The Greenhouse Haven Kit came just at the right time. There's a lot EA did/does wrong with the Sims 4, but this kit appeased me a lot 🍵
I'm in awe with the swatches of the seed pots. As if the plants were really growing. Even different kinds 🌱

Tra i numerosi eventi letterari di questo mese dedicati alla presentazione o discussioni di opere italiche spicca l’appuntamento atteso per il 20 febbraio a Belgrave Square, sede dell’Istituto Italiano di Cultura a Londra. Entry 1 - ABOUT ME:
Hello, my name is Matthew Phillips.
Here is a bit about me:
Sport has always had a significant impact on my life, as a child I recall watching Dad play local footy. As I grew up I began learning different sports, playing games with the older kids in my court as we kicked, hit and caught different balls, competing in different competitions. This embedded my love for sport. Those around me have played and competed in different sports. It was to no surprise that my two younger brothers would fall in love with the competitive, social and fun nature that I too love about competition. The three of us lit each other's fires, motivating one another to be the best we can be. Today sport for me, is what allows me to socialise with my friendship groups and the major conversation topic around my family's dinner table.
I have had the honour and the privilege to take on the football field next to one of my younger brothers Luke, together we represented the senior football team for Lilydale Football Club. Both of my brothers, my dad and myself all currently play football for Lilydale in our selective teams. My sporting dream is that I get the opportunity to take the field with all 3 of them one day.
It is no surprise that I want to work in the sporting industry, as I want to work in an industry I am passionate, knowledgeable and motivated about. Currently I am finishing a bachelor of Sports Business at Holmesglen Institute, I am expected to complete my studies by the end of the year. My final semester of University will see me take on an Internship. I am really looking forward to this opportunity, I already work in industry however I am intrigued to see how other workplaces operate.
Business is a new passion of mine, after studying it in High School I became hooked. Since then I have read countless business books, watched documentaries, listened to podcasts/interviews and researched, to further my education on business.
To begin my work in the sporting industry I set out as a local football umpire for the Eastern Football and Netball League. As a first job I loved football umpiring, I did both field umpiring and boundary umpiring for both seniors and juniors. Umpiring helped me significantly grow in confidence as you are constantly thinking on your feet, interacting effectively with the players to ensure you don't stop the game. I learnt time management, organisation, decision making, conflict resolution experiences, as well as remaining calm in stressful situations and the ability to work in a small team.
The beginning of 2020 sore the beginning of my career for Belgravia Leisure. To begin with I started as a Lifeguard at Kilsyth Centenary Pool where I learnt the skills on how to concentrate for long periods of time without lapsing off and allowed me to improve my observational skills. Within 3 months of working at Kilsyth I began Lifeguarding at Belgrave Outdoor Pool and Lilydale Outdoor Pool. After Lifeguarding for 6 months I was offered to be a Customer Service Officer at Kilsyth Pool, this new position served me front of house, serving and interacting with customers. Whilst being a Customer Service Officer I learnt the art of persuasive communication where I had to meet KPIs of selling different types of memberships to new and existing customers, as well as being empathetic yet communicating key messages when customers complained about specific details.
After a year I was offered to be a Duty Manager at Belgrave pool, where I impressed the Centre Manager with my excellent communication, conflict resolution, time management and my versatility. The Centre Manager then referred me to be a Duty Manager at Kilsyth Pool where I continuously honed on my skills to continue to further myself. In September 2021 the opportunity to apply to manage my own facility for the summer became available, I applied to Centre Manage both Belgrave and Lilydale Pools. I was successful in my application for Lilydale, so over Summer 2021-2022 I ran my own facility for 5 months which was a fantastic opportunity to expose me to new scenarios and allowed me to employ my own staff and further my management skills. I loved this opportunity, following the summer I applied to be the Acting Operations Coordinator at Kilsyth Pool where I am responsible for staffing, pool operations, ensuring the facility is WHS fit and developing safe operating procedures for everything we do.
My career ambitions are to get a job in a sporting organisation working with people. I would love to work in a community engagement role, where I can interact with not only the organisation but also the public providing them with transparency into the organisation and making them feel valued. Preferably I would like to work in a charitable organisation where your overall objective is to raise money for a greater course.

Dark Academia Moodboards 1/x
THE ORDER (Netflix series)
Receiving a scholarship to Belgrave is no small feat. I hope you don’t plan to major in self-sabotage.
A poor student hell-bent on revenge getting into an elite institution. Secret societies with deadly initiation rituals. Chess used for flirting. An ethics professor with potentially ambiguous morals. Someone put all dark academia tropes through a blender, added werewolves, and created this show, which is spooky, funny, and luckily does not take itself too seriously.

A List of Show Recs, While You’re Stuck at Home
This is a huge and continuously updating list.  The first 2 categories are ‘definitely DA’ and ‘Probably DA’, but beyond that all of the shows are sorted by category.  Enjoy!
Definitely DA:
The Living and the Dead - The plot revolves around Nathan Appleby and his wife, Charlotte Appleby whose farm is believed to be at the centre of numerous supernatural occurrences. Set in Victorian times and has ghosts and an excellent aesthetic.  Available on Amazon Prime. 5/5
A Series of Unfortunate Events - This series follows the tragic tale of three orphans -- Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire -- who are investigating their parents' mysterious death. The siblings are saddled with an evil guardian named Count Olaf , who will do whatever it takes to get his hands on the Baudelaires' inheritance. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny must outsmart Olaf at every turn, foiling devious plans and disguises. The series is based on the series of books by Lemony Snicket.  Available on Netflix.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - A dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror and the occult. In the reimagined origin story, Sabrina Spellman wrestles to reconcile her dual nature -- half-witch, half-mortal -- while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family -- including aunts Hilda and Zelda -- and the daylight world humans inhabit.  Available on Netflix. 5/5
Downton Abbey - This historical drama follows the lives of the Crawley family and their servants in the family's Edwardian country house. The programme begins with the 1912 sinking of the Titanic, which leaves Downton Abbey's future in jeopardy, as Lord Grantham's presumptive heir -- his cousin James -- and his son, Patrick, die aboard the ship, leaving him without a male offspring to take over the throne upon his death. As a result, Lord Grantham must search for a new heir. As the programme progresses through the decade, other historical events happen leading up to Lord Grantham declaring in 1914 that Britain is at war with Germany, marking the beginning of World War I, which becomes a major plot on the programme.  Available on Amazon Prime.
Gran Hotel - Set in Spain in the early 20th century, Julio arrives at a luxury hotel to meet his sister, head chambermaid Cristina only to discover she has disappeared. Julio makes it his mission to find her and infiltrates the hotel under the guise of a footman.  This show is in Spanish but available with English Subtitles. 5/5
Penny Dreadful - An exploration of the origin stories of classical literature characters in this psychological thriller that takes place in the dark corners of Victorian London. Sir Malcolm is an explorer who has lost his daughter to the city's creatures, and he will do whatever is needed to get her back and to right past wrongs. His accomplice, seductive clairvoyant Vanessa Ives, recruits charming American Ethan Chandler to help locate Sir Malcolm's daughter and slay some monsters. Available on Netflix and Hulu.
The Umbrella Academy - On one day in 1989, 43 infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by billionaire industrialist Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who creates the Umbrella Academy and prepares his "children" to save the world. In their teenage years, though, the family fractures and the team disbands. Fast forward to the present time, when the six surviving members of the clan reunite upon the news of Hargreeves' passing. They work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father's death, but divergent personalities and abilities again pull the estranged family apart, and a global apocalypse is another imminent threat.
Sherlock - Dr. John Watson is a war vet just home from Afghanistan. He meets the brilliant but eccentric Holmes when the latter, who serves as a consultant to Scotland Yard, advertises for a flatmate. Almost as soon as Watson moves into the Baker Street flat, they are embroiled in mysteries, and Sherlock's nemesis, Moriarty, appears to have a hand in the crimes.  Available on Netflix. 5/5
Stranger Things - In 1980s Indiana, a group of young friends witness supernatural forces and secret government exploits. As they search for answers, the children unravel a series of extraordinary mysteries. Available on Netflix. 5/5
Twilight Zone - It's a strange mix of horror, science-fiction, drama, comedy and superstition. Serling introduced each episode, and many of the black and white episodes concluded with a surprise ending. Available on Netflix and Hulu. 5/5.
Outlander - After serving as a British Army nurse in World War II, Claire Randall is enjoying a second honeymoon in Scotland with husband Frank, an MI6 officer looking forward to a new career as an Oxford historian. Suddenly, Claire is transported to 1743 and into a mysterious world where her freedom and life are threatened. To survive, she marries Jamie Fraser, a strapping Scots warrior with a complicated past and a disarming sense of humour. A passionate relationship ensues, and Claire is caught between two vastly different men in two inharmonious lives. Available on Netflix and Hulu.
Probably DA:
The Magicians - Quentin Coldwater, a grad student at Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, has been fascinated by the magical fantasy world since he was young. But as he has gotten older, Quentin and his 20-something friends have discovered that the magical world they read about as children is not only real, but it poses dangers to humanity. While studying at the secret upstate New York school, the friends struggle to cope with the aftermath of a catastrophe that befalls the institution. Available on Netflix, Hulu, and the Syfy website. 5/5
Merlin - This action-packed fantasy-drama revisits the saga of King Arthur and his wizard, Merlin, by focusing on the two characters when they were ambitious young men struggling to understand their destinies. In this telling, Prince Arthur is known to be the heir to the throne (no sword from the stone here). And he is acquainted with all those who will one day form the legend of Camelot, including Lancelot, Guinevere, and Morgana. Merlin is also forced to deal with King Uther's Great Purge, which bans all use of magic. Available on Netflix. 5/5
The Order - When Belgrave University student Jack Morton joins a fabled secret society, the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose, he is thrust into a world of magic, monsters and intrigue. Out to avenge his mother's death, he uncovers dark family secrets and lands in an underground battle being waged between werewolves and practitioners of dark magic. Assisting Jack in the fight is Alyssa, a tour guide at Belgrave and fellow member of the Order, which is led by Jack's estranged father.  Available on Netflix. 4/5.
Legion - David Haller is a troubled young man who was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a child. Shuffled from one psychiatric institution to the next, in his early 30s, David met and fell in love with a beautiful and troubled fellow patient named Syd. After a startling encounter with her, he was forced to confront the shocking possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees may actually be real. Syd led David to Melanie Bird, a demanding but nurturing therapist who heads a team of specialists -- Ptonomy, Kerry, and Cary -- each of whom possesses a unique and extraordinary gift. Together, they helped David to recognize and harness his hidden abilities and unlock a deeply suppressed truth -- he had been haunted his entire life by a malicious parasite of unimaginable power.  Available on Hulu. 4/5.
Comedy:
Derry Girls - Following Erin and her friends as they grow up in a world of armed police in armoured Land Rovers and British Army check points in 1990s Northern Ireland and attempt to navigate the highs and lows of being teenagers. Available on Netflix. 5/5
Detective/military:
Broadchurch - When the corpse of an 11-year-old British boy, Danny Latimer, is found bloodied and dirty on an idyllic beach, a small Dorset community becomes the focus of a police investigation and media madness. Out-of-town Detective Inspector Alec Hardy gets the point position over Detective Sgt. Ellie Miller -- who feels the job should have been hers. Slowly, more members of the community of Broadchurch are drawn into the investigation. While dealing with so much unwelcome attention, Danny's family tries to cope with its grief. When a suspect is named and charged, the ensuing trial sees the defendant promising to expose more of the townspeople's secrets.  Available on Netflix. 5/5.
Haven - FBI Agent Audrey Parker arrives in Haven, Maine, on what she believes is a routine assignment. But the longer she stays, the more curious she becomes -- about the townspeople, who seem to be beset by a range of supernatural afflictions; about the town itself, which contains many secrets; and about her own surprising connection to this strange place.  Available on Netflix and Tubi.  4/5.
A Very Secret Service - At the height of the Cold War in 1960, André Merlaux joins the French Secret Service and contends with enemies both foreign and bureaucratic.  In French with English Subtitles.  Available on Netflix. 5/5.
Criminal Minds - An elite squad of FBI profilers analyzes the country's most-twisted criminal minds, anticipating the perpetrators' next moves before they can strike again. Each member of the "mind hunter" team brings his or her expertise to pinpoint predators' motivations and identify emotional triggers to stop them. The core group includes an official profiler who is highly skilled at getting into the minds of criminals, a quirky genius, the former media liaison who manages to adeptly balance family life and the job, and a computer wizard.  Available on Netflix and CBS.  5/5
Eureka - In the years since World War II, the U.S. government has been relocating the world's geniuses (and their families) to the Pacific Northwest town of Eureka. Daily life there shifts between amazing innovation and total chaos. U.S. Marshal Jack Carter learns this first-hand when his car breaks down in Eureka, stranding him among the town's eccentric citizens. When they unleash a scientific creation still unknown to the outside world, it's up to Carter to restore order. Subsequently, he's let in on one of America's best-kept secrets.  Available on Amazon Prime.  5/5.
Our Girl - Taking destiny into their own hands, British Army female medics of 2 Sections are dispatched on different missions, where they encounter the heartbreak and realities of life on the battlefield.  5/5.
Political:
The Crown - This lavish, Netflix-original drama chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth II from the 1940s to modern times. The series begins with an inside look at the early reign of the queen, who ascended the throne at age 25 after the death of her father, King George VI. As the decades pass, personal intrigues, romances, and political rivalries are revealed that played a big role in events that shaped the later years of the 20th century.  Available on Netflix. 4/5.
Victoria - The monarch's life is chronicled as the story begins with the death of King William IV in 1837, her accession to the throne at the tender age of 18 and her relationships with the influential forces around her. With the advice of the prime minister Lord Melbourne and the support of her husband Prince Albert the young queen flourishes and establishes herself in her newfound role. Available on Amazon Prime. 4/5.

Diet Culture & POC Part II | Beauty Standards, Inclusiveness & Representation
I’m sorry it has taken me some time to get around to this post...but as promised, I am back to talk about diet culture & the impact it has on people of color, specifically through beauty standards (which will cover inclusiveness and representation). Let’s go!
Tumblr media
                     -------------------------------------------------------------------
Before we start, we have to address a pretty uncomfortable concept for some to sit with: white privilege.
White privilege, as defined by Francis E. Kendall, Ph.D., is “an institutional (rather than personal) set of benefits granted to those of us who, by race, resemble the powerful positions in our institutions...[with one of the greatest privileges being] having greater access to power and resources” (Kendall, 2002).
                       -------------------------------------------------------------------
Now that you know the definition of white privilege, consider the world around you. Are you able to pinpoint any examples of white privilege in your own life?
If you can’t think of anything, consider dieting/diet culture.
What do you think of when you think about dieting?
What about health foods? Health trends? Health/wellness activities?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For me, I often think about yoga studios, chia seed/kale smoothies & overpriced food from Whole Foods, Gold’s Gyms, detox teas and wraps.
Above all this?
I think of wealthy, beautiful, thin/perfectly hour glass-shaped white women and beefy white guys on Instagram telling people “If you work hard enough/if you follow my routine/if you buy my supplements, you can be fit and healthy like me!”
In my eyes, while there are so many problems with diet culture, one of its biggest pitfalls is its defense and support of a specific standard of beauty, specifically white beauty as the standard.
“Light skin color and caucasoid features have traditionally been associated with attractiveness, beauty, and superiority” (Mucherah & Frazier, 2013).
Tumblr media
For example, if you type in “fitness magazine” into Google Images, you will see majority white men and women with a few images of fit women and men of color here and there, yet they often still embody the white standard of beauty (e.g. thin, similar facial features, etc).
So why does this matter?
People of color often experience low self esteem (Mucherah & Frazier, 2013) and sometimes even undiagnosed and/or untreated disordered eating behaviors (Belgrave & Javier, 2017) as a byproduct of “skin [ultimately determining] identity and attitudes towards self-worth” (Mucherah & Frazier, 2013).
By not including people of color, particularly people of color in varying shapes and sizes, of various cultural backgrounds and dietary customs, they are often unable to find themselves within the realm of health and wellness. Instead, they will run after an already-unobtainable, unrealistic version of health and wellness in the form of a white person and ultimately, embody an unhealthy version of themselves as it was a version not meant for them.
So what does this mean?
As with many mediums in life (e.g. cinema, music, medicine, etc), people of color need to be brought into center stage. We need to be seeing more people of color, in varying sizes, with varying health conditions preaching beauty beyond skin/size/culture...but I’m rambling and am lost in my thoughts (with many more words I want to say) now. Let’s save this conversation for another day!
For now, keep your heart & mind open!
Ellen
*I may come back and edit/expand. My brain is honestly fried right now. My apologies if this doesn’t make complete sense...

Regina Carter
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Regina Carter (born August 6, 1966) is an American jazz violinist. She is the cousin of jazz saxophonist James Carter.
Early life
Carter was born in Detroit and was one of three children in her family.
She began piano lessons at the age of two after playing a melody by ear for her brother's piano teacher. After she deliberately played the wrong ending note at a concert, the piano teacher suggested she take up the violin. She suggested that the Suzuki Method was more conducive to her creativity. Carter's mother enrolled her at the Detroit Community Music School when she was four years old and she began studying the violin. She still studied the piano, as well as tap and ballet.
As a teenager, she played in the youth division of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. While at school, she was able to take master classes from Itzhak Perlman and Yehudi Menuhin.
Carter attended Cass Technical High School with a close friend, jazz singer Carla Cook, who introduced her to Ella Fitzgerald. In high school, Carter performed with the Detroit Civic Orchestra and played in a pop-funk group named Brainstorm. In addition to taking violin lessons, she also took viola, oboe, and choir lessons.
Carter was studying classical violin at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston when she decided to switch to jazz, but the school did not have that as a program. She transferred to Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Here she studied jazz with Marcus Belgrave. Through Belgrave Carter was able to meet a lot of people active in the Detroit jazz scene, including Lyman Woodard. She graduated in 1985. After graduating, she taught strings in Detroit public schools. Needing a change of scene, she moved to Europe and spent two years in Germany. While making connections, she worked as a nanny for a German family and taught violin on a U.S. military base.
Career
Carter returned to the U.S. and first came into the spotlight as the violinist for the all female pop-jazz quintet Straight Ahead in 1987, with Cynthia Dewberry, Gailyn Mckinney, Eileen Orr, and Marion Hayden. In the early to mid-1990s, Branford Marsalis was quoted as saying, "They truly swing." They released a trio of albums on the Atlantic Jazz label including their self-titled debut, Body and Soul, andLook Straight Ahead. Carter went solo before the release of their third album, Dance of the Forest Rain, and established herself as a force in the jazz world on the violin. In 1991 she left the band and moved to New York City.
While in New York she was a relative unknown and undertook work accompanying performers such as Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Billy Joel, and Dolly Parton. She also played with Max Roach and Oliver Lake, as well as being in the String Trio of New York. Carter worked on the albums Intermobility (1993), Octagon (1994), and Blues...? (1996) with the group.
While with the trio, she released her first solo CD, Regina Carter (1995). 1997 saw the release of her second solo album dedicated to her mother, entitled Something For Grace. She toured with Wynton Marsalis for the 1997 production Blood on the Fields. She then changed record companies, from Atlantic Records to Verve Music Group, which allowed her more artistic freedom and she releasedRhythms of the Heart (1999).
She released Motor City Moments in 2000, paying homage to her hometown.
In December 2001, she played a concert in Genoa on Il Cannone Guarnerius, once owned and favoured by Niccolò Paganini, a violin that was made in 1743. The violin was bequeathed to Genoa after Paganini's death in 1840. The name of instrument is given because an "explosive" sound can be achieved. Carter was invited to play after the incidents of the September 11 attacks as a gesture of solidarity. She was both the first jazz musician and African American to play the instrument. She later recorded Paganini: After a Dream for Verve Records. The album featured classical works by Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy, and Cinema Paradiso by Ennio Morricone.
I'll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey, Carter's sixth CD and was conceived as a tribute album to her late mother, which included some of her favorites as well as American standards from the 1920s-1940s. Some songs include "Blue Rose" (Duke Ellington), "Sentimental Journey" (Les Brown), "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" (Ella Fitzgerald), as well as "I'll Be Seeing You".
Active as an educator, mentor, and proponent of the Suzuki method, Carter has taught at numerous institutions, including at Berklee College of Music, and two appearances at Stanford Jazz Workshop.
She currently performs at the head of a quintet. In May 2006, she was touring with Mark Krose (clarinet), Xavier Davis (piano), Alvester Garnett (drums)(still with her in 2011), and Matt Parish (Upright bass).
Carter was awarded a MacArthur Fellows Program grant, also known as a "genius grant", in September 2006. The award includes a grant of $500,000 over five years, and the committee stated this about Carter:
Regina Carter is a master of improvisational jazz violin. Though her work draws upon a wide range of musical influences – including Motown, Afro-Cuban, Swing, Bebop, Folk, and World – she has crafted a signature voice and style....Carter's performances highlight the often overlooked potential of the jazz violin for its lyric, melodic, and percussive potential. Her early training as a classical musician is reflected in the fluidity, grace, and balance of her performance. Carter's repertoire retains a firm connection with the familiar while venturing in new, unexpected directions....Through artistry with an instrument that has been defined predominantly by the classical tradition, Carter is pioneering new possibilities for the violin and for jazz.
Carter married Alvester Garnett in Detroit, Michigan, on September 5, 2004. They knew each other because Garnett plays drums in her band.

The Chase Files Daily  Newscap 6/17/2019
Good MORNING  #realdreamchasers! Here is The Chase Files Daily News Cap for Monday 17th June 2019. Remember you can read full articles for FREE via Barbados Today (BT), Barbados Government Information Services (BGIS) or by purchasing a Daily Nation Newspaper (DN).
Tumblr media
‘NO MONEY GRAB’ – There will be relief from July paydays for property owners with high land tax bills, says Minister in the Ministry of Finance Ryan Straughn. He said the savings Barbadians would be making in their income tax deductions, particularly middle-income earners would more than makeup for the hike in taxes on their properties. Straughn’s comments, in an interview with the Daily Nation, came against an avalanche of complaints by several property owners on social media and the radio call-in programmes. The higher bills, which were circulated from late May, have been termed a “money grab” by some. Middle-income earners, in particular, complained of being unreasonably squeezed, while others have stated the increase amounted to penalising property owners for being successful in “owning a piece of the rock”. The increase in property taxes were announced by Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Mia Mottley in her March Budget. She stated that properties valued over $450 000 and up to $800 000 would attract an increased rate, from 0.45 to 0.52 per cent, this fiscal year 2019-2020. (DN)
SANTIA BACK ON THE JOB TOMORROW – Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw has completed a major phase of her cancer treatment and is coming home. The St Michael South East representative said she was looking forward to taking over her portfolio fulltime, starting tomorrow. “I am ready to work full-time again. I am ready to get back on the ground and be with my constituents,” Bradshaw said from Miami yesterday. She said she had come to the end of seven weeks of proton therapy, a type of radiation treatment, on Friday. Her completion of that phase of treatment entitled her to perform the symbolic gesture of ringing the bell at the proton therapy facility at the Miami Cancer Institute in South Florida to signal that milestone. “I completed surgery in February, which was very successful, and overall I have responded well to the treatment. “I will be back in office on Monday but will still have to attend follow-ups over the next four months,” Bradshaw said. (DN)
ISLAND CONSTABLES CRY OUT – Island Constables say that for too long they have been working under poor conditions of service, and are calling on the current administration to make good on its promises to improve their lot. “We work for $8 an hour, 40 hours a week. Our last raise of pay was when Sir David Simmons was the Attorney General [prior to 2001], when it moved from $5 an hour,” lamented president of the Island Constables Association, Samuel Hackett. “Everything has gone up – bus fare, food, utilities – but our salary has not. We work under the police department and when you ask for a job letter to get a loan, they write that you are a temporary worker so you can’t get the loan because there’s no job security.” Hackett, who contacted the NATION on behalf of the association, pointed to a section on Page 19 of the Barbados Labour Party’s 2018 manifesto, which promised to bring the terms of conditions of special and island constables in line with human resource best practices. “I can’t say the last day I see a pay slip. We’ve had people forced to drop out of the union because they couldn’t afford the fees. We have island constables who go home with only an old age pension, no gratuity or Government pension.  (DN)
FATHER’S NIGHTMARE – Peter Peter did not imagine he would be having a Father’s Day minus his last child and only son. But after receiving the one call that is every parent’s nightmare, yesterday became a day he would never forget. Police responded to a shooting at Well Gap, Cave Hill, St Michael, about 12:30 a.m. yesterday. Investigations revealed a number of people were liming under a street light playing dominoes when a loud explosion was heard. The crowd dispersed and on their return, discovered the motionless body of 28-year-old Emelien Peter, of Meadowville Heights, Prior Park, St James, lying in a pool of blood. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Peter said family members were distraught and trying their best to compose themselves. “This morning I got a call about one o’clock that something had happened to him. When I went to the area . . . I was able to identify his body. That is more or less where things are at this point. Inevitably I’ve been getting lots of calls from family and friends and so forth,” he explained as family and friends kept a silent vigil at their St James residence. (DN)
PETER’S FAMILY REELING FROM TRAGIC DEATH – Emilien Peter’s family is reeling from his tragic death. “We are trying to compose ourselves as best as possible,” his father, Peter Peter, told the media earlier today. The 28-year-old of Meadowville Heights, Prior Park, St James was recorded as the island’s 30th homicide for the year. Police say a number of people were liming and playing dominoes under a streetlight at Well Gap, Cave Hill, St Michael, when they heard a loud explosion. They ran, and on returning discovered Peters’ motionless body in a pool of blood. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased was the only son and the youngest of his father’s four children. Peter said he got the call about the incident around 1 a.m. Sunday, June 16 and went to the scene where he identified his son’s body. The grieving father stated that he last saw his son who he described as a “quiet person” on Saturday morning around eleven o’clock just before he headed to work for his midday shift. The deceased was a University of West Indies science and electronics graduate, employed with the Barbados Meteorological Services. “I would hope they [the police] can find some way to bring that under control, particularly all of the gun activity. I hope the authorities can find some measures to bring some resolution to all the gun play that we are having,” he said. Police have issued an appeal to anyone with information about this latest murder to contact Police Emergency 211, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIPS (8477) or the nearest police station. (BT)
MAN DIES AFTER INGESTING POISONOUS SUBSTANCE – NATION NEWS has been informed that a man died after ingesting a poisonous substance. He passed away at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. More details as they come to hand. (DN)
WI DOWN, BUT NOT OUT – It’s not “do or die” for West Indies, but captain Jason Holder is hoping to celebrate his 100th One-Day International with a victory that would keep his team in the hunt for a semi-final place when their ICC World Cup campaign resumes today. Their recent record against Bangladesh has not been very encouraging though, having just lost to them in the tri-series in Ireland and also in their last series in 2018. However, captain Holder, who marks the special occasion, is confident they can turn the tide. Down to sixth position, they need two points to keep alive in the tournament, but West Indies desperately need to pick up the pieces after Friday’s disastrous match against England which they lost by eight wickets. “I know they (Bangladesh) have had the better of us in the recent past, but this is a different time, different occasion. We have to play some consistent cricket going into the second half of this tournament for us to make the semi-finals,” said Holder. (DN)
SPEIGHTSTOWN ESPLANADE RUN DOWN NCC SAYS NO TO PROPOSED UPGRADE – The Speightstown Esplanade, once the showpiece  of the northern hub, is in need of an upgrade. St Peter residents and those who conduct business in the town say it is in a sorry and confusing state, with the gazebo looking like new while the seating area, in contrast, looks shabby and in a state of ruin. These days the area, which is visited by busloads of tourists, caters more to vagrants and the homeless rather than the many northerners who used to pack the Esplanade for concerts, movie nights and other entertainment. David Belgrave, who no longer lives in St Peter but visits often to lime with the men he grew up with, said he was saddened by its condition. “We are all from the vicinity – schoolmates from All Saints School. We used to come here as boys when the Esplanade was an esplanade. I find that it is deteriorating – it needs upgrading.  (DN)

We started on time, maybe too on time as the room slowly filled and more seats had to be added to full capacity. A wonderful setting, at the Italian Cultural Institute overlooking a sunny Belgrave square, some old friends, some new acquaintances, lots of interest and good questions under the skilful and caring guide of Georgina Godwin. Milo Zigi had his moment, delivering in person, a cappella, his line from Mappillai as you can see in the video. Great memories for this British Commonwealth launch. (The bandh gala I'm wearing was made especially for me in Chennai thanks to Bassam Osman by @BAS - Bassam Apparel studio) almost all the photos, videos and gifs are by @tishanidoshi Thanks to Simon & @simonschusteruk for the support.
