Smartex announces 2024 modern textile factory committee with focus on “Building the Supply Chain Data Highway”
Tumblr media
In 2023, Smartex published the first-ever Modern Textile Factory (MTF) Report, pulling together insights from a group of experienced industry stakeholders ranging from factory owners & operators, material & process innovators, former brand executives, & policy experts.
The report covered how the four key industry trends of price, speed, quality & compliance were driving a necessary seachange in factory operations - making the modernization of operations crucial to maintaining competitiveness. Highlighting five pivotal pillars for factory enhancement, the report underscored the critical importance of resource efficiency, real-time data utilization, data-driven decision-making, stakeholder integration, & fostering high-quality jobs in safe work environments.
For 2024, Smartex is doubling down on its focus on factory operations by deep diving into the crucial & much needed creation of a robust data highway that connects all tiers of the supply chain. Recognizing that data is the cornerstone of informed decision-making, this year's focus aims to understand existing data needs & communication processes, & discuss how this can be radically & pragmatically improved across the textile supply chain.

IFS officers must play effective role in protecting forests from illegal activities: Murmu
Asserting that forests are essential for the social, cultural and economic development, President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday asked Indian Forest Service officers to play an effective role in protecting them from illegal activities. Addressing probationers of the IFS, who had called on her at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here, Murmu said India is giving special attention to the rights of forest dwelling communities. “The symbiotic relationship of the forest dwellers including tribal communities, with the forests is now widely recognised and factored in our development choices. It is responsibility of Indian Forest Service officers to make these communities aware of their rights and duties towards conservation and protection of bio-diversity,” she said. Wide ranging reforms are underway for effective participatory management and improved access to more efficient market systems for major and minor produce, Murmu said. Referring to incidents of large forest fires in various parts of India and the world, the president said, “We have a big challenge of not just conserving the forests but dealing with climate change”. “Today we have new technologies and concepts of urban forestry, forest risk mitigation, data driven forest management and climate-smart forest economies. You should innovate and come out with new methods for sustainable management of India’s forest resources. “You must also play an effective role in protecting our forests from illegal activities which have negative economic and environmental impact,” she said. Nature has given us bountiful presents and it is the duty of each one of us to be sensitive and responsible towards the environment, the president said. “Forests are the anchors for all life on earth. Their role varies from providing wildlife habitats and being livelihood source, to promoting economic activities and serving as large carbon sinks. They are home to many endangered species of the world,” she said. The diverse range of forests found in India is rarely seen in other countries, Murmu said. “Minor forest produce supports livelihood of well over 27 crore people in our country. Forests have high medicinal value too. In India, only 15 per cent of medicinal plants are cultivated while 85 per cent are collected from forests and other natural habitats,” the president said. Murmu said the forest officers are the guardians of “our rich and diverse forest wealth”. “You are also protectors of the heritage and culture of our forest dwelling communities. You have a key role to play in maintaining ecological stability of the country through participatory sustainable management,” she said. Murmu said she was happy to know that more women are now joining forest services. The ‘green queens’ as they are called, have proved themselves in the physically demanding arena and they provide inspiration to young women across the country to become forest officers, the president said. “Our forest officers have been doing great job as conservators and guardians of nature. But with the changing environment and development landscape, your role and the expectations from you, have increased. I am sure you will live up to the rising expectations,” she added.

Global Waste to Energy Market
Global Waste to Energy Market Size, Share, Growth, Industry Trends and Forecast 2020-2030
Waste to energy conversion is a process of generating energy by the treatment of waste material and garbage from different sections of the society. The burning of waste produces combustible fuel such as synthetic fuels, ethanol, methanol and methane. Waste to energy conversion is highly beneficial to produce heat or electricity to be used in various sectors worldwide. The use of combustion and bacterial fermentation to recover energy in the form of electricity and steam, from urban wastes decreases the volume of the original waste by 90%. Also, waste contains fossil derived materials such as plastics which are not renewable. Therefore, proper treatment of effluents and decayed products from industrial, residential or medical sectors can provides renewable and environment-friendly source of energy. It leads to reduction in the use of fossil fuels and carbon emissions. The global waste to energy market size was estimated at USD 33299.7 million in 2020, and is expected to reach USD 67995.95 million by 2030, growing with a CAGR of 7.4%

Market Dynamics and Factors:
Growing energy demand and depletion of conventional energy resources are the major factors driving the waste to energy market. Production of reusable energy from waste by using thermal and biological technology is gaining global attention. In thermal technology, incineration is the most well-known procedure for the processing of MSW (Municipal Solid Waste). Industrial wastes such as toxic chemicals along with medicinal wastes like syringe, used bandages, tissues and other medical supplies increase the soil pollution when submerged in landfills. Hence, anaerobic digestion is becoming commercially viable to treat the waste biologically and produce biogas. The energy is also used in transport fuel like bio-diesel and bio-jet fuel. Furthermore, ethanol is produced by blending of gasoline and ethanol which is expected to positively impact the global waste to energy market. The major restraining factor is the high construction cost of waste to energy plants and their maintenance charges. Anaerobic digestion process takes five years to complete which is a hindrance to the waste to energy market growth. However, government initiatives to provide clean energy, encouragements to use bio – CNG and PPP (Private Public partnerships) are expected to bring new opportunities in the near future.

The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) has announced the results of a small clinical study that was conducted in the Republic of Azerbaijan. The results from a trial that looked at how AstraZeneca and Sputnik Light doses reacted when combined.
And the results are preliminary but positive.
This could take us one step closer to the idea that mixing two vaccines may be possible and safe.
The study uses the first component of the Sputnik V vaccine (aka Sputnik Light). Sputnik V is a two-dose vaccine made from recombinant adenovirus 26 (Ad26) and adenovirus 5 (Ad5) (Common cold-causing viruses). The first dose (Ad26) is the primary vaccine and the second (Ad5) is the booster shot. The Sputnik Light vaccine is made from Ad26, which is the first part of the Sputnik V vaccine.
Twenty-eight days after vaccination, the Sputnik Light vaccine was 79.4 percent effective against the virus. According to a statement released by the RDIF, the efficacy rate is based on data from Russia’s vaccination program, which ran from 5 December, 2020, to 15 April, 2021.
“Vaccine cocktail" or heterogenous boosting approach, reports News18, was the foundation of Sputnik V. and this approach has succeeded in creating better immunity against the virus.
The AstraZeneca vaccine was developed in cooperation with Oxford University, and is 63.09 percent effective against the SARS-CoV-2 infection. It also has some effect on the newer variants of the virus. Studies have shown that longer intervals between the two doses (ranging from eight to 12 weeks) are associated with greater vaccine efficacy. It is a weakened version of a common cold virus taken from chimpanzees, which has been modified to look more like coronavirus.
Both vaccines use modified viruses that are harmless and act as a vehicle to carry genetic information that helps the human body build immunity against future infections.
A Memorandum of Intent was signed in December 2020, in the presence of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, between RDIF, the Gamaleya Center, AstraZeneca and R-Pharm.
The study in Azerbaijan began in February 2021. As many as 64 volunteers have been vaccinated till now and the enrollment of volunteers is still ongoing. Preliminary data from the first 20 participants shows antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus spike protein (S-protein) were elicited in 100 percent of cases. There have been no adverse events or infections after vaccination.
Other clinical trials for the combined vaccines are being carried out in UAE and Argentina, while regulatory approval to conduct trials has been granted in Russia and Belarus.
Reuters reports state five Russian clinics will hold trials that will be completed in early March next year, according to the state drug register.
“More trials of Sputnik Light with other producers are also underway in different countries in order to increase the efficacy of other vaccines,” Sputnik V’s developers reported on Twitter.
In India, Sputnik V is being manufactured and distributed by Dr Reddy's Laboratory, and other drug manufacturers include Gland Pharma, Hetero Pharma, Stellis Bio and Virchow Biotech.
The Serum Institute of India is in charge of the distribution of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which is being sold under the Covishield name.
When Tech2 contacted the firms for their response to the latest development, both companies refused to comment on the matter at this time.
Combined vaccines trials in India
There are several trials being conducted around the world to understand if mixing vaccines is safe. In India, there have been reports about the Centre looking into studying the effects of mixing shots of two different vaccines. Niti Aayog member VK Paul had said, "It [vaccine mixing] is plausible. But there need to be more studies... Our experts are also continuously studying…Scientifically, there is no problem.”
There is a definite possibility that mixing vaccines could either generate a stronger immunity or more antibodies, said AIIMS chief Dr Randeep Guleria. "This is something that has been looked at in the past - giving one vaccine as the priming shot and another as the booster.”
Serum Institute of India (SII) chairman Dr Cyrus Poonawalla has previously said he is not in favour of administering two different coronavirus vaccines for better efficacy, as it has not been proven in field trials involving thousands of participants.
He said, "I am against the mixing of two different vaccines. There is no need to mix two different vaccines...if cocktail vaccines are administered and if the result is not good, then SII may say that another vaccine was not good, vice versa, the other company might say that since you mixed Serum's vaccine, it did not give desired results,"
In India, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is conducting a study involving 98 people, 18 of whom had inadvertently received Covishield as the first dose and Covaxin as the second, in Uttar Pradesh. It has shown that combining Covishield and Covaxin vaccines elicited better defence than two doses of the same vaccine. The immunisation with the combined vaccine doses was safe and adverse effects were also found to be similar when compared to the people who received the same vaccine with both doses.

India's great athlete PV Sandhu
P V Sindhu was born into a Telugu based Jat family.  Sindhu's father PV Raman and mother P Vijay have both been volleyball players.  While Sindhu plays badminton.
When asked about this by her father, they say that she was very impressed with the success of former Badminton and current coach Pullela Gopichand of India.  One day the outgoing Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu N.  Pullela Gopichand was honored by Chandrababu.  Seeing which PV Sindhu was very impressed and chose badminton
That day i.e. in 2001 Pullela Gopichand was All England Open Badminton Champion.  Due to which Sindhu was very impressed and determined to become a badminton player.
 Badminton life
In this way, Sindhu learned the basics of badminton at the Badminton Court of the Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications in Secunderabad, under the guidance of coach Mahbub Ali, who teaches badminton.
After that she started learning the nuances of badminton from Inspiring Man i.e. Pullela Gopichand.
Sindhu's path was not so easy.  There was a long distance of 56 km between his home and Badminton Academy, due to which five hours of his day was spent traveling.
Sindhu did not hold back from working hard since childhood.  Sindhu used to walk from her house to the academy at 4 am to reach the academy on time.  (Because the afternoon session was a reserve for world star Saina Nehwal.) She then reached her destination on time.
After coming to the academy, Pullela used to sweat a lot daily under the guidance of Gopichand and practiced a lot with his fellow players and returned to his home in the late evening.
This was the routine of 12-year-old Sindhu, which is 5 times harder than the routine of any common person.
 Winning campaign
Well, due to constant hard work and early learning of the techniques of badminton, she became a strong player.  Due to which, at that very young age, he won a heap of victorious medals.  As a result, Sindhu soon proved to be the ace of her region.
Sindhu won the flag at the national level by winning the Under 10, 13, and 14 titles of the All India Ranking Championship.
With such an outstanding performance, Sindhu soon got a chance to showcase her jewelery at the 2009 Sub-Junior Asian Badminton Championships, where she tasted her first international win by winning the Bronze medal.
This was the beginning of tasting the victory at the international level, winning the Asia Youth Under 19 championship in July 2012.
In the same year, in the China Master Super Series tournament, beating the 2012 London Olympic champion Lee Jurai created a storm in the whole badminton world.
Sindhu suffered injury at this China Open, yet she participated in 77th Senior National Badminton Championships and also reached the finals.  But his wicket was heavy on his game, due to which he lost the final match by 15-21, 21-15, 15-21 to Sayli Gokhale.
After this championship, Sindhu decided to treat her injury first, which led to her dropping the Japan Open and several national championships.
However, when P V Sindhu got fit, she competed in the Syed Modi India Grand Prix Gold held in Lucknow in December 2012, where she had to settle for second place, while she did not lose a single set until reaching the final.
But despite losing in the final match, he got a big advantage in the world rankings.  She went on to rank 15th in world badminton, her career best ranking.
The year of 2013 was a big bang for him, where he won against the best players of the world.  This year Sindhu won the Malaysian Open Title and won the world no.  Becoming the first Indian woman to win the World Championship by defeating 2 Chinese player Wang Yihan in the quarterfinals and 7th ranked Chinese player Wang Xiian in the final.
This year his journey to victory did not stop here.  She won her first Grand Prix Gold by defeating Canadian Michelle Lee in the Macau Open Grand Prix Gold.
At the end of the year, Sindhu's victory gave her a huge gift when she was awarded the Arjuna Award by the Indian President.
Like in 2013, in 2014, P V Sindhu made a big debut in the badminton world with her spirits, where she reached the semi-finals at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and World Cup held in Denmark, World No.2 Xi'ian Wang and World No.  5 South Korea's player Bae Ion Joo retained his winning streak.  Due to which she became the first Indian woman to win consecutive medals in the World Cup.
P V Sindhu became faster and mature in his game as he won against the biggest players of the world.  Proof of this was seen in 2015, when they dusted off the top players of the world like Ty Joo Ing, Wang Ian and Carolina Marin at the Denmark Open.  But in the final, Li Jurai suffered a defeat.
Macau was able to retain its Grand Prix Gold by winning the Grand Prix Gold in November 2015.
 Rio Olympics
Successive wins had now become a habit for Sindhu, as we can see in 2016, where she won gold at the Malaysia Master Grand Prix Gold earlier this year and is now the Badminton World No.1 in the pre-quarterfinals at the Rio Olympics.  Tai Ju Ing, 8, held the world no. In the quarter-finals.  It made history by reaching the badminton final of the Rio Olympics by defeating 2nd ranked Chinese Wang Ehan and sixth-ranked Japanese player Nozomi Okuhara in the semi-finals.  Where he competed against world no.  1 Spanish player is from Carolina Marian.  There is a record of 3-4 between the two i.e. Sindhu has defeated Carolina 3 times, while Carolina has defeated Sindhu 4 times.

Tumblr media
Sanofi will shortly start human trials of a second coronavirus vaccine, developed with US biotech Translate Bio, after reporting that it stimulated antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in preclinical testing.
The French drugmaker’s Sanofi Pasteur vaccines division says it is planning a phase 1/2 trial of the mRNA-based vaccine, called MRT5500, before the end of the year. It started human testing of a protein subunit vaccine with partner GlaxoSmithKline last month.
There are already three other RNA-based vaccines in trials for COVID-19 from Moderna, Pfizer/BioNTech and CureVac, out of 42 candidates in clinical development, according to the World Health Organization’s latest update.
Among these, Pfizer/BioNTech’s BNT162b2 looks like it could claim the lead among the late-stage COVID-19 vaccine programmes, after safety issues halted trials of rival shots from Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca.
Data from a 195-patient phase 1 trial of BNT162b2 were published in the New England Journal of Medicine this week, showing that the shot stimulated neutralising antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 at a level similar or greater than those found in people who have recovered from infection with the virus.
Another vaccine – called BNT162b1 – was also effective in stimulating an antibody response but was associated with more systemic side effects, according to the trial investigators.
In preclinical testing involving mice and non-human primates, two doses of MRT500 also elicited a strong neutralising antibody response against SARS-CoV-2 that according to Sanofi were significantly higher than those observed in COVID-19 patients.
Sanofi and Massachusetts-based Translate Bio started to work together on the mRNA vaccine programme in March, and expanded the effort in June to include all infectious disease areas after identifying promising lead candidates.
Under the expanded deal, Translate stands to receive $425 million in upfront payment and Sanofi common stock, plus up to $1.9 billion in milestone payments, providing another endorsement of the potential for mRNA to generate vaccines.
Russia approves second shot
Sanofi is one of the signatories of a pledge by nine leading companies in the race to develop a COVID-19 vaccine that they will only apply for approval after phase 3 studies have been completed and their candidates have been thoroughly tested.
Russia however has forged ahead with its controversial approach to the pandemic by approving a second SARS-CoV-2 vaccine based on only preliminary human testing, just three months after clearing the Gamaleya Institute’s Sputnik V shot on similarly scant data.
The latest – called EpiVacCorona – was developed by the Vektor State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology and has been cleared on the strength of clinical testing in just 100 subjects, according to local media reports.
Russian president Vladimir Putin announced the latest approval on state television. adding to concern that Russia has been rushing vaccines to approval in order to claim political capital.
Both the approved vaccines are now in phase 3 trials involving tens of thousands of patients, but results from those are not expected until mid-2021. Regardless, Russia has said it had accepted orders for 200 million doses of Sputnik V from Brazil, India and Mexico.
Russia is the world’s fourth-most affected country by the coronavirus pandemic with a total of 1.37 million cases and a little over 23,000 deaths.
Chinese inactivated vaccine safe
Also this week, A Chinese COVID-19 vaccine based on inactivated coronavirus has been shown to be safe and stimulate an antibody response in a preliminary 640-patient phase 1/2 trial has been published in The Lancet Infectious Disease journal.
Developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Products, the BBIBP-CorV vaccine was given as a two-dose regimen and was found the be safe across a broad age range – from 18 to 80 – and stimulated a neutralising antibody response in all immunised subjects by day 42, the final day of follow-up.
Antibody levels were lower in older recipients, however. The authors said the results were encouraging, but it is not possible to say yet whether the vaccine will be protective against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

White House official favours giving tax incentives to companies to move to US from China - Times of India

White House official favours giving tax incentives to companies to move to US from China - Times of India
Tumblr media
WASHINGTON: A top economic advisor to US President Donald Trump on Friday favoured giving tax incentives to American companies to move their economic base from China to America, amidst a new rift in the bilateral relationship over Beijing’s handling of the coronavirus crisis. The US has expressed disappointment over China’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic which has claimed 87,530 lives in America. China has also been accused of stealing Intellectual Property and research work. The US and China in the beginning of the year signed Phase-1 of a trade deal, ending a bitter two-year tariff war that had rattled the global economy. “It’s not a policy yet, but we want to make America the most attractive place to do work,” White House National Economic Council director Larry Kudlow told reporters on Friday, amidst reports that a number of companies are looking to move their manufacturing base out of China. “I’m a believer in rewarding not punishing, so my thought is in addition to the full expensing 100 per cent capital expensing why not provide a 50 per cent discount for the corporate tax rate if you are moving from outside the US to the US,” he said. Kudlow suggested reducing the corporate tax from the present 21 per cent to 10.5 per cent. “Why not try for a couple of years or longer a 10.5 per cent rate which would make us extremely competitive and hospitable to new investments here or for moving expenses not only 100 per cent full expensing but also we may add some assistance,” Kudlow said. “That’s another thought to help them come here. In other words, I want to reward not punish. Those are options. Those are options. Again this is pre-decisional; these are just things that we are looking at internally,” he said. On Thursday, a top US senator unveiled an 18-point plan, including enhancing military ties with India, to hold the Chinese government accountable for its “lies, deception, and cover-ups” that led to the global COVID-19 pandemic. President Trump has been pressing China to agree for an inquiry into the origin of the virus, including the allegation that it emerged from a bio-lab in Wuhan. He has threatened to cut off “the whole relationship” China. China has denied America’s accusation of covering up the extent of its coronavirus outbreak and accused the US of attempting to divert the public attention by insinuating that the virus originated from a virology laboratory in Wuhan. “China was the first country to report the COVID-19 to the World Health Organisation (WHO), (and) that doesn’t mean the virus originated from Wuhan… There has never been any concealment, and we’ll never allow any concealment,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said last month. “A discerning person will understand at a glance that the purpose is to create confusion, divert public attention, and shirk their responsibility,” he said. The novel coronavirus which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan last year has claimed 307,666 lives and infected more than 4.5 million people globally, according to Johns Hopkins university data. The US is the worst affected country with 87,530 deaths and over 1.4 million infections reported so far.

'Plandemic' news, et al: Why do so many religious believers quickly embrace conspiracies?
Tumblr media
The other day, I was talking with a friend in another state over the phone about the coronavirus crisis.
Suddenly, our conversation veered in a whole other direction. The virus, she said, was the work of a cabal of billionaires and world leaders. She recommended the work of Dr. Rashid Buttar, an anti-vaxxer and conspiracy theorist. My friend said that she didn’t believe anything the media said anymore.
This friend is an educated woman who attends a nondenominational charismatic church. She has worked in the health care industry for many years. She was also touting “Plandemic,” the movie that alleges that the pandemic is a nefarious creation by hidden overlords in government, media and finance. Facebook, Vimeo, Twitter and YouTube have been working overtime to get it off their feeds.
Which seems very odd. Is “Plandemic” that dangerous? I can think of a lot of more objectionable stuff on those platforms, ie pornography, than a conspiracy film. I watched the movie and don’t buy the claim that it’s “harmful” to have it publicly posted.
I posted a connection to “Plandemic” atop this post, only to see it get zinged by YouTube. I’ve tried several times to post a replacement video and it’s been taken down within the hour. So here (at the top of this post) is a video about the video. Whether it will be working when this post goes public is anyone’s guess.
Meanwhile — this Atlanta-Journal Constitution story gives some helpful background on the movie. I started looking up “Plandemic,” wondering if my friend was the only conservative Christian to latch onto this. I found a piece by Marshall Allen, a ProPublica health writer (and Fuller Theological Seminary grad) who was also finding religion connections.
My brother is a pastor in Colorado and had someone he respects urge him to watch “Plandemic,” a 26-minute video that promises to reveal the “hidden agenda” behind the COVID-19 pandemic. I called him and he shared his concern: People seem to be taking the conspiracy theories presented in “Plandemic” seriously. He wondered if I could write something up that he could pass along to them, to help people distinguish between sound reporting and conspiracy thinking or propaganda.
Sensational videos, memes, rants and more about COVID-19 are likely to keep coming. With society polarized and deep distrust of the media, the government and other institutions, such content is a way for bad actors to sow discord, mostly via social media. We saw it with Russia in the 2016 election and we should expect it to continue.
If there’s one group that tends not to trust the media, it’s folks on the conservative religious end of things. They sense they are aliens in our culture and what better represents the dominant culture than the news media?
But what surprised me is how easily “Plandemic” sank its hooks into some of my friends. My brother also felt alarmed that his own church members and leaders in other churches might be tempted to buy into it…
There’s never just one side to a story. I mentioned this point in 2018 when I wrote about my faith and the biblical basis for investigative reporting. One of my favorite Proverbs says, “The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.” So a fair presentation should at least acknowledge opposing points of view.
I don’t think that Allen’s mention of his pastor/brother and then his own faith is a coincidence. It’s a subtle signal to any folks –- of certain religious persuasions –- who might be reading it that says '“Hey folks: I’m in your tribe and I’m not out to mislead you.”
Tumblr media
So far, secular reporting about COVID-19 conspiracy theories haven’t pointed toward the religious community. But every warning I see on my Facebook feed about a conspiracy tends to come from someone in the conservative Christian universe.
I’m not alone. A writer for Patheos posted a similar observation on Friday.
This last week, I’ve had so many fellow evangelicals sharing bogus videos and links promising to reveal the “truth about COVID-19.” As social media platforms removed false information (because it put people at risk), it only seemed to feed into the conspiratorial fire of the posters…
The sheer number of Christians sharing conspiracy theories desperately needs to be addressed. The gospel already requires people to suspend a certain amount of disbelief to embrace something that — at first hearing — sounds incredibly fanciful. It doesn’t do us any favors if the messengers are known for spreading half-truths and nonsense.
Churches need to teach their members about discernment, now more than ever. I believe that evangelical Christians are particularly susceptible to believing dangerous conspiracy theories, and they need to learn how to become more discerning.
Back on April 15, Christianity Today warned readers that Christians are disproportionately fooled by coronavirus theories. In an opinion piece directed toward evangelicals, Ed Stetzer, executive director of the Billy Graham Center at Wheaton College, wrote:
Unless you believe President Trump, Republicans and Democrats in Congress, the media, and the scientific community are all in league together (a real leap of faith), you are just embarrassing yourself when you spread Coronavirus conspiracies. These vast conspiracies would mean that President Trump, himself, knew this was a bioweapon, is part of the plan to end religious liberty, plans to use a potential vaccine as some mark of the beast, and somehow 5G is part of it all. (Yes, that’s all out there, one web search away— and in far too many Christian social media feeds.) …
If you still insist on spreading such misinformation, would you please consider taking Christian off your bio so the rest of us don’t have to share in the embarrassment?
This is not just the Christians, by the way.
The Guardian reported a month ago that Hindus are beating up Muslims in India because of “corona jihad;” a belief in a hidden Muslim conspiracy to spread the virus to Hindus. It didn’t help that an Islamic missionary meeting in south Delhi in mid-March is credited with spreading the virus around the country.
On April 24, theconversation.com posted a piece about how Covid-19 has greatly ramped up demonization of British Muslims on social media via conspiracy theories. And then there are the anti-Semitic theories. Haaretz reported on May 3 about far-right theories on a Jewish-Chinese cabal that spread COVID-19.
This is just a snippet of what’s out there.
The gospel is public information, not hidden, not secret. This is one of many reasons that Christians don’t trust or follow conspiracy theories but the rather the risen Lord of history. https://t.co/zgZAYxV2vb
— kennethtanner (@kennethtanner) April 18, 2020
I know that reporters have a lot on their plate these days reporting about the coronavirus crisis.
Nevertheless, please start tracking those who are spreading conspiracy theories, why they feel so moved to do so and why so many of them have religious connections of one sort of another. It’s part of this global story.

Find Virtual Assistants for Small Business
Tumblr media
In his 2012 State of the Nation Address, President Barack Obama declared Small Businesses as “engines of job creation” and crucial in boosting the US economy. To support Small Businesses, the Obama Administration passed 18 tax cuts including capital gains on key investments, incentives for hiring and access to capital they need for expansion. 99.7% of all businesses with employees that registered in the US are considered Small Business. Small Businesses are defined by the US Small Business Association or USSBA as privately owned entities with less than 500 employees. Small Businesses are characterized as not “dominant” in their industry and as having scarce resources. The challenge facing Small Businesses is how to efficiently manage their costs without affecting revenue-generating programs and sustain the life of the enterprise. One of the proven strategies adopted by Small Business owners is to outsource support or administrative work to Virtual Assistants or VA’s. Outsourcing support services to Virtual Assistants allows the Small Business to focus more time and resources on functions that directly contribute to his or her stream of revenues. Second, it keeps his or her business costs within acceptable parameters. Maximising the Use of Virtual Assistants for Small Business Owners A common mistake made by Small Businesses hiring Virtual Assistants for the first time is undermining the value of support services for their enterprise. Support services are like the roots of a tree. You don’t see them but they are responsible for providing nutrients to the tree. For Small Business owners, it is absolutely crucial to fortify support services in order to keep their business well-organized and efficient. But because of their limited resources, Small Business owners tend to qualify and select Virtual Assistants on cost rather than merit. Before deciding on acquiring the services of a Virtual Assistant, the Small Business owner needs to firm up the answers to these questions: What are the objectives of my business? How do I plan to meet these objectives? Who do I need to help meet these objectives? How do I protect my business from unforeseen circumstances? Where do I see my business in the next 3 months? To give you an example on how these questions can be used as a frame of reference in building a virtual management team, let us suppose the Small Business owner runs a boutique insurance company. 1. What are the objectives of my business? As an owner of a small sized insurance company, objectives may include to expand the portfolio of clientele or focus on a specific type of insurance coverage like retirement plans. 2. How do I plan to meet these objectives? In order to expand his portfolio of clientele, the business owner needs to have appointments with prospects everyday of the week. The more appointments the better to increase the probability of closing a sale. These new appointments will require more allocation of business hours and thus, more organization in the weekly schedule of activities. 3. Who do I need to help meet these objectives? The business owner would need a Virtual Assistant with exceptional phone handling and organizational skills. The VA must have a disposition that is complimentary to the region he or she is calling. New Yorkers are more frank and value the direct approach than those in California who are more accommodating and casual in attitude. 4. How do I protect my business from unforeseen circumstances? If the job requires eight (8) hours of work from Monday to Friday, the business owner would be better off recruiting two (2) Virtual Assistants instead of one. Each VA shall work in four (4) hour shifts, five days a week. Keeping work hours to only four ensures sustained productivity especially if the shift enters graveyard hours. Second, having a second VA guarantees uninterrupted service should the other get sick or becomes unavailable. Third, a second VA gives you a benchmark on their performance. 5. Where do I see my business in the next three (3) months? Contracts for virtual assistance work are limited in tenure usually for a month or until the project is completed. But it takes time even for an experienced Virtual Assistant to be proficient at an appreciable level in the scope of work. If the VA’s performance is at par or exceeds expectation, it would be advisable to hire one who is open to long-term engagements. Having a Virtual Assistant is valuable in helping Small Business owners take their company to the next level. The key is for the Small Business owner to first understand and firm up his or her goals, objectives and methodologies so he or she can find the best fit VA to support the enterprise. Neuland Labs - a business set to enter flywheel mode or ...?
Disclosure: This is not a buy/hold/sell recommendation. This is for information purposes only.
Innovator Drug Development: For CDMOs, the most critical driver is presence of an innovator portfolio, specially with a wide spectrum from early stage to commercial manufacturing. Syngene and Neuland are CDMOs with significant revenue share from innovator portfolios, that received investments from global and local PE funds.
I recently came across this report from IQVIA on the 4 drivers of growth areas in Pharma and it got me interested in Neuland Labs Limited. I like businesses that operate as a niche in a large segment, acquire customer loyalty and then grow sales and margins hanging on to that customer loyalty instead of competing on price. Anyway, here are some thoughts on Neuland:
What do they do?
Neuland is a Hyderabad based, focused/pure-play API manufacturer. It produces 75 APIs from 3 plants (2 are USFDA approved - 3rd was recently acquired - more for backward integration). The US, Japan & Europe form 80%+ of its sales. Business segments Neuland has 3 business segments:
A high volume, low margin, highly competitive Prime API segment - major products are Ciprofloxacin, Levetiracetam, Levofloxacin, Mirtazapine Enalapril Maleate, Sotalol, Labetalol and Salbutamol.
A Speciality API segment -  currently has 25 molecules in this segment. Of these, patents for some molecules are yet to expire. In many molecules the co is either the sole or one of 2 suppliers even though few others may have filed a DMF. Important from revenue perspective Salmeterol, Dorzolamide, Paliperidone, Deferasirox, Donepezil and Brinzolamide.
A Custom Manufacturing Solutions segment - A typical pharma research or bio-tech startup based out of Switzerland or London or Tokyo would typically focus on research and outsource scale-manufacturing to low-cost countries provided regulatory standards are met. This outsourced manufacturing service is the CMS business of Neuland. It works with innovator pharma / biotech cos, both small and large and offers both small-scale clinical trial quantities & commercial-scale. It is equipped for Preclinical to Phase III through to commercial API manufacturing. Entire revenue in CMS from US, Europe & Japan. Neuland claims to have strong chemistry skills + consistently compliant facilities.
Tumblr media
Most of Neuland’s Indian peers are generic formulation makers - many of who derive significant share of sales in regulated markets where competitive intensity is increasing and price erosion is causing margins to fall.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, data from the Express Scripts’ Prescription Price Index suggests that average prices of branded drugs have been rising and remain unaffected by price erosion. Neuland’s CMS segment works directly with such innovator companies for clinical and commercial stage production of Intermediates & APIs for patent-protected drugs.
The CMS Business
There is a conscious attempt by the co to increase the share of Speciality and CMS businesses in the long run. ‘In the long run’ because CMS business would be volatile as it is initially heavily dependent on few companies and few molecules. Once more and more molecules get commercial approvals and client base widens, CMS can become a stable segment. Another reason is the Prime API segment itself is growing in volume terms.
In the longer run, the Speciality API and CMS business looks to be a game changer - a segment that is set to enter the flywheel mode, perhaps?
It has much lesser competitive intensity compared to its peers because it requires strong chemistry skills and loyal customer relationships. A client who engages Neuland for pre-commercial stage production is likely to continue the commercial relationship with Neuland as well. Hence, the nuances of supplying small batches for pre-clinical stage drugs is sort of an investment in customer acquisition which will yield results over time when these drugs get commercial approvals.
After the Chinese shut down of polluting industries in 2017-2019 and the 2020 Coronavirus crisis, pharma & biotech research companies looking to de-risk their supply chain from China would look for alternative contract manufacturers in India. One of the criteria in supplier selection would be the depth of the capabilities. Does the supplier import key intermediates from China or does he produce it himself? How many APIs can he make in-house? Neuland’s 30-year expertise in API making and its acquisition of Unit 3 will strengthen its in-house intermediates capabilities.
As Neuland acquires deeper chemistry skills, its competitive advantage in this field can further increase opportunities. We can substantiate from this con call excerpt:
Neuland being a pure play API company, we tend to give a lot of focus and priority to our CMS business. And unlike many Chinese companies which have many aspects of their business, they do custom synthesis, they do biology, they do BMTK, they do toxicology and lot of other activities. So the attention or the focus on the custom synthesis projects may not be as high. I think the third factor is at Neuland, we also tend to be very selective on the kind of projects we work on. They are specific areas in chemistry that we believe we are very strong in.... So that kind of selectivity and the inherent skills and the business model of the company helps us to differentiate ourselves from many of the Chinese competitors.
Unlike generic API manufacturing, the CMS business requires pro-activeness, foresight and constant R&D - some points to support Neuland:
Tumblr media
Total worldwide DMF count of 673
Management has guided filing of 8-10 DMFs/CEPs every year
Neuland is the first generic player to have a granted process patent for the preparation of Sugammadex Sodium in India. Sugammadex is used to reverse anesthesia. It has also filed a DMF and wants to be an early developer even though commercial launch will be post patent expiry around 2026 for US and Europe.
In FY 19, filed 20 patent applications of which 19 were in India and one in the US. In the same year, it secured seven granted patents (5 API process patents and 2 peptide technology related patents) in various geographies (Canada, India, Japan & Australia).
Neuland claims to be a leader in peptide technologies and capabilities. It predicts that in 15 years as many as 50% of all drugs could be peptide-based. 9/63 of the CMS projects of Neuland are peptide projects, though there are 0 commercial sales currently. In 2018, the company entered into a partnership with Jitsubo Co, owner of two key peptide technologies: Molecular Hiving™ for production of high quality and cost-competitive peptide APIs, and Peptune™ for novel peptide modification in drug discovery stages. The management also sees potential in Peptide based APIs for the generic API market and has invested in relevant capacities. Quoting from the Q2FY20 con call:
“We have been initially doing only like peptide building blocks and maybe low value items within peptide. But over the last 5-6 years, we slowly moved forward into peptide APIs and we have been working with a lot of innovators in the CMS space on peptide projects. And now what we have been trying to do in the last year or so is to actually develop peptide even for the generic markets and we are very excited with the market opportunity that generic peptides offer..........What excite us about peptides in the generic GDS space is that the market is not very crowded and there could be certain value addition Neuland could have because of our technology where we would be able to offer peptide API at comparable quality but at a lower cost. So that is the idea. We do not expect any immediate commercial opportunities on it, but some of the peptides that we are working on, the patents are also close to expiring. So if we are successful, then in a matter of 2 to 3 years, we could have some successful products in the market on peptides. “

A well known investor from Chennai known for his forensic eye once said that a good quality check for any listed Indian company is to see how many ‘Independent Directors’ don’t share the same surname as the promoters.
Where could it go wrong?
This is where we need to really dig deeper. None of the above information means the stock is investment worthy or not especially since I do not have a background in pharmaceuticals and most of my understanding here is basic. If you have a view point on the risks in Neuland’s business, would be greatful if you could share your opinion on the Neuland Labs Ltd thread on ValuePickr.
The numbers - The company seems to witness growth opportunities across 3 segments. They have guided volume growth along with margin expansion (co. aims at 18-20% ebitda in 3-4 years from 10-12% currently). Major capex is behind but 60-70 cr/year of product specific capex and maintenance capex would continue. Will this dilute asset turnovers? Debt levels at 200-220 crores are sort of worrying given their scale and margin profile. Key would be to monitor the next few years of debt addition + capex + R&D expenditure. Once that stabilises and growth continues, operating leverage can be expected.
In the CMS division, the company is subject to not just USFDA checks but also customer audits. Also, given that unit 3 will be subject to its first USFDA audit in the coming quarters, compliance risk looms.
