Rau đay hay Đay quả dài - Corchorus olitorius L., thuộc họ Đay - Tiliaceae. Cây thảo cao 2m, mầu đo đỏ, ít phân nhánh. Lá hình trái xoan nhọn tù hay tròn ở gốc, có răng, dài 5-9cm, có 3-5 gân gốc. Phytomedicinal and Ameliorative Effect of Ethanol Leaf Extract of Corchorus olitorius on Carbon Tetrachloride Induced Hepatic Toxicity | Chapter 01 | Recent Advances in Biological Research Vol. 5

Liver, the engine house for biotransformation of xenobiotics serves as a receiving depot, processing factory and redistribution center of the body. In the light of these roles, the effect of ethanol leaf extract of Corchorus olitorius on CCl4 induced liver damage in wistar rats was assessed. CCl4 (0.5 ml/kg) was used to induced hepatotoxicity. 25-albino rats of wistar strain (120-150 g) were used for the study and were divided into five groups of five rats per group. Group A serves as normal control and was given distilled water of treatment equivalence, group B serves as a negative control and was treated with CCl4 and olive oil as a vehicle at the ratio of 1:1. Group C, D, and E were induced with CCl4 and the extract administered through oral gavages at scalar doses of 500 mg/kg, 750 mg/kg and 1 g/kg daily. The administration lasted for 15 days period after which the animals were sacrificed. Serum enzyme assay revealed that there was a marked reduction in the elevated activity of the hepatic enzymes viz alanine aminotransferase (ALT) A (71.2±3.27), B (98.8±2.61), C (78.0±3.74), D (74.8±2.77), and 74.6±1.95) respectively. Similar trend was observed for aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels when compared with the controls (P=.05). More so, the result revealed that the extract lowers serum albumin, no significant change in billirubin but increased total protein levels in all treated groups when compared with the controls (P=.05). Furthermore, it showed a significant decrease (P=.05) in White blood cell count (WBC), and platelet but no significant decrease (P=.05) in packed cell volume (PCV) and Hb. From the above findings, it is obvious that the ethanol leaf extract of Corchorus olitorius could have hepatoprotective property.

Some wild edible plants from the Arabian peninsula. For my own reference and whoever else would like to know:

Note: I'm not 100 percent on the toxicity of these plants. Information on them is few and far between.

Fruits:

Nitraria retusa:

red edible berries. Salt tolerant plant. Grows in the Middle East and North Africa.

Glossonema varians:

The fruit of this small wild plant are edible. They're harvested when green.

Capparis spinosa: needs no introduction. This plant has edible fruit and flower buds (usually pickled)

Lycium shawii:

A close relative of the goji berry. It's apparently edible but some say it's poisonous or harmful in large amounts..

Ziziphis (Spina Cristi, nummimura)

A tree, grows wild usually in wadis, it's fruit is edible and the leaves contain saponins and are traditionally used for washing hair and bodies of the dead before burial.

Rhus tripartita:

Arabic sources say it has delicious fruit. English sources all have the copy pasted line "the Arabs make an intoxicating drink from it's fruits" not sure of the original source.

Sideroxylon mascatense: this tree grows in the mountains in oman and Yemen (it used to grow in the uae but not anymore) and the horn of Africa. It has small black berries. It's called boot in oman and is one of the few fruits listed here that I've actually tasted.

Grewia tenax:

Fruit is eaten fresh, dried or powdered in drinks.

Edible greens

Erucaria hispanica: called wild rocket.

aizoon canariense: the seeds are also edible and the fleshy leaves are used as a salad green.

Rumex vesicatius: a kind of sorrel, it's sour and contain oxalic acid so can't be eaten in great quantities. It appears after the rain. Most of these greens do

Rumex cyprius: same as the above.

Cheeseweed mallow: called khubaizah in Arabic. The leaves are edible

Corchorus olitorius: jute mallow or molokhia. Popular pot herb in the middle east.

Brassica tournefortii: saharan mustard. The leaves are edible and spicy.

Edible roots

Emex spinosa: has a sweet edible root similar to a carrot but thinner.

Moraea sisyrinchium: a wild iris plant also called the barbary nut, despite some toxicity it's bulb is collected in the wild and eaten

Allium atroviolaceum: a wild leek.

Tarthooth: a parasitic plant. It's flowers are used for dye and it's flesh is edible.

Useful plants:

Salvadora persica: a large sprawling bush. Its roots are popular as toothbrushes. It's has berries and some people eat them but they taste awful so I leave them for the birds.

Moringa peregrina: this plant grows in the mountains it's seed oil used to be collected and sold. It's medicinal and cosmetic.

As you can see there's more than enough here to incorporate into any permaculture project in Arabia. Tho a lot of these plants are not cultivated and I'm not sure how easy they'd be to grow (a lot are native to mountains and won't be used to sea level shenanigans) . Im keeping an eye out for them and planning to grow them in my yard for now (those I can find)

Kerria Japonica, Jew’s Mallow, Easter Rose, Japanese Rose. This is an unusual shrub in a number of ways. Most plants belong to a family with lots of relatives. But there is only one Kerria. It is named after the Scottish plantsman and collector, William Kerr, who returned from China with specimens for the Kew Gardens in 1805. I suppose because it was as plentiful in not-too-distant Japan as it was in China, Japonica sounded better and so the name stuck. The Japanese continue to call the plant “Yamabuki,” which means “Mountain Breeze,” a perfect name for a shrub whose long stems wave in the wind.

Apparently there are some scientists who call themselves Biogeographers who use sophisticated techniques to determine the date and place of origin of plants. Their surprising findings were that “K. japonica originated in North America during the mid‐Miocene,” which is about 15 million years ago, and arrived in Asia through “subsequent migration into East Asia via the Bering land bridge.”

So, the English name of this single species shrub is thousands of miles off. Then there is the common name, Jew’s Mallow, which prompted me to buy the plant in the first place and which I assumed had anti-Semitic origins. The source of that moniker I have theorized was confusion with the plant Corchorus olitorius, which has similar flowers and was a food staple in ancient Jewish circles.

While Corchorus sometimes is referred to as a “mallow,” that designation has been applied to a variety of plants across different species. One of the more famous mallows is Athaea officinalis which grows wild in marshes. The Egyptians squeezed sap from the plant and mixed it with honey and nuts to produce, you guessed it, the first marshmallows.

Kerria is what is called Monecious, meaning it has both male and female flowers.  The male flowers form at the top of the shrub and are called tassles. The leaves actually contain small quantities of hydrogen cyanide, one of the world’s more deadly poisons.
