La nueva época del Vive Latino es lo mismo, pero más caro. La diferencia fue el patrocinio de Amazon y la expansión del festival a través de su ecosistema digital. Más mercadotecnia que música. Un enorme tianguis mal sonorizado, con activaciones de marcas –perdón, brand experiences–, destinadas a desplumar al respetable. Fui de gorra el sábado 16 porque no me alcanza para el abono + transporte + comida + bebida. El asistente promedio desenfunda $5,200 varitos por día y el indicador fue el latón de cerveza oficial (710 ml) a $180, es decir, seis veces más cara. A 30º bajo el sol cayendo a plomo vt alv VL con tus precios inhumanos.

Aunque el cartel era largo, la asistencia se quedó corta por esos precios, porque se pudo ver en streaming y por falta de más grupos ancla. Mi ojo rojo estaba puesto en dos reliquias del postpunk y el hardcore, Billy Idol y Bad Religion. El que me sorprendió fue Panteón Rococó por su convocatoria, ocupó el lugar que se merece e hizo bailar a todos hasta el final. Vimos a Los Cafres y a Los Insite, aunque me quedé con ganas de ver a Greta Van Fleet, a Troker y a Santa Fe Klan porque se empalmaron y es imposible asimilar a tantos en una tarde. Caímos a Bad Religion, la leyenda aguerrida e impecable de California, pero corroboré lo que siempre les ha faltado: dos rayitas de mugre y maldad, son demasiado limpios, ordenados y correctos para ser críticos punks del sistema. En parte perdieron esa grasitud con el guitarrista Greg Hetson.

Billy Idol le dio la vuelta al festival e hizo que se tratara de él. Su espectáculo acaparó la atención y durante días la conversación en redes/medios giró en torno a su concierto con el guitarrista de cabecera, el fino y filoso Steve Stevens, dueño de un estilo inconfundible. Reyes de la radio y MTV, su gran mérito fue encapsular la furia y la bacanal del punk en poderosas y cachondísimas canciones de pop que sonorizaron la juventud de la Generación X. Fue el creador de “Dancing With Myself”, la declaración de principios de su banda setentera, Generation X, inspirada en el baile que inventó Sid Viciuos, el pogo dance. Con esa abrió las puertas de la nostalgia ochentera con muy buen wattaje, un sonido potente (no el pitero que conectan en las tardes) y una escenografía de ciudades creadas con IA que rescataban la sci-fi de sus videos sobre mundos postapocalípticos y zombis que hoy pululan en las plataformas.

No conozco ninguna experiencia que dispare las emociones como la música en vivo. Los chavorrucos no dejamos de hacer pogo –con la respectiva contractura lumbar el domingo–. Lo simbólico fue ver cómo un rockstar de 68 años importado de las antípodas del punk, rockeaba en forma envidiable las canciones que marcaron una época, “Eyes With Out a Face” o “Flesh for Fantasy”, y enganchaba a un público de viejitos prematuros que a los 35 ya sienten que son de la tercera edad. La intensidad aumentó hasta alcanzar la cima con “Rebel Yell”, el epítome de su discografía y de la energía del rock en vivo.

GENERATION SEX @ O2 APOLLO, MANCHESTER

It was the event all the old punks were waiting for, the Punk supergroup Generation Sex - featuring the whiplash smiler himself Billy Idol, Tony James (Generation X, Sputnik) Steve Jones and Paul Cook (Sex Pistols, The Professionals). I've photographed Billy many times and Paul Cook once when he played in The Professionals in 2018. Tony James, I haven't seen since the Sputnik days.

So, it was a pleasant surprise to find some great lighting and Billy coming to the edge of the stage, and I even got a fist pump. It certainly took me back to my teenage years following Generation X around the North West when they sang some of their memorable songs. Great to see Tony again and eventually to photograph Jonsesy too. Enjoy the shots below, a couple of my favourites. Just two other photographers in the pit tonight and not one of them was from the North West, both came from down South. Great to find two more photography friends though.
