eNext ICU” as a relief for the healthcare workers in COVID-19 Situation
The year 2020, was the year when people realized the importance of health as an entity and healthcare providers as its irreplaceable core. As per the WHO reports, the deadly coronavirus has infected more than 112 million people worldwide. The safety of the healthcare workers is the topmost priority because they are scarce, limited in numbers, and on the frontline in the fight against this deadly virus. The high prevalence of COVID19 needs an innovative approach to come out of this combat situation with minimal if not zero losses. A modern approach with Tele-Medicine at its core value acts as a valuable solution to provide a good quality of care and minimizing the risk of acquiring the infection by healthcare workers.
In this context, eNext ICU, Gurugram, India, came across with its already active Tele-ICU services to provide critical care to corona positive ICU patients in different rural areas where critical care is still a challenge in terms of scarcity of PPE kits, high risk of being infected during the care, lack of availability of ICU beds and ventilators, and the shortage of trained critical care staff.
In collaboration with different state Governments with the facilitation of various CSR funding entities like ACT Grants and CII Foundation, eNext ICU made it possible to provide expert advice in the screening of patients and triaging them into various COVID units depending upon clinical needs. Expert and trained teleicu staff still provide24/7 monitoring via 2-way audio-visual cameras, clear instructions & advice regarding the need of admitted patients, and serve as a resource hub for the bedside team by providing the first line of treatment to the patients. With this model of TeleICU, bedside healthcare providers have an instant resource to connect with; a remote specialist anytime in an emergency or for better guidance on handling this yet ill researched disease.
eNext ICU operated various Govt. Covid ICU beds remotely through a centralized command center across 4 states of India including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh & Haryana. They targeted the remote & rural areas like Neemach, Guna, Dhar, Barwani, Khargone, Betul, Ujjain, Morena, Mandsaur of Madhya Pradesh; Raigarh and Ambikapur of Chattisgarh; Rohtak, Faridabad, Nallahar, Sonipat of Haryana; and Mira Bhayander, Jalna, Bhiwandi, Aurangabad, Solapur, Akola, Jalgaon of Maharashtra, where critical care services were not geared up to fight the killer disease.
Each patient in these ICUs was monitored by specialists via leveraging technology and provided with continued vigilance even during the night hours. Even though, this innovative approach is still being challenged in India by many factors but so far has resulted in a positive outcome in terms of decrease in mortality and morbidity rates, less chance of spread of infections, shortening in the length of stay in Intensive care units, etc.
In this way, eNext ICU was able to structure & implement Tele-ICUs in various Government Hospitals to provide an extra layer of critical care in this pandemic which is a less expensive but effective solution to serve humanity.
