Inca Textiles
For the Incas finely worked and highly decorative textiles came to symbolize both wealth and status, fine cloth could be used as both a tax and currency, and the very best textiles became amongst the most prized of all possessions, even more precious than gold or silver. Inca weavers were technically the most accomplished the Americas had ever seen and, with up to 120 wefts per centimetre, the best fabrics were considered the most precious gifts of all. As a result, when the Spanish arrived in the early 16th century CE, it was textiles and not metal goods which were given in welcome to these visitors from another world.
Although very few examples of Inca textiles survive from the heartland of the empire, and we also know that many textiles were burnt to prevent them from falling into the hands of the Spanish, we do have, thanks to the dryness of the Andean environment, many textile examples from the highlands and mountain burial sites. In addition, Spanish chroniclers often made drawings of textile designs and clothing so that we have a reasonable picture of the varieties in use.
Weavers
It seems that both men and women created textiles, but it was a skill women of all classes were expected to be accomplished at. The principal equipment was the backstrap loom for smaller pieces and either the horizontal single-heddle loom or vertical loom with four poles for larger pieces, such as rugs and blankets. Spinning was done with a drop spindle, typically in ceramic or wood. Inca textiles were made using cotton (especially on the coast and in the eastern lowlands) or llama, alpaca, and vicuña wool (more common in the highlands) which can be exceptionally fine. Goods made using the super-soft vicuña wool were restricted and only the Inca ruler could own vicuña herds. Rougher textiles were also made using maguey fibres.
The finest female weavers (aclla) from across the empire were forcibly relocated to the capital Cuzco to work in the Acllawasi or 'House of the Chosen Women'. Here, too, state sponsored workshops with subsidised workers produced clothing for the nobility and the army. It was here that the finest cloth was made by male specialists known as qumpicamayocs or 'keepers of the fine cloth'. The Incas had three categories of cloth: the roughest was chusi (used primarily for blankets); slightly less coarse and most common was awasca for daily use and the military but which was rarely decorative; and the finest cloth was qompi. The latter was divided into a further two categories - one grade for tribute, the other for royal and religious function. Many burials contained not only textiles but also oblong work-baskets which contained the tools necessary for weaving (spindles, bobbins, spools of thread, and metal pins and needles), indicating that weaving was a highly esteemed craft.

Datura(Eda's mentor)
Tada! Datura from my Eda raises two gods AU. Here's the first chapter she's in!
If you want to know what beast she is exactly, I have no idea, I drew something vaugly feline and gave it lots of things I think are cool and badass, so birdish legs with cassowary claws and feathers and not always stinging tentacles cause why not? Her eyes do the cat thing where happy/excited/interested/playful = bigger and scared/angry/irritated = thin.
All of the images are from after the coven system was established, so within a span of 42 years from coven establishment to the current point in the story, ~8 years before the show.
The reason is Datura looked and was very different before the covens. That scar is from a coven related encounter. The earliest image is the center half shifted one.
These are her full and half beast/witch forms. And yes, that is blood, it's Cockatrice blood.
Gender: female
Pronouns: she/her
Age: 132, at story point, 140, at human's arrival
Sexuality: pansexual, polyamorous
Species: Werebeast
Coven: covenless, wild witch
Occupation: healer(formerly), potion maker(formerly), baker, Guardian.
Palisman: Jalapeño, a snadger
Family: Chusi(primary mate), secondary mates, several children and grandchildren, Edalyn Clawthorne(found kit), Enzo Clawthorne (grandchild), King Clawthorne(grandson)
Datura was the parent Eda needed but didn't have with Gwendolyn when she first got her curse. Datura was able to handle the situation far better and didn't treat the Owl Beast like something that could be removed or cured, and she was able to handle the Owl Beast itself without getting hurt. She is bigger than it.
Datura does consider herself Eda's beast parent and Eda as her kit, she has never tried to replace Eda's parents, but she filled the roll they couldn't and was what Eda needed. Eda considers Datura to be parently, like she is her parent.
So Enzo and King get to call her grandma cause Datura, like any good parent, is going to embarrass Eda about the fact that the illusion spell she made for her kid looks like the child of her and her ex!
More on Datura, Werebeasts and close up of Datura's staff under the cut!
First thing you gotta know about Datura is that she is very tall, her beast form is is over twelve feet tall, and her half beast form is over seven feet. So yeah, she's very tall but extremely good at stealth, especially for something so big.
Her Palisman is a Fire Honey Snadger, his name is Jalapeño, Peño for short, and he's a spicy little shit. He's also very old, only about 10 years younger than Datura, Werebeasts typically carve/find Palisman earlier than witches and demons.
Datura, as her name might suggest, is quite good with poisons and toxins, she is also a very skilled healer and uses older, less modern forms of magic. Magic more connected to the environment and world is typically practiced by Werebeasts since they are more connected to nature.
Datura is good at keeping secrets and has a lot of forbidden knowledge, she is a Guardian of nature, smaller creatures and knowledge. She dwells in the deep swamps of the Isles where she lives, hunts and studies magic.
Datura is firmly against the covens, Belos in particular, most Werebeasts, who used to live among witches, just decided to leave and go back to the wilderness to avoid the covens since you really aren't going to spend the resources to go after something with magic, sharp claws and teeth, the ability to change shape on the spot and who live in packs sometimes when they aren't doing anything.
Werebeasts in general dislike the coven system way of magic, Datura absolutely hates it for personal reasons not elaborated on here.
After Belos's rise, a general misconception sprung out of nowhere(belos) that Werebeasts were more animal than not, and that just made staying away a better option for Werebeasts due to the fear others had of them suddenly going feral on everything. Werebeasts don't do that, if they go feral, it's cause they've been threatened and they will react like anything will, fight flight freeze, or they've chosen too.
Werebeasts are polyamorous, as most typically have a primary mate, sometimes two primary mates, and many secondary mates. The bond between Werebeast primary mates is unique and somewhat comparable to spousal relationships, but not entirely, it is a different bond and a very strong one.
Primary mates may go years or decades without seeing or hearing from one another, and then get right back at it.
Primary mates do not have to involve sex, secondary mates usually do.
Monogamy is viewed as an inefficient, slightly odd thing to Werebeasts, why limit yourself(sexually and for reproductive opportunities)?
Sometimes Werebeasts will breed with other species, with beast demons, the result is a typical Werebeast child that is more likely to have the beast form of their beast parent. If that child then breed with another beast, the same thing happens, there Werebeast stays dominant.
For witches and bi pedal demons, it gets a bit more complicated.
The offspring of a Werebeast and a witch or biped demon will take on the Werebeast traita, essentially being a full Werebeast despite being half. It remains the same as long as the offspring is at least 25% Werebeast, once it falls below that, the offspring might have some shifting difficulties and a less developed half shifted form, eventually it degrades to the point where the hald shifted form is no longer there, and there are many witch bloonlines with Werebeasts blood in them that sometimes express themselves with odd birth defects, like tails or claws or feathers.
A complete transition for Werebeasts involves changing every aspect of how they look and their body structure, an example is Datura naturally being a digitagrade and for a full shift she'd have to go from digitagrade to plantigrade, which is rough on the body and causes pain if a Werebeast stays in that least natural form too long. Full shifts also involve taking on a human/witch skin color, which most Werebeast don't have and that takes more energy. It is possible for full shifts, but it is uncomfortable and considered unnecessary when the half shifted form gets the job done just fine.
Werebeast/witch hybrids that inherit a beast form but don't inherit the half shift frequently suffer from joint pain due to the two darasticly different forms and no in between to ease the transition.
Yo, drawing Datura was stupid fun, I loved drawing both her forms and I really liked the outfits I came up with, I'm very proud of them, so here's some close ups, I spent a stupid long amount of time drawing these, I got sick twice, I'm gonna show you them as much as I want and you're gonna see all the details.
Main shot
Angry
Danger Floof. I know, she looks adorable but she literally just killed a Cockatrice, those things are lethal. Danger. Floof.
Casual at home, she's watching Eda and Peño fight over food, child Eda would absolutely pick a fight with Peño.
Could you tell this was my favorite? It had a different color scheme that might've tipped you off to some stuff but when deciding I sent to my friend and cousin and they both said the blues and purples. It's really pretty.
This one I also really liked drawing, there's just something about it I love.
And Jalapeño at the end, honey peppers are a sweet and spicy type of pepper on thr boiling isles. Honey peppers are also the name of a popular snack, of regular spicy peppers dipped in honey and either all drippy or like a taffy.
Alright, that's that, it's finally done and I can post the next chapter!
I hope you all have a good day, whatever that is for you!
VJS Out!
