Thank you very much to anon for your donation to Hala's Gofundme! Fun fact: the chestnut-breasted mannikin (Lonchura castaneothorax) is also known as the "barley bird" due to their fondness for foraging in barley fields.

White-headed Munia (or Mannikin)…probably….we know there are several similar species that can’t be distinguished from the back…it’s the bird upper left, wings out; Chestnut-breasted Mannikin (upper middle); Tri-colored Munia (or Mannkin) probably…upper right middle…that’s as closes as I can come to it, a “variant” morph…they buffy area is usually, but not always, white; Red-cheeked Cordon-Bleu (blue bird, right); I can’t remember the name of the brightly coloured bird in the water, nor the other below it…I’ll look when I have more time…I know I’ve seen both; and finally, Bronze-winged Mannikin, or Munia, lower right.

since i actually have the capacity for #long term goals these days, i put together a list of birds i haven't seen that i could feasibly either see in my area or w a little travel

african pygmy goose, green barbet (pipe dream probably), red-fronted tinkerbarbet, greater spotted + common + emerald + black cucko, green malkoha, african grass + marsh + scops owl, bronze-naped pigeon, lemon dove (literally nothing lemon about it), african rail, african purple swamphen, greater painted snipe, pied avocet, african cuckoo hawk, bearded vulture (will have to travel to the drakensberg for this one but it's a Big Deal to me), yellow-billed egret, eurasian + little bittern, black-crowned + white-back night heron, abdim's stork (will have nailed all the s. african storks when i see this one), african broadbill, grey + black cuckooshrike, drakensberg rockjumper, yellow-streaked greenbul, dark-capped yellow warbler, bush blackcap, chestnut-vented tit babbler, levaillant's cisticola, orange ground thrush (PLEASE), white-starred robin (PLEASE), brown scrub-robin, gurney's sugarbird, purple-banded sunbird, white-browed sparrow weaver, yellow weaver, african quailfinch, orange-breasted waxbill, green twinspot (i have this ticked off but i literally have no recollection of it), magpie mannikin, mountain wagtail, yellow wagtail, rosy-throated longclaw, cape + forest + brimstone canary, drakensberg siskin, cape bunting, ruddy turnstone, little stint

It was hard to get an individual photo of one but they did pose for a group photo on the fence for me.

The Chestnut-breasted Mannikin is a thick-set brown finch with a grey crown, black face and a heavy grey bill.
