Books of 2023: DISORIENTATION by Elaine Hsieh Chou.
I tend to wait for lit fic in paperback instead of purchasing the hardback, but I've had my eye on this one since the hardback came out. I'm enjoying it so far! The Goodreads reviews are very polarized (people either love it or think it's hugely stupid), but it's easy to read and has made me laugh out loud a couple times (like weaponizing a box of jumbo tampons + toilet for a Heist Cover--this shit is ridiculous, I love it).

About to blow a bloody fuse, when I want a description of a book I want a vague summary of the premise and what the characters are like, something like that, and NOT a list of tropes that give me no actual bearing on if I would enjoy the book or not

keep reading | soobin fic (nsfw)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
nsfw, mdni!
pairings: bf!soobin x bookworm!reader
warnings: smut, fingering, nipple play, boob play, handjob?, riding, nipple sucking, cockwarming, unprotected sex (pls use protection), creampie
summary: soobin loves listening to you read but when he chooses the book you guys read, things take a dirty turn
a/n: this was mostly inspired from a tiktok i saw where a couple was reading the book in this fic together (particularly chapter 22) and to anyone whose read the book, pls let me know in the comments below so we can fangirl together!
Even though Soobin didn’t like the type of books you did, he always made the effort to sit and listen to you read your latest book out loud. But little did you know that his intentions behind this today were far less innocent than you could have imagined.
Whilst on your little bookshop date, you decided to venture outside the world of classic literature and explore “booktok”. The local bookshop presented a display of all the books that are growing in popularity on “TikTok” and Soobin encouraged you to pick a book named “Twisted Love” suggesting the title sounded intriguing.
“Come on read it for me, baby,” Soobin whined, trying to drag you from the kitchen into your bedroom, your usual reading spot.
“What do you think you’re gonna eat for dinner then?”
“You…” he mumbles under his breath but loud enough that you heard it, earning him a slap on his arm.
“I’m nearly done just wait.”
Acquiescing, he sighs and ventures off into the living room, slouching on the sofa.
20 minutes later…
“Soobin, come on let’s eat! I’m starving.”
He makes his way back to the kitchen and grabs a serving of the pasta you made. Before even sitting down at the table, he gobbles down half the food, rushing to finish the meal. You raise suspicion at his behaviour particularly as he’s never this excited for your reading sessions.
Rather than question it, you also finish your meal at a quicker pace than usual. Soobin’s excitement was quite intriguing.
“You finished?” He asks, as you put away your plates and cutlery in the dishwasher.
“Yes I’m done,” you sigh, rolling your eyes at his behaviour.
“Come on, let’s go.” He places an arm around your waist and guided you to your shared bedroom.
He sprawls across the double bed whilst you grab the book from the shopping bag and you slot yourself in between Soobin’s legs using his chest as a back rest.
“Ok, let’s begin shall we?” You ask getting your answer through the form of a back hug as his arms sliver around your waist and places his chin on your shoulder, encapsulating you in his body.
Usually, your reading sessions last from anywhere between 30 minutes to 1 hour, yet today you’ve been reading at it continuously for 3 hours, unable to put it down. You comment on the characters’ stupidity and question plot holes whilst Soobin simply nods his head and agrees with you. He seemed more distracted than usual: his thoughts were elsewhere.
“Chapter 22…” you begin. Soobin’s grip around you, suddenly gets tighter, pulling you closer to his body. You could guess from where the plot was going that this chapter was going to contain some sort of smut and honestly you expected it.
“Is this why you picked out this book, Soobin? You knew about this scene didn’t you? That’s why you were so excited!”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about baby,” he replies, acting clueless but the tone of his voice was an instant giveaway of his fibs, “Keep reading.”
The chapter instantly starts off intense and each word that comes out your mouth sounds seductive to Soobin. It’s as if you were beckoning him to ruin you tonight. Each sentence is hotter and dirtier than the last and before you even reached the 6th sentence, you could feel Soobin’s lips attach to your nape, kissing and sucking at your skin. His mouth lowers to your shoulders, leaving a trail of bruised red marks. The sensation of his lips on your skin sets a wildfire in the pits of your stomach and you instantly shut the book and your eyes.
“I want you to keep reading babe,” he whispers in your ear, “Keep reading.”
You open the page back up again at chapter 22 and continue reading from where you left and and every so often letting out a suppressed moan at the contact between the two of you. He proceeds on removing your top from behind and slides down your baggy pyjama bottoms with ease. His movements matched the scene of the book where Ava, the female protagonist, was now stripped naked of her clothing.
As if on cue, Soobin’s dick stands erect just as the male character Alex’s does. You feel his hardness through his grey joggers on your naked ass and you begin rubbing yourself against him.
“You want me to take you, Sunshine? Ruin you, pound you into a pathetic mess, turn you into my little fuck doll?” You read out loud, feeling Soobin’s hands move from your waist in opposite directions: one head up to grab one of your breasts, while the other rubs your pussy. You arch your back, leaving your head into the nape of his neck, leaving breathy moans right under his ear.
“You like that, baby? Want me to ruin you just as Alex is going to do with Ava?”
“Mhm- ahhh,” you shriek as suddenly you feel 3 fingers inserted into your entrance.
The hand that was on your boob, travels into your mouth, gathering your spit before moving down to meet the other hand at your pussy. Soobin rubs his thumb on your clit whilst fingering you deep and rough, leaving you feeling overpowered by the sensations you were feeling.
It’s not long before you throw the book into some corner of the room and turn your body to face him, removing yourself of his fingers. You pull up his tshirt, teasing him by scraping past his nipples, making him let out a soft grunt. You work your way down to his joggers which were stained with precum, and pull them down in one swift movement revealing his cock. It was long with an average girth but the way he used it on you was like nothing you’ve ever felt before.
You pump your fists up and down his member before lifting yourself up and sitting down on it. You ease yourself into position as his hands move up to your waist, securing you tightly. Your movements begin slow, adjusting yourself to his size, because no matter how many times you guys fuck your hole is always too tight, even as it oozes with slick and wetness.
You eventually pick up the pace, your tits bouncing uk and down in front of his face, your nipples grazing it every so often. Soobin guides you well pushing his cock in deep into your pussy, hitting all the right spots.
“You’re taking me so well baby. Fuck you’re so good!” He mutters, his grunts mixing with your whimpers and moans.
“Soo- Soobin! I don’t thi- think I can- last a- any longer! Shit! That was- so good!” Your slewed words were a melody to Soobin’s ears.
He quickens his pace as you’re left riding him so fast you can’t even think. His mouth suddenly latches onto one of your nipples as he begins sucking and licking your tit.
“Agh! Soobin that feels so good! Do the other one!” You manage to say in between your moans.
Soobin follows your instructs and moves to your other breast, repeating the same actions.
“I’m gonna cum! Soobin keep going! I’m so close!”
“Look at you. So desperate for my cock? Cum with me baby.”
Not even seconds later, your orgasm comes crashing, letting out the louadest scream. Your mind is numb as you fall onto Soobin’s chest, grabbing his shoulders for support as he continues to ride both your orgasms. His cum mixes with yours, leaking out your pussy while you remain seated on his dick, cockwarming him.
“Stay like this for a bit more babe.” Soobin wraps his arms around your waist, hugging you and pulling your naked body closer to his, “You did so well. Let’s get you cleaned up shall we?”
“No, please let’s just stay like this tonight.”
“Anything for you baby.”
Soobin lies you down next to him without removing his cock from your pussy. He’s now spooning you form behind and you both instantly fall asleep, tangled up in each others naked forms.

If there's one take-away I want to make clear about ruining your career by pettily review-bombing other writers, it's that traditional publishing is not a competition you can win. You have no control over how well your sales do versus someone else's sales. No amount self-promotion, hard work, and social media is going to guarantee a viral tweet, a Booktok sensation, or rave reviews. Those are beyond your control.
In this, your fellow authors are not your rivals, but your peers. If you are not super rich or well-connected, you will be reliant on connections you have to communities that know and trust you, and this is far more important than anything you do on your own. The publishing world is quite small, and these relationships will be a boon in building your future opportunities as well as helping other writers. The industry, in fact, relies on selling books with similar themes at the same time, because they know readers who like one Greek-inspired fantasy will likely pick up another one. That's how publishing trends work!
Publishing is never going to be free from drama or interpersonal-driven conflict. Review-bombing is going to continue, driven by political or ideological agendas. But treating what should be a professional career as some sort of winner-takes-all Squid Game is going to blow up in your face the moment you're caught out, and it will ruin your career before it even begins.

Worried About Traction/Why Write?
Anonymous asked: Okay answer me this, so I've read how trad publishing is going to shit, but self-publishing I doubt I could gain any traction with. Then why fucking write, ya know? People say, "write for yourself," which sounds like a lot of goody bullshit. I want people to love my writing, I need some type of validation. So, how the hell do I get anyone to care about my stories?
Just a quick note that this ask came in off Anon, and I wasn't sure if it was meant to, so I put I'm posting it Anon to be on the safe side.
So, I don't want to get too much into the "is traditional publishing dying" debacle, because it's a conversation that's complex and nuanced and outside of my energy reserves at the moment. What I will say is that the traditional publishers--the Big Five in particular--still dominate the market, especially where print books are concerned. And although self-publishing can respond more quickly to trends and shifting tastes, traditional publishing continues to evolve.
Having said that, even if traditional publishing was stronger than ever before, that wouldn't guarantee you a book deal. Even in the best of times, the odds of being traditionally published are between 1 and 2%. Even if you get a book deal, that doesn't guarantee your book will be a best-seller. Hundreds of thousands of books are traditionally published every year, and far fewer than 1% of those books will become best sellers. Being traditionally published doesn't even guarantee your book will be sold in brick and mortar bookstores. I can point you toward traditionally published books that have been out almost a year and still have fewer than 10 reviews on Amazon. I can point you toward many more with fewer than 30.
And, while we're on the subject, I can show you self-published books with thousands of reviews (positive ones, btw...)
The point is, it doesn't really matter how you publish. What you write, how you write, and how you market is far, far more important. But the reality is, most of us aren't writing the kinds of books that are going to be best-sellers, BookTok sensations, Oprah's Book Club selections, or get optioned for film rights before the ink on the book deal is even dry. So, when you say you need validation, what does that look like for you? Does it mean seeing your name at the top of the NYT best seller list for five weeks straight? Seeing your book on eye-level shelves at an international airport? Hundreds of fans showing up to your book signing? A-hundred thousand followers on Twitter eagerly awaiting news of your next release? Or, does it look like someone... anyone... enjoying your book enough to leave a 5-star review... someone calling you their favorite writer, several fans re-posting your cover reveal because they're so excited for your upcoming book, or someone writing to say your book got them through a difficult time in their lives? Because, while I would never tell you not to dare to dream of achieving the former list of expectations, I will absolutely tell you the latter list of expectations is well within your grasp. So, if that's validation enough for you, write for those people. If it isn't, and it's not enough to write for yourself, then I think all you can do is try. Write the best stories you can write. Get them out there. Promote the hell out of them and see what happens. Maybe you will be one of those lucky few who see their book at the top of the NYT best seller list for five weeks in a row. Or, maybe you won't, but you get a two-page e-mail from a fan who says your story changed their life. And maybe, after all, that's enough. Here are some posts that can help you start building a following ahead of publishing, whatever route you end up choosing. Building a buzz on social media ahead of publishing and consistent promotion afterward can make a big difference. Even if you publish traditionally. ♥️ love train! send this to all the blogs you love! don’t forget to spread the love! ♥️
You ever have a Tumblr writer/artist that just gives you the most heart wrenching, mind altering, soul crushing pieces of writing/artwork? And they do it for free? Then you think to yourself what did I do in my life to deserve such a gift. Like what could have I possibly have done to deserve such a blessing.
You are the absolute embodiment of that and I say that with my whole soul. It boggles my mind that you do this for free when I have my wallet ready to empty in your lap. (I can't find your Kofi 😭 please link it, please take my money!)
I've been reading books since I was young and never had a book touch my soul like your writing has. My mind returns to it at odd time of the day and it shatters me all over again. It's so well written, I can picture every scene so well that it plays like a film in my mind. No story has done what you could. Sometimes I struggle so hard trying to conceptualize a scene when reading. But that is never a problem with your writing. It's so seamless like a movie playing in my mind.
You don't understand that amount of times I've had to stop midway just to collect myself, just to calm the heart pounding in my chest. Just so I could organise the intense feelings your writing invoked in me. I think it's because you write so well that emotions and visuals are so intense that I have to take breaks to comprehend it fully. Sometimes I feel like it's just my brain lagging because my mind it isn't on the level on your writing.
I just wanted to let you know if you ever decide (I pray to god you do!) to become a published author (the world needs to know about your writing please!) I would be a super fan buying all the special editions of your books and even buying extra to gift to people so they could also experience the life altering joy of your writing.
My heart hurts that not enough people know about you. My heart cries that such a diamond of person, such a talented artist isn't receiving due diligence for their immense talent.
You could write movie scripts. Your books could become world wide sensations! And I'd love to see that happen. I'd even start a whole ass booktok page to speed awareness. I want you to succeed so badly my heart hurts. It hurts that not enough people know about you. I'm sorry if this comes across as intense I just wanted you to know how much I love your writing. And hope I appreciate what you do
i am a wreck over this, tbh. unrecoverable. shattered. i thought it was going to be one of those cute little "send this to the ten best blogs you know" chains that i sometimes see, and i was excited to get it but then i kept reading and it felt like a punch to the gut. but in the best way, of course. like the rush after dropping on a rollercoaster. or standing at the edge of a cliff and looking down at the valley below.
i'm incredibly honoured you feel and think so highly of my writing. it's sort of mind-boggling to me that it makes you feel this way at all. like, i'm just Some Guy 😭 i really don't deserve this level of praise. nothing i do is really grand in any way. i write on my phone, and usually when i'm sitting in my car after a hike or a run, snacking on comfort food, and just hanging out. nothing about this is really special, you know? but the fact that you connect with it at all is amazing to me.
and i really don't have any plans of publishing. tbh, the world of Published Authors makes me incredibly nervous, and i genuinely hate English grammar to the point where i know i'd be an absolute nightmare for any editor to deal with lmao i like the way i write and have no plans on changing it to cater to language rules. it's a hobby which i enjoy immensely but my true career passion lies elsewhere. but i'm bawling my eyes out that you even think it's good enough for that!!! ahhhhh!!!!! 🖤

Book Blurb:
From the author of the BookTok sensation Win Lose Kill Die, comes an explosive mystery about a teenager whose true-crime obsession hits a little too close to home when she begins receiving cryptic messages after moving into a new house. "Deliciously twisted fun!"—Karen M. McManus, #1 New York Times bestselling author of One of Us Is Lying
When true-Crime obsessed Paige, along with her family, move across the Atlantic to her father's eerie hometown, it's not long before she uncovers the town's dark history—a string of unsolved murders and disappearances in the 90s.
Soon after, notes start appearing at their home, about the secrets the old house is keeping. The clues lead Paige to a diary concealed in the walls that belonged to one of the missing girls.
Could this be the key to solving a quarter-of-a-century mystery...or will the diary make Paige the next target?
Review:
A mixture of true crime with The Watcher, the story follows a teen girl who moves into a new home only to find that it has a bloody past and that mysterious letters keep arriving for her. Paige loves true crime and has just moved from the UK to the US. She's moved into her father's creepy hometown with a dark bloody history, and in particular her own new house is connected to a string of unsolved murders and disappearances in the 90s. When she begins receiving creepy letters, Paige then finds a diary in the walls of her home that belonged to one of the missing girls... it could be the key to solving one of the unsolved mysteries or be the reason Paige becomes the next target. This book just felt a bit shallow to me, I wasn't at all hooked by the mystery and having actually seen and read so many other similar stories that used the "The Watcher" storyline it just kind of felt meh overall. I was hoping I would like this one but it just felt a bit too juvenile to me and while it was a miss for me I do think maybe other young adult readers will enjoy this mystery.
Release Date: September 24,2024
