Progress Report
This week with this project has been difficult. Trying to go through the data that has been collected in GIS is proving to very difficult. I took ArcMap and popped it open, added a base map that has topography and labeled landmarks. I searched through the shapefiles available through Esri online and was able to find one that was the state of Florida and the boundaries of the counties. Using the editor tool, I highlighted individual counties that were not Orange county and deleted them. This just left the boundary of Orange county on the base map. Since the base map was of the world and we only need a small section for this project, I went into the data frame properties for the layers and used the clip tool. I then clipped the base map to only orange county. I did this step to save on processing power required for the project. There is no need to render the world if we are only working in a small portion. Once getting down to a workable area things began to get drastically more difficult. I attempted to take 2 of the .jpegs that have been gathered and then try to upload them into ArcMap. I was getting several errors and when I did not get errors the images would not load. I did get one of the images to load in, but since there is no location metadata on the images the projection was not correct. So I tried to convert them to transverse mercator so that I would be able to superimpose the images. I was not able to get past this step. I was getting several errors.
Talking about these issues with my partner, we discussed further steps for this project. Due to the struggle so far to simply project the image, and not having been able to properly work on the buildings and their location, we have dedicated ourselves to change the scope of our project. We began to look for a different visualization that may fit our ideas. We came across Google MyMaps and we got excited about the possibilities. This still keeps the visual map aspect of our original project, but allows us to go about it in a different manner.
For the visualization of this project we plan to use Google MyMaps. We plan to use this program to visualize different stories at different geographical locations associated with the Hungerford property. This would show the way that the Hungerford school was able to spread its influence far and wide. We will take a look at several people who passed through the property and where they later ended up. This visualization will help evaluate the potential reach of the Hungerford school and its teachings. Through primary sources provided in this class we will select a handful of influential figures and attempt to show their stories. Through visual analysis we expect to see the far reaching grasp of Hungerford that may not immediately be apparent. Our current working title for this project is “Branching out of Hungerford”.

Platform Capitalism
via The Next Web
Nick Srnicek in the second chapter of Platform Capitalism explores the characteristics of the platforms of the digital world through the lens of capitalism and its economic dynamics.
Capitalism, as an economic system, reinvents itself when a crisis hits. For example, at the end 1990s the end of the ban on commercial activities on the Internet was accompanied by a great enthusiasm. Everyone was investing in this market until it crashed because it was a giant market to sustain. Therefore, a few powerful players remained which adopted the data-centered business model like Google. The changes and technological development translate themselves in informational, or cognitive, or knowledge, or immaterial economy. The powerful players of the digital media world gain ownership over information rather than ownership over the means of production. Indeed, there is a shift toward a more immaterial production: cultural content, knowledge, and services. The richness of Internet-based companies relies on users’ data extraction. Data are the new oil; however, they are not completely immaterial. Data are stored into physical data centers and the global internet traffic requires an immense amount of energy to be sustained. Therefore, the product of work is immaterial, yet the infrastructure is material.
The business model for an effective data extraction revolves around the platform. But, what is a platform?
Srnicek explains that platforms are digital infrastructures that enable two or more groups to interact. They therefore position themselves as intermediaries that bring together different users (30). They provide the environment that enables the users to interact. Nevertheless, they do not constitute the environment solely since they are taking over the entirety of life becoming entities. Another characteristic of platforms is that they rely on the “network effect”: the more users are on the platform, the more the platform gains value. Platforms fight for attention economy and find ways to keep users on the platform as much time as possible.
Platforms are a new type of monopoly, employing cross-subsidisation for which one side of the platform reduces the cost of a service, while the other side raises the cost in order to make up for the losses. Platforms have control and governs all interactions possible in the game and they embody politics. The ownership of platforms is of both software and hardware, and who owns the entire unity holds code, data centers, and servers.
There are 5 types of platforms:
• Advertising Platform – the business model is based on extracting data from users, analyzing it, and transforming it in personalized data for targeted advertisements. Google and Facebook adopt this business model. For example, yesterday I searched on Google for the website of a shoes brand. Immediately after I closed the site, on my Facebook page (and on other social media), appeared several advertisements of shoes from that brand.
• Cloud Platform – the business model based on owning software and hardware and renting them out. Amazon is the largest cloud platform provided.
• Industrial Platform – it builds the hardware and software to transform traditional manufacturing into internet-connected processes and transforms goods into services.
• Product Platform – it transforms a traditional good into a service by collecting subscription fees. The example of this business model is Spotify for music industry.
• Lean Platform – it makes profit by cutting down the ownership of assets cost: it is based on outsourcing. For instance, Uber does not own a single car but it provides the taxi service and Airbnb, which is an accommodation provider, owns no property.

Reflection
This semester has been challenging in the aspect that I am not taking any classes for my major so I have not been as interested in my classes. However, I do have to apply for my major and attain a certain GPA to get in, so I wish I would have worked harder, especially first semester to get closer to a 4.0. But I am proud of myself because I did adjust to the transition to college with the amount of work I have to do each night.
My next step is to get into the Early Childhood Education program and actually enjoy the classes I am taking from here on out. I hope to raise my GPA in the next three years because I know it is possible, I just have to really work for it. I am genuinely excited to get into the elementary classrooms because I know that’s truly what I want to do with the rest of my life.
I have always enjoyed English, so I have enjoyed the class overall. My unpopular opinion is that I would much rather write a paper than take an exam, so I have enjoyed being able to do that this semester. However, I hate giving presentations more than anything. I know, “but you want to be a teacher??” Yes I do, I have taught in classrooms already and I love being in front of the class interacting with students, but when it comes to reading a presentation to my peers I can’t for whatever reason.

Internal Activism ?
Knitting has been a good therapy from day-to-day life, to get a break studying and work. Now, it has become a tradition for me to knit before I start working on my university assignments. It has become a coping mechanism.
Listen to the playlist I made for internal activism.
In the last few months interacting with knitting I have been thinking a lot about writing a manifesto for female promoters, because, there has not been enough conversation about it. There have been some manifesto’s about women in the music industry but not specifically women who promote shows. The promoter business again, is dominated by men and to enter as a women has it’s ups and downs. But there is also another aspect, promoter are expected to be party animals but I’m not or maybe I used to be when I started? The music environment changes individuals in good and bad ways. Gets you into some circles that you just want to see and not be a part of. I guess I have always been the odd one out in promoting shows in Lugano, Switzerland. Sometimes I think I was placed there as a joke, to see if I would be able to survive? But my passion for music and seeing my ultimate favourite or a band I admire play in my city is a feeling that nobody will be ever be able to take away from me. It’s not all selfish, I also enjoy letting other people discover new genres of music or weird bands. Overall, knitting has helped me find myself in messy promoting game. Maybe, to start a knitting club at concerts?
I’ve gained more ideas to further my future independent projects. Of course, with a little help of my friends. Sometimes, you might be scared of crazy ideas but if you believe in them and you have friends that support you, it’s the best combination. The key word is collaboration, we can try as much as we want to be “I can do it by myself” but get smart. This means connecting with the right people that you can trust with your projects. I’m speaking from experience, be careful who you decide to bring into your projects. Sneaky snakey people are out there, to take full advantage of your projects. I’m not saying to have a contract but have a clear layout of what you expect and what they should expect.

Visual Brief
Unique

Portable

Fun & Vibrant
Challenge
I chose a package that had strong branding, so my focal point will be creating another product line. My coffee bags will be smaller than normal ones so that people can take them on the go.
Fitting the main content on smaller packages will be difficult, as well as the right materials. Making sure content is readable for all ages and in all light settings will also be a challenge.
Approach
I created a portable coffee bag by decreasing the size. Since the size is smaller, it allows for creating something more fun. The package takes on a coffee bean shape, which will have an interesting colour or pattern on the sides. The inside will have foil and a seal to ensure freshness.
Outcome
The current mockup is made of Bristol board paper but will be done using regular foil. The size works as a portable package, but not a regular-sized one. The branding will need some work so it’s not too similar to the original and works with the new shape and size.

Blog Post #10
Last blog post of the semester?? Crazy how time flies! EN 211 has been an overall excellent course! I have learned so many different things from rhetorical analysis to the “ICE method.” Throughout the semester I feel that I have stayed very focused and on the ball in this class. I have learned to think a lot deeper about important topics like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, doing so allowed me to understand the world around me a lot better. I am the most proud about my growth as a writer, I feel that at the beginning of the semester I addressed my bad procrastinating habits and I made a 360 degree turn for the best. Not procrastinating, and taking my writing seriously has led to much better results for myself and my grades. I am also very proud of how I have learned to cite all of my sources correctly using MLA format. In EN 111 and in high school I struggled with citing sources and getting them perfect, in this class I was taught the proper way and now they look better then ever! What I could’ve improved on was presenting. I get so nervous presenting, and the first time didn’t go too well. I am excited to hopefully redeem myself this Tuesday and overcome my fear of speaking in front of my peers. The material and techniques I have learned in this course I will take with me for the rest of my educational career. The next steps for my future would have to be simply brushing up on my reading, and working on using the many writing skills I have developed in my papers in future classes. As I stated before, this class has helped me in so many ways and I believe it will help me succeed in my future. I am very grateful to have taken this course. EN 211 will be missed!!

Chapter 8: Negative Messages
Dear Walter,
Good morning. I received your proposal yesterday and I have reviewed it thoroughly. I have looked at your suggestion to switch advertising agencies from ABC Agency to XYZ Agency. I appreciate the input and hard work you’ve provided to the company in the past, however, I believe that in this situation, it would be best for us to stay with our current advertising agency, ABC Agency. ABC Agency has been a valuable contributor to our company’s marketing strategies for the last ten years and they continue to provide great work. They have helped increase the volume of sales on a year to year basis and increased our profits. There is no need for us to discontinue our relations with them as their work has been satisfactory in the time we have done business with them. I would ask you to reconsider your position. While it is true that a smaller agency like XYZ Agency has less clients and can so divert more time to them individually, I believe you’ll find there are a number of other factors that ABC Agency excels in, such as in cost, creativity, technology, and experience to name a few. We will be choosing to stay with ABC Agency for the time being. Thank you nonetheless for your contributions, Walter. You have been a great asset to our team and I do not wish to discourage you from suggesting improvements or ideas, as I do value the research and work you put into our marketing endeavors.
Sincerely, Jeanette Chavez Catalan

Freshman Year Reflection
My freshman year of college had many ups and downs, but overall I would say I had a pretty great year. I remember at one point last semester I was looking at all of my classes I had to take for my major and almost had a mental breakdown because I was so overwhelmed with all of the science classes I would have to take. It was overwhelming because I was looking at a four year schedule plan all at once, when I should have just looked at one semester at a time. I remember calling my mom freaking out because I didn’t think I could do it. Now I know that I can do it, I found out this semester that I actually enjoy chemistry. This was a big surprise to me because I struggled with it in high school and hated it. I am proud that I was able to maintain all A’s and B’s throughout my freshman year of college. Especially with transitioning from high school work to college schoolwork, it is a huge challenge. I have never studied so much in my life compared to the amount that I do right now. I am excited for next semester because I will be taking classes I am more interested in, such as anatomy, two nutrition courses, and Spanish. Those classes will be my next steps to becoming an Applied Nutrition major. This English course has helped me with my time management skills because I don’t procrastinate much with our assignments. I also enjoyed the workshop days because I got to not only help my peers, but myself as well. I’m taking a lot of my prerequisite classes right now, like English and Math so I am not very interested in them but you gotta do what you gotta do. Overall I have loved being at Ohio University and I am not ready to go home for four months.

The Hill

The Hill
Blog Post 10

Joe Shih Architects and Riken Yamamoto & Field Shop, The Hill, Taoyuan, Taiwan, 2018
The concept of the “The Hill” seems strikingly similar to a conceptual theme that we just recently discussed in class. Rem Koolhaas’s design for the French national library had the same idea utilizing sloped ramps to give a sense of continuity throughout the whole building. Even though his design plan was rejected, it clearly has been noted and incorporated into modern architects’ thought pools today. Joe Shih Architects and Riken Yamamoto & Field Shop may have just happened upon this idea themselves, but I would like to believe that they are taking the ideas of a great architect and refining them even further.

Joe Shih Architects and Riken Yamamoto & Field Shop, The Hill, Taoyuan, Taiwan, 2018
The theme for the art gallery is to not only be connected with the outside environment, but for the building to have an open and flowing design. By adding grass and trees along the slopped roof, the gallery is given a sense of life for those inside and outside the building, which will draw visitors who are not art enthusiasts. Also, for the artist that choose to go there to seek inspiration, the open concept will allow their senses to not only experience indoor stimuli, but they will be able to observe their surroundings from inside out as well.

Joe Shih Architects and Riken Yamamoto & Field Shop, The Hill, Taoyuan, Taiwan, 2018
In conclusion, this building is not only an art gallery, it is capable of being a park, office space for display, and more which will lead to many different type of people connecting in one central place sharing new ideas and experiences.

me: *goes into solitude to escape Hurricane Matthew but bring laptop to write blog/ Netflix & Walden*
Lauter, Paul, ed. Heath Anthology of American Literature: Volume a and Volume B. 7th ed. Vol. B. Place of Publication Not Identified: Wadsworth, 2013. Print.I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t relieved to ditch the revolutionary period and dive into the early 19th century. It’s just more my speed. I also like to day dream about Maddie being doted on by young Harvard scholars while listening to Emerson preach about ripples in water. I loved reading about great change in America, only because I associate change with wokeness and alternative ways of thinking, which is exactly what writers like Emerson were employing. Plus, education was more tangible (in the North at least), so people actually had a chance to think for themselves. After reading accounts and narratives that stray towards the depressing side, it was refreshing to glance at Emerson’s optimistic pieces (even though most of America was in a state of economic depression. Must be nice to live in New England).
I think a central theme I noticed throughout the reading was change, on the mass and individual scale. America was going through its own little Renaissance, so obviously social change was taking place. It affected people differently, which is reflected in the texts those specific demographics were writing about. Emerson, a well-off white man, was excited to see what the future held, because for him, America was full of serenity and opportunity. However for Edgar Allen Poe, whose life was haunted by death and despair, change was not as promising. For slaves, change was a means of survival; it meant freedom. Essentially, change was obviously present in the run of the century, but interpreted differently depending upon social status, “man or woman, slave or free, the owner of a mill or one of its ‘hands’, a settler on the ‘virgin lands’ of the West or an Indian defending on those lands the graves of your ancestors” (Lauter 1543). Each account is reflected in and responsible for making up the literature of the time.
Along with change, many writers of the early 19th century sought to comment on social conflict, as a means to provoke change. For example, Henry David Thoreau wrote “Civil Disobedience” to promote his thoughts on the immoralities of slavery. This “moralistic” culture arose, especially in New England, where writers felt their civil duty to create controversial pieces of literature that “move readers to feel and act” (Lauter 1780). This call to action is portrayed heavily in the works we read of Emerson. He, coming from a life of both privilege but was also exposed to the brutalities of life, instills an optimistic and reverent tone in his writing. While sometimes obtuse (see titles of his works), his writing is provocative and challenges the reader.
My favorite quotation from the readings today comes from the chapter called “Language” from Emerson’s Nature. He states that, “every appearance in nature corresponds to some state of the mind, and that state of the mind can only be described by presenting that natural appearance as its picture” (Emerson 1834). This claim made me realize the gravity in which we rely on nature to form language. Emerson goes on to list examples like “a cunning man is a fox”, which is a phrase used commonly. We almost subconsciously find similarities between humanity and nature and basically combine the two. Language is essentially one of nature’s many gifts to us.

ALMOST OVER
Basically the time has come, it is now that time of the semester where you are questioning yourself with “what have I done?”. The time where you just want to finish all your assignments and be free, I can almost taste the freedom. It is funny how sometimes I feel like the semester went by so fast but other times it feels like an eternity ago when I came to my first day of school this semester.
The good thing is that we are one step closer to summer vacations, even if we have summer school, it is only one class, which is good because it is more likely to get a good grade if you are only focusing in one course.
So who has heard of usability testing?, well I didn’t know what it was before going to class. In class we watched two videos, we learned about what it was and how it is used, I like when we watch videos to learn about things, I feel like you just pay more attention to it due to the fact that there are a lot of things to focus on.
Usability testing is something that I will likely use in the future, I am excited to apply things that I learned in class in other courses or projects.

Summer Summer where you at?
It's almost the end of the semester and I feel like I'm way over my head, everything crams and it feels like I won't get anything done this really really sucks! However I know I will get through it and soon enough it'll be summer so I'll be outta here!!!! Lolol who am I kidding I got summer school 😂😂😂😭 anyways this semester although it's been challenging I've found it to be a great semester, one of which I have learned a lot from, and for that I am super happy cause sometimes there's those semesters where you don't learn jack and you just know you passed but don't know how. This semester was been awesomely good to me despite all the work 😂 I hope everyone's semester is as good as mine and if not I hope you keep your head up. But anyways guy they should really do these usability tests on some professors I think it would help a lot. Like if they got usability tests for their lessons and how they teach because if they actually did that I believe a lot of our other professors would change their way of teaching and this would be of great benefice to us the students. Haha but I know this probably won't happen
