Rigging ...
Total embarrassment for North End after a shocker of a defeat, 0-3, away at Southampton. North End were three down in thirty three minutes and at that point our record league defeat of 0-7 looked in great danger. It needs to be said at the outset that Southampton are a very good side and are in a rich vein of form but the application, or lack of it, shown by North End was spine chilling for the 556 fans inside St Marys and the many thousands watching on Television. Seldom, in recent years, have I seen North End so over-run as they were in that haunting opening half hour on the South coast as we looked like a team that had never played together before. Im not sure what homework was done on the Saints before the game by North End but it was woefully lacking as we were humiliated, again, in front of the nation.
North End made two changes to the side that lost to Norwich City on Saturday with Emil Riis and Noah Mawene coming in for Will Keane and Alan Browne. Right from the kick off the home side were on top and had three good chances in the first twelve minutes. North End had their one shot on target via Frokjaer but it was only a matter of time before the Onion bag started rattling and so it proved to be. Che Adams fired the Saints into the lead after being left unmarked in the box with two North End players ball watching. Woodman was almost caught out from 35 yards with the ball just going over the bar but the Saints doubled their lead just before the half hour. Adams and Brooks combined and Adams scored easily courtesy of some woeful defending. Four minutes later it was 0-3 when a poor Holmes clearance fell to Armstrong and he beat Woodman easily as the North End fans cringed at what was happening in front of their eyes. Lowe replaced Holmes with Cunningham before half time and this, combined with Southampton having a breather, saw us reach the break without further damage.
Will Keane replaced Emil Riis at the break as North End looked to stop the bleeding and to try and make some impact on the game. Alas the second half didn`t really pan out that way although no more goals were conceded this was more due to Southampton treating the game like a training session. For Ryan Lowe to say that was much more North End in the second half than in the first is frankly laughable given the home sides approach. Adams had a good early chance but his effort was blocked by Mawene while at the other end a very rare Preston attack saw Frokjaer cut the ball back only to find three defenders waiting, The Saints had two more decent chances, which Woodman did really well to save, before the referee mercifully blew for full time and put an end to another Ryan Lowe horror night on the road.
The only mitigation I could offer is that the result could have possibly been different if the game had been played on the original date but that is pure guess work. I`m sure people do not need reminding that the last five games of last season yielded just one point and with QPR and West Brom away to come plus a final home game against Leicester there was real concern amongst the fans at St Marys that North End may well finish the season with five straight defeats. Of course that is just speculation and we must still take one game at a time. However I think it is a very big game for the manager on Saturday in West London and if he thinks the season is over and he can just serenely sail into next term then the fans may well make him think again. This was poor on the pitch and poor off it with the way some of the staff were thrown under the bus. Praise in public and chastise in private is a leadership behaviour that will serve you well in any walk of life.

The Minnesota Twins bats have been red hot to start the second half, but the pitching has slumped a bit. The team looked for the series win on a hot day at Target Field this afternoon. The Mariners struck first in the first inning as Julio Rodriguez led-off with a double to right. Teoscar Hernandez singled him home and Seattle had the lead before Minnesota grabbed a bat. The Mariners got back to work in the second as Dylan Moore smoked a Joe Ryan fastball out to left for a solo homer. Julio Rodriguez added a solo blast in the third and the Mariners had a three-run lead. The Twins would find some offense in the bottom of the third when Christian Vazquez knocked a Bryce Miller fastball out to left for a solo homer. Later in the inning, Eddie Julien lined a slider out to left and the Twins were within a run after three frames. The Mariners bounced back as Tom Murphy started the fourth with a double and Cade Marlowe walked. Dylan Moore singled and Kolten Wong plated a run with a base hit to right. Seattle had a 4-2 lead that didn’t last long. Matt Wallner drilled a Bryce Miiller fastball out to right for a solo homer as the Twins inched within a run. The Mariners continued to hit in the fifth as Ty France and Cade Marlowe walked. Dylan Moore belted a Jordan Balazovic offering out to left for a three-run homer and the Mariners led 7-3. Seattle added one more run in the sixth as Julio Rodriguez doubled and Eugenio Suarez singled to right. The M’s had an 8-3 lead, but the Twins would not give up. Matt Wallner knocked a Bryce Miller slider out to left for a solo homer. Trevor Larnach doubled and Kyle Farmer singled him in. Joey Gallo doubled home a run and Christian Vazquez hit a run-scoring single to right. The Twins got within a run after six innings of play. The bullpens settled down and the Twins had a chance in the ninth. Christian Vazquez led-off with a single and pinch-runner Michael Taylor eached second base. Andres Munoz retired the final three batters to end the game and the Mariners took the series today.
-Final Thoughts- Joe Ryan didn’t have his best stuff today and it showed. He lasted 3 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Jordan Balazovic gave up three runs over 1 1/3 innings and Josh Winder saved the bullpen with four strikeouts over four innings. Christian Vazquez led the way with three hits on the day. Matt Wallner, Trevor Larnach, and Kyle Farmer had two hits each. The Twins hit 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. The Twins have tomorrow off before heading to Kansas City for a weekend series. Sonny Gray faces Brady Singer in Game 1 on Friday night.
“Hey, Matt, can you come here for a second?” Matt looked up from his phone with a confused look on his face. He got up from the love seat and walked towards the bigger couch where Brady was sitting. Brady pulled him down onto his lap and Matt stumbled onto him.
“What the hell are you doing Brades?” Matt hissed into his ear. Dylan and Ryan had both looked up from their devices with curious looks on their faces.
Dylan spoke up “Is Matt small again?”
“Nope, Matt is perfectly big” Brady said and then he put his hand on the back of Matt’s neck, leaned towards him and kissed him on the mouth.

Movie Reviews:
John Chard: Good guys are real good, and the bad guys are real bad.
Patriot Games is a more than serviceable thriller, perhaps a bit out of date when viewing it now, but still a very effective good against evil piece.
The source material is so dense and intricate it was always going to be hard to condense that into a 2 hour movie, but I feel the makers manage to keep it fleshy whilst making the respective characters interesting and watchable.
The acting on show is more than adequate, Harrison Ford is great in the role of Jack Ryan, he manages to portray him as a sensitive family man who can step up to the plate when things get ugly, and Anne Archer is solid enough as the wife and mother caught up in the web of nastiness unfolding.
The baddies are led by the brooding Sean Bean who is a little under written, whilst Richard Harris is sadly underused. However, the action set pieces make their mark and thankfully we get a riveting...
Keep right on to the end of the road is an anthem strongly associated with Birmingham City, but for those who know their North End history they will know that it was a song sung by North End fans in the pre-war years. Well on Tuesday evening North End certainly kept right on with win number six on the trot, this time against the Blues, and a win which keeps us at the top of the Championship. After a fairly mundane first half, with each side only having one shot on goal, North End found themselves behind after just thirty seconds of the second half when the impressive Stansfield put Birmingham ahead. However we were not behind for long and within four minutes an own goal had put us level. Midway through the half Osmajic smashed home the winner and North End were on their way to another three points with with a fourth successive home win.
Ryan Lowe made one change from the side that beat Plymouth Argyle at home on Saturday and that was Jack Whatmough coming in for Andrew Hughes. North End stuck to the 3-4-2-1 which has served us well so far this season. The game started fairly tamely but it was the visitors who had the majority of play early on. North End looked comfortable in defence and started to move up a gear at the mid point period. McCann had a shot blocked but then Potts missed the best chance of the game when firing wide after being put clear in the inside right position. Woodman was called into action to save Birmingham's only shot on target in the first half. A scramble in the away goal just before the break came to nothing and the team went into the interval level after an even, if mediocre, first half.
No changes for North End after half time but inside a minute North End were behind when Stansfield was put through and he fired home past Woodman to give the visitors the lead much to the delight of the 1,909 travelling fans. The lead wasnt to last long though and within five minutes North End were level when an Alan Browne's corner was whipped in from the right hand side and Bielik headed into his own net after trying to clear the ball. It was the lift North End needed and we then started to dominate the game leading to the winning goal half way through the second period. Browne picked up the ball in midfield and went on a powerful run eventually playing in Osmajic in the inside right channel and the Montenegrin made no mistake smashing the ball home through the legs of Ruddy in the visitors goal. Deepdale erupted and not long after Holmes then had a dipping shot saved by Ruddy. Mr Whitestone decided there were nine minutes to add on but North End held out to a faltering Birmingham and claimed the points that keep us top of the division.
So six wins on the bounce and the other twenty three teams all looking up at us in the Championship table. Lets not kid ourselves, though, this was not North Ends best performance of the season by a long chalk but if you can win with a six and half out of ten performance then it must say something for the character and the resilience in this squad. There will be tough days ahead as a glimpse at the October fixture reminds us but for me it is all about collecting points at this stage of the season and nineteen points from seven games is some return for a side the bookies thought might be involved in the bottom half of the table. Taking one game at a time is the oldest and wisest cliche in football but you cant help thinking that a win at Rotherham on Saturday followed by the same against West Brom at Deepdale and North End would be half way to safety before September is out.
