Guardian damselfish (Altrichthys curatus)!

It is one of the very few damselfish species which does not have a pelagic larval stage! Instead, the larvae are cared for by both parents.

Rei and the fish on her backpack - brief character analysis and how the events played

(TW murder and suicide)

I don't really see many posts about Muu's victim, so I decided to make a short one based on the fish on her backpack!

Because her backpack is mostly black/very dark blue and white, and considering the shape of the cartoonish picture, I think that the fish is most probably a Four Stripe Damselfish.

"The Four Stripe Damselfish Dascyllus melanurus is a very handsome fish. It is decked out with black and white stripes across its body, another on the tail fin, and accented with a white nose and lips. This is one of the few damsels that keeps it dramatic design throughout its life, though the pattern may fade a tad with age."

What I want to talk about, more specifically, is their behavior!

"They are easy to keep, but in a captive environment their peaceful schooling behavior changes to one of pugnacious dominance. Their aggressive behavior as adults makes them only suitable for a tank with more belligerent tankmates."

First, what it is a school when in comes to fishes?

Basically, a school is a group of fish of the same species that act together and work together for survival.

It's interesting that the events played in Muu's MV are set up in a school...

In Rei's case the "peaceful schooling" might be the old institution where she used to learn.

In this portal timeline conversation, we find out that Muu is in her first year in highschool.

"Yuno: Huh, so you go to that high school. So you are from a rich family then~! I mean, you already gave off that vibe though. What year are you in?

Mu: First year… Kashiki… san… you’re older than me, right?"

It's a very big chance that Rei used to go to a school where there wasn't provided a high school education, the oldest student being 15 years old. Or, a better assumption, she enrolled in Muu's school, because of her grades, basically a scholarship. It would explain the reason why the bully girls are picking up on her financial status, because in comparison to them, she is not as rich, probably being from a middle class family.

Rei, who was once from a normal school where she had learned with other middle class students (peaceful schooling), now has changed the place where she studies.

It is pretty much implied that the bully group was already formed when Rei enrolled and noticed the horrible behavior of the girls.

In a captive environment, Four Stripe Damselfish become aggressive.

Rei might have felt trapped in a horrible situation. "Acting like the heroine" as the bully group describe her, Rei couldn't stand seeing others being hurt. Once she started protecting her other classmates, or, at least trying to, she basically had a more agressive behavior towards the group of bullies, until she become a victim of it herself.

She is annoyed and angry. Seeing Muu having the highest financial status from the group and the other girls always seem to be close to her, most probably, because they want to gain objects, little items (for example the lipstick from the conversation on Muu's phone), Rei thinks that the leader of the group is Muu.

How can you eliminate the problem, if not from the source? In this case, the so-called leader of the bullying group, which she thinks it's Muu.

"They have been known to attack and stress out much larger fish that will not fight back, to the point of these larger fish getting sick and/or dying from stress."

I would like to interpretate the size of the fishes based on the reputation at school. Initially, Muu had a great reputation, at least in her friend group, (larger fish), while Rei, a newcomer to this school, especially after being bullied, had little reputation or not at all (Four Striped Damselfish).

When she assumed that Muu was the leader, Rei decided that she will do anything to stop it. And so, she attacked her reputation, the other girls turning against Muu.

Muu couldn't fight back, because everyone was against her. The other classmates were probably too afraid to intervene or didn't bother with the situation at all. Muu's cries for help were ignored by everyone, causing sadness and lots of stress, until she felt like the only way out of this problem was if she stopped existing...

She was very close to death, because of the negative feelings and the stressful situation she was in, an act caused involuntary by Rei who wanted the bullying towards her and other classmates to stop.

Moreover, I want to talk a little about the color of the fish. Four Striped Damselfish have white and black, while the one from her backpack is completely white the only black spot being the eye. The description seems to be very familiar... More exactly, Yin and Yang.

"Also known as the Taijitu, the Yin, or the dark side of Taijitu, is associated with everything bad, negative, sad. The Yang, or the light side of Taijitu, is associated with all things good, positive, happy. Despite their obvious juxtapositions, what’s interesting to acknowledge is both Yin and Yang can’t coexist without having one another."

She thought that her actions were for the best, trying to stop the bullying. Rei genuinely wanted to help... Which makes the situation even more sad. The black spot represents how her actions were not actually completely good, doing damage to Muu's well being.

Rei is an interesting character, despite not having a lot of information about her! I really hope that in trial 3 we will find even more about her!
