Among the many things I want from the SNW/LDS crossover:

Jack Ransom on the Enterprise. Look, Jerry and Rebecca constantly guest on each other’s shows and/or find projects to do together. Is it too much to ask for Jack to say to Una, “You know, in another life, I think we could have been happy together. Six kids, two dogs, a little starship of our own.” And Una reflexively replies, “Two kids, six dogs,” and Jack says, “What?” and Una says, “What?” (Note: I don’t know how many dogs they actually have, just that Jerry has said it’s an “illegal” number of dogs.)

Beckett to constantly confuse Una for Christine and vice-versa, finally asking if M’Ress is onboard yet. (Note: And the TAS fans go wild for a name drop for Lieutenant M’Ress, another NCC 1701 crewmember originated by Majel Barrett Roddenberry.)

Boimler to excitedly admit that his hair goes high in the front because he wants to be like Pike. Maybe Pike even temporarily dyes his hair purple in solidarity.

MCE Best of 2023: Honorable Mention

TV Shows: Star Trek Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds (Paramount+)

On the TV Side of things we come back to Star Trek.

With the growing pains of Discovery the second season of that show would bring in Christopher Pike and Spock to assist the crew.

Proving popular the spinoff would begin to explore the period right when the prime directive became prevalent with the early adventures of the original USS Enterprise.

Along with intended first officer Una Chin Riley and nurse Christine Chapel the homages to the original explorers and their own adventures were prevalent.

With the Musical episode being chief among them.

And a finale that sets up the Gorn as the overreaching character that will likely carry through the series.

The 8th episode is where this entry comes into play as on the animated spectrum we get a more comedic take.

Lower Decks focuses on the supporting crew of a second contact ship named Cerritos.

Beckett Mariner has lived in the shadow of Starfleet, and her intention of staying down at the bottom of the rung clashes with her best friends, Brad Boimler, D’Vana Tendi, and Sam Rutherford.

Only the crew led by her mother Captain Carol Freeman and First Officer Jack Ransom still see the value of grunt work to give these ensigns.

The fun is had here with cameos and callbacks aplenty.

Our shows would end up crossing via a portal that Boimler activated sending him 120 years back in time. As Pike and company ponder the future he knows but is specifically told not to mention Mariner ends up joining him as both Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome manage to take their animated counterparts and blend them well into live action.

Also comes with nice Coda at the end showing a possible reason into the mindset of the lower deckers.

Both shows mange to evoke what was insightful about Star Trek for many.

While Picard righted a ship, both Strange New Worlds in the past and Lower Decks in between managed to show off all the possibilities that still could be found.

And boy does it work.

Moopsy.

SUM 22: Led by a crossover both of these Star Treks mange to bring some levity back into boldly going where none went before.

I think between Ortegas and chapel, not a single person on the enterprise can keep anything secret. Nobody knows for sure if Chapel is playing fast and loose with space HIPAA or if Ortegas is bribing a whole network of lower deckers who just happen to stumble across everyone’s dirty little secrets, but if you get your dick stuck in a weird alien plant or if you cheated on your partner with a visiting diplomat the entire ship will know before the start of the next shift and it all started with Erica and Christine somehow

04x17 - Runaround

TW: Racism in terms of the 80s when it first aired.

Viv is suffering from hayfever as she walks around Chapel Market. She approaches a pharmacy and tries to buy antihistamines but the ones she looks at induce drowsiness so she can't. Before she can look at more she's called to visit an Italian cafe (Alpino IRL but known as Carricola). The worker, Janet (played by Linda Robson) has called because of a corpse. Nice side of dead body with your breakfast?

Janet leads Viv to a flat on the top floor where they find a man dead in bed with his non-English speaking sister at his bedside. The man owns the cafe - or did - and his children are supposed to run it. The son, Georgio is a nasty piece of work according to Janet. His sister, Isabella isn't much better. Viv has to call for a doctor but her radio is cutting in and out. She heads outside and tells Tom she needs an Italian-speaking doctor if possible. Thankfully Bob knows of one - if he's still alive himself.

"I'm young fit and active, me!" Yorkie protests as Malcolm and June give him a lift to his beat. He's sulking because nothing happens there. He has his AQR with Christine next week and he hasn't had a result in months. Once he arrives he's called into number 23. The old lady asks him to let himself in by the key that's on a string because she's too ill to do it herself. When he's inside she explains she's agoraphobic. Yorkie offers to go to the shop for her but she assures him it's alright she has a home help twice a week for that. She gets upset telling him about a visit from her son the year previously where he berated her for not being able to step outside. She starts to cry and Yorkie flails for a second before hugging her.

June and Malcolm drive to a bus depot. Gore, a bus driver played by John Challis, is a drunk. He came to work the day before and was suspended. He returned today - still drunk - with a sledgehammer and he's smashed up the locker room. Oh... and he knows martial arts. "Oh brilliant, a paralytic karate kid, that's all we need!" Malcolm requests backup as June approaches and tries to speak to Mr Gore but it appears he's left the depot until they hear a shout behind them. Gore has locked himself in a double-decker bus and started smashing the windows. "... Ladies first..." Malcolm suggests.

Viv asks Janet how to contact the dead man's son and Janet suggests she doesn't bother because he's a nasty piece of work who hates the police. Seconds later, Georgio and his sister arrive and fire Janet for contacting the police. She shrugs and walks out! He then tells Viv that they sort things out for themselves and that she should leave. She tells him to essentially shut up and follow her upstairs.

The old lady tells Yorkie she thinks the builders who are in the house next door are actually burglars. Yorkie wonders if they got the wrong side but she explains that one of them looked through the letterbox of her house and saw the key she had dangling on a string and he told the first. The first told him to forget it and there's 'bound to be another empty one elsewhere'. Yorkie admits it doesn't sound like builders and he looks out the window at them as they carry things out to a truck. He recognises one of them as a burglar.

At the bus depot, Gore is now breaking all the windows of the bus. Gore shouts that it doesn't have anything to do with the police so they should leave and June should take her monkey with her. "Monkey. That's original...." Malcolm drawls.

In the bedroom of the old man, the sister/aunt is now throwing things and shouting angrily in Italian at Georgio. Viv tries to break it up as they argue. Georgio struggles with Viv and throws her out of the room, locking her out of it as he and his aunt continue to row. Viv calls for urgent assistance.

Gore tells June that he was assaulted by a passenger who cut his face with a Stanley knife and the manager wants to send him back on nights for it to happen again. Malcolm has to tell June there are no shields or backup. Gore has now started the bus and drives it straight out of the depot!

Backup has arrived to help Viv though Isabella is doing her best to stop them getting up the stairs. She assaults Viv and then Georgio charges out and launches at her too! Bob thankfully manages to wrestle him to the ground and arrest him. Viv struggles with Isabella and right behind her, the aunt tries to smack a bottle over the girls head. During all this chaos, the doctor makes her way up the stairs!

June and Malcolm follow behind the bus. He crashes into a garden and legs it on foot with Malcolm behind him and June driving to cut him off.

Reg confirms that the man Yorkie has recognised is out on bail as is his brother. They're known violent criminals and Reg recommends caution if he's thinking of tackling them. Yorkie insists he'll be careful and requests backup. Unfortunately, they're busy and Tom can't help, even if they are due to leave the premises. Daisy suggests he get on the back of the truck without the brothers seeing him which he does!

Malcolm loses sight of Gore so he and June can help! Yorkie reminds them it's his collar!

Georgio threatens Bob that he'll be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life once this is over. Bob makes out as though he's going to slap him and Georgio flinches.

Bob and Tony laugh and mock how 'scared' they are of his threat. Viv calls him through to the bedroom and the doctor tells him that the boy has killed the father by removing heart medication according to the aunt.

Yorkie has a nose inside some of the bags and finds stolen equipment. They manage to arrest both of the brothers in a nice little sting as they pretend not to look and then pounce at the traffic lights.

Bob contacts the station and asks for the 'circus' to be sent because it's now a suspicious death. "For you Bob, anything!" Tom replies.

Gore is a spectator as June and Malcolm bring the brothers to their car with Yorkie. Gore spots he's been recognised and so they send Yorkie off after him!
