Gender jacket V2: day 1
Remember the old jacket? The one I stopped liking because it no longer fits my gender presentation?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, I found a new one that perfectly fits me. And I’m going to transfer all the stuff from the old one to the new! I already took off all the patches and other removables. I even took a bit of fabric from the old one around the wings so I don’t have to take off those two separately. Saves time and… you know, a trace of the old self exists in the new self.
Tumblr media
I selected colours for the sleeve embroidery too. They’re inspirational quotes in crypthand. Not your average karen ‘live laugh love” crap, they’re from my favourite characters from various series. Including but not limited to “eduction, respect, control of the self” (Raine Thornell, Ripper Street), “pretty words can’t save you” (Jozefa, Witchville) and “nobody smart plays fair” (Yennefer, the Witcher).

This will be a labour of of love and I’ve got my summer holiday to complete it. I’ll try to keep the log updated here as best as I can.
The other progress days are in the tag “gender jacket reform”!

It's monday, January 29, 1821. Anne Lister writes, in her own developed code called crypthand: "I love and only love the fairer sex and thus beloved by them in turn, my heart revolts from any love but theirs."

absolutely no disrespect but absolutely cackling at the tagging system that lead someone to tag the poster I did for Crypthand, the play about the very real and historically documented relationship between Anne Lister and Eliza Raine, as hashtag RPF History

⚢ I have to say it's beyond lovely that GJ had the idea that Anne Lister's voice-over of her diary entries should be whispered whenever she writes in her crypthand; it's such an intimate, sweet detail, such a charming way to approach the way she treats her sapphic secrets 🥺

DESCRIPTION : An alternate cover edition can be found here.Anne Lister defied the role of womanhood seen in the novels of Jane Austen: she was bold, fiercely independent, a landowner, industrialist, traveler, and a lesbian. She kept extensive diaries of her life and loves, written partly in code. Made up of Greek letters mingled with other symbols of her own devising, Anne referred to the code as her "crypthand," and the use of it allowed her the freedom to describe her intimate life in great detail. Her diaries have been edited by Helena Whitbread, who spent years decoding and transcribing them.

Gender jacket V2: day 5
Tumblr media
And they are DONE!! All the crypthand quotes on the sleeves, in rainbow colours. My fingers only hurt mildly after doing the last 3 in one go
Now it’s time to either do some glow-in-the-dark contrast stitching along some of the seams…
Tumblr media
Or sew on the back patch 🤔

Just got my assignment of pages
for the West Yorkshire Archive Service’s Anne Lister Diary Transcription Project!!! February 1819 here I come. No idea whether that’s a juicy period or not, but it has a little bit of code so I’m hopeful.

Okay so I was teaching myself Anne Lister’s cript hand (as you do), and it’s so fun to see how she matched letters with her code.
Like, i randomly put the numbers next to each other, and discovered this:
If you take 2 3 4 5 6 7
They literally ‘translate’ to a e i o u y respectively.
So she just went through the numbers and added vowels to them
Idk I just thought that was neat and made a lot of sense really :)

@imbricare LIKED THIS for a journal entry of Anne’s containing a mention of their muse. ( accepting! )
regular = plainhand italic = crypthand
                                                                                                           Friday 12 April 1833
Walked to Halifax early, arrived at 7:17 a.m. Library till 10:30 sharp, research on stabilising the lower coal bed against land- & mudslides as we’ve had them last spring. Borrowed Mawe’s “Lessons on Mineralogy & Geology” till next week for 1/2d.    A. progressing well with her French studies, 1 1/4 hours conversation till dinner at 2 o’clock. ... Without announcement or forewarning, received a surprise visit from a formerly unknown boy by the name of Adam Young, very unkempt but making a healthy enough impression. First thought him one of the pupils of A.’s Sunday school, yet was soon disabused of the notion by his grammar and overall comportment (both beyond outrageous). He seems certainly a good sport & no half-wit, but lacks a proper education & haircut. Inquired after the material composition and origins of his outlandish dress, but could find out no more than that it had all been bought at some unnamed shop or, in the case of his coat, handed down from an older relative. Quite vexed by the whole affair - it is plainly obvious to me from the unfortunate incident with the cow around 4:15 this afternoon that the boy is entirely governed by mischief & surely no good fit for the likes of my estate.    Alludes vaguely to being the god-son of the Messrs. AZF & AJC of London - if strangeness is any indication of kinship, then there can be no denying their relation. Shall return him whenever possible, perhaps by cart in accompaniment of Mr Booth, for I have no use for a child here at Shibden, or anywhere else for that matter.        Even now (8:27 p.m.) I hear him maltreating mine & A.’s bed by jumping about it helter-skelter, much to the chagrin of the frame & springs! 230 years old & at last falling to ruin not because of the woodworms as I initially feared, but this little boy’s continued devilries. How I am meant to put up with this I do not know, though I shall soon sort him out & continue today’s account by teatime tomorrow.     A sprightlier spirit with a more astute disregard for even the most well-intentioned instructions the world has scarcely seen before. Father says this must surely make us a good match, but he is as always ignorant of such things & speaks only for annoyance’s sake.
