embody the word ‘versatile’. Both breeds are incredibly intelligent, have a lot of energy, and love to work with their person. They are alert and watchful. They are fun to train, hold lots of natural enthusiasm, are confident, and are extremely athletic. Both need proper socialization early to make sure they turn out as stable adults. 

2) belgian differences:

this one i don't have pre-written but it is largely the same...the individual differences are going to fall on the lines the dog comes from. in general, laekenois tend to be the "softest" out of the four, with groens also being softer than a terv or mal. malinois are the most extreme, but they also have the most variety and are the most popular, so it makes sense. they usually have the highest energy, drive, and variation in temperament, size, and looks. however! a lot of individual lines of things like groens or tervs can match a malinois in drive and energy. nettle regularly competes with & out-intensifies malinois. finch does not. malinois and tervs are usually more competitive as well.
