I wonder if people's preferences for destiel or for wincest (taboo/ick aside) have anything to do with their interpretation of Dean as a character.

I think Dean occupies very different roles in each of those ships. Explanation below.

Explanation of Dean's characterization and relationship dynamics under the cut:

Destiel:

Cas pulled Dean out of hell and watches over Dean so he is the protector and Dean is the protected. He is a literal angel so he is in a position of relative power. However, he rebelled for Dean so Dean unwittingly holds more power over Cas' heart. Dean hates himself and sees himself as a monster, but Cas thinks that he is the most beautiful, pure, loving human in the world.

Wincest:

Dean is the big brother who always took care of his baby brother, so Dean is the protrctor and Sam is the protected. Their upbringing and age difference gave them a dynamic which places Dean in a position of relative power. But Dean would do anything for Sam and give him anything he wants. Between Sam and Dean, I think Sam is the more likely one to see himself as innately wrong and unclean. But Dean still thinks he's perfect. Nothing will ever dilute or corrupt Dean's love for Sam.

as much as i love sam knowing about destiel before dean does, there's something about "i mean yeah my brother and his angel best friend are really weird about each other, live together, co-parent a kid, nearly kill themselves every time the other is gone, stand too close and stare at the other's mouth while they talk, but i mean to each their own i guess??" that's so special to me
