It’s the 40th anniversary of ‘Hokuto No Ken’ (Fist Of The North Star) by Buronson & Tetsuo Hara!
Making its debut on September 13, 1983 in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 41!
The prototype for the series was published months prior in Fresh Jump magazine. It was popular among readers according to a survey and was later serialized in WSJ.
It’s such an iconic series and has influenced so many over the decades.

In 1991, Kentaro Miura and Buronson collaborated on a manga called Japan. Buronson wrote the story while Miura illustrated it.
Japan is about a yakuza boss named Katsuji Yashima that gets transported to the post-apocalyptic future where Japanese people are refugees.
At first, Yashima appears like this. Typical hulking mafia man with neat slicked-back hair.
After he is trapped in the desert along with the other misplaced people he traveled with, his appearance changes.
Look familiar?
He even rides a horse.
Don't talk to him until he's had his gasoline.
Katsuji Yashima is basically Mad Max Guts. What an amazing collaboration between two manga legends.

REVIEW | "Fist of the North Star" - Vol. 5 | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade
I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: Fist of the North Star is a marvel to read! For a manga that was released nearly forty years ago, the story of Kenshiro still outshines most modern-day shonen series. It leads me to wonder if shonen manga — like Japanese fashion — peaked in the eighties, as one cannot find a single flaw in Buronson and Tetsuo Hara’s tale of violent redemption! But in its fifth volume, we’ve finally found a weakness within Kenshiro himself.
Before that’s brought to light, Kenshiro still has to save his brother Toki in the fearful prison of Cassandra. Going face-to-face with the warden Uyghur, Kenshiro takes every lashing that the tough guy fishes out. As usual, with every hit Kenshiro takes, he throws it back at his enemies tenfold! It of course results in a bloody display of artful violence, with gore that’s as pretty as a rose on a summer’s day.
There’s no time to slow down when Toki is rescued, as the dreaded Kenoh heads to the village to lay waste to those Kenshiro has already saved. But our hero already has a plan put into place to take care of Kenoh. For you see, Kenshiro knows this villain all too well. I mean, he should, seeing as he’s actually his brother Raoh!

Review: "Fist of the North Star, Volume 1" by Buronson, Art by Tetsuo Hara
Review: “Fist of the North Star, Volume 1” by Buronson, Art by Tetsuo Hara
Quick review for a quick read. So this is my chance to kind of gush over a classic manga series that I’ve known about for many years because of the anime, but this is my first time revisiting the series in quite some time. When I saw the first volume on NetGalley, you all have no idea how quickly I requested this. Cue in a massive happy dance when it came through.

*This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review.
Ken journeys to a prison called Cassandra; The City of Wailing Demons in search for his brother, Toki. To find him, Ken must face off against the twisted and cruel Warden Uyghur and we meet another brother of Ken’s, Raoh; who wants nothing more than to rule over everyone and it seems nobody is powerful enough to stop…
