The Old Bill as art crtic
“…miles and miles of hoardings hiding the ugly hole in the ground that is the start of the North East Link…” Greensborough Rd, May, 2024. (McLachlan) You’ve got to feel something for the persecution poor old William Posters has suffered from the Old Bill. He’s been copping it from the coppers for years, the words “Bill Posters Prosecuted” once upon a time a familiar sight on awnings and placards…

Peñíscola, Spain (No. 4)
From the year 718 when Tarik concluded the conquest until 1233, the city of Peñíscola lives under Muslim rule. Few details of this time are known. Arab geographers allude to Peñíscola (which they will call Banáskula or Baniskula due to the adaptation of the place-name to their language) as an impregnable castle by the sea, which is populated, has farmsteads, crops, an abundance of waters and important salt flats. From the fortress, which will be the border with Christendom, the Moors pirate the coastline and carry out incursions into Catalonia .
Peñíscola will be the cradle of illustrious characters such as the Wolf King 'Mohamed ben San, Aben Mardanis' (1124) who will manage to maintain a Muslim kingdom in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula against the Berber invaders, and the literary Alí Albatá , who will intervene in the negotiations with king Jaime I .
Although he had already tried in 1225, besieging it for two months, it will not be until 1233 when Jaime I will take possession of the city of Peñíscola, also regaining dominion over the sea. It will be a peaceful conquest. After the fall of Burriana, which left the Muslim castles in the north isolated, the city surrendered without a fight and under certain pacts that respected Saracen laws and customs.
On January 28, 1251, however, Jaime I of Aragon will grant a population charter to the city under the jurisdiction of Valencia , by virtue of which he will dispossess the Moors of all their property that he will deliver to the new Christian settlers . This measure will promote the demographic and economic consolidation of the city, beginning a period of prosperity.
Between 1294 and 1307 the current Templar castle was built on the remains of the Arab citadel . The promoters were Fray Berenguer de Cardona , who was the Master of the Order of the Temple in Aragon and Catalonia, and Fray Arnaldo de Banyuls , who was the Commander of Peñíscola. The coats of arms of both are preserved sculpted in stone forming heraldic bands located above the access door to the castle and also above the door of the basilica.

Malus domestica
Nothing quite beats an apple does it? And I’m not talking about that device in the palm of your hand that you are possibly reading this on right now. I mean that most widely planted and regularly consumed fruit of all, Malus domestica – the apple. I remember a time from my childhood when my sister and I planted two trees grown from pips at the back of our house in Rosanna, the relic from some…

Listen
They say that silence is golden and that sometimes it’s better to listen than to be heard. In Yallambie Park last October there appeared one morning a couple of open faced, Perspex triangular boxes the mysterious purpose of which was not immediately apparent to the cursory glance. What were they for? Had they been beamed down overnight by a visiting alien space ship in lieu of the usual crop…

Community. What is it?
Tumblr media
(Community Services , n.d.)
Just for a second, stop and look around you.
What do you notice?
The birds, trees and natural sounds? People on the move, invested in deep conversations, or on their cellphones? Children playing and parents looking on? People on the streets, begging as their livelihood? The buildings that house families, refugees, people with different abilities that meet with each other?
What do you notice?
The commonality that draws us together despite the differences. The commonality that allows us to interact, discuss, support, live and to celebrate. This commonality, otherwise known as a ‘community’ can be described as a “space where people think for themselves, dream their dreams, and come together to create and celebrate their common humanity.” (O'Connell, 1988).
But how do we create this environment? An environment in which we prosper economically, socially, naturally, educationally and architecturally can be accomplished through:
Membership – Individuals within the community have a sense of belonging (Strong Communities, 2017).
Influence and Fulfillment of needs – The needs of the community are listened to, recognized and is actively being addressed. Members of the community sense their influence over the community, and the communities influence over them.  Through this, they are rewarded either with a social network or skills, for their participation within the community (Strong Communities, 2017)
Vision for the future – Planning, otherwise known as a “blueprint for the future” (McMahon, 2013) allows communities to plan change; which is proven to be more successful; as opposed to communities which change by chance. (McMahon, 2013)
Accounting for, utilizing and enhancing assets – this is inclusive of all human, structural, natural and economic resources. By building on what is already establish reduces the cost of development and promotion and serves to meet the needs of the community at a larger scale (McMahon, 2013). As mentioned in The Living City, Roberta Brandes Gratz says “successful cities think small in a big way” (McMahon E. T., 1955)
Strong leadership and committed citizens – “Communities must be curated and nurtured”.  (Castro, 2017). These individuals possess local knowledge and have the passion and perspective to establish and facilitate community cohesion. With this, resilience and real, lasting change can be achieved. (Strong Communities, 2017)
Despite the knowledge that exists around the successful development of a community, the lack of resources and poverty; particularly within a South African context; results in communities which have formed in less than ideal circumstances e.g. informal settlements in valleys, woonga-smokers under the bridge and homeless individuals.
These low socio-economic communities often have a strong sense of membership i.e. Individuals are very familiar to other people from within the community, share strong and real friendships, look out for and assist each other in their plight. Personally, I have witnessed this through word-of-mouth referrals, and have began to see the value of “it takes a village to raise a child”. Through this membership, leaders emerge. Individuals who assisted in founding these communities, and others who grew up in them are now becoming involved in programs that address the needs of the communities e.g. CCGs. This is useful as some of its members live within the community, are familiar with its people and have a wealth of local knowledge that is essential in mobilizing toward meeting the needs of its people. However, the vision for the future; as often seen in rural/informal settlements; has not been properly established, which makes them susceptible to change by chance rather than a planned change. With this, the assets (skills, resources etc.) are not properly accounted for, which is not conducive to maximizing the potential of the community.
For example, a community like Kenville has potential to flourish because of its young population. It is a community that requires education in a language its members speak, acceptance and encouragement creativity and the development of a “Yes, We can” attitude. Through this, the community can grow stronger as it rises through its struggle, and resilience can be real and lasting.
As an Occupational Therapy student, opportunities for skills training, health promotion and advocacy for the profession itself has risen and going forward we hope to facilitate a positive contribution to these communities.
Together we will build our dream.
