Bachelin Auguste - L'Horlogerie neuchâteloise

Bachelin Auguste - L'Horlogerie neuchâteloise: Voici un petit ouvrage, paru en 1888 à l’occasion de l’inauguration du monument de Daniel JeanRichard au Locle, qui retrace l’histoire de l’horlogerie dans le canton de Neuchâtel. Depuis ce pionnier, des hommes de génie conçurent des montres, des horloges, des automates dans de petits ateliers. Certains se développèrent engageant des ouvriers. Il leur fallut concevoir aussi les outils pour parvenir à usiner des rouages minuscules, des ressorts microscopiques. Et souvent la notoriété est au rendez-vous, plusieurs de ces pièces ont été achetées ou offertes aux monarques de l’époque, à Paris, à la cour d’Espagne, à des rajah indiens, au tsar en Russie. Ce savoir-faire croise la route d’autres inventions majeures de l’époque: l’électricité, la télégraphie entre autres. À l’élaboration technique, et à la recherche de la précision, ces hommes allièrent l’esthétisme, et décorèrent avec force gravures et émaillage des œuvres d’une grande beauté. L’ouvrage s’interroge aussi sur les maladies professionnelles (l’intoxication au mercure) et décrit les moyens mis en œuvre pour y pallier. Depuis Daniel JeanRichard qui construisit en 1681 une première montre d’après un modèle rapporté de Londres, on compte 466 ouvriers 10 ans après sa mort; en 1780: 4000, et en 1866:13000! C’est dire l’essor de cette industrie dans le canton. Des noms prestigieux comme Jaquet-Droz et ses automates, Breguet, Perrelet qui a inventé de nombreux outils et des machines pour parfaire les techniques, Houriet, Ducommun et sa planisphère. L’ornementation des montres, des cadrans en émail, tout est à inventer et les paysans de ces vallées reculées et leurs femmes, qui sont habituées à faire de la dentelle, se mettent à l’ouvrage tout l’hiver pour parfaire leurs connaissances de la technique horlogère. Ces montres ont été exposées dans différentes expositions nationales (Paris, Londres, où sur 53 exposants 27 sont neuchâtelois, à Vienne, La Chaux-de-Fonds), puis seront colportées dans toute l’Europe, en Asie jusqu’en Chine et au Japon puis en Amérique. Les écoles d’horlogerie prospèrent aussi à Neuchâtel, au Locle, à Fleurier, et des musées, compléments naturels des écoles, s’ouvrent dans ces mêmes villes et resteront des hauts-lieux de l’horlogerie, malgré la crise qui frappa cette région au 20e siècle. Un rappel de l’esprit pionnier de ces régions. «Fils d’un menuisier neuchâtelois, Auguste Bachelin commence sa formation artistique chez Louis Wallingre à Saint-Blaise en compagnie d’Albert Anker notamment. En 1850, il quitte Neuchâtel pour Paris, où il restera jusqu’en 1874, mais séjournant souvent et toujours plus longtemps à Neuchâtel. D’abord admis dans l’atelier de Charles Gleyre, il entre en 1852 dans celui de Thomas Couture, qui exercera une influence décisive sur son œuvre: il passe, dit-il, «de l’école du dessin à celle de la couleur». Le coup d’État monarchiste de 1856 à Neuchâtel, qui s’affranchit ainsi de la tutelle prussienne, semble être à l’origine de sa vocation de peintre militaire. Marié en 1874, il quitte Paris et s’installe à Marin, où ses activités se diversifient. Romancier, chroniqueur, homme public très populaire à Neuchâtel, il fonde la Société d’histoire de Neuchâtel, écrit assidûment dans la revue du Musée neuchâtelois (plus de 200 articles en 25 ans) et contribue au succès de la collection du Musée d’art et d’histoire de Neuchâtel, fondée en 1868. Pouzait is considered the pioneer of the tick-tock movement of the second hand, known as the Jump Second, or Seconde Morte in French, which is found in most watch stores nowadays.
