I hate acid reflux so so so much. "Hey you laid down on your side for too long so we gotta flood your throat with acid now. Sorry." Absolutely horrendous. You are made entirely of flesh tubes and still haven't figured out how to keep them acid-free in three million years? Embarrassing. Inexcusable.

My first graphic memoir about being asian and severely mentally ill is coming out on March 7! You can preorder it everywhere (which is preferred to buying it after it releases bc bookstores are more likely to stock it)
It took me 3-4 years to draw all 350 pages on Procreate (default brushes! Bonobo chalk and Dry Ink) and I’m so excited for everyone to see it
Amazon / Barnes and Noble / Indiebound / Bookshop

what kind of brushes do you use for your digital work?
Hi! Firstly I work Mainly in Procreate so I will just talk about those brushes.
There I use a bit of everything!
So I love the defaults brushes procreate has and use them a LOT. Especially the 6B Sketching pen and the inking dry pen! (Default Chalk brush in Calligraphy and Bonobo Chalk Brush in Sketching as well!) Then for more texture I use a lot of brushes from @maxulichney Gouache and Watercolor Max pack! oh! And I recently too started using some brushes From Olguioo! https://olguioo.carrd.co/ And of course I have a few brushes I made myself that are always good.
But really I recommend playing around with brush sets and packs one at a time. Its easy to get overwhelmed by brushed and what they can do believe me! Start by trying to narrow down what kind of effect you are looking for in your art! Its is for lines? is it texture? is it blending? then you can experiment and find the right brush you need! All in all I use mostly maybe 6 to 10 brushes for 99% of my work. And I have maybe 100 (150?) on my ipad.
Just find the ones that work for you!:)
Hope this helps!

Can you do a coloring tutorial one day? I really like the fuzzyness and whimsy of your style sm I really want a storybook look but idk how to :((
Hi ! This is a tricky one as I tend not to be super consistent with the way I colour. I like to try things out and see what works best for each one of my illustrations :)
However, here are the basics:
First, I sketch the character. I rely on textured brushes a lot so I pick the ones that can give me that “drawn on paper” effect. Big fan of the “Marmo S(Shale)-brush” or anything similar. Next, I colour-block the character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, I’ll add a simple texture within a brush that has a nice pattern. I really like to use “Bonobo Chalk” or any of the vintage brushes you can find on RetroSupply Co.
Tumblr media
The next step is to add simple lighting and shadows and fix some small details. I also like to change the colour of the line art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You're almost done ! Add and erase some lines, play with the colours a little bit more until you're happy and here we are :)
Tumblr media
This is it pretty much ! Just keep it simple, experiment and, most importantly, follow your instincts! Have fun ;)

Hey, just wondering what procreate brushes do you use?💗
For sketching, line art, and rendering I use my brushes from my brush pack! On my gumroad linked in my carrd. The pack is only for procreate right now but is free!
For coloring and textures I like to use Old Beach, Plimsoll (both Artistic category), and Bonobo Chalk (Sketching category)

your art is absolutely FANTASTIC I'm obsessed :0 what art program do you use for drawing. and what brushes? your linear is absolutely delectable thank u for your service 🤌
I make all my digital art using Procreate!
The main brushes I use for lineart are the 6B brush and a slightly modified HB brush (edited by going to the brush properties and changing the maximum size to 10%). Both can be found in the default sketching group
I use the 6B brush for my cleaner illustrations as it has a more crisp look to it but lately I've been using the HB brush for looser, more fluid work. I makes heavy use of the 6B brush as an eraser.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: 6B Pencil, Right: HB Pencil
For coloring I use a variety of things. I use a larger modified 6B brush to fill in flats (I called mine the Big Boy Pencil) Which I got by changing the max size as I did with the HB brush and then going to the Grain tab and changing the Contrast to -15
For softer gradients like my blushes, I use True Grit’s Grain Shaders, Particularly #3 Fixed. If you are looking for a free alternative I suggest the Bonobo Chalk brush in the Sketching brush group of procreate. I also make heavy use of True Grit’s Infinite Pulp series which Is how I get the paper texture in my work!
If you or anyone else has more questions feel free to ask me! my inbox and DMs are always open for questions like these!

sorry if youve been asked this before but your drawings have a nice texture to them and i was wondering if it was a brush or an overlay?
Hello! Thanks for asking, most of the texture in my work comes from brushes. I use the TrueGrit Super Smooth Inker for lineart and the default Procreate Bonobo Chalk brush for coloring and creating gradients.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do use clipping masks to create texture for things like skin. I paint a solid base layer and then add color over top with the Bonobo Chalk brush, fiddling with the opacity until I get my desired look.

Hope this helps!

wow looking at your rat king thing, you improved SO MUCH in the last two years. what did you feel helped you improve?
There’s a handful of things I would say but the main one was switching from a screenless tablet to an iPad!! Obviously iPads are kinda pricey so I can’t recommend it for everyone, but I genuinely feel like switching from a screenless tablet (I used to use Huion) to screened one REALLY helped me get a better grasp of everything, along with procreate just having an easier layout to use compared to the other programs I used (SAI and CSP) which made me less afraid to mess around with brushes and other fun things like halftone textures and chromatic abbreviations, ect ect . Definitely play around with brushes!! While a different brush won’t suddenly make you the Best Artist Ever, finding a brush that works well with your style/art process can help a TON (almost all my brushes are from @/thedawner brush packs, I highly recommend their brushes!! Lots of free packs too, I use the bonobo chalk as my main painting brush)
The other big thing is references!! I rarely used any references until like last year, I’ve been taking my own pose/expression/ect references (yes that means looking at a weird picture of you for like an hour to get the pose right but you get used to it) and going on walks to get nice landscape shots for my work (all my giant ass floating fish drawings are based on images I personally took), but if you don’t wanna do that websites like unsplash, Pexels, and pixabay are great for royalty free (VERY IMPORTANT, I have seen LOTS of artists end up in legal battles because they just used a random photo they got off Google that ended up being copyrighted) pictures and vectors to help get ya started.
The last major big thing is my drawing process in general!! I was hardwired to believe you HAD to do art in the steps of sketch, lineart, color, then shading all on separate layers. Don’t be afraid to use what process works for you! When I threw lineart out the window and started painting all on one layer it became WAY easier for me to block out shapes (highly recommend doing greyscale paint studies, it helps SOO much with more coherent color pallets and lighting) and really helps the entire work fell connected rather than a character that feels poorly overlaid on a separately drawn background.
Don’t be afraid to fuck around! Its art! It’s supposed to be messy and weird! Merge your layers! Use 30 different brushes because you feel like it!! Have fun and mess around with the process and see where it takes you!!!

can i ask what your brushes settings are for your lineart brush on procreate?
sure sure, I put them below the cut! 👇
the grain source is a preset called "bonobo chalk", and the shape is just an oval with some texture… I'm not even sure the texture matters. I'll be honest, I customize most of the brushes I use but I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. I just randomly change the settings until something good happens 😂
EDIT: I uploaded the brush here!

also unrelated to my last post but whoever decided that bonobo chalk should be removed from procreate should be put in that “stuck in an abandoned mall with either a silverback gorilla or 5 black mambas” except both bc i havent been able to find a non useless link to download it again (the links i saw on the procreate forums just led to folders upon folders none of which has bonobo chalk. Admittedly i didnt look too hard but WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO THIS USED TO BE A DEFAULT BRUSH YOU SICK FREAKS!!!)

I absolutely love your art, I'm just wondering what brushes you use?
Thank you very much! I use ProCreate and these are my most commonly used brushes:
6B pencil & HB Pencil for larger areas and details.
Gouache, Bonobo Chalk & Flicks for texture.
(All of these are included in ProCreate's standard brush pack, but with slight alterations by me.)
Hope that was helpful (:

What brushes do you use to paint?
I use procreate and I believe all of my standard brushes (except one) are default! I use:
Tumblr media
Tamar and Gouache brushes for shading. Both have a gorgeous texture but the Gouache blends a bit smoother. That's the one I used the most by far.
For lining, I mostly use the Blotchy brush! If I want the lining to look messier/sketchier, I use the HB or 6B brush! A lot of the times you'll see small etches in my art, those are ALWAYS Peppermint.
I use Gloaming specifically for adding highlights in hair and occasionally to make wispy/smokey little effects
Lastly, my blending brush is Bonobo Chalk however I don't think Bonobo Chalk comes as a default brush anymore. It can be downloaded though! That's what I did! Here's the link if you don't have it default.
I hope this helped!! 🫡

I honestly didn’t realise the community was still going here, so I want to try to be more active!
Here’s a halloween horsie I drew in procreate--I mostly used Max’s gouache brushes, 6B pencil, Bonobo Chalk, and Artist Crayon! Final touch ups in CSP/Photoshop. 💜🎃🐴
