For 10SNE1, Lars Fisk’s exhibition at Broadway Gallery in NYC, he has created an immersive environment that is really fun to walk around in or even try playing in.
From the gallery’s press release-
Whatever isolation people experienced during the 2020 pandemic lockdown was, to residents of the remote enclave of Red Hook Brooklyn, both compounded and barely noticed at all.  Lars Fisk, who lives and works there in a stacked shipping container house and an adjacent studio, mostly carried on with his solitary practice fashioning astonishingly complex sculptures from glass, steel, brick and wood.  Apart from the occasional neighborly drop-in, he saw very few people.
As a result, when New York emerged from the fearful slumber of Covid, Fisk himself blossomed in late spring with a hunger for human connection. As luck would have it, he was invited by a Red Hook neighbor to join their softball league. Fisk had never really played before, but took a chance and shook off the isolation to give it a shot. He has described the profound uplift of multi-generational camaraderie and shared purpose; of competition and physical exertion in almost euphoric terms.
As summer wound down, Fisk was determined to find a way to perpetuate this endorphin rush. Simultaneously, he had also been playing tennis with some regularity, and, as is his inclination, had been researching the history of the game. He was delighted to discover that the game (known first as Court Tennis) originated in the Middle Ages with opponents paddling a cord-wound leather ball back and forth off of the sloping roofs of the stalls at the close of the public market—a version of what many a contemporary suburban kid would recall as a game of “Roofball”.
This gave Fisk the idea of creating a winter-ready racquet sport inside his studio. This portion of his workspace had been set aside for formal display of works that were complete but hadn’t yet been shipped out for exhibition—a place to present works to his now close-knit Red Hook community in an in-crowd acknowledgement of the locals’ contribution to his work and happiness. Therefore, this site (a White Cube with an absurdist twist of the traditional wattle and daub and timbering of Tudor architecture) became the obvious location for the court. Here, any neighbor or visiting friend that came to play and help develop the rules of this makeshift new sport became de facto performers—became the artwork that this space was designated to display. A low net was set up and a loose set of rules were developed to keep the play lively and competitive. Fisk experimented with different wall treatments (clapboard, asphalt shingles, etc.) that complicated the angle of rebound of volleyed shots and produced a controlled chaos that slowly refined itself as his visiting collaborators learned the peculiarities of the court.
Fisk was pleased that his passions for architecture, sculpture, competition and bonhomie had successfully converged in this new sport/performance/artwork and he began to develop the idea and how it might be realized within a more formal exhibition space.  In preparation for the show, he expanded upon the theatrical possibilities (both in presentation and potential for audience) that the commercial gallery setting in Tribeca would provide. The result is a kind of non-site environment that evokes an outer borough environment of vinyl sided clapboards and shingled rooftops that form the irregular angles and planes that recalls the architecture of Court Tennis. A basement bulkhead door emerges from the floor at a 45-degree angle perfect for bewildering bank-shots; a pre-fab bay window presents a multi-faceted surface refracting the ball in unexpected ways; an open garage shelters a sculpture based on a boxy 1970s Volkswagen “Thing” whose windshield is also fair play. Two more of these themed vehicle sculptures (one evoking a military ambulance and the other a preposterously tricked out off-road vehicle with aftermarket flood lights and winch) are arrayed in the court’s adjacent “gallery” acting alternately as obstacles, artworks and seating for viewers of the match. The sculptures’ angular geometry acts as a catalyst for the court’s faceted architecture, unifying the exhibition as a whole.
Formal concerns aside, the development of the game has naturally teased out conversations about court etiquette, dress and decorum as signifiers of class, and the twinned elitisms of the tennis club and art world. Within the exhibition these are reflected in the players’ tennis whites and the ritualistic manners of play. Perhaps as an antidote to this reality, the hope is that Fisk can expand his community by inviting exhibition visitors to engage with both the built environment and discrete artworks and to become a part of the artwork itself.  In the process, he may simultaneously democratize the lofty status of tennis and the gallery space itself.
This exhibition closes Saturday 2/25/23.

Big Ol Ask Post Pt. 3 I think
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I haven’t drawn anything other than cursed or plain technical stuff w him 😔😔 have these for now but expect more soon!
anon a way back asked what he’d look like next to Overlord being already so big compared to Megs, that’s why you see Lordie if you’re wondering why he’s thrown in that line up!
by the way I have a voice claim for the big purple simp— Jenner from NIMH, he’s so awful but that suave baritone oh it fits too well >:] it’s the ‘humble servant’ line that got to me
Tumblr media
Yep! Pharma is absolutely in this AU—as well as the CFau and Crack one too—and in all, he’s still an estranged medic long since booted from any legal work back on Cybertron.
He lost his credibility and more all those years ago when he found himself willing to do his fair share of cutting corners and hastily concealed malpractice to expedite his dream of getting his name down in the medical books—ultimately impressing his dear Mentor Ratchet, finally, in perfecting long-since banned risky experiments and surgeries—not to mention cruel and unusual temperament with the (supposedly) taboo practice of non-medicinal mnemosurgery.
His ambitions and aggression always got the bet of him, this hasn’t changed since he found himself working in freelance outposts. Light years away from Cybertron, he’s made a name for himself as a Good Doctor—but to his under-the-table black market part-dealing clients, he’s just about as bad as a Crooked Medic can get.
Bounty hunters and Arms Dealers like him for his business, a certain DJD member likes him for the occasional berth company and seemingly never ending supply of fresh T-Cogs—but no one actually likes him for his nasty temperamental personality, save for a young and naive Ratchet once upon a time.
Pharma is a roamer, as of recent he’s been a hard to reach mech—seems as if he’s found a little project to keep himself pretty occupied in the last few decades—something about a breakthrough for aiding the Decepticon Energon Crisis :] him and a small, horrifyingly cheerful surgeon are well on their way to completing their first trial batches, it’s safe to say that their little synthetic mixture will have it’s users sated and compliant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they’ve got that amazing ‘new car smell’ those first few weeks, and instead of chittering like an Insecticons or vibrating their wings like a seeker—they beep and squeak, sometimes even honk a horn depending on the baseline altmode coding, to get their Creators’ attention before their vocalizer truly starts to kick online
It’s cute, but loud
Much like a seeker sparkling, they have to reach a certain ‘age’ (upgrade) to be able to transform completely, in between then they’re still able to rev those engines as a warning should they need it, as well as spin their wheels should they need a getaway HEELIES IF THEYRE LUCKY WOOHOOOOO—for seekers they can hover on their thrusters!
Tumblr media
Crusade is actually pretty formal with Megatron. But yeah as a kid, Megs was always known as Carrier, but as Sadie got older and more aware of their surroundings—they definitely came to learn the true weight of that title and the fact that they were the progeny of the faction leader, a fact they should have really held onto with more pride. Not wanting to draw more attention to the already blatant favoritism (and nepotism) Crusade made a switch to addressing Megatron as Sir, My Lord, Lord Megatron, —ect. to better fit in with their fellow troops.
It bothers Megatron more than than he lets on. Crusade shouldn’t have to hide their high ranking as his child, the heir to the faction. Megs is their Carrier and can only order them around for so long, as their Leader however—pulling rank may just allow for their infuriatingly stubborn sparkling to listen to them should a day come where even a Carrier’s plea is dismissed.
Crusade does slip up every now and then and a ‘Carrier’ will slip—often hushed and annoyed though as Megs does like to tease every now and then, gotta remind them that they’re still his baby every once in a while :’)
Optimus however—whenever him and Crusade should truly reunite, will never be called Sire by Crusade, which they so heatedly established early on—Crusade never needed one and they don’t need one now, better to not let the title trigger those long-suppressed emotions. Sure enough though Optimus will get his moment.
Tumblr media
actually no lmfao so you’re good! Eh, I haven’t mentioned much plot w them outside of them and Megs, plus bits of potential interactions with Optimus—so the rest of Team Prime is free game :D
For what I (hopefully will have) planned, their interactions with team Prime will be eh,,,interesting to each their own to say the least. Some more stressful than others BUT let’s not get into that until I’ve worked it out—for now I’ll just mention what they’re dynamics would be like when the drama of Oh Shit Boss Bot You’ve Been Hiding a Kid For HOW LONG has died down.
A usually touch-wary Crusade actually is the one to initiate a hug with Bulkhead, he’s the biggest and warmest and somehow is always happy to see them. Plus he tells cool recaps of Earth films and gifts them strange blobish paintings every now and then, all of which Crusade doesn’t exactly understand, but at least the colors are pretty.
Bee is annoying,,,which is what Crusade would say if confronted if they actually liked all the shenanigans Bee suggest they pull together, prank wars to the max, sparring for fun, video games?, DOUGHNUTS and RACES in the fortress halls??? Ahem. they are a super serious soldier, not a hooligan. But honestly, Bee is the one they seek out the most should they need an adventure, they missed out on a lot of this ‘fun’ growing up on the Nemesis—Bee seems to know how to balance a day of soldiering and dumbassery. sometimes.
Ratchet reminds them a bit too much of their Carrier than they’d care to admit. The medic is an old soul to his very core, perpetually tired but quick to snap into work mode, and sweet if you reallllllly squint. Sadie has been taught from day one to always respect medics, Ratchet obviously takes the cake on I’ve Seen Some Shit and for that alone Crusade both fears and admires Ratchet. Again, growing up on the Nemesis they didn’t have too many bots willing to talk much with them—but Ratchet (after he’s gone through his own lot of therapy, him AND Arcee. good lord) has a never ending pile of stories to share with them. Ratchet may throw in a few more colorful curses than necessary—which is SURPRISING bc Crusade thought they’d heard them all back home, but he’s entertaining and tells Crusade how it is, no sugarcoating. For that Crusade is grateful, there’s been too many half-truths thrown about to them in their recent years :’)
Ghost Prowl freaks them out—why does he deliberately have to be so sneaky?? Crusade has only met Prowl a fleeting handful of times (visits from the Allspark come with meaning, you know) and each time Crusade has been given nothing but odd riddles and poetic nonsense. Kidding. Prowl does like his wordplay’s but his given advice is always well meaning—the most firm and direct message Crusade has been passed though was probably most definitely “ Get those two cowards for mecha you call your Creator’s to stop fooling around with each other and SPEAK—at this rate it’s physically paining me that they haven’t begun Ritus and they’re not getting any younger”
Team Prime adores Sadie, they ask Megatron to see their sparkling photos every chance they catch him. And Crusade. hates it.

ladies and gentlemen this is ask dump no. 5
aw scrap here we go again!
answered asks include body modification as the opposite of empurata, Mutacons making bandages out of kibble, kibble used as furniture, numbers of Sweeps, a DILF alligator, RID15 Tidal Wave, a BIG infodump on dealing with the circus that is Iacon’s media, Cybertronian muppets, a WIP of Elita Infin1te (or rather her sword), and the many secret sufferings of Alpha Trion.
Tumblr media
yea, sorta! body modification in SNAP is more limited than in canon. you can’t simply switch out your body like the total frame reformats of IDW or TFP, and losing a limb can be permanent if not healed in time. for the most part, the frame you have is the frame you’re stuck with, and those frames fall within specific parameters.
HOWEVER-
some modification and upgrades do exist! the most prominent here would be a prosthetic helm like Lugnut. if the processor is left intact and attached after a helm injury, a new helm can be sculpted, with extra optics to make up for the lower quality of artificial optics, and as visibly different as possible to differentiate from empurata. other replacements and prosthetics are common after debilitating injury where the original body part cannot be saved. whether or not the prosthetic is as good as the original depends on the individual and the specific injury. there are also functional medical upgrades, like thicker armor attachments, alt mode additions, etc. almost every upgrade is for the express purpose of improving one’s frame for their function, and there’s definitely a limit to them. you can’t give yourself new limbs if you only had four to begin with. a grounder cannot become a flier. the spark can only power so much mass in the frame, and some people have adverse reactions that mean the upgrades don’t take and must be removed.
this sort of relates to the next point here-
Tumblr media
yes, with some caveats.
Cybertronians are a segmentary species, so they can detach some body parts for a bit without negative consequences, as long as that body part is reattached for revitalization and repair. many folks can do this without any medical assistance for the less integral kibble. for instance, Kup uses his tow arm as a walking stick, but he has to reattach it whenever he wants to go into alt mode, and if he doesn’t transform he still needs to reattach it for a couple hours every day at minimum. so if a Mutacon were to create a makeshift splint out of kibble and detach it, it would likely be fine, as long as they got that kibble back. otherwise, they’ve lost a whole chunk of their body that they can’t just regenerate.
for shifting armor to cover a wound without detaching it, that depends on the nature of the wound. if it’s ragged, large, or in areas with a lot of joints or movement, it might be difficult to shuffle around plating to cover it. a more superficial injury in a less delicate area would be easier
Tumblr media
sort of! it’ll depend on the individual’s kibble, of course! double checking SNAP Bulkhead, i don’t think he could, because his kibble isn’t large enough. but Scylla could probably use her alt mode arms as a chair, Wreck-Gar has a built in backpack and belly bag, and of course the Necrobot uses his wingcloak as hands. different kibble with different bonus uses
Tumblr media
the ideal number of Sweeps is seven, since less than that means they don’t have enough collective processing power to function optimally. more than seven, however, puts a strain on that collective processing power to smoothly operate so many at once. so there’s usually packs of as close to seven as they can get.
as to how many can just exist at the same time, it’s limited only by how many Scourge is willing to forge. he first invents them in s1e06 A Use for Army-building! An Upgrade to Sweeps. by the next episode they figure out that having dozens of them running around is... well it’s about as chaotic as having dozens of flying puppies with hands and weapons would be. in large numbers they’re very difficult to control. good thing Galvatron is excellent at commanding his new army!
Tumblr media
(the post this is referring to) @oldboyjensenhinglemeier thanks Dilf Waitress, i can always rely on you
Tumblr media
(the post this is referring to) i think that’s fantastic, i’d love to see a Cybertronian whale. imagine the size of the holding cell you’d have to have for him!
Tumblr media
oooohohoho what a sticky subject. here’s a quick rundown on faction ideology to give you some context for how they operate and thus deal with the media. the heroes aren’t referred to as heroes, but rather as vigilantes at best and violent gangs in a turf war at worst. Froid has remotely diagnosed them with pathological dissent. at the same time, some folks have jumped on the market to make hero merch, and it becomes a very lucrative business for some. public opinion is constantly torn between fear and anger at how they do whatever they’d like and gratitude and admiration for how they throw themselves in harms way to prevent disaster and save people. it’s really a giant mess all the time that changes by the day.
there is of course the whole snafu surrounding the media’s portrayal of the Elite Guard as a backup team for the Autobots, and Elita 1 as Optimus’ sidekick. and Elita 1 is Not Happy about that. Elita 2 is startlingly good at winding the reporters around her little finger and always seems to know just what to say, whereas Elita 3 just grumbles at the cameras, even sometimes demanding they respect boundaries or be locked in the nearest building with the use of her powers. Elita 4 barely notices them unless she’s in the mood to prank someone, and Elita 5 just avoids them, as they tend to dramatize her size and thus her danger. given their excellent teamwork and how they’re (mostly) in favor of reform instead of anarchy, the Elite Guard would actually have a good shot at getting along with the news, except they bow to precisely no one, including the people wanting to interview them, so instead they come across as a standoffish and self-serving clique with dangerous habits
the Decepticons are in the bad-boy limelight and they love it. well, at least Galvatron, Hellscream, and Thunderblast do. Galvatron takes advantage of every opportunity to pontificate on the evils of society and the right to rise up for freedom. broadcasters have learned to cut the cameras as soon as he starts speaking so his ideas don’t get the chance to spread too far. Hellscream cares less about principles and more about scaring the living daylights out of every reporter he sees, often leaving them with cracked equipment and ringing audials from the sheer destructive power of his voice. Thunderblast just wants to preen in all the attention and boy does she get it. Cyclonus actively avoids most gawkers, Scourge talks too long and complicated to make good news, Drift either ignores them or sends them away with some lofty spiritual advice, and Triptych is dangerously unpredictable so most reporters have learned to stay away from him.
the Predacons came into existence in a negative light, and they were grimly prepared for it. after all, Sixshot used to be a Decepticon, and their falling-out and defection caused quite a stir. when Abominus first appeared, the fearful reaction of the public to such an ‘abomination’ is actually how he chose his name in the first place. Airachnid loves tormenting reporters with nuclear-grade sarcasm and subtle threats, but if anyone makes her truly mad she’ll string them up in her web cabling and leave them hanging. she also flaunts that cabling by using her darts to knit nets, shawls, and other decorations, despite the fact that getting cabling tangled up in seams and joints can lead to something called entrapment protocols, mentioned in the seventh ask here. Enforcers use capture equipment designed to trigger entrapment protocols, so her mimicry of that as nothing more than a casual accessory is a big ‘frag you’.
Soundwave.... is a category of his own. he only comes into being in the fourth season, but the media soon learns to quake at the thought of encountering Soundwave, and his minicons are little better. there’s at least one instance where he Rosanna-rolls the entirety of Iacon.
the Autobots keep wavering between ‘the only true good ones of all these vigilantes’ and ‘the worst possible people in the world, hide the children, lock the doors’ in the eyes of the media. Optimus does his best to treat everyone fairly, and the Mistress usually has something encouraging to share. much like Galvatron but for completely opposite reasons, broadcasters have learned to cut cameras when Ultra Magnus starts talking, because his encyclopedic knowledge of law means he regularly lists every instance of malpractice, abuse, illegality, and disrespect that he sees in the average reporter, Enforcer, or politician, which is not the kind of upbraiding that would serve the propaganda machine. however, it does get him the attention of Tyrest, who leverages legality and public opinion to try and draw Ultra Magnus into an agreement during s3e03- A Councilmember’s Boon! An Upgrade to Legality. Rodimus is a chaos beast who has been known to snatch cameras for selfies. it’s kind of a tossup as to whether Cheetor will be going slow enough to show up in the footage or not.
now, i can’t talk about the media without mentioning the feral force of nature that is Rewind. the best of the best, he’s the only one willing to brave the battlefields for an up-close look, constantly endangering himself in order to get the freshest scoop. he might not always hold opinions in line with the mandated propaganda about these vigilantes, but the media lets him get away with it, since he’s the most successful at getting them more news. this has caused him to be targeted at least once, unfortunately.
Tumblr media
love this question. love it. you know those lil remote controlled robot dogs, or things to that effect? i’m imagining that’s what Cybertronian muppets are like, since they can create robotics and animatronics with a lot more finesse and ease than we can. in fact, making fabric is probably harder for them than robotics, since they don’t have the same materials as we do to work with. but anyway, these muppets wouldn’t be limited by what a hand can do to puppet them around, being instead remote controlled from off stage, so i don’t know if they’d have that kind of visual gag. maybe instead there would be fourth-wall breaking where one muppet snatches the remote of another?
Tumblr media
the painful thing about this answer is that i have a design i’m happy with EXCEPT FOR THE HELM i have sketched and resketched a dozen different ideas ugh. the body looks fine, all five of them combined in a way that makes sense to me, but i just CANNOT get the helm right i’m so angry. anyway here’s the Cyber Caliber, all of their swords combined into one massive weapon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the more accurate question is, what hasn’t happened to him. he’s been through a lot, the poor mech. but i’ll list some things for you:
that one time he had a sibling be erased from reality
that one time he had to murder another sibling because they decided evil was fun
that one time a fragging beachball stole his work
the fact he doesn’t know if his twin is alive or not
that one time he was a junker running for his life
that one time he was too late to save the Terminus Blade, and it was stolen
that one time his pride and joy, the Athenaum Sanctorum, was destroyed, and everything archived there was lost
that other time the same fragging beachball stole his work
that other time he was a junker hiding for his life
the fact that the theft of his diary started a whole new branch of religion and he has to read his own words as if they’re sacred
the fact that the title of Trion was in fact derived from his diary, and the sheer painful irony of being given the title of Trion.
that one time he had to rip off some fingers to fit in
that one time Trypticon showed up, awhile before the JAAT was founded, and he had to take it on alone
that other time Trypticon showed up when the JAAT opened and he had to hand out some precious relics to children to protect the school
aaaaand his current reason for drinking! the fact that of all twenty-something heroes running around, he only knows who THREE of them are because he only gave out THREE RELICS! and relics just keep disappearing from the collection he’s guarding
someone help him he is not having a good time. and it’s only going to get worse...

Part VI - 5 Empires
Tumblr media
As best you could figure, there were three compartment rooms exclusive for your and Conrad’s use. The first was the combined living room and your office. The second was a smaller room, connected to your office, that served as Conrad’s office – his nerve center, as you came to think of it. The third room was a single bedroom with a bed just big enough for two; built-in wardrobe and drawers lining the walls; and a small, functional bathroom. Or head, as the onboard sailors called it.
Beyond those three compartments, your movements were fairly limited and presided over by the seemingly indifferent crew that moved around you. “Miss Fox”, they all called you, inclining their heads politely when you passed or encountered them in the wardroom. Fortunately, no one waited on you hand and foot. You had free reign in the wardroom for food, coffee, and snacks. Hell, you suspected you might gain weight on this voyage with no chance to run or get any real exercise. At least the clothes that had been provided for you were surprisingly practical – suits with both trousers and skirts, tasteful blouses, silken cami and shorts sleepwear – all perfectly in your size.
Between working and surfing channels on the TV, you kept busy enough. It was still surprising that wireless internet or satellite or whatever it was worked so seamlessly underwater for all digital connections during your voyage.
Now that you were trapped with him underwater, living day-to-day, sharing a bed every night...it was disturbingly domestic and not. He still hadn’t told you much that was practical about anything, other than how to operate the shower controls.
You’d thought that, surely, now that you were here with him and no means of escape - maybe you would finally be privileged to know the grand plan. But you didn’t even know where the submarine was heading. You didn’t have your passport, but somehow you didn’t think that would be a problem whenever you arrived. But if this was his big move - or if he was making big moves - then would you at least be privileged to know if he won? Or if he lost?
That thought sat funny with you. If he lost. Of course, it was possible and, in fact, quite probable. Supervillains bent on world domination never won in the movies or comic books. But did you really consider Conrad a supervillain?
Hard to say.
He didn’t act much differently. He’d always walked and stood with the authority that he owned the world. With LOKI, he certainly had, and nothing about that had changed now. His cool, controlled demeanor had yet to slip, even though you spent a lot more concentrated time around him. At first, you feared what the single bed in the one bedroom would herald, but until last night, he’d been an unexpectedly, perfect gentleman. And even then, he’d only given you what you all but took from him.
You hadn’t meant to wake up. But the motion of the bed as he slid beneath the sheets stirred you. His scent enveloped you, always so enticing. Your hand reached out in a sleepy haze, settling to the hard plane of his chest, fingers tangling in the light scatter of hair. The heat of his body permeated the air, a welcome contrast to the chill of the submarine’s filtered air. Your head drifted on the pillow, only wanting to curl closer.
His minty breath fanned your face as a warm, solid hand covered yours, pressing it flat against his skin. Arousal suffused you, warm and rolling. Your legs twitched against the sheets, brushing his coarse leg hair. His nose skimmed yours as you breathed him in.
When your lips met his, there was no resistance. No illusion. Half-lucid drowsiness had given way to aching want, and he groaned softly as you rolled atop him. His hand rose to frame your face, angling you deeper into the kiss as his other hand drifted down your spine. You moaned, low and breathy, as tongues tangled and you felt his arousal grow against you. Without realizing it, your hips started to roll in slow, teasing waves.
In a fluid, tender motion you were on your back with the heat of his body everywhere above you. Those nimble fingers caressed your breast through the silk of your cami as he angled his hips to let you slide down his sleep shorts. Yours went next and you whimpered at the feel of him, hard and heavy, against your core. With no words, no questions, he pushed inside, burying to the hilt before setting a slow, steady pace.
He brushed that secretive, intense place within you on each stroke, tearing raw moans from your throat. Tears stung your eyes, overwhelmed and overcome, as he continued to move, your fingers digging into the muscles of his back. His forehead rested against yours, noses nuzzling as you each gasped and moaned your shared pleasure. With the deep slide of him inside and the press of him outside, it didn’t take long until your release burst in blinding euphoria.
And you did the unthinkable. Words slipped from your lips before you could even think.
“Oh, Tom….”
You didn’t realize what you’d said until later. Much later. After he’d told you not to wash away the evidence of your shared passion. After you’d fallen asleep, curled into him, despite the tacky moisture pooling between your thighs. After you’d woken to see the sheets stained beyond reuse. After he’d brought enough breakfast and coffee for two as you each dressed for the day.
And now...now, you braced for his response. For his inevitable retaliation for the liberties you took, either with his given name or his person. He’d never given you permission to call him ‘Tom’.
You blew another sigh, distracted from your work yet again. And all of that was to say nothing of even beginning to analyze what drove you into his arms at the late night hour in the first place. Was this the beginning of some twisted captivity dependency? Where you were just that desperate for human contact that you turned to your captor?
Not quite. He hadn’t abducted you. You could have pitched a fit, refused to go, and likely wound up in the bottom of the harbor along with your watch. But you didn’t. You were here.
The VI on the bottom of your foot throbbed.
But the hours continued to progress, and it proved just another day under the water.
Until it wasn’t. Until he lounged on the couch, oddly close to you, oddly relaxed. His tie had disappeared, along with his suit jacket. The top buttons of his dark shirt revealed a tease of skin, and his sleeves were cuffed just above his elbows. He sipped from a highball of scotch as you nursed your wine. The TV droned mindlessly on global news, current events.
“It’s been four days,” you started softly, “are we still planning to arrive tomorrow?”
He took a slow sip of scotch. “Yes.”
“Is that when I’ll learn more?”
He cut you with a wry, sideways look. “Don’t you want to maintain some plausible deniability?”
You bristled. Sure, you’d thought of that, but you didn’t like the insulation on his voice. You weren’t ready for him to make a rash decision on your behalf and cut off your left foot. “At this point…after last night – difficult to deny I’m not a willing participant in your coup or revolution or whatever you’re terming it.”
“It’s neither of those things.” He paused for another mouthful of scotch. “Certainly nothing so dramatic. Dramatic change invites a dramatic response, which does no one any good. Subtlety is key until the moment of revel.”
You couldn’t hold back a soft snort. “Until you…what? Rise out of the water on a fountain of righteousness?”
“Nothing so fantastical. The dominoes will start to fall tomorrow. You’ll see.”
You took another drink of wine, debating pushing your luck. Why not? “I thought you might be angry, or...displeased after last night.”
He hummed softly, his eyes darting up and down your torso as he raised a hand to his mouth, teasing his thumb with his front teeth . “Now, why would you think that?”
“No one calls you ‘Thomas’, let alone ‘Tom’.” You weren’t going to mention that conversation with Amelia. “I just want to know if I should be on my guard for you to corner me against the bulkhead for another of your so-called ‘lessons’.”
“In the dark of night with you warming my bed so freely, you’ll find little behind closed doors that displeases me. However, should such an incident bleed over into the daylight, that will be a different discussion.”
You blinked, doubting you heard him right. “That...that’s it?”
He turned to you with a distantly annoyed expression. “I’ve told you before - you’re not one for trite questions. You have what you have. And soon…,” his lips curled in a wolfish smile, “we’ll have the world.”
You’re not sure how you slept that night, but you did. You did, and you worked until he interrupted you, switching on the news.
“Alright, thank you, Adam.” The anchor turned back to face the main camera. “Again, to recap - if you’re just joining us - we’re 14 hours into what’s already being called the most massive market shakeup in history. The trend started in the Japan Exchange Group - the world’s 3rd largest financial market. A trickle of sales and acquisitions that grew to cascading proportions, with far-reaching impacts into the Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges. Financial analysts are now reporting the moves permeated across these markets now have spread through the Bombay Stock Exchange, and are starting to manifest in Euronext. We have our own analyst, Ted Marshall, joining us now. Hello, Ted.”
The newscast split screens, and a spectacled man in a frumpy suit joined the anchor. “Hello, yes - as you said - the financial world has never seen movement of this magnitude. And, to be clear, we’re talking about movements of tectonic proportions that have left investors around the globe scratching their heads and frantically trying to keep up.”
“As we’ve already seen, six of the ten largest markets in the world have already been impacted. What risk do you see for the remaining four markets?”
“I don’t think it’s a risk at all - I think it’s a predictable reality. Pinhole leaks precede a tsunami wave breaching a seawall. We’ve already seen those pinhole streams flow from one market to the next as trading floors open and then the big wave hits. It’s as if someone has found the thread that unites all of the world’s major markets, and is following that thread across the time zones, pulling to unravel and create something new.” Ted shook his head, as if in disbelief. “The world’s top ten stock markets control almost 80% of the global wealth. If what we’re seeing continues on through the UK and US based markets, then we could be looking at the largest redistribution and consolidation of wealth in history.”
You stared at the TV, nearly agape. This was unreal...it had to be. It didn’t make sense - how could....?
A cold chill ran down your spine as you glared over at Conrad. Sure, he was normally a man of confident bearing, but the intense pride that suffused his handsome face was unsettling. Slowly, he turned towards you, the corner of his mouth lifting as he spoke. “Admittedly, it was a hard thread to identify.” He muted the TV volume. “It took me years to execute the right contracts, plan the right mergers. And then more time, still, to recruit foot soldiers. But the sales and acquisitions will continue to waterfall through the western markets - until they seize upon the floors of the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange, with LOKI emerging a triumphant victor.” He glanced back at the TV with an almost secretive air. “The reporters have it right - the world’s top ten markets do control nearly 80% of the global wealth, and by the time of the closing bell on Wall Street - 75% of that wealth will be directly under my control.”
Your eyes widened. “You’re just...you’re stealing the global wealth to fund your takeover?”
“Did you hear any mention of illegal activity?” He cut back to you with a sharp look. “That’s the beauty of it - all the sales, all of this tectonic movement and consolidation - has been out in the open for everyone and anyone to exploit, given the right resources and strength of will. Surely, I don’t need to remind you that I have both of those fully at my disposal.”
“But that’s...that’s….” Words escaped you as you turned back to the TV, seeing the headlines and stock market numbers on the screen. It was...dammit, it was smart, it was genius...it was terrifying. You forced a swallow. “So, what then? Once you control 75% of the global wealth, what happens then?”
“With 75% of the global economy facing bankruptcy, world leaders will have very little choice. But as I’ve said before, it’s a balance act to prove one has enough bases covered. Economic prowess is not enough to bring the nations into alignment, so it must be supplemented.” He glanced down at his watch, swiping through the touchscreen and pushing a side button.
The TV channel changed to a tactical display - a visual of the world’s continents with major cities marked and identified. Each city had a stock market indicator, tracking the progression of wealth accumulation, and symbols that looked like traffic signals. Most of the cities just had one traffic signal indicator, but some cities like Tokyo and London had two indicators. Washington, D.C. had three indicators. In fact, now that you looked again - all cities had red lights at the top of the indicators, but Tokyo and Beijing’s indicators were yellow.
You gulped, trying to understand. Both Tokyo and Beijing had a full wealth accumulation tracker, so what did the yellow lights represent? You turned to Conrad, his gaze fixed on you, observing your study of the map. “The yellow lights...does that represent your supplement?”
The dark grin that curled his lips didn’t reach his eyes. “It represents an inbound warhead. Two targets in Tokyo and one in Beijing - undetectable by radar, too small for anti-missile defense, and enough firepower to reduce the seats of those governments to smoldering ruins.” He waved at the TV. “With a few strategic hits, the old guard will visibly crumble, paving the way for a new world.”
“That’s monstrous!” You stared at him wide-eyed in disbelief. “Killing all those innocent people!”
“Innocent is a kind word for those who have brought the world to such a state. A few will perish, yes. Such important buildings are never truly empty, even after hours when the majority of its occupants are off basking in the wealth of their reaping.”
“But you can’t…that - that makes you no better than they are.”
“There are only so many ways to get their attention, and in this case - it’s best to speak languages they understand.”
You shook your head, still horrified. “Money and violence.”
“Precisely.”
You wanted to keep admonishing him, yelling at him, and even beg him to stop. Each scenario played out with ultimate futility in your mind. This was his submarine, this was his show, and this was his moment. Nothing in his overbearing arrogance would bend to your wishes that he cease and desist.
So, you watched. You watched the stock market wealth accumulators fill. You watched the traffic signals drop from red to yellow, and ultimately to green. You tried not to think about how many lives each light represented. Occasionally, the TV would revert back to the news - each station overwhelmed with the amount of incoming information, updates on world leaders rushed to safety, financial markets upheaved, buildings exploding into flame in yet another new city.
It was terrible to watch. Terrible, and yet - like a train crash - impossible to look away.
After time, after hours - eventually, the last wealth accumulator peaked. The last signal turned green.
And nothing. Nothing happened. The submarine continued along, just as it always had. Just another day under the water, blissfully oblivious to the destruction raging across the continents above. You’d completely lost track of the hour, feeling a deep bone-weary exhaustion gnaw at you. You couldn’t even recall the last time you’d eaten, your stomach a giant knot from all the anxious news activity.
Still, you watched coverage of the fallout. Unknown numbers of injured, but significantly less than if the buildings had been occupied. And the list of damage was extensive. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. The Great Hall of the People. The Kremlin. The Grand National Assembly of Turkey. The Government of India Building. The Palace of Westminster. Buckingham Palace. The White House. The United States Capitol. But you already knew - you’d seen the map.
But then came a breaking announcement. After the twenty-four hours of chaos, everything had fallen still and quiet. No more inbound missiles. No more stock market movement. In fact, the governments of the world were beginning to read the outcome in the settling dust, starting to grasp that the vast wealth of the global economy was no longer theirs to control.
There were too many questions and not enough answers in the chaos - but there was a note. A single message with a concise purpose that arrived at the United Nations conspicuously after the last missile fell.
It brought a request. A request for a meeting. A request to talk through the global situation. And the meeting was due to start within minutes. World leaders from all over the globe planned to call in and listen firsthand to the discussion. And, of course, the origin of the note was untraceable and anonymous.
But you knew who had sent it.
He stood next to you now, dressed in the finest suit of his collection. The crispest cut, the sharpest fit, and the dark navy color did wonders for the crystal blue of his eyes. He looked like a man of power. Like...like the ruler of the world.
He caught your gaze with a sideways smirk before he turned for the door to his office. “Mustn’t be late, you know.”
You exhaled shakily. “So...so, that’s it? It’s over? You...won?”
He paused at the door, turning back for one last glance, steely determination glinting in his eyes. “What other choice do they have?”
The door closed behind him, and you held your breath.
The End

Between a Captain and an Officer [Drabble]
On days like this, when the weather folded in around the brig and both sea and sky were a uniform shade of slate, R'khan saw as much from inside his cabin as he could from standing on the quarterdeck. More, in some ways. He could observe without being seen, listen to every movement as it travelled through the boards to his ears. Right now he could hear Vilayn loping back and forth across the weather deck, swearing at the fog, and the Ald Varay following his orders to trim sail, while the sugary smell of skooma smoke told him Jo'Raya was leading the Khajiit in one of their rituals. An occasional scratch against the hull would be Xisthia on a swim, hopefully scouting ahead while visibility above water was poor, but probably oblivious to anything which wasn’t shiny rocks. A steady rustle and thump, Ethysil studying his holy books. Rosie sharpening her tools in the surgery. Azareth taking stock in the hold. The watch changeover finished not five minutes ago, too, so that meant any moment now--
'Captain?'
R'khan capped his inkwell, slotted the quill into its stand, and folded his hands on his desk, leaving the letter he was writing in full view. The ink shone in the lamplight.
'Enter.'
Tosti slipped through the narrow doorway, leaning to avoid hitting his head on the timber, and stood before the desk, bent at the shoulders, until he was waved into the seat opposite R'khan's. He lowered himself with a sigh.
'Thank you, captain. I'm here to report on the Vel Varay. Not that there's much to say.'
'Say it anyway, lad.'
'No incidents, and the weather was mostly calm. Wind's getting up from the south, which might blow some of the fog away.'
While he listened to the finer details of the sounding and Drasonval's opinion on their location, R'khan reached across to the cabinet set into the bulkhead, where he stored a selection of bottles and glasses. He picked out a bottle of Hunding wine and poured it into two glasses, one of which he slid forwards across the table, hand firmly on the base until Tosti had lifted it to prevent it toppling off the table with the roll of the brig.
'Thank you. I'll write it in the log. Now, if I ain't much mistaken, you look as if you wouldn't mind sharing a glass. This damned fog is getting under everyone's skin.'
'That's kind of you, captain.'
'Just don't go talking politics on me. If we ever find that bleeding Company frigate again, I ain't holding back.'
Tosti only smiled and took the glass.
'Did you pick this up in Morrowind?'
'Me? Nah, lad. Straight from source. Markets'll gut you for a crumb of scuttle, let alone good wine. If you can't get it straight off the ship, go and fetch it yourself.'
He took a sip and nodded his approval. After a few moments of easy, companionable silence, Tosti patted a hand against the table, beside the letter.
'I see you're writing to the Admiral.'
'Reading me personal correspondence, eh?'
'I guess I am. But you wouldn't have left it there if you didn't want me to.'
The ink was almost dry now. R'khan tilted his glass from side to side and crossed one leg over the other, beneath the desk.
'Maybe I left it there to test you,' he said.
'Did I pass?'
Not a trace of worry showed itself on Tosti's face as he waited for his judgement. Every move was perfect, from the way he settled his elbow easily onto the side of his chair to the casual taste of wine. After a pause which went on for only a second too long, R'khan smiled.
'Sure you did, lad. Aye, I'm writing to the old anchor. Get it in the neck when I come home if I don't keep her informed of me movements. Worse than the guard for that, she is.'
It was Tosti's turn to stare across the table. He could have been savouring the wine, which was sweet and tingled with the spices infused throughout, but his eyes remained steadily on R'khan's, creased and just a little heavy. Footsteps pattered overhead, followed by Drasonval's voice, heavy in the fog, reporting the latest results from the sounding lead. Both men below listened, and relaxed at the same time when the numbers were safe and as expected.
'How did you meet her?' asked Tosti at last. R'khan rolled his eyes to the skylight.
'Can't you ask Vilayn?'
'I did. He said she was a rival pirate captain called the Butcher, who agreed to settle down, live up to her namesake and marry you after you bested her in a duel as punishment for stealing your treasure.' Tosti grinned. 'Took place in during the worst storm Tamriel had ever seen, if I remember right, but I could be mixing it up with one of his other stories. A lot of things seem to happen in the worst storm Tamriel has ever seen when Vilayn talks about them.'
'And that ain't that good enough for you? B'vehk, what else do you want me to add? That we was fighting with swords we'd stolen from the Daedra? That Lady Ayem presided over the ceremony?'
'If you don't mind, I thought maybe the truth. Between a captain and an officer.'
R'khan lowered his glass, fingers firmly around the stem, and slid the letter across the desk towards himself with his spare hand. The ink, now dry, covered most of the page, awaiting only his name to finish it off. He tucked the parchment into one of the desk's hidden drawers without adding anything more.
'The truth ain't that interesting,' he said. 'We met in the market back in Blacklight, I asked her to dinner at the cornerclub, and that's about it.' He shook his head. 'Sometimes the story is better.'
'And there's no truth to it at all?'
'About as much truth as there is to me hanging skeletons off of the masthead so they dances in the wind as we approach. Sorry, lad. Didn't know you had a romantic streak.'
Tosti's face did look thoughtful, but he pressed his lips together at the rim of the glass. The breath from his nostrils fogged up the crystal and rippled the surface of the wine.
'I don't. I just think it's strange.'
'What?'
'You meeting her in the market. You said you only buy straight off the ships or from the source.'
‘Taking a shortcut, wasn’t I?’
‘It’s never a shortcut through the market. You get stopped by fifty merchants trying to sell you fake jewellery before you've taken a step.’
A pithy retort, a neat excuse, some sort of comeback had to be coming. No doubt it would have been irrefutable. Whatever it was, however, it was lost as the boards outside the cabin creaked. The sound was too quiet and the tread too light to be Vilayn's. R'khan glanced across at Tosti, for the first time since the discrepancy had been pointed out, and barely had time to bid the visitor enter before Luca tumbled into the cabin.
In the limited space, she had to push up against the back of Tosti's chair to make herself seen, although as a rule Luca's presence was hard to ignore. She passed off her version of a salute and leapt into an explanation of her arrival.
'Mister Vilayn's compliments, R'khan, an' he says the lookout seed the frigate to starboard.'
R'khan drained his glass and fixed it into its holder, his back to Tosti. When he turned again he was smiling.
'Looks like I'd best be off. Those skeletons ain't going to string up themselves, eh? You got five minutes to arm yourself and be up on deck, Mr Tosti. Don't waste 'em going through me desk 'cause you won't find anything interesting.' He strode to the door and paused. 'Only... stories.'

Warnings for Chapter 11: none
~~~
Leia sat on the floor of the main hold, going through Han’s music selection. He was in the far circuitry bay tinkering, but he’d answered a query of hers before he left by pointing her towards the wall compartment where the music datacards were stored, all in a jumbled heap. She’d raised an eyebrow at the mess, then gathered them up and set them on the floor, sorting them alphabetically as she perused with interest.
She examined one of them closer. Kloo Horn Blues by Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes: she’d vaguely heard that the jizz band was popular in the Outer Rim. She’d have to give it a listen sometime. Nebula Songs by Aurodia Ventafoli—a classic; it seemed like everyone in the galaxy knew and loved the “Chanteuse of the Stars.” Her music practically dripped with romance, and Leia made a mental note of it for later (just in case). More jizz bands she wasn’t very familiar with. Khyyynett, the late Wookiee clarion trumpeter—probably one of Chewie’s favorites. Kor Vella Fever by The Bloodstripes, the upbeat album they’d listened to towards the beginning of the trip, and Those Old Spacer Blues by Grondorn Muse, another Corellian who had performed once or twice for the Alliance.
There were some classical albums: Kithra and Berltagh’s sonatas, Mondegrene’s Fugue in K. She gasped to see Tofli Argala’s Spring Symphony; the Nabooian composer’s masterpiece was often played in the Organa household while she was growing up. There were a few dance albums, too: the critically acclaimed B’ssa Nuuvu by Telindel and Saerlock, and even the Alderaanian band Heartbeat of Istabith, which increased her nostalgia even more.
Suddenly, Leia froze, eyes widening at the name spelled out on the datacard she’d just picked up. Melodic Order. That was the Alderaanian cloister choir she’d rescued after the Battle of Yavin! How had Han known about them? Their music was so unlike anything else in his collection; contemplative and ethereal and so very classically Alderaanian that she had a hard time imagining him listening to it.
But perhaps the more curious question was how Han had managed to get hold of it. She stared at the album title and frowned. Forever Lost, Forever Onward. An album she didn’t know, with a name that hinted of… she caught her breath. He must have picked this up recently, within the past few years. She wondered why he’d never told her about it. Trembling, she inserted it into the dataplayer.
She leaned back against the bulkhead, closing her eyes as the beautifully haunting, melodious strains washed over her. She’d grown up listening to Melodic Order and countless other Alderaanian choirs. Hearing them again felt so familiar, so like home and family and love and security, so like the innocence of a forever-lost childhood that she couldn’t stop the tears from welling.
The first song ended, and Leia opened her eyes, blinking. Han stood at the entrance to the hold, a sheepish smile on his face. “Er… I forgot that was in there. I, uh, remembered you talking about that choir. Found the datacard on the black market during one of my supply runs. Was saving it to give you as a gift, but…” he shrugged. “Guess you beat me to it.” He frowned. “Look, I’m sorry if it’s the wrong thing right now, I didn’t mean—”
In a moment she was off the floor and across it, flinging her arms around him. “It’s perfect,” she whispered into his chest. “Thank you.” He held her close, and she felt him relax. Leaning down, he gave her a kiss on the forehead.
The next song had already started; this one was a little bit more buoyant and upbeat. “It’s pretty,” Han remarked.
“Come and listen.”
Han grimaced. “To a whole hour of this? That could get boring pretty qui—” he caught sight of Leia’s face and stopped short. “Then again, it is really pretty. I’ll bring some stuff in to work on while we listen.”
She grinned, triumphant.
A few minutes later, they were both settled on the floor—Han against the bulkhead with a magna-driver and a gravity compensator module, and Leia lying on her back near him, eyes closed once more as she tried to savor every lovely, heart-wrenching note.
The music rose and fell, soaring like thrantas over the River Wuitho. It was at times as merry as a field of starflowers and as solemn and mournful as the wind on the peaks. But woven through it all like the threads of a tapestry was a sense of longing so immense that Leia felt like her heart might burst from it. The lyrics intensified it; the voices sung of grief and remembrance, of yearning for what was no more, but also for what might someday be. Along with that yearning, hope was named, a hope Leia clung to like a rock in swift water.
The album was over halfway through when all at once her eyes snapped open and she sat up. “What did they just say?”
“Hmm?” Han mumbled from against the bulkhead as he strained the magna-driver against a particularly stubborn fastener.
Leia frowned as the song reached its chorus.
Symbol of hope, wreathed in white. Our death she saw but stalwart she fights. The remnant she gathers, our hearts she stirs, our doom she defies. The princess will bring us into light.
“No,” she whispered. Suddenly feeling very ill, she got up and stumbled to the corridor.
“Leia?” She vaguely heard Han’s concerned voice calling after her. Jamming her hand against the controls to the crew quarters, she lurched towards the ‘fresher and sank down on the floor beside it. Han caught up with her. “You all right, Princess?” He frowned. “You look really pale.” He sat down next to her.
Concentrating, she tried to slow her heartbeat. She had already begun to swallow down the initial wave of nausea, but she was still reeling. “Did you hear what they were singing?”
“Uh, something about hope and light?”
Leia stared at the wall across from her. “It was about me,” she whispered.
A cloud passed over Han’s eyes. “The hell do they think they are? You saved them! If they’ve been talking trash—”
“No, Han. It’s not that. It’s….” She felt lost for words; it was hard to speak at all right now, much less clearly. How could she explain this? He laid his hand, palm up, on the floor between them. She clasped it and took a deep breath. “They sung about me like I was one of the old Alderaanian gods.” She shook her head. “A ‘symbol of hope.’ Like I was going to make everything right.” She clenched her teeth as another wave of nausea swept over her.
Han gave her a funny look. “But you are a symbol of hope, Leia. To the whole galaxy. You agreed with the ol’ stooges in high command when they decided to make you one. It’s important, right?”
“Yes, Han, but this is different.”
He opened his mouth like he was about to argue some more, but then he seemed to think better of it and sat there, waiting. Wise move, whispered the wry part of her mind that was somehow still hovering nearby, outside of the body that trembled and felt sick. He squeezed her hand and looked into her eyes, concerned.
Closing her eyes for a moment, she sighed. “I can’t be their idol, Han. I can’t be their goddess of light now that Alderaan is gone. If they knew… if they knew what part I played in their loss, they wouldn’t say such things. They’d be praying that the god of justice destroys my soul.” She gritted her teeth; the last words had come out sharp and hard, like a gavel.
“Leia—”
“Han, I don’t care what you say. I don’t deserve this. I will never deserve this. I may not be directly to blame, but you know just as well as I do that if it weren’t for my actions, Alderaan would still be here. I chose to rebel.” She paused, voice breaking. “And what’s maybe even worse is that I’m still glad I rebelled. Maybe that makes me a monster, or maybe I just believe in something greater than all of us. But I’m implicated. I can take steps to bring justice and peace to the galaxy and what’s left of my people, but I will never be able to assuage my guilt or bring Alderaan back.” She laid her head on Han’s shoulder. “I can’t be their perfect symbol of hope, Han. And I’m not. A whole lot of people do blame me.”
Han was quiet for a moment. Then he leaned over and kissed her head. “You did the right thing, sweetheart,” he murmured. “You, and your parents, and, hell, all the Alderaanians who wanted somethin’ better than the Empire.”
Leia paused at his words. She exhaled slowly as the implications hit her.
It wasn’t just you.
He wrapped his arms around her. She let herself be drawn in closer, and they both rested there, quiet for awhile.
Her mind was still a mess, but eventually she felt the nausea dissipate and her heartbeat grow calmer. She was struck by a sudden desire to move on with things, to leave this awkward little episode behind. Gently she untangled herself and got to her feet; he followed suit.
“Well,” she said awkwardly, stretching her arms on her hips.
“I shoulda known that wouldn’t’ve gone too well,” Han said apologetically.
“No, Han, thank you. That music…” she shook her head. “I needed it. Maybe not the one song, but the rest… it means so much to me. It’s home.” She looked at him standing there, leaning against the wall, worry lines fading from his face, and she smiled. Suddenly she had a thought—a small opening, a chance to dig a little deeper—and she took it. “You ever have any music like that?”
“Music that reminds me of home?” He chuckled bitterly. “I haven’t had a home worth remembering, ‘cept the Falcon.”
Leia winced inwardly at her mistake. “Oh, I don’t mean like that. I mean the kind that goes down really deep. That means something important to you.”
Han looked thoughtful. “Yeah,” he said after a moment. “I guess I do.”
“Can I hear it?”
Moments later they were back in the main hold, and Han was digging haphazardly through the piles of datacards she’d nearly finished organizing. She considered that her efforts to bring a little order might well be hopeless, and she shook her head, amused.
Han found the datacard he was looking for. A wistful smile tugged at his lips as he examined it, and then he tossed it to Leia. “The M-68s,” Leia read aloud as she inserted it into the player. “That’s the name of a speeder, right?”
“The best in the galaxy. Or it was, awhile back.”
The music started; more raucous Corellian ballads, similar to what they’d listened to before. The first song seemed to be an ode to the band’s namesake.
Han leaned back on his arms, his eyes distant, as if he were picturing the speeder right in front of him in all its glory. “Powerful, variable thrusters… modifiable 289-hirep repulsorlift generator… sleek, beautiful lines….” he whistled. “Every street racer worth their stuff on Corellia wanted one. But by the time I finally got my hands on one—”
“Wait, you were a street racer?” She leaned forward, intrigued.
Han shrugged. “Yeah, when I had the time. I built a speeder of my own. Raced it a couple of times. Did pretty damn well, considering that I had to steal every minute with it right from under Lady Proxima’s oily nose.”
“Lady Proxima?”
“Head of the White Worms. Horrible being. I, uh, worked for her for awhile.”
Leia raised her eyebrows.
“All right, smuggled. Stole things. All sorts of illegal hijinks. Happy now? Not that I had much of a choice. I was just a kid trying to survive.”
Leia’s expression grew softer. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean—”
Han made a dismissive sound in his throat. “Eh, don’t worry about it. I suppose being an Alderaanian princess didn’t give you much experience with underground cartels.” Leia opened her mouth in defense, but Han beat her to it. “And that’s good. I’m glad you didn’t have to deal with ‘em.”
“We had some underground illegal activity, but nothing like the cartels on other worlds,” Leia conceded. “And you’re right, I never had much experience dealing with them directly.” She paused, searching his face. His eyes were focused elsewhere. Was he ashamed? “Tell me about it,” she said gently. “Help me understand.”
Han considered for a moment, then sat up, fiddling with his holster. “The White Worms were the biggest gang in Coronet. Controlled the black market there. Any kid on the streets desperate enough eventually ended up with them.” He paused, his distaste palpable. “Easy to get in, not so easy to get out.”
Leia shuddered.
“It was better than being alone on the streets, though. We at least had a steady source of food.” He shrugged, then stopped speaking. Leia guessed he was hoping that would be the end of it. Despite her curiosity, she felt it was unwise to press him too hard just yet, so she went back to the subject beloved by the gritty, spirited anthem still belting from the datacard player.
“You said you were able to get your hands on an M-68?”
Han let out a wry chuckle. “Didn’t have it for long. It’s, uh… it’s actually what helped me escape. Nabbed it on the streets; crashed it the same day trying to shake off the White Worms. It got us almost all the way to the spaceport before that though.”
Leia listened intently. This was exactly what she had been hoping for; a more concrete glimpse into his past. Still, even this story seemed to hint at so much more that he was leaving unsaid. She wondered what kind of horrors he had gone through that had led up to that desperate decision to escape. She wondered what the White Worms would have done if they had caught him. She wondered what “us” meant.
“So is that why this band means so much to you?”
“Yeah, I guess. That, and street racing. And flying.”
Leia nodded. “Things you’ve always had a passion for.”
“Yeah. I dunno, I guess it feels like I was born to do those things. Being in the driver’s seat of a speeder or the pilot’s seat of a ship….” He shrugged again. “It’s me. ’S who I am.”
Leia snuggled against his side as the next song came on, this one a joyous exposition on the thrills of speeding. “I like who you are,” she said, kissing his cheek. Han looked down at her, affected; the guarded vulnerability in his eyes melting away into a softening joy. He leaned down and kissed her.
It is a common misconception among Americans that selling a home is an especially difficult task. While it is not always easy, if you have the advice of a professional, or you follow helpful tips like these you will find that it is not as difficult as you might think.
You're putting your house on the market. Great!! First piece of advice is to listen to your Realtor, who knows all about the local Real Estate market. If you don't have one, or want to do it yourself, then the first thing you need to do is to clean up!! Get rid of junk and clutter. Rent a storage unit if you need to. You have to pretend that it's not yours anymore. Good luck!
If you're trying to sell your house, keep your pets away. Before showings, take the dog or cat to a friend's house, put away pet toys and bowls, and remove any appearance of a litter box. Many a potential buyer has been turned off by the smell/sight of a homeowners furry best friend.
Before you decide to sell your house without the help of an agent, ask yourself whether you will be able to achieve levels of exposure comparable to those offered by agents. Agents will list a home with the local Multiple Listing Service, or MLS, which is seen by the entire network of real estate agents in the area. Instead of having only one agent working for you, you are harnessing the selling power of many different agents.
Make sure to create the proper atmosphere for a showing. Turn on all the lights, have some relaxing music playing in the background, and light a few candles to make the home smell nice. You might also want to include a thank you note at one of the last rooms that they would look at. This will help the potential buyer enjoy looking at your home and make the buyer just feel more relaxed.
Making your house stand out from the rest is an important component in any sales plan. In this article, we have discussed some tips to help you along the way. Discuss them with your Realtor, and follow them when you're putting your house on the market. The reward could be a SOLD sign in your yard, quicker than you expected.
Currently a wide variety of fiberglass fabrics is available in the market. However, they can be categorized into premium special purpose fibers and low cost general purpose fibers. Among products available in the latter category, the fiberglass fabric market is expected to witness significantly rising demand for E-glass fibers. These fibers have a high strength and ensures improved chemical and corrosion resistance. Furthermore, e-glass fibers are heat resistance and are available in economic prices as compared to glass fabrics in the special purpose category. The increasing knowledge about its attributes will fuel the demand for e-glass fiber in the coming years. The demand for special purpose fibers is likely to rise as well. These fibers offer several mechanical and physical qualities, which will fuel their demand in the coming years.
A key point to consider here is that, fiberglass fabric is manufactured like any other fabric either in a woven or non-woven form. Furthermore, these fabric can be woven in myriad patterns such as basket weave, plain weave, twill weave, and complicated weaves.
Fiberglass fabric is increasingly used in defense and aerospace applications. They are used in manufacturing various cabins structures such as luggage bins, bulkheads, seats, and wall panels. They are also used in honeycomb structures. Furthermore, the increasing application in electrical and electronics industry in printed circuit boards, switches, cable generators, and transformers, besides several others will give significant impetus to the global fiberglass fabric market.
Global Fiberglass Fabric Market: Overview
The demand within the global market for fiberglass fabric has been rising on account of the utility served by these fabrics across multiple industries. There are mainly two categories of glass fibers, one being the special fibers with premium quality, and the other is the general fiber which is more popularly used across industries. Special purpose fibers are better in quality as they contain ECR-glass, S-glass, silica fibers, S-glass, hollow fibers, and trilobal fibers. Despite the enhanced quality of special-purpose fibers, the demand for e-glass fibersis higher because they endow chemical and corrosion resistance, high strength, and heat resistance. The mechanical and physical properties of fiberglass are amongst the key reasons behind the growth of the global market for fiberglass fabric. Several research organisations have been focusing on finding the uses of fiberglass in various industrial domains, and this is projected to further escalate demand within the global market for fiberglass fabrics.
Last day in the Sri
Our flight was cancelled so we got rebooked to an earlier red eye to Hong Kong which means that last night was our last night in Sri Lanka.
We get up super early ( 5:45) so we have time to get packed, eat breakfast and meet the morning train to Columbo. Breakfast is served in the garden and feel a little like a scene from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. In our way to the train station, we pass the central square of the fort and there are 11 wedding parties at 6:40am, taking wedding pictures. Only one bride is in white, many in rose gold and many in “country” wedding attire which is more like a costume. Men wear a black velvet outfit with ornate gold embellishments, shoulder pads, and jodhpurs type pants. It’s quite a sight!
We arrive at the train station and the train is already full to the gills so we wait for the next one. It’s a morning commuter train so it’s standing room only. We rush the train to get on and about half of us get seats.
Tumblr media
We finagle a few more after the first spot but it really is a push, shove situation. And we have 2nd class tickets! The upside is that the rail line runs along the ocean for most of the journey so it’s a pretty nice ride.
Arriving in Columbo is like arriving in any Asian city. It’s growing exponentially, we see beggars for the first time ( and only 1 or 2). Columbo is building a number of huge 5 star hotels and because the city is running out of space, they are in the process of “reclaiming” the land from the ocean by pumping in sand and rock. It’s a joint project with China which will see China get the land lease for 99 years. China has also been super friendly to the Sri Lankan’s and built them an Opera House and convention center....as gifts. I let you form your own opinion of that one!
A quick city tour, a stop for real coffee and a visit to an ethical trade shop, we stop for lunch at the Sri Lankan version of a food court. There’s a Pizza Hut but everything has chili’s or curries as toppings ( not kidding) and then three or 4 restaurants that look the the Chinese food section of the food court. But they have nasi goring, devil chicken, squid and fried eggs instead. And stuff is served either on a huge round silver tray that is sectioned or on a bamboo tray covered in a lotus leaf.
Powell orders noodles which is actually squid and we share the nasi goring.
It’s finally late enough to check into our hotel and we get a couple hours to explore before our final dinner. Powell and I want to see the Red Mosque up close and the crazy market streets that surround it.
Tumblr media
Full disclosure- we barely slept the night before waiting to hear about our flight, then we had the early train and now it’s 1:30 in the afternoon with searing heat and roughly 99% humidity. We walk about 15 min through the insanity that is traffic here, having to cross 2 major roads with no lights or crosswalks ( follow a local) and arrive at the mosque. On our way, every single male wants to talk to Powell and give him a tour or a tuk tuk ride. Once he starts, he gets 60 seconds then I take part in the Powell Jones Abandonment program and begin to walk away. Best advice for the big city- say no thanks once and disengage. Or be prepared to have a tail , your choice!
When we get to the Mosque it really is spectacular. This part of Columbo is very Muslim and many of the woman here are covered head to toe, hands included, in black.
We find a guy making fresh “potato” chips which turn out to be cassava. He puts this spice on them and they are soooo good ( and only 50 rupees a bag).
Tumblr media
We munch away, throwing caution to the wind and eat the street food as we walk about the busy market. Eventually the heat and humidity win and we trek back to the room for showers and naps.
Final dinner with our crew and now we are at the airport. Tried to upgrade but their machines will not take our credit cards. They threw mercy on us and gave us a bulkhead because Powell is a giant and everyone feels kinda bad for him ( not bad enough to comp us the emergency seats but bad enough to chase us down in the airport to give us a little more leg room. #CathayPacificforthewin
