Lloyd and Lee Chumway bobbed their heads in unison as the guitar solo screamed from the speakers of the sleek black Nissan Maxima they were now occupying. Lloyd pounded the last of a Colt 45 out of the can, crushed it, belched, and then tossed it in the back seat where it bounced off the face of Fred Dillard, the owner of said Maxima. He was also the owner of the necktie that now bound up his hands, and the belt that bound up his feet. He did not however own the woman's blouse, tattered and bloodstained, that was stuffed in his mouth. That had belonged to his wife, who now lay in the middle of a cornfield about twelve miles back, spilling blood upon the Illinois earth and probably breathing her last.

Lee bent over and lowered the volume, turning back and looking at the man's frightened face. Fred's face contorted wildly as he tried to blink the droplets of beer out of his eyes.

“He don't seem to like Skynyrd Lloyd!” Lee laughed.

“Damn shame,” Lloyd said, “that's a damn shame.”

“He don't seem to like that beer either.” Lee said.

“I reckon not,” Lloyd smiled, “our lovely guest seems to be more of a wine connosier.”

“Conno-what?” Lee frowned.

“Never-mind little brother,” Lloyd waved at Lee and then said, “Anyways. We need not make fun of our friend. We owe him a debt of gratitude.”

“What for?!” Lee was still frowning.

“For this car you idiot!” Lloyd said. “Thanks for the wheels partner!” He called to the back seat.

Lee looked at Lloyd, then back at their captive, and then back at Lloyd and cackled.

“But it seems that....” Lloyd paused, rummaging around the center console and finding the captive's drivers license which he had stashed there after he had stolen his wallet...”Mr. Dillard here is out of gas,” he continued.

Lee goofy-laughed, “Time for another pit stop Lloyd?!”

“Yes sir Lee!” Lloyd laughed, turning back to the road. “Hate to stop off in all this rain, but we need to dump good ole Fred back there, and get some fuel.”

Fred began to moan behind his gag, Lloyd ignored him, “But first we need to get some food. I'm starving.”

“Me too,” Lee grumbled.

“You're always hungry my boy!” Lloyd smiled.

The headlights of the Maxima reflected off a billboard. It was blue with large orange and teal lettering:

“Lookey there Lee!” Lloyd pointed. Lee squinted through the rain-soaked windshield.

“Great food! Good people!” Lee goofy-laughed.

“Hear that Fred?!” Lloyd smiled, “Maybe I'll order you the steak and eggs before I blow your fucking brains out!”

If Fred wasn't gagged with his dead wife's blouse he would have screamed. The Chumway brothers would not have heard him however because Lloyd was raising the volume up on the stereo again and they were singing along.

“Yeah you don't...have...to live like a refugeee!

Don't have to live like a refugeeeee!”

NFL Mock Draft 2019: Los Angeles Chargers get beefier

The Chargers made large strides last year that no one saw. The Chiefs were amazing fans and media alike with their high scoring offense and starting 4-0 while the Chargers were 2-2 (and were down 17-6 in game 5). People were already writing them off as “same old chargers”. But the chargers fought and persevered. While the chiefs were putting up 50 on Monday Night football, the Chargers were stringing together a 6-game winning streak (a task that no other team in their division could manage). The chargers played consistent, tough football. After finishing with the same record as the #1 seed in the playoffs. They unveiled a version of Quarters defense that had 4 defensive linemen, no linebackers, and 7 defensive backs. The chargers hoped they were able to contain the middle with their 4 defensive linemen and use their defense backs and their speed to contain Lamar Jackson. While this plan worked for the Ravens, the Patriots hoped and prayed for the chargers to use this defense. When the Chargers used the modified quarters, the Patriots ran the ball down their throat. Any time the Patriots ran the ball, the Patriots would get a consistent push up the middle. They wouldn’t out run anyone, but they would get a healthy running game at 4.6 yards and 4 touchdowns. Once they established the run, the defensive backs starting biting on run fakes worse than Kurt Coleman. In a NFL that is attempting to get faster, the Patriots show that the power running game is still useful, in fact they rode the running game to a Super Bowl victory (fun fact, last person to throw a touchdown in the Super Bowl is Nick Foles). If the chargers are going to run this modified Quarters defense they will have to stop the run. They need a space eater who will generate a push. They need someone to force running backs outside to the speed of the team. They need Dexter Lawrence

You can’t teach 6’4”. You can’t teach 342 (ok maybe with a few pizzas, burgers etc etc). The largest player on Clemson who earned the name “Hulk” would be a smashing addition to a stellar defensive line that includes Bosa, Ingram and Brandon Mebane. Adding Lawrence would demand double teams, take the pressure from Mebane in the middle, while forcing one on one match ups for Bosa and Ingram. They would be able to reduce the power runs up the middle and allow the Charger speed to get to the edge, creating a defense that could get pressure without blitzing, and I think that works well

Now a man-eating nose tackle like this won’t have great stats, in fact he only had 15 solo tackles, and 1.5 sacks. Hulk’s job is to smash and let everyone else shine. This pick makes an already impressive line elite. As a run stopper he already has the grade, but what about the passing grade, let me cherry pick something from Pro Football Focus like everyone else does:

Strengths:

Enormous frame with intimidating combination of size and power

Healthier and much quicker in 2018

Impressive athletic ability for his size

Footwork allows disruptive power to travel down the down the line

Agility to defeat or recover quickly from cut blocks

Possesses booming upper-body power

Disengages from single blocks whenever he wants to

Able to thwart seal blocks and mangle down blocks that miss the target

Has potential to eat double teams and let his linebackers roam free

Ball carriers are finished once he gets his hands on them

Punishing bull-rusher with leg drive to constrict pocket space

Weaknesses:

Has been unable to equal impressive production from freshman season

Average rush talent likely to limit draft value

Lacks looseness as rusher to find edges

Basic rush counters relatively ineffective

More reliant upon size over technique at this stage

Gets caved by double teams when he doesn’t sink his post

Inconsistent hand placement/quickness for early control at the point

Occasionally shortcuts flow to the ball causing him to lose his fit

How does the Hulk measure up

Oh he’s a damn monster, posting a wingspan, weight, and bench press in the 96% percentile or better. Lawrence isn’t a flashy pick. But the chargers are fine not being the flashy team. They want to beat them. They want to smash them, and what better way to smash, than with the hulk.

4 NFL teams that deserve the most praise for their 2019 draft class

Retired offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz thought these teams deserve the most praise for their draft class.

The 2019 NFL Draft weekend has come and gone, with so many teams improving with their newly acquired talent, which of course is the goal of the three-day event. Instead of naming winners and losers of the entire draft, or even handing out grades, I’m going to do something slightly different.

Here are the teams I thought drafted extremely well and did the best to address their needs.

Buffalo Bills

Even though I’ve been hard on Josh Allen after a subpar rookie season, that doesn’t cloud my thoughts about Buffalo. I can recognize when a franchise has put together a good offseason, which the Bills have.

Earlier this offseason, I praised their free agent signings, all of which addressed putting weapons and protection around Allen. They entered the draft with the same purpose: Get more pieces to help Allen succeed.

After they selected Ed Oliver — who they absolutely couldn’t pass up — at No. 9, the Bills drafted Oklahoma offensive lineman Cody Ford. He’s a long-term solution at either tackle spot, or possibly guard. He’s physical and loves to finish. We saw last year how one player like this, Colts guard Quenton Nelson, can change the attitude of an entire offensive line.

The Bills also added speedy running back/slot receiver Devin Singletary from Florida Atlantic and multi-purpose tight end Dawson Knox. Knox averaged 18.9 yards per catch and can be a downfield threat for Allen, as well as excellent blocker in the run game.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles entered the draft with just a few holes and while they didn’t address linebacker (no one was available later in the first round), they did build around Carson Wentz. That’s not a bad thing.

Left tackle Jason Peters is back for 2019 in what will most likely be his final NFL season. Lane Johnson is firmly at right tackle and won’t be moved to left. Enter Andre Dillard from Washington State. Dillard was the best pass-blocking tackle in the draft, with a need to improve in the run game. The Eagles are a perfect fit for Dillard because they have outstanding offensive line coaches who will get the most from him. Dillard, while getting stronger and learning the finer points of run blocking, can sit behind Peters until the veteran retires.

The Eagles also drafted Stanford wide receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside, a big-bodied 50-50 ball catcher. Arcega-Whiteside is a former all-state high school basketball player and it’s clear watching him on the field. He’s excellent at boxing out corners and high-point catching balls, especially in the red zone.

The reason I love this pick is what it can do for the offense. If teams want to double Zach Ertz, Arcega-Whiteside will be singled up. He will win those matchups with most corners in the NFL. If you want to see more of Arcega-Whiteside, here’s a decent highlight video.

Arizona Cardinals

I rightfully have bashed Arizona’s handling of Josh Rosen, but make no mistake, the Cardinals did work in the draft. They drafted the best quarterback in this class and then began to load up on players around him.

With the pick acquired in the Rosen trade, the Cardinals draft wide receiver Andy Isabella from UMass. According to Pro Football Focus, he was the highest-graded college WR in their database, which only dates back to 2014. Nonetheless, Isabella can fly and Kyler Murray can let it loose in his direction. The Cardinals also took Hakeem Butler, a big WR out of Iowa State, who can be another down-the-field weapon for Murray.

On the defensive side, the Cardinals added the most complete corner in the draft, Byron Murphy, with the first pick of the second day. Murphy is a shutdown corner who can tackle extremely well and will be awesome across from Patrick Peterson. Then there’s fifth-round Alabama safety Deionte Thompson, who is a hard-hitting box player.

What’s best about these picks, and most of the Cardinals’ picks, is the value. They got these players in positions of value, often close to a round later than expected.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints had one glaring hole on their team. That was center, following the retirement of Max Unger. The Saints drafted Erik McCoy in the second round, as they didn’t have a first-round pick. McCoy is an immediate starter for them. He’s highly intelligent and an instinctual player who can handle any style of run play, which is exactly what the Saints do. They are extremely multiple in the run game.

But most importantly, he will quickly earn the trust of Drew Brees. Brees can look at McCoy to lead this unit and get them heading in the right direction before the snap.

Does Philly Overvalue Carson Wentz?

The Eagles’ franchise quarterback comes in with an absolutely underwhelming 82 overall rating in Madden 20. Look, I get it, the guy has to prove that he can stay healthy and his mobility appeared to be a bit limited as he recovered from tearing up his knee in 2018. If we follow a similar line of thinking, it makes some sense that Deshaun Watson, who also suffered a comparable injury in the same season, has the same overall rating. However, I need someone at EA Sports to explain the presence of Baker-freaking-Mayfield as a higher-rated 83. Will he put up some killer numbers with OBJ and Jarvis Landry streaking downfield? Of course. Has he put together the same kind of sustained excellence over the majority of a season like Wentz or even Watson? I say nay. Jared Goff being ahead of Wentz is nearly as perplexing, though I imagine it’s just a masterful job of trolling Eagles fans. Though, it has made our office buzz and wonder… do we overrate Carson Wentz?

Aaron Rodgers not in the Top-5?

In what world is Aaron Rodgers not a Top-5 QB in the NFL? Patrick Mahomes leading the list makes sense as he’s the reigning, defending, undisputed league MVP from a year ago and is the lead among numerous sportsbooks to do the same in 2019-20. Tom Brady’s placement as a close #2 is fair, but that’s where the wheels fall off. Philip Rivers is the THIRD-BEST QUARTERBACK IN THE NFL? He’s two full points ahead of Drew Brees? Really? Andrew Luck is rated in line with Brees? Russell Wilson -the modern-day Michael “Run around as my O-Line collapses and hope I don’t die” Vick- gets a boost due to his speed and elusiveness. For my money, flip Rodgers and Rivers and I’ll calm down.

I don’t think Trubisky is by any means a Top-10 or even Top-15 quarterback, but holy shnikies this is bad. Alex Smith is rated higher, despite suffering one of the most gruesome leg injuries we’ve seen in years. Lamar Jackson’s NINETY-FOUR speed rating likely led to his one point lead in the overall category, but does anyone really think Trubisky is roughly the same player as journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick?

Nickfolean Kryptonite

Former Eagles QB and Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles has been installed as a 77 overall player, the exact same rating as Alex Smith. Is he really worse than Jimmy Garoppolo? I’d say no. Worse than Matthew Stafford? Sure.

A Giant Disappointment

Eli Manning is the 36th overall rated QB with an overall score of 72. That makes him the lowest-rated starting QB in the NFC East behind Wentz (82), Dak Prescott (81), and Smith (77). The Giants’ first round pick Daniel Jones comes in way below Manning with an overall rating of 63, a mere point ahead of third-stringer Kyle Lauletta.

Fletcher Cox, at 96, is the highest rated Eagles player in the game and the only Bird in the top 15. Jason Kelce is second, listed at 94, and Zach Ertz is third, given a 93 rating.

Desean Jaccson got an 85.

They ranked Ronald Darby as the best Birds corner, with an 82. Avonte Maddox was second with a 78 and Jalen Mills got a 74. Sidney Jones is a 76 and Cre’Von LeBlanc a 73.

First round draft pick Andre Dillard is rated a 70, which feels low to me, but of course I don’t know how you rate a guy who has never played an NFL game.

Stefen Wisniewski was rated 66, which is really low. Wis is a good player.

Rick Lovato, the long snapper, is listed as a backup tight end and rated a 41.

Nate Sudfeld and Clayton Thorson are both in the bottom five of the Eagles list, with a 57 and 56, respectively.

Cox, Ertz, and Kelce all were given a 98 awareness rating.

The fastest Bird? Madden has a five way tie between Maddox, Jaccson, Darby, Shelton Gibson, and Josh Hawkins, all given a 93.

Blake Countess and Maddox have the Birds’ highest acceleration rating, a 94.

Maddox was given a team-high 96 agility rating.

Brandon Brooks was given a team-high 96 strength rating.

The 2019 NFL Draft is finally here, and the buzz and rumors will continue throughout Thursday. Some will be credible, some will be completely bogus.

There will be talk of trades, even for the No. 1 pick. Your favorite draft crush could land on your most hated rival. Players ranked highly by draft nerds will inevitably fall or even go undrafted.

Basically, every mock draft will be wildly inaccurate. And yet, here we are with one final first round mock draft for 2019. But don’t worry. There will be more mock drafts to come. There’s a second-round mock at the conclusion of the first round. There’s a 2020 NFL mock draft shortly after 2019 draft ends. As long as you keep reading them, I’ll keep writing them.

But for now, this is the last one of the first round for 2019.
