♡! kdrama recs or any series for that matter w just vibes no plot, but its not all happy its morbid at times. you just have such good recs <3
ahh, thank you for the kind words! i'd be honor to rec some series, although i'm not sure how helpful i might be in this particular genre. most of the kdramas i'm recommending below are ones that i've heard are good + fit your description (+ are also on my watch list, and i tend to be rather choosy about which dramas i put on my watch list, so i'm hoping that these are genuinely good!).
i feel like most dramas, unlike movies, are much more plot heavy than vibes--mostly because so many dramas are modeled in a way where they want viewers to stay tuned for the next episode being aired, but . . . out of the dramas that i have watched and picked to put on here, they're either more character-driven, and the plot's a little more . . . hm. circular? i'll go with the term circular, which can sometimes feel like no plot! in any case, here's my recs!
also, as a warning! since you asked for dramas that can be rather morbid at times, i've also added tw warnings about the specific morbidness/kind-of-sensitive things that might be included in each drama recommended.
my mister (available on netflix, viki, dramacool, kissasian, etc)
Tumblr media
my mister is always going to be number one on my list in terms of “not really a plot, just vibes” kdrama recs. there definitely is a plot going on, but to be honest, it’s definitely more emphasizing the characters: an older man, who’s working a mildly unsatisfying job, an a younger woman working as a temp within the same company. one thing leads to the next, and they wind up connecting to each other and also helping each other get through their struggles.
this is just . . . a really beautiful show. it brought me so much comfort when it first came out in 2018, and it still gives me a lot of comfort these days. the characters in this show are quite honestly so real, but more than that, i think it’s a genuinely healing show--it’s all focused on how to live a happy life, and it’s just . . . gahhhh, there are so many scenes that just capture the desire to live while also not wanting to live. the romanticization of listening to someone breathe and so on and so forth. cannot recommend this enough!
2. lost (available on dramacool, qiy)
tw: suicidal thoughts, suicide, miscarriage, domestic abuse.
Tumblr media
this is definitely one of those shows where like . . . not a whole lot happens, and yet every single episode feels like everything’s happening, just because of the sheer emotional weight behind each scene. unfortunately, lost was named one of the worst dramas to come out of 2021, but i can firmly, with all my heart, dispute that argument because this show was absolutely beautiful. (my personal belief is that snot-nosed reviewers called it the worst drama because they either didn’t understand the themes or because they didn’t like that they did understand the themes.)
basically, this show is about a young man and an older woman somehow connecting. the man is an escort of sorts, and the woman is a cleaner, although she once used to work at a publishing company. both are absolutely, utterly lost about where they should be in their lives. somehow, though, they start to bring each other comfort.
this show is an absolute gem. it’s a bit dark at times, but i ultimately felt weirdly healed by the time i finished it. very quiet, and yet very comforting. it feels like someone’s putting a tangerine in your cold hands.
3. d.p. (available on netflix)tw: bullying, domestic abuse, suicide.
tw: bullying, domestic abuse, suicide.
Tumblr media
as you may or may not know, everyone who identifies as a male in south korea need to serve military time in their twenties. this is all because of the armistice between north and south korea (because north korea can technically attach south korea at any time)--and as a result, there needs to be ready soldiers on standby. in dp, you're following two young men who work as deserter pursuit officers, meaning that they're supposed to find the men who deserted their post while serving military time. (because that happens!)
this show is really . . . brutal. there’s some action, some humor, but ultimately, it’s just about how terrible the military is, and exactly why someone might want to run away in the first place. i put it under the “no plot, just vibes” list because the plot feels so circular in that way--and there’s . . . there’s def a vibe going on in this show, because the actors + the filmwork + the music just kinda suck you right into the world of these characters. (fair warning, it’s a rather isolating feeling. that said, though, if you’re in the mental place to take that, then this is a quick enough show to get through it, because it’s only 6 episodes i believe.)
4. move to heaven (available on netflix)
tw: death, grief
Tumblr media
while this drama definitely has a plot, i thought it was a lot more character-driven than anything else, which is why i put this here.
this show is about an autistic young man who had worked as a trauma cleaner with his late father. now that his father’s passed away, the uncle comes to live with our protagonist, and together they resume their business. in the case you didn’t know already, trauma cleaners are people who clean up the living spaces of those who have passed away--so that leaves us with a lot of quieter stories about the lives that those who passed might have led. this is a very quiet show, genuinely beautiful and exploring grief and death in the most compelling way.
5. my liberation notes (available on netflix, dramacool, kissasian, etc)
tw: i don’t know, because i didn’t watch this one, but i’ve been meaning to!
Tumblr media
so i haven’t actually watched this show, although i’ve been meaning to, especially since it was written by the same person who wrote my mister. i did watch the first episode though, and i loved what i saw--i just didn’t continue because it seemed to hit a little too hard at the time and needed to not at the moment lololol
but from what i’ve gathered, this show is about a trio of siblings who all feel rather stuck in their lives at the moment. something something wanting to be loved, something something wanting to actually feel proud of the life they’re living. i’ve heard from my friends that it’s genuinely one of the best dramas out there, despite its low ratings--but then again, i don’t think low ratings mean anything in terms of quality. just from the first episode, i could tell there was a lot of care and thought put into the show, so i personally can’t wait to watch the rest, once i feel mentally prepared for it!
6. just between lovers (available on viki, netflix, kissasian, dramacool, etc)
tw: i don’t really know, because i also haven’t watched this one, but i think some big accident happens at the start?
Tumblr media
i haven’t watched this show either, although i’ve been meaning to for a while now! essentially, this show is about two people who were both impacted by an accident--and upon meeting each other, i believe they’re able to help each other work through the other’s trauma. from what i’ve heard, though, it can be rather heavy, but apparently, it made people feel slightly more hopeful, so maybe there’s something to be said about that!

How ESG Factors Drive Sustainable Growth in the Online Grocery Sector
Grocery CEOs, consumers and grocers envisage online shopping as the next big thing, spurred by technological advancements and greater convenience. The COVID-19 onslaught was partly attributed to online grocery flooding the market. While leading players and startups jumped on the bandwagon, ESG watchdogs were wary of the sustainable impact the industry would have on the planet. Stakeholders are expected to harness gender equality, fair wages, waste reduction, responsible sourcing of farm produce and sound corporate governance.
The ease of browsing, getting items ticked off and quick delivery have been a revelation—a delivery service delivering to multiple homes has negated the need to drive to the store. More than 17 million metric tons of CO2 pollution are attributed to weekly household trips to the grocery store, a report cited by the U.S. EPA claimed. Incumbent players have furthered investments in electric vehicles (EVs) to offset greenhouse gas emissions. In April 2022, India-based Swiggy, a food delivery company, joined forces with EVIFY to enable grocery and food delivery through EVs in Surat, Gujarat.
Industry leaders are likely to emphasize upstream transportation (farm-to-retail) and foster last-mile transportation—pushing for deliveries and offsetting personal trips. Centralized grocery delivery services and fulfillment centers have brought a paradigm shift in minimizing GHG emissions and food loss. State-of-the-art technologies, including predictive analytics, can provide the silver bullet to prevent pilferage and streamline sourcing. Besides, boosting access to affordable and high-quality fresh food, along with the focus on diversity, integrity and transparency, will remain instrumental for a circular economy.  Is your business one of participants to the Online Grocery Industry? Contact us for focused consultation around ESG Investing, and help you build sustainable business practices
Kroger and BigBasket Invest in Climate Strategy for a Sustainable Future
The online retail boom and an emphasis on speed and user experience—instant delivery—have disrupted e-commerce business models. Brands with sustainability strategies appeared resilient during the COVID-19 outbreak, banking on online shopping to conserve raw materials and minimize GHG emissions. Kroger is poised to establish a new Scope 3 goal for supply chain emissions reduction in line with its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitment. The American retail giant has set 2030 sustainable packaging goals, such as using 100% recyclable, reusable and/or compostable packaging.
Amidst emerging climate risks and opportunities, Kroger inferred using infrared refrigerant leak-detection technology in 2,000 stores. Meanwhile, in 2021, Bigbasket, a TATA Enterprise-owned online grocery retailer, teamed up with New Leaf Dynamic to install a biomass-powered chiller that can save 186 tons of CO2 annually. The Indian giant cited in its Green Report 2022 that it produced 5,457,000 kWh of solar power (reducing 1,670 tons of GHG emissions) in 2022 and 5,458 electric delivery vehicles helped minimize 7012 tons of CO2 emissions during the period.
Amazon Fresh Navigates Changing Social Landscape
Amidst rampant layoffs and the prevalence of workplace injuries, grocery warehouses and fulfillment centers have prioritized the social pillar. In January 2023, Amazon announced over 18,000 job cuts, denting workers across industry verticals, including grocery stores. People employed as supply chain managers, program managers, software engineers and store designers bore the brunt in online grocery delivery and fresh stores businesses. That said, the American behemoth inferred in May 2023 that it had poured CDN 25 billion since 2010 in its Canadian operations, including job creation and establishment of data centers and fulfillment centers. In September 2021, the U.S. giant committed USD 1.2 billion to offer 300,000 employees education and skills training programs till 2025.
Incumbent players have upped investments to make the workplace safer and foster a healthy environment. Amazon has a team of health coordinators, physiotherapists and advisors. The occupational doctors perform medical checks and report trends in major risk areas.
The U.S. e-commerce company has augmented diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts to underscore its sustainability quotient. In 2021, it committed to a 30% rise year over year in hiring U.S. black employees in level 4 through level 7 from the preceding year’s hiring. The multinational company warrants 100% of employees to take inclusion training.
Governance Key for Relentless Sustainable Goals of Rakuten and Walmart
Sound corporate behavior is second to none for an agile business process and an inclusive global system that complements ethical business practices. Rakuten creates a list of ESG themes with the assistance of external experts and refers to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) Materiality Map.
The Japanese company has appointed Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) to undergird compliance management. It has banked on a risk-based approach to define high-risk issues and implement measures, such as prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing; prohibition of bribery and corruption; and adherence to competition, antitrust and other related laws.
Rakuten has propelled board diversity—outside directors account for 58.3% of the BoD, while 25% are foreign directors. Meanwhile, Walmart expects Board members to disclose their race/ethnicity and gender annually. Its board had 27% women and 18% directors who are racially/ethnically diverse (as of April 2023).
Millennials and Gen Z want the e-commerce sector to foster social contributions, operate in a responsible supply chain and bolster transparency. ESG reporting could be pronounced, prompting online incumbents to further their investments in sustainability. Grand View Research anticipates the global online grocery market size to depict upward growth through 2030. Investments in the circular economy can create momentum and be a differentiating factor in an ever-growing competition in the online grocery business.

Tumblr media
Overview of the Bio-Energy Market:
The production, delivery, and use of energy obtained from biomass resources are all part of the bioenergy market. The term "biomass" refers to organic materials that can be used to create energy through a variety of processes, such as combustion, gasification, and biochemical conversion, such as plants, agricultural residues, forestry residues, and organic waste. Biomass may be refilled through sustainable practises, which is why bioenergy is regarded as a renewable energy source.
The global bioenergy market size was valued at $102.5 billion in 2020, and is expected to reach $217.8 billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of 7.6% from 2021 to 2030.
Key Factors Driving the Bio-Energy Market:
Transition to Renewable Energy: The bioenergy sector is significantly influenced by the global move to renewable energy sources. As a renewable and environmentally friendly substitute for fossil fuels, bioenergy helps to slow global warming by lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
Energy Independence and Security: By utilising a variety of energy sources, bioenergy can help with energy security. Countries with plentiful biomass resources can increase their energy independence and decrease their reliance on imported fossil fuels.
Government Policies and Incentives: Countless countries around the world have put policies and incentives in place to encourage the use of bioenergy. These policies stimulate the creation and application of bioenergy technology and include feed-in tariffs, renewable energy objectives, tax incentives, and subsidies.
Concerns for the environment and carbon neutrality: Bioenergy is regarded as a carbon-neutral energy source because the carbon dioxide.
Waste Management and Circular Economy: Bio-energy can play a role in waste management by utilizing organic waste materials for energy production. This contributes to the circular economy concept, where waste is seen as a resource, promoting sustainable resource utilization and waste reduction.
Technological Advancements and Efficiency Improvements: Advances in bio-energy technologies, such as improved biomass conversion processes, biofuel production techniques, and efficient combustion systems, enhance the efficiency and economic viability of bio-energy. The French government will encourage the patching of clothes
Tumblr media
The French Secretary of State for Ecology, Bérangère Couillard, announced recently the forthcoming creation of a bonus for French people who decide to have their worn clothes and shoes repaired. A way to limit the waste caused by the textile industry, one of the most polluting in the world.
Holes in pants? Shirts without buttons? Worn out shoes? Don't throw any more! This Tuesday, the French Secretary of State in charge of Ecology, Bérangère Couillard, announced the creation of a bonus for the “repair” of textile goods. [1]  This must be put in place “from October” to encourage customers to have their clothes or shoes patched rather than throwing them away and buying new ones.
"From October, consumers will be able to be accompanied in the repair of their clothes and shoes," explained Bérangère Couillard during a visit to Paris of the premises of an incubator devoted to responsible fashion, La Caserne. [2]
This “repair bonus” for the textile sector will be endowed with a fund of 154 million euros over the period 2023-2028, the office of the Secretary of State had previously explained. The pricing of the aid offered must be between 6 and 25 euros, explained Bérangère Couillard on Tuesday.
Recreate jobs
The Secretary of State “invites all sewing workshops and shoemakers to join the system, to be labeled” by the eco-organization Refashion[3]  that manages the fund and the label for the State.
The aid could be, for example, 7 euros to redo a heel and reach 10 to 25 euros for a lining. These will be discounts applied directly to the repair invoice.
"The goal is to support all those who do the repairs", detailed Bérangère Couillard, referring to the workshops but "also the brands" that offer this service with the hope of "recreating jobs".
700,000 tons of clothes in the trash In France, 3.3 billion clothes, shoes and pieces of household linen were put on the market in 2022, i.e. 500,000 more than in 2021, according to the organisation Refashion which was tasked by the government with supporting industry towards a more circular economy.
The French “throw away 700,000 tons of clothing each year”, recalled the Secretary of State, specifying that two thirds “end up in landfills”.
A highly polluting industry
On the model of the household appliance repair[4] bonus, the aid is part of a vast reform of the textile sector, one of the most polluting industries on the planet, initiated by the government since the end of 2022.
Among its objectives: to force brands to have more traceability, to financially support organisations specialising in the reuse and second life of clothing or to structure a recycling sector.
The reform provided for by the anti-waste law for a circular economy (Agec Law)[5] is based in particular on the billion euros of eco-contributions from producers, importers and distributors which should be released over the period 2023-2028 under the "polluter pays" principle.
Fast fashion in the sights of the government
During her visit, the Secretary of State in charge of Ecology, Bérangère Couillard, denounced a model of fast fashion "destructive for our planet, for the human conditions of the countries which welcome their production and also destructive for the textile sector which may not recover".[6]
She said she wanted to "fight with determination" the economic model of the emblematic Chinese fast fashion company, Shein[7], which she considers responsible for "tremendous damage".

Cement products and their potential to contribute to carbon capture and storage initiatives
Cement product is one of the most crucial components of the construction industry, used in a wide variety of building and infrastructure projects. However, it is the harsh reality that the cement industry is also one of the significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. According to the report of the International Energy Agency, concrete manufacturing is responsible for 8% of global carbon emissions. In the meeting of COP 26 2021, India promised to cut its emissions to net zero by 2070. As a result, cement industries now have come up with a question “What is the role of a cement company in promoting green environment initiatives?” Therefore, there is a growing interest among cement manufacturers in exploring the potential of cement products to contribute to carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiatives.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is something where a stream of carbon dioxide from industrial sources is isolated, treated, and then moved to a place for long-term storage. To make this possible, sufficient financial expenses, resources, and technology must be made available from developed countries. Carbon capture and storage involves capturing carbon dioxide emissions from industrial processes, such as steel and cement production, or from the burning of fossil fuels in power generation and storing them in underground geological formations or other long-term storage options.
There are several ways in which the cement industry contributes to carbon capture and storage initiative. The cement industry is a significant source of CO2 emissions due to the chemical process involved in cement production. During cement production, limestone is heated to very high temperatures, which releases CO2 as a byproduct. This process, known as calcination, accounts for around 60% of the total emissions associated with cement production. Since the cement industry itself is a source of carbon dioxide emission, it directly captures CO2 from the cement manufacturing process. This is done using a technology known as carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). CCUS involves capturing CO2 emissions from industrial processes, purifying the CO2, and then transporting it to a storage site where it can be stored permanently.
Another approach to using cement products in CCS initiatives is to use the cement itself as a storage medium for CO2. This can be done by adding CO2-absorbing materials to the cement during production. These materials, such as fly ash or slag, react with CO2 to form stable compounds that are trapped within the cement matrix.
In this area, the research is still in the initial stages. India has targeted a reduction of 45% in emission intensity by 2030. It indicates that CCUS can provide a range of opportunities to convert the captured CO2 to different value-added products like green urea, food, beverage, building materials like cement and concrete, chemicals like methanol and ethanol, polymers and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) with wide market opportunities in India, thus contributing substantially to a circular economy. CCUS will also add 100 billion to 150 billion dollars to the Indian GDP over the next 30 years, thus expected to generate 8–10 million job opportunities in India.
Several cement companies like Wonder Cement, Ambuja Cement, Ultratech Cement, Dalmia Cement, Shree Cement, etc are already looking to explore CCUS. Suman Bery, the Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog said that CCUS can enable the production of clean products while still utilizing our rich endowments of coal, reducing imports and thus leading to an Atma Nirbhar Indian economy.
While there is still much research to be done in this area, the potential of cement products to contribute to CCS initiatives is clear. By capturing and storing CO2 emissions, using CO2-absorbing materials in cement production, and developing new technologies such as carbonated concrete and algae-based cement, the cement industry could play a significant role.

The Canopy: Michelin headquarter's renovated reception area
Implanted on the Carmes site of Clermont-Ferrand since the company’s inception in the late 19th century, Michelin’s Canopy acquired its status as the company's headquarters in the 2000s. The project, delivered in 2021, and carried out in partnership between Encore Heureux Architectes, Construire, and Base, aims to embody the image of the group in a welcoming, unique, and cohesive space while inserting itself in an emblematic public square. The headquarters’ innovative new reception area symbolizes Michelin’s reinvention, conceived to face 21st-century challenges head-on; a design and operation that were conceptualized from a circular economy perspective, mindful of environmental impacts.

“For 130 years, Michelin has reinvented itself time and time again to adapt to its environment. Today, the company is proud to inaugurate its renovated headquarters reception area,” explains Florent Menegaux, President of the Michelin Group. “The historic manufacturing headquarters - the very same place in which our small rubber bullet company was founded in 1889 - needed a new setting to project Michelin into the future.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A new identity
To respond to Michelin’s wish of renewing itself without erasing its past, the project’s committed position is to offer an extension of the current headquarters over two levels. The extension is provided with an energetic new façade that seeks to appreciate its historic structure. The new project connects the current buildings, while simultaneously embodying a reception area and the group’s main entrance. It also acts as a permeable interface between the company’s private spaces and the public square, the latter of which was also renovated in a development plan conducted by the city and Michelin Group. From outline to delivery, the conception of the architectural program, and the project’s design, unfolded within the remit of an architectural consulting period. This method of continuous presence and on-site follow-up allowed for a greater understanding of the group’s identity while introducing a mindful practice that recognized the residents’ needs and adapted the program accordingly.

A simple and fundamental idea permeated the overall project suggested by Encore Heureux: “Bringing a potential vision to life for such an emblematic company was a challenge. The headquarters’ future could only be decided upon in collaboration with the company and within the company itself," explains Nicola Delon, founding partner of Encore Heureux. “This idea went hand in hand through an architectural consulting period with a studio set up at the heart of the company. Dialogue and workshops with Michelin teams truly became a cornerstone of the design process behind the transformative headquarters program."
A multi-faceted and inventive program
The main challenge the project addressed was that of connecting heterogeneous spaces between themselves in a consistent union intended to receive thousands of visitors daily. The tropical glasshouse, initiated by Edouard Michelin on the plaza in the early 2000s, held an uncertain future; it was preserved in the architectural program and integrated into the visitor’s experience. The glasshouse features the logo, acting as a symbol of the group’s values of transparency and openness towards the city and the world.
Also Read: Easy Guide To Choose A Color Palette For Your Space The tree-lined plaza extends to the edges of Carmes square, provided with furniture, greenery, and water displays to ensure freshness in the summertime. The Carmes site, historically reserved for Michelin employees, now offers public access. It features versatile exhibition spaces, a store, the glasshouse museum, and the welcoming Café Equateur. Working areas are adapted to new jobs and more collaborative working methods, and the order of the architectural program evolves to lead visitors from the public area to the company’s private spaces.
A design anchored in contemporary challenges
The Canopy is more than a reception building. Its structure responds to two primary challenges: transparency and proximity on the one hand, and a low carbon footprint on the other. The choice of transparency is embodied by the vast glass façade, sheltered from the sun by the wooden awnings that cover its 160-meter length, which provides the new headquarters with its unique identity. Curves are prevalent in architectural design and furniture, mirroring those of Michelin’s tires. Consumption of cement was extremely limited, in favour of sustainably-sourced, repurposed, and local materials. Particular attention was attached to the local area, and thus an overwhelming majority of companies that worked on the construction are local. The use of regional materials was a common goal that aimed to implement simple constructive principles without compromising the site’s industrial nature, such as the use of steel for the structure, or the decision to make the grid and frames visible.

Biffa’s Grangemouth DRS revamp gathers pace
New Post has been published on https://petnews2day.com/pet-industry-news/pet-travel-news/biffas-grangemouth-drs-revamp-gathers-pace/
Biffa’s Grangemouth DRS revamp gathers pace
Biffa bought the long-established plastics recovery business Green Circle Polymers, based on the Abbotsinch Industrial Estate near Falkirk, for £10 million in 2021 (see letsrecycle.com story).
As official logistics service partner to the DRS, Biffa is now redeveloping and regenerating the former plastics plant to ensure it can cope with the surge of material expected once the scheme comes into force (see letsrecycle.com story).
Biffa is currently replacing the roof of the building and says it will soon build a new weighbridge and offices.
The company says it will use noise-dampening materials to construct the facility and will install new machinery to separate and count bottles and cans in the new year.
Once Scotland launches its DRS, Grangemouth will form part of a network of facilities that will count, sort and bale all the plastic, glass and aluminium drinks containers collected through the scheme. The material will then be sold to be recycled back into bottles and cans.
Biffa says the new Grangemouth facility will create 130 jobs, from operatives and drivers, to administrators, supervisors and managers. Recruitment will start in the spring.
‘Key role’
Gavin Money, Biffa’s DRS operations director, said: “Working closely with the scheme administrator, Circularity Scotland, we’re progressing well with the exciting and ambitious plans for the launch of DRS in Scotland, which will see new recycling infrastructure developed across the country.

Gavin Money, Biffa’s DRS operations director
“Grangemouth will play a key role, handling some of the billions of plastic, glass and metal drinks containers collected each year from across Scotland.
“The town has good transport links, a rich history and experience of recycling, and a strong and knowledgeable workforce.”
Biffa says it is also working with Circularity Scotland to explore the opportunity to build a PET recycling plant in Scotland to support the scheme and deliver further employment opportunities.
DRS
From 16 August 2023, if a premises sells drinks to consumers in Scotland then it must provide a return point to accept empty bottles and cans.
Under the DRS, consumers will pay a 20p deposit when purchasing a drink in a single-use container made from aluminium
Under the DRS, consumers will pay a 20p deposit when purchasing a drink in a single-use container made from PET plastic, steel, aluminium or glass. The deposit will be refunded when the empty container is returned.
A pilot DRS delivered by Zero Waste Scotland and funded by the Scottish Government launched on the Orkney Islands last week and will run until the full nationwide roll-out of the scheme next year (see letsrecycle.com story).
Biffa announced that Circularity Scotland had awarded it a 10-year contract to provide logistics, sorting and counting services for the Scottish DRS by in July (see letsrecycle.com story).
Under the contract, Biffa will collect bottles and cans from around 30,000 locations across Scotland and build and operate eight bulking stations and three counting centres, of which the Grangemouth facility is one (see letsrecycle.com story).

This is a viewpoint editorial by Hermann Vivier, co-founder of The Surfer Kids and Bitcoin Ekasi. On Aug. 5 2021, Joey Olden and Luthando Ndabambi strolled into JCC Camp, an area on the borders of Mossel Bay, South Africa. They had an objective: discover an area corner shop ready to offer them something for bitcoin. Their ultimate success later on that afternoon (when they purchased 2 cool beverages with sats sent out over the Lightning Network) might be called the minute Bitcoin Ekasi was born. Above: Aug. 5, 2021-- Bitcoin Ekasi is born. But the seeds that grew the job were planted long in the past. I was initially presented to Bitcoin in late 2013, following the banking crisis in Cyprus My other half and I run a surf-tourism company and, since she's Russian, we're mostly concentrated on the Eastern European and Russian markets. The crisis in Cyprus (together with the subsequent bailouts and associated confiscation of deposits) impacted lots of Russians and when I discovered Bitcoin-- thanks to a couple of early printed editions of Bitcoin Magazine and a pal who had actually purchased some on Mt. Gox-- it got my attention. On March, 25, 2013, a EUR10 billion global bailout by the European Central Bank, International Monetary Fund and others was revealed. This in return for Cyprus accepting close the nation's second-largest bank, the Cyprus Popular Bank, enforcing a one-time levy on all uninsured deposits there and taking around 48% of uninsured deposits in the Bank of Cyprus, the island's biggest industrial bank. A minority percentage of it was held by people of other nations (a lot of whom from Russia) and 47.5% of all bank deposits above EUR100,000 were taken. Like everyone, I did not right away comprehend what Bitcoin was or how it worked. I still do not comprehend a great deal of the finer technical information. It didn't take long to understand that, whatever this thing was, if what was composed in that publication were real, those individuals would not have had their cash arbitrarily taken if their cash had actually been in self-custodied bitcoin rather than a Cypriot bank. After having actually purchased a little bitcoin near the top in 2013 and doing my research when the cost crashed, we began accepting bitcoin payments from surf-trip customers in mid-2015 Unravel Surf Travel - KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, 2015 The very first Russian and Ukrainian dispute had actually broken out and, as an outcome of sanctions, sometimes bitcoin was the only method to get payments. On July 17, 2014, the United States extended its transactions-ban to 2 banks, Gazprombank and Vnesheconombank and, on Sept. 12, 2014, enforced sanctions on Russia's biggest bank, Sberbank. This impacted the capability of both normal Ukrainains and Russians to make worldwide transfers and, paradoxically, our very first surf-trip bitcoin payment (in May 2015) originated from Ukrainian travelers who were not able to pay as an outcome of sanctions versus Russia. Unravel Surf Travel - Mozambique, 2018 Fast forward to late2019 Episode 179 of the "What Bitcoin Did" podcast was my intro to Bitcoin Beach The concept of proactively constructing a circular Bitcoin economy made good sense and held terrific appeal. If Bitcoin was to provide on its pledge, it would need to become utilized for daily functions. And, doing this in a marginalized neighborhood, like El Zonte in El Salvador, appeared like a gorgeous illustration of the truth that there was no useful factor it could not be embraced anywhere else. It negated numerous of the typical fallacies one hears when speaking about mass adoption: it's too unstable; it's too intricate; it's just helpful for crooks and drug dealerships, and so on, and so on Listening to that interview with Michael Peterson, I recognized that we had the platform to do something comparable. Along with our tourist service my partner and I co-founded a little non-profit, The Surfer Kids, in2010 It was developed as a donation-based
company and the initial concept was to provide travelers some insight into what life resembled for 90% of South Africans, without taking part in the "let's- drive-through-the-slum" type tourist. We introduced a program that taught browsing to kids particularly from impoverished locations on a weekly basis and enabled a more positive interaction in between residents and travelers. By 2019 The Surfer Kids had actually grown and progressed into a program serving 40 kids going to browse sessions 5 days a week, throughout the year. The Surfer Kids - 2016 In 2021 Bitcoin Magazine offered me a platform to compose, which resulted in a podcast interview on By the Horns and, as an outcome, The Surfer Kids program got its very first bitcoin contribution in mid-2021 That was the last piece of the puzzle and the minute when the rubber actually struck the roadway. I might visualize the useful execution of the job, now called Bitcoin Ekasi. Link to ingrained Tweet. I approached The Surfer Kids' coaches, particularly our Senior Coach, Luthando, and proposed the concept. He 'd never ever become aware of Bitcoin prior to (besides from fraudsters) so, initially, we 'd invest 2 months talking about Bitcoin, me attempting to impart as much understanding as possible within a brief area of time. Second, Luthando took that recently obtained understanding and began talking with the owners of corner shops in the town, describing the possible useful advantages of accepting bitcoin as payment. The Surfer Kids' Senior Coach-- Luthando He came across a great deal of resistance. The majority of store owners thought (and numerous still do) that it's all one giant fraud. Many of his time was invested not so much discussing Bitcoin, however merely showing its ease of usage. Mobile applications like Bitrefill, Paxful and (more just recently) Azteco were important in revealing individuals that, yes, bitcoin remained in reality genuine cash. An individual's disposition would extremely rapidly modification from suspicion to interest as they experienced bitcoin-- transferred into a wallet by themselves phone-- being utilized to purchase mobile credit which got here near instantly with Bitrefill. Or withdrawing money from an atm, in spite of not having a checking account, with just a pin number, sent out by a complete stranger, who wanted to purchase bitcoin from them on Paxful. Store owners were filled with shock when we transformed coupons, which they currently equipped, into bitcoin with Azteco. In this method Luthando onboarded our very first shop (Kwallos Shop, owned by Nosihle and her spouse Vuyisa) in early August 2021 and at that point we started supplementing his existing fiat wage with bitcoin, which he might now invest at that shop. For 2 months Bitcoin Ekasi stayed absolutely nothing more than that. I continued to inform Luthando about all things Bitcoin and he would go into the municipality, invest his bitcoin wage purchasing groceries at Kwallos and speak to other store owners, showing and discussing the useful advantages of Bitcoin. Kwallos Shop, Nosihle and Luthando - January 2022 It took about 3 months to onboard the 2nd and 3rd shopkeeper and, in the interim, we started paying bitcoin incomes to our 3 junior coaches who helped Luthando in running The Surfer Kids' program. Up till that point, 2 of them had actually been volunteering/working as apprentices, with the hope that we 'd become able to pay for an income for them. The Surfer Kids' junior coaches, delegated right - Sandiso, Lukhangele Mbasa The 3rd Junior Coach, Lukhangele, (17) the most senior of the 3 junior coaches, had actually been making his income in money. He was (and still is) not able to open a checking account due to the fact that of a clerical error on his birth certificate; his money wage was frequently by force taken by older relative who utilized it for their own suspicious functions. Making money in bitcoin was a fascinating shift for him as he experienced having complete control over his own cash for the very first time.
Saving cash in a bitcoin wallet, safeguarded by a password, altered the household dynamic. He's the earliest brother or sister in the home and he's the huge sibling in a fatherless family. Regardless of still being a school-kid, his income (of about $150/ month) was the single most significant routine home contribution, with the remainder of the household mainly depending on social grants and periodic casual work. Bitcoin put him in the position where he might choose what-- and when-- he would add to the home. Above - The Surfer Kids Junior Coach - Lukhangele These sorts of experiences and useful usage cases stimulated me due to the fact that for the very first time I personally saw an extremely real-world effect of what bitcoin might perform in another person's life. I had actually experienced it in my own life, however in fact seeing monetary empowerment occurring in front of my own eyes, broadened my point of view on what's possible with bitcoin. The meme "Bitcoin repairs this" unexpectedly ended up being genuine, as I saw it impacting apparently unassociated social problems in favorable methods. And the more I experienced this, the more inspired I ended up being to drive this job forward as far as possible-- due to the fact that it's something to think that Bitcoin can alter the world, however to see it and experience it right in front of me, that actually lit the orange fire within me. It was around that time when some momentum began developing, both on the ground and on our Bitcoin Twitter profile, that Michael Peterson called me and provided the assistance of Bitcoin Beach His concept was to turn Bitcoin Beach into a worldwide motion whereby they support comparable tasks however permit them to construct and grow in their own special methods. This speaks with the decentralization of Bitcoin itself and stands in plain contrast to the world of fiat donations/funding where, in my experience, numerous donors anticipate an impractical level of impact and control when contributing to an NPO. Thanks to their assistance we've had the ability to extend our effect by doing some really interesting things, like introducing our kids' benefits program, designating a full-time Bitcoin teacher in our neighborhood, supplying store owners with Bitcoin signs, using full-time lifeguards to patrol our beaches and avoid drownings and selecting an extra Senior Coach, Akhona, to assist Luthando drive this job with more boots on the ground. Bitcoin Ekasi/ The Surfer Kids - Coaches and Lifeguards In addition, we are now supplying personnel uniforms to our broadened group of coaches and lifeguards, all of whom make 100% of their income in bitcoin and invest it purchasing groceries from stores we have actually onboarded. Above: Left to Right-- Good Morning Shop (Michael), Good Hope Shop and Isinyoka Shop The supreme concern, I think, is, "Why do this?" If you're a Bitcoiner, you understand why. It's my hope that routine individuals likewise read this and look at tasks like ours and Bitcoin Beach and feel influenced to believe much deeper and even more about the ramifications of Bitcoin on neighborhoods in South Africa and the Global South. There are 2 reasons I'm doing this. To support and broaden upon the initial objective of the The Surfer Kids' program, which has actually constantly been about individual empowerment. As a recuperating addict there is something I comprehend effectively, which's the reality that modification should originate from within The very best method to assist another is to reveal them how to assist themselves. Anything else produces reliance and, most of the time, has unfavorable long-lasting negative effects. And so The Surfer Kids' focus has actually constantly been on teaching the kids the worth of dedication to long-lasting objectives. As that's the method for a private to empower themselves: devote to something and persevere, no matter what. Surfing is enjoyable however naturally hard to discover and, like Bitcoin, teaches determination.
However, running The Surfer Kids for more than a years, it's constantly seemed like a drop in the pail. There are countless individuals living under terrible situations because town, which's simply among countless areas-- in this nation alone. And we just serve 40 kids. Introducing Bitcoin as a tool for individual and monetary empowerment could, like it performed in El Zonte, produce a causal sequence in our neighborhood. And I've currently seen that take place in various fascinating and amazing methods. Those who dismiss the concept that Bitcoin alters an individual's state of mind and mindset are either not focusing, have actually not experienced the impact firsthand in their own lives and/or have actually never ever seen it occur in another person's life. Second, as discussed previously, this is another evidence of principle. There are extremely couple of locations worldwide where individuals live under more desperate scenarios than towns such as this one. Joblessness is astronomically high. Illiteracy is swarming. A lot of houses remain in reality casual structures constructed from scrap product and the bulk have neither running water inside their house, nor toilets or warm water. If Bitcoin can work here and be naturally embraced in a setting such as this, there's no reason it could not be embraced anywhere else. I 'd comprehend if an upper middle class individual informed me they 'd choose not to utilize it, for no specific factor aside from choice. Do not inform me it's due to the fact that it's too intricate or unpredictable. If it's being embraced (willingly and without any reward besides the energy it needs to use) in the scenarios that we've explained here, then why not anywhere else? And all over else? The reality of the matter is, those are all simply reasons. Individuals will embrace it when they require it. When they have no other option left, bitcoin will no longer be "too complicated," "too unpredictable" or "just helpful for lawbreakers and drug dealerships." And that's actually been the most gorgeous feature of this experience. Individuals whom we've seen embracing bitcoin, in the municipality, have actually refrained from doing so for ideological or philosophical factors. They do not care about our Twitter disputes. We've seen bitcoin being embraced merely because, unlike the rest of society for whom the present system still works fairly great, for numerous in this municipality neighborhood Bitcoin is, in numerous aspects, just the very best readily available alternative. An individual course to higher flexibility and indiv idual obligation is being found out, one South African at a time. And when (not if) the existing status quo stops working or when there's a significant sovereign default or reserve currency crisis, those doubters who do not yet see its energy will start to comprehend. It is just at that point where they will start to highly think about embracing bitcoin. Essentially, we're assisting to get the lifeboat prepared prior to the ship decreases. Due to the fact that by the time it does decrease, the lifeboat should be cruising. This is a visitor post by Hermann Vivier. The Future of ESG in the Online Grocery Industry
Learn more about the practices & strategies being implemented by industry participants from the Online Grocery Industry ESG Thematic Report, 2023, published by Astra ESG Solutions Kroger and BigBasket Invest in Climate Strategy for a Sustainable Future The online retail boom and an emphasis on speed and user experience—instant delivery—have disrupted e-commerce business models.
Amazon Fresh Navigates Changing Social Landscape  Amidst rampant layoffs and the prevalence of workplace injuries, grocery warehouses and fulfillment centers have prioritized the social pillar.

What is ikigai and how can it transform your leadership and business for good?
Tumblr media
Ikigai: a reason for being.
When it comes to leadership styles, the corporate pendulum has swung back and forth at lightning speed over the past decade – partly driven by the transformative influence of technology. In the past, the authority-based leadership model prevailed, with senior executives commanding the loyalty of their employees, staying in office for lengthy periods, and often devoting limited time to the issues that mattered most to them. These days, this old leadership style has been superseded by a new, values-based model, where the focus is on building followership and belonging by listening – rather than just talking – applying learnings, and sharing.
Authenticity is a non-negotiable attribute for today’s leaders
Today’s employees – especially those at the younger end of the spectrum – have far higher expectations of their leaders: not only do they demand authenticity and accountability, but they believe that respect must be earned, rather than automatically accorded. Above all, they can smell a fake a mile off – and they’re not afraid to call out their leaders on the slightest hint of inauthenticity.
Our own research backs up the scale of this shift in expectations. We analysed CEO departures from 200 companies over two five-year periods from 2011 to 2016, and from 2016 to 2021. The total amount of transitions remained relatively stable at 150 and 155, respectively, but the number of involuntary departures triggered by causes other than financial factors increased five-fold during the latter period. This suggests that CEOs are becoming increasingly vulnerable to being removed from office for issues such as turning a blind eye to toxic corporate culture or failing to address socially irresponsible behaviour among their employees.

Ikigai can help leaders define and deliver their true purpose as an organisation
Leaders are under increasing pressure to identify compelling ways to activate their corporate purpose and achieve the outcomes they want. In recent months, we’ve spoken a lot about “picking a pivot in purpose”. Rooted in Japanese culture, ikigai is a very similar concept, first emerging during Japan’s Heian period (794—1185). It has no direct equivalent in the Western world – at least not one that can be neatly captured in a single word. Derived from iki – meaning “alive” or “life” – and gai – meaning “benefit” or “worth”, ikigai was conceived as a way to help individuals achieve fulfilment by finding their purpose and reason for being in life. But leaders too can apply its principles on a much larger scale to benefit the organisations they run, by identifying the sweet spot at which their passions and talents converge with the things that the world needs and is prepared to pay for.
Tumblr media
So, what can ikigai teach us about the way we run our organisations? Many companies are now homing on the idea of purpose, striving to define and communicate the reason for their existence. But fewer have translated that purpose into tangible action: this “purpose gap” is the disconnect between what organisations say, and how stakeholders believe they act.
Putting an ancient philosophy into practice today
For today’s leaders, deploying ikigai to maximum effect is about more than just keeping their job; it’s about doing their job. To achieve this, leaders need to empower and engage with people right across their companies, from the middle of the organisation – which stands to lose the most from change – right down to individual employees, ensuring they feel seen, supported, and inspired.
And this approach doesn’t stop at employees: it extends to the product level too. For example, leaders who can reconfigure their global supply chains for greater circularity and sustainability around areas like climate-positive products and pricing will be well positioned to capitalise on the elasticity of sustainability, where people are prepared to stump up a premium for climate-positive products, foster deeper loyalty from stakeholders, including investors.
Ikigai is about doing what we love doing – doing it well – and focusing only on those things that we have the power to control. In our fragmented modern world, ikigai offers us a compelling way to break down the walls we’ve built to separate our personal values and the values that make our organisations tick, a way to find their purpose and translate it into meaningful action in a way that our stakeholders can see, feel, and understand.
People power: the most renewable energy source there is
Crucially, ikigai gives organisations the opportunity to take a step back, reflect, and reassess their true purpose, rather than pursuing progress at any price. Companies are living, growing organisms – and that purpose evolves as they develop. In order to thrive, they need balance and moderation – not the polarization, nativism, tribalism, and nationalism that divide our society today.
Leaders that can help their organisations to achieve this balance will be perfectly placed to tap into the sense of purpose and joy that give them their reason for being in the first place. And once they can successfully harness the energy of their people – the most renewable source of energy in the world – they stand to reap the enduring benefits that come from the power to keep them engaged, motivated, and above all, happy.
To resume
Ikigai is a Japanese word which roughly translates as "a reason for being".
In a world dominated by the pursuit of progress this ancient concept can help leaders take a more values-focused approach.
Organisations that embrace ikigai can foster employee loyalty and investor confidence.
