A Ghost Story for Christmas: Count Magnus (2022)

"Yes?"
"A visit? It would be so helpful for my researches."
"Certainly. It is in the care of the church in the next village. I shall have a word with the deacon."
"Ah, now that must have been him I saw earlier."
"I beg your pardon?"
"Well, I saw someone. Standing on the steps, locking, or unlocking I suppose, the door. That must have been your deacon."
"Yes. It must have been."

Gatiss once again nests the story with a seemingly unknown narrator and pulls a few tricks here and there (including putting the#biggest and most shameless jumpscare not at the end of the play but right in the middle: i fair leaped out of my seat)#Watkins embodies the classic James protagonist; not a bad man nor a fool‚ but simply one given too freely to curiosity without due care#the style of this new run of plays is suitably painterly and richly drawn but if i had to make a criticism (or better stated‚ a comparison)#it's simply that they lack the original run's satisfaction in being simply very quiet and very still and letting the horror bleed out#regardless; Gatiss is too fond of eerie musical stings and floating camera work to allow the story to simply hang in the air for a moment#and breathe a chilly breath (something Clark was a master at). regardless this is excellent festive spookery and one of the xmas highlights

WTNV episode 46 has Everything!!
Possibly Old Woman Josie finally showing up behind one of the oak doors appearing around town after so many episodes of being gone.
All the oak doors to the desert wasteland and the tease of what is to come on the Dana storyline.
The Traffic segment: "Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not. We never are. But that's not the right question. The question is: Are we living a life that is worth the harm? We are all driving toward something. We are all driving away from something else. It is the simplicity of physics. The simplicity of free will."
CARLOS VOICE
Carlos gently telling Cecil to stop when Cecil was gushing about him.
Mayor Pamela Winchell and her neverending press conferences except TODAY she saw an ANGEL!!!
Angels are real!!!
Except they are not. But mountains may be.
Tamika Flynn and her militia finally beginning the revolution
The incredible Weather "Take Up Your Spade" by Sara Watkins
NOT A SINGLE CITIZEN SHOWING UP TO HELP TAMIKA
Tamika's line before being arrested: "Sad is not the land that has no hero. Sad is the land that needs a hero."
Cecil's banger speech at the end: "Not one citizen outside of Tamika and her band of brilliant, brave children stood up to tyranny today. We all chose to stand down and hope change would be won for us, and not by us. By someone else, we believed. A hero, we believed.
But belief is only step one. Action is step two. Fighting for what you believe  is step two. Solidarity is step two. Unity is step two. We did not take step two today, Night Vale. And now there will be no step three. We have failed Tamika, but worse, we have failed ourselves."
KEVIN'S RETURN
I will never be okay again.

WTNV Quick rundown - 46 - Parade Day -
Featuring Dylan Marron as the voice of Carlos the Scientist~
Act natural. Act like all of nature. Act like the entire cycle of life and death and change and rebirth. Welcome to Night Vale.
There is no actual 'parade' in this episode. Cecil uses the idea of a parade as code for a secret meeting between Tamika Flynn and anyone else who wants to help overthrow StrexCorp. He continues to speak in code, whilst tapping out the location and time of the meeting on his desk, as to try and conceal that Tamika will be there planning to enact her helicopter based rebellion strike. He's not particularly good at this.
There is also some code weaved into the traffic report about getting to the 'parade day' location, which is probably more well coded that the introductory attempts Cecil made.
The coding is dropped as the revolt takes place outside of the Strexcorp headquarters. Despite their commandeered helicopters and best attempts, Tamika Flynn (13 here) and her band of armed teenagers are captured and put into the before unused juvenile detention centre which has sat empty for years because of the 'specially-calibrated school lunches' formulated by the Night Vale Psychological Association.
Cecil barricaded himself into his studio during this time and locked Daniel in his control booth. Daniel 'throws chairs and yanks cables out of the wall' which does nothing as Cecil is broadcasting from his own equipment. He remarks that anyone could have come to help the kids but didn't and that's on them and they should have (he includes himself in this shame). His barricade, which is just cardboard signs saying 'Keep Out!' and 'Secret Room' is easily bypassed by Lauren who has brought Kevin with her also. They cut Cecil off before he can properly finish his show.
Weather: "Take Up Your Spade" by Sara Watkins, sarawatkins.com
Carlos reports that the doors on the house which doesn't exist have changed into Old Oak Doors. This has allowed them to properly enter the desert otherworld, instead of the house of a woman named Cynthia.
He says that if there is nobody on the other side to open the door for you, then you can't get back out again. He also says that when Rochelle (another scientist) went in for a few minutes, she claimed she was actually there several hours and was so hungry she ate all of the kolaches Dave (another scientist) made for them. They plan to do more experiments of a similar nature by having Carlos himself go inside. Cecil urges Carlos to be careful, but Carlos says that he'll be fine because he has 5 talented scientists with him.
Pamela Winchell calls another press conference, but this time about something important. An Old Oak Door appeared before her and when she opened it she was greeted by an angel. She insists that angels are real but is made to correct herself and say that they aren't.
Tomás Perez, head of Perez Accounting, said an old oak door appeared overnight in his office. When he opened it (because it was in the same place as the supply closet) he saw several men and women standing in a bright desert hellscape holding swords and sticks and even a few rifles. One of the figures put a finger to her lips, shook her head "NO" and then another reached to slowly close the door without breaking eye contact with him.
Claire Wallace (freelance photographer) sent in photos of a door that appeared in the empty lot across from the Rec Center. In one photo the door is open and there is an elderly woman putting up a sign that reads "Future Home of The Old Night Vale Opera House." In another photo she is walking toward the door, face unseen in both photos. In the last photo the door is shut and she is gone. Cecil says he can see the words "Josefina Contractors Inc" in small print across the bottom of the sign. (HO-seh-fee-nah)
Juanita Jefferson, head of neighbourhood improvement organization Night Vale or Nothing, said an old oak door appeared in her backyard. On one side she could see the door and it's brass knob, on the other side there just wasn't a door at all. When she opens it from it's visible side, she saw a vast, sandy wasteland and nearby mountains. Atop one of the mountains was a lighthouse. She said she couldn't see any trees. "Treeeeees," she said sadly. "They are us," she added, waving her hand lazily in the air as if to shoo away a very slow bee.
Lauren and Kevin are described as having white teeth, pink lips, eyes full but tight and deep dimples 'making their tiny noses into parenthetical asides.' They are quotes as smiling but clearly not happy. (At least, as Cecil sees them).
During the episode, there is morse code playing which incites NV citizens to rebel.
Here are a couple of my fave quotes from this one: "[But] belief is only step one. Action is step two. Fighting for what you believe  is step two. Solidarity is step two. Unity is step two." , "Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not. We never are. But that's not the right question. The question is: Are we living a life that is worth the harm?"
Perhaps it is time to sign off for the day. I am sure to speak to you again very soon, listeners. Stay tuned next for the gentle sounds of forgiveness and a lilting melody of wounds healing. And until next time, Good Night, Night Va- Hey. Hey. No. What are you-
Proverb: If you love something, set it free. If it starts flying around and chirping, it was probably a bird.

Aston Villa chase 50k-p/w forward who Thierry Henry loves
Aston Villa have made contact to try and poach a Premier League forward this summer as they seek cover for Ollie Watkins, it has emerged. Aston Villa busy ahead of new season Unai Emery’s side have been one of the busiest in the Premier League since confirming their place in the Champions League for the 2024/25 campaign, with plenty of business both in and out of the Midlands club. Eight new faces have arrived at Villa Park, headed by Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen, but there have been significant departures too. Douglas Luiz has joined Juventus in a deal worth a reported £43m, while the club also cashed in on Moussa Diaby just 12 months on from his arrival in the midlands, joining Al-Ittihad in a deal worth £50m. Aston Villa’s new signings (summer 2024) Player Fee Amadou Onana £50m Ian Maatsen £37m Cameron Archer £14m Jaden Philogene £13.5m Lewis Dobbin £8m Samuel Iling-Junior £11.8m + add-ons Enzo Barrenechea £6.7m + add-ons Ross Barkley £5m There is likely to be more movement too, with Diego Carlos having been told he can find a new club, while West Ham have been locked in talks over striker Jhon Duran. The Colombian striker is expected to depart the club this summer amid previous interest from Chelsea, though talks with the Hammers have reportedly stalled and led to Julen Lopetegui’s side exploring deals for other targets. Should Duran depart, Villa will be in the market for an alternative to Ollie Watkins, who scored 19 times in the Premier League last season. Now, they appear to be exploring a deal for just that. That comes with one report revealing that Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has been placed on Villa’s list of potential striker options. The French striker enjoyed a fantastic end to the 2023-24 campaign, becoming just the second Frenchman to net in seven consecutive Premier League home games after Thierry Henry, who he has been working with over the summer as part of the French Olympic team. The legendary Premier League striker was quick to praise his charge too, hailing him as a throwback striker. “He’s an old-fashioned striker, you can play a little more direct. He can keep the ball,” Henry explained. “He’s a boring striker to play against, he doesn’t lose the ball much, and he goes at the last defender. “He uses his physicality, he’s good with his head, and he scores. It’s important that a striker like that gives you another dimension.” Related Villa still keen on signing £55m “monster” who plays like Fabian Ruiz Unai Emery is still keen on landing a long term target this summer… But the striker has just two years left on his current £50,000 a week deal at Selhurst Park, and has yet to agree fresh terms amid a desire to play Champions League football. As per the Daily Express, Villa are ready to offer him that and though talks are not advanced, the Villans “have made contact” with Mateta’s camp. It is added that they are considering a bid to “test the waters over the coming weeks”, though no fee for the forward is mentioned. Should he be able to continue his excellent form from the second half of the 23/24 campaign, he could prove a more than capable backup for Ollie Watkins. Source link via The Novum Times

Unbelievable Play by Los Angeles Rams Defensive Newcomer Turns Tide of the Game
Three days after officially signing with the Los Angeles Rams, Carlos Watkins was in uniform and ready to take the field. And it didn’t take long for the former 2017 4th-round pick to make his presence felt. The Rams are no strangers to throwing a player into the mix shortly after their arrival. Famously, in 2022, Baker Mayfield led the team on a game-winning drive less than 48 hours after…

An interesting look at a criminal organization no necessarily organized, a raw slice of life piece if independent structure and I feel well paced for it’s low budget. I recommend to see.

More Live Music
Nancy and I managed to last three hours today at the Sunday edition of the 39th Annual Tucson Folk Festival. We got to see some of The Jane Heirs, Carlos Arzate & the Kind Souls, Mark Insley & the Broken Angels, Sophia Rankin & the Sound, the Out of Kilters, and Ron Pandy & the Wild Pitch Band.
There were other performances both Saturday and Sunday we would have liked to have seen, but we just couldn't stick around long enough or run back and forth to different stages quickly enough to manage that large a selection.
There have been a lot of wonderful acts at the Tucson Folk Festival over the years. Eliza Gilkyson, Tish Hinojosa, Asleep at the Wheel, the Austin Lounge Lizards, Richie Havens, Watkins Family Hour, Ray Wylie Hubbard, David Bromberg, Chris Hillman, Pokey LaFarge, Guy Clark, and many, many more.
Every year since 1986—except for 2020, when it was cancelled due to COVID—the festival has featured multiple stages of music in traditional, contemporary, and cultural genres. It has grown to be Arizona’s largest free music festival and annually attracts more than 20,000 fans and talented performers from all over Southern Arizona and across the country. I have been fortunate to attend many of the festivals over the years.
I joked with some people that we might just come back to Tucson for the Folk Festival every year. One person mentioned that Eugene has a good music community, so we look forward to exploring that once we get settled.
