The CCF operated for 17 years and ran magazines like “Encounter” which featured The New York School Artists and other uniquely “American Art.” The CCF also employed several key members of The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Image 10: The CIA also secretly funded one of the most popular pieces of anti- communist artworks, the animated version of George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” novel. What do you guys think? What’s your favorite period in art history, your favorite famous work and/or your favorite style of art?

so i don’t have one favorite famous work of art, but i absolutely LOVE 20th century oil painting portraits of rich people taken for no other reason than they can?? i must have like 20+ of them on my phone from museums over the years. but my favorite style of art is abstract expressionism, especially clyfford still, willem de kooning, and mark rothko

I feel like I’ve tricked you into thinking I’m more cultured than I am 😂 because I’m so all over the place when it comes to art, because it’s just like I know what I like when I see it?

Omg YES to the 20th Century oil paintings! Rich people just showing that they have money is always a favorite, I’ve seen one where it was a woman surrounded by like 17 fluffy cats and it’s seared in my brain! Love!

Hmm, if I had to pick a period it would probably be the Rococo period because as a maximalist it speaks to me, the playful opulence of it all! Like here is The Swing from Fragonard, I adore everything about it!

As for works I got to see the Primavera by Botticelli this summer and I literally did not want to leave the room. I love Monet’s Waterlilies, we have one at my art museum and it’s my favorite piece in the whole collection. I think the history behind The Three Witches of MacBeth is so fun because it’s literally about boss babes of the 1770s being boss babes.

So I have been in a bit of a romance slump – things have been *fine* but nothing has been hitting, and I knew it was because of me rather because of the books. Which is to say when I got an ARC of Nellie Wilson’s Exhibited, I was *so excited* because I adore everything I’ve read from her, but also a bit nervous.

But I had nothing to worry about.

The third book in Nellie’s Museology series of interconnected standalones, Exhibited follows Jeremy, an exhibit designer who works at a university museum, and Davis, a forest ranger who hires Jeremy to revamp the visitor’s center where he works.

Nellie delivers a tender, slow-burning story that explores attraction and identity between two men in their 30s from very different backgrounds – Jeremy grew up in NYC’s intellectual art world and has always been openly gay, while Davis is from West Virginia, prefers nature to people, and is quietly bi as well as sober. As Jeremy and Davis get to know each other and become more entangled, their stories are told in ways that are deeply respectful of the experiences these characters represent.

Though this is a deeply emotional tale, Nellie’s signature humor and banter is all over it, and characters from previous books pop up along the way – and it is *very* interesting to see them all through Davis’s eyes. And yes, this book does deliver open-door scenes (!!) and is extremely swoony. Seriously. Very seriously.

Also there is a rescue dog, and a GREAT romantic gesture, and an extremely touching scene involving Clyfford Still’s artwork, and I just really loved this a whole lot.

If you’re looking for a book that will make you laugh and cry and swoon in all the best ways, then Exhibited is for you!

Clyfford Still

Clyfford Still had a unique artistic vision and was unwilling to compromise it for money or recognition. As he evolved as an artist, Still’s works transitioned from recognizable images and landscapes to more abstract shapes, colours, and lines to express ideas and feelings on huge canvases. He wanted people to get lost in his works and make their own interpretations of his art.

‘My paintings have no titles because I do not wish them to be considered illustrations or pictorial puzzles’, Still wrote. ‘If properly made visible they speak for themselves.’
