So,
June is Filipino Heritage Month.
In Canada, where Filipinos have been among the most reliably numerous immigrants in the past few decades, the date was chosen to commemorate the country's Independence Day in 1898. That's when they freed themselves from hundreds of years of Spanish colonization.
If I'm being honest, I knew very little about the Philippines before I married my wife Kristina. When I was a teenager I sponsored a young Filipino boy named Nestor through an international charity, and when I was in the Yukon I wrote an article for the Whitehorse Star about the positive impact Filipino immigrants were having on the local economy. I also read a great novel by Alex Garland called The Tesseract that was set in Manila, but other than that I've been woefully ignorant about my family's origins.
Last year my father-in-law introduced me to Jo Koy, a Filipino stand up comic known for his racy, hyper-sexualized content. One of the most interesting things I learned from him is that there is a close kinship between Mexico and the Philippines, both in religious sensibilities (Catholic) and in basic culture. They're rebellious, hot-headed and considered "crazy" by their more conservative neighbours. He claimed this was due to them both being conquered by the Spanish, then rejecting some elements of their culture while embracing others. It makes for an interesting hodge-podge.
I was interested to learn, from a quick Google search, that the Philippines didn't truly become independent in 1898 — they spent another half century under American rule, only finally becoming free following the Second World War. When I teach Kris and Celista about the Philippines, it will be important for them to understand the devastatingly negative impact of colonization and why it's important to recognize the Indigenous culture that was suppressed and nearly wiped out, just like in Canada.
One of the most shocking elements of Filipino history was the introduction of "human zoos" which were open as recently as 1958 in places like New York City and London. It was there that racialized people from a variety of origins were kept in cages and gawked at by their western oppressors. In 1904, Americans displayed Filipino tribespeople in zoos like this during the Summer Olympics. Just another reminder that humans are sometimes disgusting to each other, and it really wasn't that long ago that deeply entrenched racism dictated the reality of many people's lives.
While my wife was growing up, she routinely experienced racism. Because she was half-Filipino and half-white, she didn't feel like she truly belonged in either category. A lot of attention was paid to her jet black hair, her sun-browned skin and ambiguous features. When people talk about white supremacy, this is what they mean: close attention to every difference, every physical detail of somebody's body, all scrutinized and held up against an Aryan ideal we haven't quite successfully shaken from our collective consciousness.
But there's also all the things I plan on teaching my kids about their heritage to give them pride in where they came from. They'll learn about the warrior Chief Lapu-Lapu, the Philippine Insurrection, and the villainous Rodrigo Duterte. They'll learn that the country is made up of seven thousand islands, with innumerable distinct cultures. And karaoke, I've learned, is extremely popular, just ask my mother-in-law! Also, once you start looking for them, there's plenty of Filipino celebrities who have achieved global success — including Vanessa Hudgens, Manny Pacquiao, Nicole Scherzinger and (my favourite) Bruno Mars.
One day Kristina and I will successfully take a trip to the Philippines, and I'm already stoked for the southeastern Asian sunshine. One of her relatives is a mayor (who was nearly assassinated!) and we have family scattered all throughout the islands, some of them in places without phone or Internet to connect them to the outside world. I can't wait to dive into the ocean, to see the tropical foliage and see firsthand the derelict weaponry abandoned there during World War Two.
I want the kids to walk those white sand beaches and know this country is part of their story, and always will be.

music to kill yr colonizers to.
Lapu-Lapu is widely known as a hero who opposed colonization by vanquishing Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521. Lapu Lapu was one of the two datus (chiefs) of the island of Mactan, near Cebu, in the Philippines, when Magellan arrived to the area.
In this context of rivalry between Rajah Humabon and Lapu Lapu came the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan as leader of the expedition later known as Magellan-Elcano, which would be the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe.
Upon his arrival in Cebu, Magellan forged an alliance with Rajah Humabon, who offered supplies and tribute in exchange for Magellan’s military force to subdue Lapu Lapu.
The expedition led by Magellan engaged in battle against Lapu Lapu on the island of Mactan combining the European soldiers with hundreds of Rajah Humabon’s warriors, but Lapu Lapu’s troops resisted in battle, rejected Rajah Humabon’s demands, and ended Magellan’s life.

Philippines Independence Day
Tumblr media
The Philippines consist of over 7,000 separate islands within the western Pacific have declared their independence from the Spanish rule about 120 years ago. General Emilio Aguinaldo was accountable for making the claim but it was not until 1962 that President Diosdado Macapagal had made it one public holiday by the presidential proclamation. The Philippine flag was open up for its initial time on June 12 of 1898 at a rousing celebration, which also marked the first ever public playing of their Philippines national anthem. This nation has made the best strides. It is deemed to be a rising market and the newly industrialized country. The tourism also makes the big impact on the economy of the Philippines.
WHEN IS THE PHILIPPINES INDEPENDENCE DAY?
The Philippines is celebrating their independence every June 12 yearly.
PHILIPPINES INDEPENDENCE DAY HISTORY
For more than 300 years, Philippines had been a Spanish colony, and had been named after the King of Spain, King Philip II. In year 1521, Ferdinand Magellan set down on the island of the Philippines and the claimed it for the Spain. Magellan wished every local chief to propose to the Spanish rules but a man, named Lapu Lapu turned it down. An attempt was then made by Magellan for crushing Lapu Lapu, but then he failed and he was the one being killed.
Then when Miguel Lopez de Legazpi headed an expedition in year 1565, the Spaniards then finally gained the footing in the Philippines. Then, they built the Intramuros City in 1571, which had been later renamed as Manila, and turned out to be the capital of this land. Finally, Spanish rule had take over, and the feudal system was then established— with bigger estates hold by the Spaniards, and Filipinos being the workers. These Spanish years brought wealth to the Philippines, the rule remained uneventful. It changed when Manila was captured by British in year 1762. Under the Treaty of Paris terms signed in year 1763, this city was then returned in year 1764.
19th Century
The feelings of nationalism happened to stir in 19th Century. This revolt grew with the assistance of Dr. Jose Rizal, the author that wrote the two novels of “The Filibusterer” (El Filibusterismo), and “Touch me Not” (Noli Me Tangere). These books caused the nationalism and sensation that spread like wildfire all throughout the Philippines. During 1892, Jose Rizal established the movement named as Liga Filipina, which is known for reform instead of revolution. As an outcome Rizal was arrested, then exiled to Dapitan at Mindanao.
The same with this, a more intense organization was created by Andres Bonifacio, named as Katipunan. The revolution started in 1896 of August, and then Jose Rizal was accomplished on December 30, 1896 right under the deceit of supporting a revolution, although he did not. The execution merely inflamed the opinion of Filipinos and the revolution grew.
And then the war between U.S. and Spain started in 1898. This Spanish fleet was beaten in Manila Bay by the Americans on 30th of April, 1898. Seizing this chance, Filipino revolutionaries then surrounded Manila, and the leader Emilio Aguinaldo affirmed the Philippines as an independent one on June 12. But, the American rule had take over when Emilio Aguinaldo was arrested in 1902.
20th Century
During the Americans leadership, the Philippines had created the commonwealth, and the semi-independent in year 1935. Literacy rate increased also as numerous American teachers were send out to the Philippines. Then, USA promised that Philippines would be totally independent in year 1945.
On 10th of December, 1941, Japan attacked the Philippines, and then captured Manila. The entire Philippines were at hands of Japan during that time. In October, 1944, the American troops go back to the Philippines and then recaptured Manila. Then the Philippines became an independent state on July 4, 1946. Then, Manuel Roxas became the first ever president of a newly independent nation.

Hauʻoli Makahiki Hou!
Tumblr media
Well,we made it through 2023,now we have to deal with 2024. It's going to be an election year,so here's some recipes to help you deal.
Tumblr media
Mix #113 Three Dots and a Dash
1.5oz agricole rhum 1/2oz gold rum 1/2oz honey syrup* 1/2oz lime juice 1/2oz orange juice 1/4oz velvet falernum 1/4oz allspice dram 1 dash Angostura bitters
Shake or flash blend with ice. Pour into mug and top with three cherries and a pineapple chunk speared on toothpick.
*Some versions use vanilla syrup.
The signature drink of Chicago's Three Dots and a Dash Tiki bar,the name is from Morse Code(stop trying to call it gmail-tap!) for the letter V. It was created by Donn the Beachcomber to celebrate the victory of the allies in Europe during World War II. It's a nice blend of sweet and citrus, with either a honey or vanilla finish.
Tumblr media
Mix #114 The Ancient Mariner
1oz Demerara rum 1oz blackstrap rum 3/4oz lime juice 1/2oz grapefruit juice 1/2oz Demerara syrup 1/4oz allspice dram
Shake with plenty of ice.
Another Beachbum Berry creation,it was so named because his team felt so old after going through the process of getting it just right. It's a super funky drink with a spice finish. If you don't have blackstrap rum,you can just use a funky Jamaican rum. It won't have as much funk, but will still taste good.
Tumblr media
Mix #115 Battle Stations
2oz rye whiskey* 3/4oz orange curacao 1/2oz velvet falernum 1/2oz grapefruit juice 1/2oz lime juice 1/2oz orgeat
Shake with ice and strain into glass with fresh ice.
*I used bourbon.
Created by Trader Brandon, and featured in his book,Mystic Libations, this was sent to me by a friend who saw it in his social media feed and wanted to know what I thought of it. Well,I'm not a whiskey/bourbon guy,but I knew I'd be bartending at the annual shop Xmas party,so I filed it away. I made a pair of these for my friend who doesn't like rum(I made him Honi Honi's last year) and he said they were delicious. So if you're looking for a non-rum Tiki drink, give this a try.
Tumblr media
Mix #116 Buccaneer's Bounty
1oz Navy rum 1oz dark rum 1/2oz Demerara 151 rum 1oz honey syrup 3/4oz grapefruit juice 3/4oz lime juice 1/2oz cinnamon syrup 2 dashes bitters
Shake with ice and strain into glass with fresh ice.
Another recipe from Mystic Libations(sadly sold out),this is a riff on the classic Navy Grog with cinnamon syrup. Sweet and cinnamon-y with a honey finish. And quite strong.
Tumblr media
Mix #117 Black Voodoo
2oz Demerara rum 2.4oz apple cider 3/4oz sweet vermouth 1/2oz lime juice 1/4oz Demerara syrup
Shake with plenty of ice and pour into skull themed mug.
My riff on the Voodoo. It's sweet and funky. I like to use Pusser's Gunpowder rum to give it some kick.
Mix #118 Hamilton Dry Float
3/4oz Hamilton Demerara 86 1/2oz Hamilton 151 3/4oz lime juice 3/4oz simple syrup* 1tsp passionfruit puree*
Shake everything except 151 with ice, strain into coupe glass, float 151 on top.
*I used Demerara simple and passionfruit syrup.
Not to be confused with the traditional dry float, this is Hamilton's riff using their rums. It has funk on the nose with a nice sweet/sour mix,and the 151 adds some kick. Quite good.
Tumblr media
Mix #119 Chief Lapu Lapu
1.5oz dark Jamaican rum 1.5oz white rum 3oz orange juice 1oz lime juice 1oz lemon juice 1oz passionfruit syrup 1oz simple syrup
Shake with plenty of ice and pour into glass.
This drink was a standard at many Tiki bars back in the day. There were many variations, but Beachbum Berry published this one in his book Remixed!. The name comes from the Datu(chief) who took out Magellan. You can read all about it here. Pretty much a tourist drink, very sweet and strong. Of course,I'm one to talk(see my Corsair Punch below),so if you like sweet and strong have at it.
Mix #120 Lapu Lapu
1oz light rum 1oz dark rum 2oz orange juice 1oz lemon juice 1oz passionfruit syrup 3/4oz vanilla syrup
Shake with plenty of ice and pour into glass.
BG Reynolds' more refined riff on the Chief Lapu Lapu. Sweet and vanilla-y,but not as sweet as the Chief. Also not as strong.
Mix #121 Quarantine Order
1.5oz aged dark Jamaican rum 1.5oz Navy strength Jamaican rum 1oz lime juice 1oz grapefruit juice 1/2oz passionfruit syrup 1/2oz cinnamon syrup 5 dashes Angostura bitters
Blend or shake with ice and pour into glass.
From Pagan Idol's William Prestwood,I believe this was intended to help cope with the fun that was 2020. Should work just as well for 2024. Sweet and fruity with a nice cinnamon burn at the end. Has a nice kick too.
Mix #122 Stack O Gold
2oz Puerto Rican gold rum 1oz Grand Mariner 3oz pineapple juice 1/2oz lemon juice 1/2oz orgeat
Shake with ice and pour into mug.
While many mugs come with recipe cards,Home Aloha's Stack-O-Gold mug came with a nifty tin with this recipe on it. Very pineapple-y and easy drinking. Would make a nice summer BBQ drink.
Mix #123 Tabu Kapu
2oz Demerara rum 1.5oz grenadine 1oz lime juice 1oz grapefruit juice 1oz orange juice 1/4oz Aperol 1 dash Angostura bitters
Shake with ice and pour into mug.
From the back of BG Reynolds' Lush Grenadine bottle comes a very grenadine flavored drink. But it's not too sweet due to the citrus and Aperol. Very nicely balanced.
Tumblr media
Mix #124 Tortuga
1oz Demerara 151 rum 1oz gold rum 1oz sweet vermouth 1/2oz orange curacao 1/2oz white creme de cacao 1/2oz lime juice 1/2oz lemon juice 1/2oz orange juice 1/4oz grenadine
Shake with plenty of ice and pour into classic style Tiki mug.
An original Trader Vic creation, his granddaughter Eve chose this as the drink for Sven Kirsten's Modernist Tiki mug and accompanying book from his Tiki Portraits series. This recipe is the version from Beachbum Berry's Potions of the Caribbean, which is a bit more specific when it comes to the measurements of the ingredients. It has chocolate and vermouth on the nose with a citrus-y body and a bit of a tart aftertaste. A nice, complex cocktail.
So don't sweat the new year. After a couple cocktails,it'll be alright.

The Battle of Mactan: Triumph and Tragedy in Philippine History
The Battle of Mactan, fought on April 27, 1521, was a pivotal event in Philippine history. It marked the first recorded resistance by indigenous Filipinos against foreign colonizers. Led by the native chieftain Lapu-Lapu, the warriors of Mactan Island successfully repelled Spanish conquistador Ferdinand Magellan and his forces.
The Arrival of Magellan
In March 1521, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in what is now known as the Philippines. He was on a mission to find a western route to the Spice Islands for Spain and claimed these newly discovered lands for King Charles I.
Magellan made contact with various local leaders and began converting them to Christianity under Spanish rule. However, when he encountered Lapu-Lapu, chief of Mactan Island in present-day Cebu province, things took an unexpected turn.
The Battle
Ferdinand Magellan reached the Philippines in March 1521, two years into his historic journey around the world. No European ship had at this point been to the Philippines, as the Portuguese, who were advancing over from India had at this point just arrived at Indonesia, China and Japan. Magellan made his first contact with a number of the local chieftains and immediately began working to prepare the ground for a new Spanish colony.
The local rulers of Cebu were baptized, and other chieftains did the same. He successfully took control of the Philippine archipelago except one of the eastern shores of the island of Cebu, Mactan Island. However, Datu Lapu-Lapu, one of the local chieftains, was wary of Europeans and was reluctant to accept Roman Catholicism or Spanish rule. Despite of that, as the Spanish ships anchored near the island, the indigenous community led by Chieftain Lapu-Lapu greeted the visitors with curiosity and caution. Instead of perceiving them as a threat, Lapu-Lapu and his people saw an opportunity to foster understanding between their cultures.
He accommodated Magellan and showed him around Mactan island. Lapu-Lapu, recognizing Magellan's sincerity, welcomed the proposition and arranged a gathering where both parties could exchange knowledge, stories, and traditions. Through open dialogue and cultural presentations, the Spaniards and the indigenous people of Mactan discovered common ground, deepening their appreciation for each other's heritage. Magellan was amazed with the beautiful scenery of Mactan island and he wanted to buy it. Lapu-Lapu was furious about it because he just want partnership with the Spaniards but both parties didn't agree with each other and it was then that Lapu-Lapu declared war.
Magellan attempted to have a surprised attack towards Lapu-Lapu, but Lapu-Lapu was wary, and he immediately led his warriors to war. Lapu-Lapu resisted the foreigners, despite Magellan's warnings and threats of violence.
Invasion of Mactan Island, where Lapu-Lapu had rallied his supporters, was led by 49 heavily armed and armored men under the command of Magellan on April 27. The Spanish were unable to bring their ship, and more importantly, their cannon, within range of the defenders due to the challenging topography of the waters. Instead, they decided to fight hand-to-hand with muskets. The force of well over a thousand natives who were determined to push them back into the sea was something they were not prepared for.
The conflict was fierce. Many natives were killed by the Spanish because of their superior weapons. In the end, the sheer volume of people simply overwhelmed them. Surprisingly, most of the Spanish managed to escape and survive. Magellan, on the other hand, was killed, and his body was kept as a trophy. In the end the triumph was a concise one, and the Spanish returned in force by the mid-sixteenth 100 years. Interestingly, the Philippines now recognizes Datu Lapu-Lapu and Ferdinand Magellan as national heroes.
Lapu-Lapu’s Legacy
The Battle of Mactan resulted in victory for Lapu-Lapu's forces—a triumph that reverberated throughout Philippine history. The event showcased both indigenous strength and unity against foreign aggression. Lapu-Lapu's heroic stand against the Spanish invaders has since become a symbol of resistance, patriotism, and pride among Filipinos. He is celebrated as one of the country's earliest national heroes.
Legacy and Commemoration
The name-brand battle took place on Mactan Island, but the location of the battle is now almost entirely obscured by construction. On the other hand, the island is home to a number of battle memorials, the most notable of which is the Lapu-Lapu shrine. An impressive statue of the revolt's leader can be found here, marking the spot where the native army defeated the Spanish. The spot where Ferdinand Magellan fell during the battle is also marked.
Today, the Battle of Mactan is commemorated on April 27 each year—an official Philippine holiday known as Lapu-Lapu Day or National Heroes' Day. It serves as a reminder to all Filipinos of their ancestors' bravery and sacrifice in defending their land. The battle also highlights the importance of recognizing indigenous cultures and their contributions to Philippine heritage.
In Conclusion
The Battle of Mactan was a historic clash that forever shaped Filipino history. Lapu-Lapu's victory over Magellan demonstrated that despite being vastly outnumbered and facing superior weaponry, the determination to protect one's homeland can triumph over foreign aggression. This event remains significant in modern-day Philippines, serving as a constant reminder of the country's rich cultural heritage and its people’s resilience in defending their freedom.

More than half of Philippine SIMs are still unregistered ahead of April 26 deadline —DICT
Data released by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) showed that more than half of the SIMs (subscriber identity modules) across the country have yet to be registered with their respective public telecommunications entities (PTEs) with just three days to go before the deadline. The DICT data showed that a total of 82,845,397 SIMs were registered as of 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, 2023. This is equivalent to 49.31% of the 168 million subscriber base nationwide, indicating that the majority has yet to be enrolled ahead of the deadline set on Wednesday, April 26, 2023. Broken down, Smart Communications Inc. accounted for 39.949 million, Globe Telecom Inc. for 37.099 million, and DITO Tele community Corp. for 5.769 million. Just last Friday, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said the government is not aiming for a 100% registration of SIMs, as some SIMs may not be registered for one reason or another. The DICT also said that the deadline will remain for now, despite requests from PTEs such as Globe and Smart for customers to have sufficient time to comply with the requirements. Under the SIM Card Registration Act, all PTEs are mandated to establish their respective registration platforms to onboard users who present valid identification cards. Users are given 180 days or until April 26, 2023, to register their SIM cards, or else face the risk of having them deactivated. The implementing rules and regulations of the SIM Card Registration Act took effect on December 27, after the measure was signed into law by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. last October. PTEs had said they were all set for the registration process, but birthing pains were expected during the initial stages. The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has since ordered them to report any problems encountered by users during the registration. —VAL, GMA Integrated News.
LAPU-LAPU DAY- APRIL 27 2023
Lapu-Lapu Day, observed on April 27, is a holiday that was created by Filipino President Duterte. It is a special working public holiday throughout the country and a special non-working holiday in Lapu-Lapu City. The holiday was declared in commemoration of the victory of Lapu- Lapu and his Filipino warriors against Spanish invaders, led by Ferdinand Magellan on April 27,
On the day of this battle, Lapu-Lapu led a group of fighters who repelled an invading force of 49 Spaniards under the leadership of Magellan, who was killed in the fight. The historic event is known as the Battle of Mactan. Lapu-Lapu was a native of Mactan and some argue he is the earliest-known indigenous Visayan Muslim chieftain from the island. The little island of Mactan was a thriving community before Spanish colonization when the Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in Cebu in the 16th Century. The brave Spanish navigator heard that the inhabitants of Mactan refused to recognize the King of Spain, and in response set one of its villages on fire. The great warrior Lapu-Lapu was one of the native leaders on the island who refused to acknowledge the sovereignty of Spain over the Islands.
After the incident, Magellan then led a group of fellow Spaniards (about three boatloads of them) and an even larger number of Cebuanos (indigenous inhabitants of Cebu, who form a major ethnicity in the Philippines today) on a visit to Mactan, to help a chief who had apparently recognized the sovereignty of the King of Spain and therefore had the favor of the Spanish. On this visit, the entourage was ambushed by Lapu-Lapu and his men, armed with native fighting gear, including wooden shields, bows and arrows, and lances. This event took place on April 27, 1521. Today, there is a monument of Ferdinand Magellan which was mounted on the approximate spot on which he fell and died, to honor his bravery. The original town of Opon was founded by an Augustinian friar in 1730 before being renamed ‘Datu Lapu-Lapu’ in 1961 after it became a city in honor of the warrior who defeated Magellan and his troops in 1521. This battle is commemorated at the Lapu-Lapu shrine in Punta Engaño.

YLLANA MARIE ADUANA CROWNED MISS PHILIPPINES EARTH 2023 APRIL 29
Yllana Marie Aduana from Siniloan, Laguna won the Miss Philippines Earth 2023 title during the coronation night in Toledo City, Cebu. The 24-year-old medical laboratory scientist and model bested 27 other candidates for the crown during the environmentally dedicated national pageant for Filipinas. Outgoing Miss Philippines Earth 2022 Jenny Ramp crowned Yllana at the event. During the Top 10 hashtag portion, Yllana received the word "safety" and touched on food and water security. This month, the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) warned of the onset of the El Niño phenomenon and asked the public to do its part in conserving the water supply. "Safety plays a very salient role in our lives," she said. "We have to always be secure, not only safe but also in terms of water security, and food security because as Miss Philippines Earth, I know that I am a hardworking person, and I can always incorporate this in order for us to achieve safety at all costs and protect Mother Earth the way she protects us all with all safety," she added In the final question-and-answer portion, the top five candidates were asked: "What do you think people in the future would say about your generation?" Yllana said, "I would definitely say that our generation, although misconstrued as very ardent, I would like to say that we use our voices for a reason and that is to speak up for the things that we know are right and for the things that we know we deserve." "That is why we are very ardent about it. That is why I’m also conducting colloquiums on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their interconnectedness to nature in hopes to precipitate people’s consciousness because our future is the linebackers and the pioneers of environmental amelioration and we should always take advantage of it at all costs."
PROMOTING LOCAL DISHES MAY EMPOWER COMMUNITIES- APRIL 30 2023 DABAWENYOS can empower local communities by supporting traditional food and heirloom dishes, a high-ranking official from the Department of Tourism-Davao Region (DOT-Davao). “Dako ang potential ng mga product nila na nag-improve talaga so hopefully daghan makapalit og makatry sa ilahang produkto aron makatabang pod ta (There is a lot of potential with their products and we are seeing improvements. Hopefully, more will be able to try their food and could benefit them),” Tanya Rabat-Tan, DOT-Davao regional director, said in an interview. Rabat-Tan said traditional dishes are crucial in preserving a place’s history and identity “Heirloom dishes often tell us a lot about a place’s history, resources, and identity…
The beauty of drawing tourists for destinations with food is that we can empower our communities in becoming guardians of our cultural heritage,” Rabat-Tan said in a speech during Kalutong Pilipino opening ceremonies in Ayala Malls Abreeza, on April 28. Thus, Rabat-Tan said Kalutong Pilipino should help “the transmission of the knowledge of our unique cuisines for the generations to come”. “[Let us] continue to support our industries, food tourism stakeholders, and most especially our agri-communities who all play a vital role in the culinary tourism ecosystem,” Rabat-Tan said. The event is a part of a month-long celebration of “Buwan ng Kalutong Pilipino,” under Proclamation 469 series of 2018 signed by former President Rodrigo Duterte. “Since its [Kalutong Pilipino] inception in 2019, the event has always been well-participated by our stakeholders, our exhibitors, and hotels,” she said. The exhibit has 12 booth spaces, six occupied by the Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita (Kadiwa) market, and five Davao Region and Davao City provinces occupied the other six. There will also be performances or cooking demonstrations from the provinces or traditional cooking. “If you can see, mas daghan [vendors] (each stall has more vendors than the usual), naa pod silay (they also have) exhibitors na mga farmers,” Rabat-Tan said. Kalutong Pilipino is a collaboration between DOT, Department of Agriculture (DA) and National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) set on April 28 to 30, 2023. This aims to "promote traditional dishes and the harvest of Davao local farmers."
MARCOS RAISES NEAR-CRASH INCIDENT IN WPS WITH CHINA- MAY 1 2023 PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has directed the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to identify the country’s fishing ground in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) amid the ongoing dispute in the territory with China. In an interview with reporters aboard a flight on the way to the United States (US), Marcos reiterated the government’s priority to ensure the fishing rights of the Filipinos in the area. “I mean, of course, the overall priority is to safeguard our maritime territory but when you go down into the details, the most immediate, let’s say, concern is the fishing rights. So that’s what we have to do. That’s what we have to decide and they have agreed again to sit down,” he said. “I’ve asked the Coast Guard and the DFA to put together perhaps a map of these fishing grounds that sasabihin natin, ito Pilipinas talaga ito and we’ll see what they say when we give them our proposal,” he added. Marcos made the statement in light of a near-crash incident between a Chinese and Filipino vessel in the waters around Ayungin Shoal last week.

Ok. I need your mixed drink wizardry once again. I need a cocktail for Muriel Aslany, the anger-ball with trust issues who weaponizes paper umbrellas. She'd go for something with just enough class and just enough fruit that someone might raise an eyebrow, but would want it strong and mean. The drink, of course, requires a paper umbrella.
Aight so we're gonna drop some tiki cocktail tech on @swaps55
First, a disclaimer! I am not an expert on tiki drinks. I haven't practiced nearly as many of them. I've sat on this one for a couple of days trying to sort out my thoughts on this one.
The drink I'd want Aslany to drink is terribly impractical assuming the constraints of space travel/agriculture. Here we go anyway!
Chief Lapu Lapu:
This cocktail is served in a hollowed out pineapple and features a blend of light and dark rum, lemon and orange juice, grenadine and simple syrup. Served, of course, with a little umbrella! It relies on balancing ingredients, and I honestly would have trust issues with this even at a dedicated tiki bar. The trick here for someone like Aslany is to request it made with 151, or overproofed rum. There are light and dark variations of 151 proof rums, and personally I'm personally partial to Plantation's O.F.T.D. 151 dark rum (I actually repurpose it to make my own coffee liquor, but that's a different post...) and there are plenty of silver 151 options available on the market.
I should point out that I want Aslany to order this because I just love the idea of Muriel walking around with a full pineapple in hand.
And now, for what Muriel Aslany would probably actually order!
151 Swizzle:
Crushed Ice, lime juice, Pernod (or other anisette I suppose), Angostura bitters, simple syrup, a dash of cinammon... But what gives the cocktail its name, and its signature kick, is Lemon Hart 151 demerara rum (though I've seen recipes that call for El Dorado 151.) after the cocktail is built in the tin cup, it is deliberately topped with more 151 proof rum to ensure the first few sips will sucker punch you straight into a - hopefully pleasant - buzz. This is easier to conscience for off-earth consumption because it doesn't require any fresh fruit (although fresh squeezed juice is ALWAYS better) and because it doesn't require Aslany to make any modifications to the recipe. Less likely to confuse bartenders, and more reliable no matter where an alliance jar-head finds themself.
Some notes before I drop my recipes for the peanut gallery to test at home!
One hundred and fifty one proof rum, 151, is a high enough alcohol content to be lit on fire (it's usually the secret behind flaming shots) and will knock you on your ass. Proceed with caution, it will burn out your tastebuds and overwhelm most anything.
For tiki cocktails in general, I highly recommend looking for some pot-stilled rum. As weird as it sounds, the funkier the better. This is because tiki cocktails play with huge, bright, intense flavors and you need to balance them with that in mind. Big, bombastic flavors are needed to combat the falernum, orgeat, grenadine, fresh citrus/pineapple/coconut, and anisettes like Pernod that are often found in this genre. Everyone's tastes will be different, but I encourage you to use rums that you wouldn't drink on their own for your tiki cocktail creations. Put it this way, I wouldn't put my friendliest aged rum in a tiki cocktail. Save that for neat or rocks sipping, or as a substitute for brandy/cognac whiskey/scotch in other drink recipes. This does mean my suggestions may not be your favorites, feel free to experiment!
Aslany's Lapu Lapu
1.5 oz Bacardi 151 or Rum Fire 1.5 oz Lemon Hart 151 or Plantation O.F.T.D. 2.5 oz Orange Juice 2 oz Lemon Juice 1 oz Simple Syrup or Gomme Syrup 0.75 oz Grenadine (use real pomegranate grenadine!!!!!) Shake in tin with ice, then strain into a hollowed out pineapple. Serve with a straw, and garnish with your umbrella (your choice of color, I recommend a light blue or something between red-pink for contrast with your pineapple.)
I'd recommend Bacardi 151 with Plantation or Rum Fire with Lemon Hart, but hey try any combination of dark and light 151 rums you can get your hands on!
151 Swizzle
1 cup Crushed Ice. (Crush it yourself in a cloth bag if you have to! You want this finely crushed.) 1 oz (fresh!) Lime Juice (I want to try 1 oz lime and 0.5 oz lemon on a hunch but haven't gotten around to it yet) 1 oz Simple Syrup (try Demerara? Seems like it would be better) 1 barspoon or 0.33 oz Pernod 1 dash Angostura bitters 1.5 oz Lemon Hart 151
to top:
0.25 oz Lemon Hart 151 dash of cinnamon
build in your collins glass. Stir til frosty, then top with the remaining rum and cinammon. Serve with a straw and an umbrella again, color your choice ;) gonna tag @ferusaurelius and @pigeontheoneandonly again because cocktails.

Hey guys, if this movie is showing wherever you are, please boycott it
Tumblr media
There are so many things wrong with it and it is Extremely disrespectful to Filipinos.
1. Ferdinand Magellan was sent by Spain to search for Moluccas, but ended up on Philippine shores. This is during the time European colonizers competed with each other as to who gets to colonize most of the world.
2. This movie is framing Lapu-Lapu, a Filipino hero, as a villain. The irony right? Lapu-Lapu was a chief of his tribe. He led them to battle to protect them and their land from these colonizers. It was rightfully so.
3. These colonizers had the goal of taking Gold, converting people to their Christian God, and achieving Glory in conquering the rest of the world. These white men saw how much gold the Filipinos had and wanted them for themselves.
4. Knowing they made the colonizers the protagonists here, it's very likely the Filipinos will be portrayed as savages. Which is again, very disrespectful. There were early accounts providing that pre-colonial Filipinos were actually civilized. Do not believe the accounts likening Filipinos to monkeys. Our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal has produced a written work debunking that and proving that pre-colonial Filipinos were civilized and had systems that worked in governing people. Pre-colonial Filipinos treated women as equals of men too.
5. And making that POC to be an ally of Magellan? Apalling. Her name is also the name of one of the major Philippine Islands which were also one of the first places Spain conquered in the Philippines.
6. They also made the Filipino chieftain of Cebu, highly dependent upon the colonizers to fix his tribe's problems. This was not at all the case. The tribe had a government system and its own rules to deal with predicaments. The heads of tribes which did not attack the colonizers, were converted into Christianity and it took blood compacts to seal agreements between the tribes and the colonizers.
7. People were also saying a lot of the character designs look unoriginal and that the designs were ripped off El Dorado. And a lot of the designs for the Filipinos don't even look like Filipinos.
So yeah. I'm just very heated about this. This is an atrocity and deserves no one to see it. May the spirits of the fallen pre-colonial warriors haunt and torment the scum behind this movie.

Sea of Emotions and Memories
Autobiography by Edhelen Mae Zamora
On the 7th day of the rainy season of July, A little bundle of joy was born from the loving couple. The little girl grew up surrounded by the affections of her family. She felt content with her boat sailing smoothly, but there was no waveless sea: It was the calm before the storm. If I could describe my life by a quote, it would be: “Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom.” Although understanding others can help you build relationships, knowing oneself can strengthen your relationship with others and yourself.
When I was a kid, I was used to saying goodbye to my friends. My Father’s work required us to move frequently and I had to transfer to different schools often. Did I feel lonely? Yes. I felt alone, stranded in a deserted island. The string holding my friendships was the communication; the means for that communication were not available. I had to cut those ties. With the fresh air and green scenery, the place was surrounded by big old trees.
I was 8 when I entered my new school at Lutopan, Toledo City with wavering courage. ‘Should I smile or be funny?’ My thoughts whenever I have to introduce myself. Like a rabbit surrounded by foxes, looking for an escape before I get eaten by the pressure of those stares. My teacher patted my back and told me “It’s ok” I, Conflicted by the sudden action but I motivated myself to shallow the nervousness. Afterward, I would be bombarded with questions by my classmates. The one thing that stood out was,” Your sister is pretty!” or “Your brother is handsome!” Happy that someone complimented my siblings and so in response, I talked more about them.
My classmate would talk with me although it was mostly about my siblings, “this is nice” or so I thought. They were my friends and yet there was this unspeakable gap between us. They only talked to me when they needed something or about my sister and brother. Transferred to Guba, I was 12 when my classmate, Katherine, asked if we could be friends. “I had experienced the same thing” she once had to answer the curiosities about her sister that she grew tired of it. “So rather than someone who I never talked to, I would love to know more about my friend.”
She added that were an ally of some sort. I thought I was used to being a shadow of my siblings but I was wrong. After turning 13, we moved back to Lapu-Lapu City and exchanged our goodbyes through gifts. Strangely, I was not feeling lonely since I can talk to her through chat which we still do to this day. I became more confident about myself and join a beauty pageant in my school although I never won.
I was welcomed back by the briny smell of the sea under the bridge and reminiscent of my childhood with Claire and Hannah. My new teacher told me that Claire and Hannah were arguing as to whose section should I be in, I was glad they did not forget me. After coming back to Lapu-Lapu, I was lost because of the waves and drowned myself. I became more unmotivated but my friends encouraged me to join a club and finally discovered my lost passion for writing. I won second place in my school journalism for sports writing and became the sports editor-in-chief for Gun-ob High School. One step at a time, I learned a lot about myself and through that, I was able to become who I am today.
2019, I was 15 when my father got promoted to Assistant Pastor. Once again, we pass by the bridge surrounded by the strong briny smell of the sea and the tiny boats below us. My father became the Pastor of the local congregation of Palmera after 2 months and the waters on my feet swayed harder.
The Pandemic continued for 2 years to the present but along those waves of uncertainty, Writing became my escape. On that Island of Words, I was able to spell out my dreams. My unexpected passion for Psychology became my drive to pursue social studies. Gradually, I stepped out of the sea and walked toward the path I choose to take. The Sea became the Emotions and Memories that I will always treasure, the waves pushed me to who I wanted to become.

Famous personalities in the field of ABM. Mr. Felipe Gozon, a Filipino lawyer and the Chairman & CEO of GMA Network Incorporated, one of the largest media networks in the Philippines, is here to start the list. Felipe Lapus Gozon is a Philippine businessperson who has been the head of 31 different companies. He is Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of GMA Network, Inc., Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of GMA Marketing & Productions, Inc., Chairman for RGMA Marketing & Productions, Inc., Chairman for Scenarios, Inc., Chairman & Chief Executive Officer for GMA New Media, Inc., Chairman for Alta Productions Group, Inc., etc. In the past, he was Chairman of Marcopper Mining Corp. and a Philippine Air Negotiating Panel Member. He earned a degree from the University of the Philippines and a degree from Yale Law School.
Gozon is frequently seen on the television segment, "24 Oras", which is an example of broadcast media wherein he is often portrayed as a successful businessman. In an interview entitled "24 Oras: Autobiography ni Atty. Felipe L. Gozon, inilabas", his achievements and some of the challenges he experienced were seen and discussed in the media. Gozon is also regularly featured on a variety of websites, which are new media, and newspapers, which are print media. In those I've read, I've found that in blogs, the author introduced Gozon as a good lawyer and CEO of a major broadcast network. "Gozon entered the broadcasting industry with little knowledge of the field, but his hard work and dedication led him to the top of his game. When he first held a position in the network’s Board of Directors, he took it as a challenge to strive for excellence.". The author also included some of his awards and how Gozon did when he was new to business. While in the newspapers, I found that Gozon 's presentation was based only on an interview. It was all about some of the things he said. Here's an example, "We're delighted that we've been chosen to participate in this month's issue of the CEO Magazine. It's a reputable magazine, and we're honored.
As the owner of the broadcast network, I think that GMA, being the No. 1 network in the Philippines, has helped Gozon to be even more competitive in the field of industry.
