#MusicMonday Review - July 2022

#MusicMonday is the hashtag I've been using for quite a while to share music recommendations from up-and-coming artists. Always fresh, and always different, trying to look for trends before they become one. You can check June's review for more music.

Summer is in full swing, and, for this month's selection, I'll let you feast on a great sample of the current UK music scene, with a touch of Canadian Country at the end. Let's have a listen, with a word from the artists themselves. 🎧

Ocean Velvets – I'll Be There

And oh I need you home, things aren’t always like this, don’t get better like this Cause I know that we can try, to find another way, to make it okay.

From West Lothian, Scotland, Indie Rock is well represented with a track about offering support to someone that may be having a hard time, but, is it enough? Only time will tell:

"The track came about through a few experiences put into one, kind of relates to someone who’s kind of lost their way a bit and just needs some reassurance, two people on different chapters of their lives but want to start a new one together."

THAT'S THE LAST TIME I'LL TAKE ANYTHING FOR GRANTED, HERE'S THE FUTURE NOTHING'S LEFT FOR US.

A system way beyond repair, society battered and broken, the ship's sinking, and it's a long way down. Yep, this Punk Rock band from Chepstow, South Wales, tells it like it is:

"The influence behind the lyrics was the first lockdown when Covid hit. We were all stuck indoors and glued to the TV news to see what happened next.

We were putting all our trust in a government that was run by absolute b*llends and it felt like the beginning of the end.

The whole world was at a standstill, the lyrics happened really quickly."

"All of our music is written as a collective and we really wanted a flourescent adolescent type feel with the song as were heavily influenced by 00s garage rock, but lyrically the song was written by one of the members solely, it was written about the feeling of always being a shoulder to cry on especially for people in relationship problems, when knowing in your head that you could solve these problems yourself but knowing that you’ll never be chosen, which isn’t personal to any of us (i don’t think) but we’ve seen happen with close friends of the band which was the inspiration."

"So this idea, funny enough, did come from a specific experience.

My co-writer Kris went on a repair job and the guy took him out to his garage to the fridge, and the guy in a very serious tone was like “man, you gotta get this fixed, this is my beer fridge.”

Kris brought the idea to a write we had scheduled and as soon as he said it I was in. Have one myself, one of my ex-girlfriend’s dad had a great garage set up, buddies of mine do. Had all the material we needed haha"

MaNo-Festival 2020: Maximal Multi-Kulti!

MaNo Festival 2020: Phantom Isle kommen aus der Partnerstadt Northampton! (Marburg) Jedes Jahr im März findet in Marburg an der Lahn das MaNo-Festival statt. Die dreitägige Veranstaltung ist in den fünfundzwanzig Jahren ihres Bestehens zu einem Klassiker der lokalen Musikszene avanciert, die ihren festen Platz in der Kulturlandschaft der Universitätsstadt hat. Das Festival wird ehrenamtlich von einer Gruppe musikliebender MarburgerInnen organisiert. Frei nach dem Motto „Raus aus den Proberäumen, rauf auf die Bühne“ geben die Veranstalter Bands aus Marburg und der nächsten Umgebung die Möglichkeit, sich live zu präsentieren, dabei neue Zuhörer zu finden und Kontakte zu anderen Bands zu knüpfen.

Jack vs Hotdog Dieser Blick über den sprichwörtlichen Tellerrand ist gerade für Bands interessant, die im Rahmen des MaNo-Festivals zum ersten Mal auftreten: Oft finden sich dort neue Spielgemeinschaften für die Zukunft zusammen. Gleichzeitig werden alle Bands zur eigenen Mitarbeit bei den Vorbereitungen des Festivals angeregt. So können sie nicht nur mitgestalten und -entscheiden, sondern auch zum Fortbestehen des MaNo beitragen.

Tomesalo Die Idee des ehrenamtlichen und nicht-profitorientierten Engagements zeigt sich des Weiteren in der Tatsache, dass alle Bands und Organisatoren auf Gage verzichten. Den Marburgern soll mit dem Festival einen Eindruck von der Vielfalt ihrer Musikszene vermittelt werden und ihnen dabei ein unterhaltsames, abwechslungsreiches Wochenende geboten werden. Marburg und seine Partnerstädte Nicht nur der lokale Partnerschaftsgedanke ist ein Motivationsfaktor für die Veranstalter des MaNo-Festival 2020. Den Kontakt zu den Partnerstädten zu pflegen und die Städtepartnerschaften ins öffentliche Bewusstsein zu rücken ist nach wie vor ein zentraler Gedanke des Festivals. Schließlich lässt sich bereits am Namen ablesen, dass das MaNo-Festival ursprünglich von Musikern aus Marburg und Northampton ins Leben gerufen wurde. Mittlerweile sind aber auch Bands aus Marburgs anderen Partnerstädten Poitiers (Frankreich), Maribor (Slowenien), Eisenach, Sibiu (Rumänien) und Sfax (Tunesien) regelmäßig mit von der Partie.

Die Gäste werden alle privat untergebracht und während des ganzen Festivalwochenendes von einem persönlichen „Bandguide“ begleitet. So entsteht für sie die Möglichkeit, nicht nur den musikalischen, sondern auch andere kulturelle Aspekte Marburgs kennenzulernen, bevor es abends auf die Bühne geht. Private Kontakte und musikalische Freundschaften, die am Festivalwochenende entstehen, vertiefen die Partnerschaft der Städte - und haben mit der Vic Suhr Band, die aus Musikern aus Northampton und Marburg besteht, bereits seit Jahren eine Vorzeigegruppe geschaffen.

Cavalo Jedes Jahr spielen Marburger Bands - vor allem solche, die sich durch besonderes Engagement beim MaNo ausgezeichnet haben - auf den Partnerfestivals „Twinfest“ in Northampton und „Les Expressifs“ in Poitiers. Der Aufbau und die Etablierung eines dauerhaften musikalischen Austauschs mit den anderen Partnerstädten, zu dem auch regelmäßige Konzerte Marburger Bands in diesen gehören, ist ein langfristiges Ziel, an dem man weiterhin arbeitet. MaNo-Festival 2020: Der Ablauf Das MaNo-Festival 2020 findet vom 05. bis 07. März statt. Donnerstag: Eröffnungsabend Der Startschuss fällt am Donnerstag um 17:30 Uhr in der Waggonhalle. Es treten alle Gastbands aus den Partnerstädten auf. Der Eintritt beträgt 3,- €. Info-Material über die einzelnen Bands gibt es auf der MaNo-Webseite und beim Pressekontakt (siehe unten). Freitag/Samstag: Clubs Freitag- und Samstagabend spielen 75 Marburger Bands in insgesamt 15 Marburger Clubs und Kneipen (12 am Freitag, 13 am Samstag, wobei manche Clubs nur an einem Abend bespielt werden). In jedem Club spielen zusätzlich 1-2 der oben genannten Gastbands aus den Partnerstädten. Der Tagespass („Armbändchen“), mit dem man am jeweiligen Abend Zutritt zu allen teilnehmenden Clubs erhält, kostet 5,- €. Er kann an den MaNo-Abenden vor Ort in den teilnehmenden Clubs / Kneipen erworben werden. Einen Vorverkauf gibt es nicht. Musik Das Publikum erwartet ein breites musikalisches Spektrum. Zur Orientierung finden sich auf dem Programmflyer, der an vielen Orten in Marburg ausliegt und auf www.mano-festival.de zum Download bereit steht, neben den Namen der Bands und Solokünstler auch ihre selbstgewählten Stilbezeichnungen. Kurzfristige Programmänderungen (Ausfall bzw. Ersatz von Bands) werden ebenfalls auf der Webseite bekannt gegeben und können per QR-Code mit dem Smartphone abgefragt werden. Der Eröffnungsabend in der Waggonhalle bietet die Möglichkeit, alle Künstler aus den Partnerstädten an einem Abend und auf einer Bühne zu erleben.
