Me, weeks ago: I'm just gonna write a straight forward fic where reader/I fuck Astarion since I can't seem to get him to fuck me in the game.

Now: 7k words fic, about half of it is set dressing probably. I would never read this if I came across it on ao3 because I likely wouldn't know ahead of time if it actually pays off or if it's not my thing, but it is exactly my thing since I wrote it.

It's probably also other people's™️ thing I guess so once I'm done I'll get in the ao3 account waitlist I guess, but I refuse to post it unfinished because I don't want to post it in bits and I want people to be able to just skip to the sexy bits if that's what they want.

I think it should be a more common practice when posting "porn with a plot" to tell readers "but if you think the plot can sod off just skip to this part"

Someone on bluesky compared writing your own works to "building a house" and writing fanfic to "throwing a party in someone else's house" and that is what sparked my fanfic post. I get what they were saying, but this elitist attitude towards fanfic is kind of shitty. True, we can't make a profit off of fanfic unless we pull a Stephanie Myers, but it's still writing and still just as valid as making something original. We are taking a pre-existing thing and adding to it, enhancing, evolving. That does take just as much thought and worldbuilding as writing something completely original.

A devastating funny thing happened to me about a year ago:

I recently dug this old BlueSky post of mine up because I had a feeling it had been about a year. Sure enough, I had tried to post through the Final 15.

Btw, this is my cat, Bella, who is a soot sprite disguised as a feline:

As sympathetic as both Bella and my partner were, I could only talk at them about Good Omens for so long. So, I sought out the fandom.

I've been a fan of Good Omens ever since I read the book as a teen but not really gotten into the fandom side until this recent season. From seeking dopamine fixes in Instagram art and reels to fix-it fics on AO3, I eventually stumbled across the Good Omens After Dark sub. I discovered such incredible stories and art and videos - it was a balm to my tattered little soul.

I eventually posted the first piece of fanfic I'd written in years and then got invited to what would become the Whickber Street Writers Association, a separate micro-community. I started actually writing fiction regularly again (and creating very silly memes which people seem to enjoy)

This was such a massive thing for me (the fic, not the memes) as I'd studied an MA in Creative & Critical Writing and it had burnt me the fuck out. Writing brought me no joy. Yet the fandom and the friends I've made in WSWA have helped me rediscover that spark. I'm currently writing the first piece of long-form fic I've ever done, having always only been drawn to writing short stories.

So, cheers to a year of being in the fandom, to getting my heart ripped out, and to the folks who've helped me put it back together 💜
