I want to share a little bit about my time with Danganronpa V3, because I had what I would consider quite a unique experience with it. I think I owe my love of this game in part to how everything shaped out. There will be spoilers for the ending so be warned.
I played through the Danganronpa trilogy around 2020. I went in completely blind, so much so that on getting through the prologue of the first game I declared to my friends that I was going to go for a deathless run. It isn't that kind of series, I thought it was much more open ended rather than a concrete story. I'd enjoyed my time with 1 and 2, and was enjoying V3 even more. But then the game crashed. It was quite an unfortunate time for the crash, at the end of trial 4. I hadn't saved since the beginning of the trial, which would mean about 2 hours of gameplay solving a mystery I already knew to get back to where I was. Though I was willing, my computer saved me the trouble and for whatever reason could not load into the game anymore. I never finished V3.
What I did instead was watch a no commentary playthrough of chapters 5 and 6 on youtube. I missed out on the gameplay of the trials and I couldn't choose the free time events I invested in, but it was a solid alternative. There was a certain disconnect though. Even though Shuichi isn't by any means a blank slate protagonist, the fact that I wasn't making the active decision to engage with each conversation did take me out of the story enough to where I was just viewing it, not partaking in it. Those of you who know the ending may see where I'm going with this.
On first watch I was thoroughly disappointed with the ending of this game. The reveal of the entire game franchise being a series of games and anime in-universe felt strange, I didn't like how the characters handled this confrontation that they are a work of fiction. I didn't like the meta-ness of the whole thing. I wanted the characters to do something, anything.
I was the audience.
I was the audience that in game was chiming in with complaints about the state of the game. "This is getting way too meta", "Just kill each other already". My frustrations with the ending were being echoed back at me from the group that is, at the very least according to the game, in the wrong. And after I got through the final trial and the epilogue, I sat on how I felt about the ending for a couple of weeks.
I think being forced to separate myself from these characters made a huge impact on the way I viewed the ending and, with the ending in mind, the entire game as a whole. And I eventually came to the conclusion that the game wants you to hate it. As someone with a vested interest in the story, knowing that these characters aren't real, you want not what's best for them, but what's the most entertaining or thought-provoking for you. You aren't meant to find the ending satisfying. It isn't a satisfying ending, in fact it isn't really an ending at all. And that's the point. These are real people suffering under horrifyingly inhumane conditions, and you're more concerned with the story? You don't deserve a story from them. They don't owe you a story. They deserve to live.
Ironically I think part of that is lost as a player rather than a spectator. Which is why my game crashing is the best thing that could have happened to me while playing V3. I owe a lot of my love for this game to that one hardware error.

I will always be a normal guy defender, I don't want vigilantes who always look like super models unless it makes sense for their characters (Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, Kori Anders). I want super-heros that look like the guy you could stumble on the supermarket. Your classmate. Your coworker. A random face in a ocean of people. Absolutely and completely forgetful unless you love them.
I want super-heros to take of their mask and the person be like "THAT'S JUST SOME GUY." their face leak and people be like "WHO 🗣️🗣️ THE FUCK IS THAT⁉️‼️‼️‼️🔥🔥" enough with conventionally attractive heros who look like bodybuilders more some heros who would be your Uber driver and you wouldn't pay attention to them twice.

i love how for a series with an almost completely non-male cast of characters splatoon feels so chill about gender presentation
callie is "the pink one" with long hair and an upbeat but sweet personality yet she wears shorts and pants almost all the time. pearl is loud and opinionated and aggressive but she wears dresses and her signature color is pink, and that's chill. marina is the more "traditionally feminine" one and she's kind and sweet and soft, but she's a genius who accelerated through school and she's an engineer who works with machines and builds weapons, and she wears shorts and pants and a pantsuit, and that's just who she is. shiver... whatever shiver has going on. even ignoring the pronoun confusion surrounding deep cut's reveal, i definitely agree that they just have. something androgynous going on with them, even though they seem very feminine-presenting. even fem eight, they have a crop top and a miniskirt and heels in octo expansion, but they also get to wear a jumpsuit in side order, along with of course rocking the single earring, which even masc eight gets to keep. and of course, acht - even though they're "the non-binary character", they still wear a dress! they still have earrings! they still have long hair! they don't have to be masculine to be non-binary - they still get to present traditionally feminine, and it doesn't cancel out their identity at all!
man. i love this game and this series so much. no wonder it attracts such a queer fandom lol

I know Egon's spirit has passed on and all that
but imagine he was still hanging around (incorporeal though) with his family, playing chess with Pheobe, giving Trevor the tools he needs when fixing the car, giving Callie hugs and using tech to 'talk' to her, being annoying and making life inconvenient when they are trying to move because they forgot to pack up with spores, moulds, and fungi to bring to the firehouse
(god what I wouldn't pay for ghost egon to finally be able to punch dickless without much/any repercussions)

You know, I think Marie winning the Callie vs Marie splatfest in the first game was the objectively right descision because can you imagine living in a world were Callie wasn't serving cunt in the splatoon 2 final boss fight?

chat … i have an idea for rewriting s2 hero mode …
the objectives will be the same- save callie and return the zapfish. however , you play as marie for the first sector . in the first 10 levels , you’re training a new agent (agent 4 entry !!) , and you two play side-by side. great way to get us closer to agent 4 and marie as characters !!
Tumblr media
then add a boss fight where it’s impossible to beat, marie gets kidnapped and agent 4 has to complete the objectives by themself . make the sunken scrolls about the squid sisters relationship and what happened in between !! show how the effects of the zapfish abduction was worse than the og game !! make us see exactly what we’re fighting for !!
i would love the ending to be an oe or s3 type boss where there’s multiple stages of blowing through some concert where octavio is about to attack inkopolis with his BEATS ‼️‼️🔥🔥 make agent 4 free marie !! make them fight octavio and free callie together !! make them reunite so emotionally and prove to us that agent four is completely capable as an agent !!
(you can tell im still disappointed about splatoon 2)

I find Marie’s body language in Return of the Mammalians really interesting because I can use it as Momrie propaganda BECAUSE it’s a really great physical representation of a side of her personality we don’t get to see that much in the game.
There are only a couple of instances this can be applied to in Return of the Mammalians but because I’m bored and desperate, I can stretch it to three, with a fourth scene where I think it could be improved.
Hold on to your tentacles! You’re probably going to think I’m insane after this.
I can’t believe you actually want to read this.
So, the first example I have AND the one that inspired me to write this mess is the scene during the construction of the uh, the machine thingy (does it have a name?) where Callie leaps at Marie to hug her in celebration of completing their task. And I MEAN leaps. We can’t see the whole of their bodies but judging by the suddenly acquired height difference, Callie is completely off the ground at this point. Given that the scene ends in a freeze frame, we don’t see the full force or speed of the hug-tackle either, but what’s clear is that Marie is prepared for it. Just to give myself a bit of focus because I have NO idea where I’m going with this; if the Marie-is-a-Horrible-Cousin Truthers whose splatoon knowledge ends like 6 years ago are correct, wouldn’t Marie have gone ‘Ew. UGH. CAL *hair flip* why are you TOUCHING me?’ or something? Or at the very least be completely unprepared to catch her? And that’s the thing! She doesn’t just hug her back - she CATCHES her. As shown by this here low quality image vv
Tumblr media
Marie’s arms come up under Callie’s in a scooping motion. She is fully aware of her cousin’s physical recklessness and is completely prepared to catch her and keep her safe. I mean, the fact that Callie trusts her enough to just… fling herself at her is telling enough.
Alrighty. Next point GO!!
After Cuttlefish (I don’t like calling him that. Let’s call him Craig) after Craig gets Sucked Dry by That Bear, the Squid Sisters seem… mildly concerned, which is probably to keep the upbeat and comedic feel of the game while sacrificing a little emotional realism (coming back to this later!), but after they see he’s fully conscious and capable of floating by himself for some reason (?) everything’s Suddenly Fine Again. Except the world being in immediate danger, obviously. But here’s the thing (did I say that already? Well, there are 2 things)! For the remaining portion of the game this side of the end credits, Marie is just… holding Craig. As afore mentioned though, he can float. She doesn’t NEED to be holding him but she just is. Whether that’s because she’s happy to see her grandfather safe or whether something inside her soggy little brain saw something smaller than herself and told her to protect it is a mystery, but either way, that is some quality… body language… there…(again, lost my point. Weirdly, whenever I think about someone being held by Marie, I seem to lose focus. Huh.)
Anyway, here’s a picture of Marie holding Craig. Look at how she’s trying to engage him in something he could easily be left out of. Does this image not bring you joy???
Tumblr media
Moving on briefly from all the Marie-talk, let’s talk a little Callie. I’m honestly thrilled about what they did with Callie’s body language in this game. She’s full of energy and quite hands-on, which is exactly how I expected her to be, even though this is pretty much the first time we see her physically interact with other characters in the entire Splatoon series. It just feels right.
It completely makes sense that Callie would spend the majority (why did that just autocorrect to Major Titty. Why.) of the pre-boss cutscene literally hanging off Marie’s arm, and the awesome thing about that is that Marie doesn’t pull away or look irritated by her cousin’s constant GRIPPING and SHAKING of her arm at all. I don’t know about you, but if I had someone attached to me like that while I was trying to think of a master plan, I’d be pretty annoyed. Unless, of course, it was Callie. I’m getting off track again here. My point WAS that Marie is so, so chill. I hate it when people try to portray her as angsty because she just… isn’t.
What all this body language shows is that Marie is a supportive, nurturing well of patience and ANYONE THAT SAYS OTHERWISE WILL BE FED TO THE BEASTS.
Which is WHY I think that during the scene where Craig is slightly rehydrated by the Captain’s tear, it would make way much more sense to have Marie reach out a hand to touch the Captain’s shoulder, or at least do something other than freezing there with an expression reminiscent of a damp, shocked cat. Now that Nintendo seems to have got their act together a little in terms of cutscenes, it would be nice to have more examples of characters (Marie. Marie is characters) using their body language to visually convey the finer points of their personality which may have been overlooked by some people *cough cough* Marie Trut-💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
Struggling to find the point of this ‘argument’? So am I. What even is this? I’m not reading it back before I post it, that’s for sure. Gnight.

pov you're callie sadecki you openly lie for your mother to the police abt her murder cover up of the man she cheated on and bc you are so emotionally cut off from her any slight tinge of approval is like a thousand warm hugs straight to the gut and this whole time she does not love you she never even wanted you she doesnt even LIKE you and you're not truly aware of this, she's never said it explicitly to you, but you feel it everytime you get in a fight or she looks at you across the dinner table and this doesn't even stop you from still seeking her love so badly that you keep lying and lying to the police to save her bc in doing so its tricking you into thinking 'my mother loves me. my mother is proud of me' and you wake up to your childhood toy tucked into your arms the way she used to do it and its something

overheard someone saying "bjir" in real life
okay first indonesian context. sorry to any indos reading this if this has mistakes. bjir is a misspelling of njir. which is a shortenend form of anjir which comes from "anjing", the word for dog.
njir is an interjection word that is similar to "fuck". its a curse word of the same level of informality. depending on the context it can also mean "holy fuck" like when you see something cool.
anyways whats important is that, "bjir" is a keyboard misspelling of "njir". its misspelled this way because n and b is next to each other on the prevalent qwerty layout. and the interesting part to me is that it is said out loud.
could keyboard misspelling be something that could start sounds changes? sound changes that never happened before? because the person wouldnt have said that naturally without keyboard misspelling right? b and n are like phonologically opposites. hmmm
