Bon, on va pas se mentir, mais je ne donne pas cher de celle-ci qui débute à peine pour un quintal de raisons dont a) la bande-annonce était catch comme le trailer d’un Roland Emmerich, b) c’est produit par un des networks, à l’ancienne, alors que l’inventivité est désormais sur les plateformes, c) le scénario est très très convenu, tout comme les répliques des personnages à peine esquissés et d) c’est rageant de se dire qu’avec une idée intéressante des décideurs ont accouché d’un produit qui va se vautrer. Ah, et j’oubliais l’aveu d’impuissance du scénariste avec sa référence à Lost. Pour tout dire, j’ai été attiré par Natalie Zea que j’avais tant apprécié dans Justified et c’est finalement pour la fille de son personnage incarné par la jeune Zyra Gorecki que je vais attendre au moins le second épisode. En effet, cette comédienne qui apparaît avec une prothèse à la jambe droite, est sexy en diable et cette idée de normaliser un handicap sans s’y appesantir d’emblée est la seule chose intéressante de ce pilote. #2: Just My Type

There are 200,000+ individual typefaces in the world. Isn’t it hard to hit ‘just my type’? What font will be suitable for the fashion magazine cover and what will suit a quiet and cute cafe? Though out the project ‘Just My Type’ I was trying to find an answer to that. Of course it would have been hard to explore every single font ever created so each one of us was assigned a special font. I got, at the first glance, weird and hard to understand font called ‘New Alphabet’. My thoughts about it can be described using three words: indecisiveness, rejection, incomprehension. It seemed like a new language to me. Who could even use this font in real life? Well, originally it was created for the computers in great times of the first Macintosh and Steve Jobs, the start of popularised technology. It was made specifically for that new technology and its creator Wim Cromwell wanted people to adapt to that font. How crazy he was to try and adapt this ‘new language’ to new technology. I mean we can create all sorts of new technology but it does not mean that we have to create ‘new language’ to it. New type of technology is already hard to use and has to be adapted to. ‘New Alphabet’ would not make it easier to understand the new Macintosh computer. Fortunately, this font was not put in use. Actually, it was not used anywhere except for Joy Division ‘Substance’ music album, Digital Hyperstition by CCRU and a video game ‘Wipeout’. 

I should have definitely done a deeper research on this font since I could find just these three things where it was used. I tried to look at the posters around the city but it was all useless. Seemed like nobody used it because it is just unconventional. When I was doing my research I looked at this font for more time, I tried to find some beauty and sense in it. At the end, this typeface does not look boring. You want to look at it and discover it. It consists solely of horizontal and vertical lines and that is why some letters do not look recognisable. I tried to tie this font with something, maybe some image or an idea. What else that we know of can be described as ‘unknown’, ‘hardly understandable’, ‘mysterious’? It looks as a new language that humans do not use. This whole thinking process made me think of aliens. Those are too hard to understand and do they even exist? ‘New Alphabet’ typeface seemed like a language of aliens to me. After that derivation I needed to research more on aliens and get inspired. I decided to look at films since there are many of them that project their own opinion on aliens. I watched a movie called the ‘Arrival’ made in 2016 and directed by Denis Villeneuve. This film presents aliens as something made out of smoke with massive tentacles. They in fact have their own language which consists of circles which humans can not really understand. I think there is a link between my typeface and the fact that in the film there is a language that humankind can not understand. There is also one more ‘Arrival’ film which was filmed in 1996 and directed by David Twohy. It also features aliens but in a more old-fashioned way.

I would not say those two films have inspired me by their imagery but the idea in 2016 ‘Arrival’ about an alien language certainly made me look at several languages humans use to communicate with external life in space. There is of course a ‘Voyager Golden Record’ that was sent into space. It contains sounds and images that show the variety of culture and diversity of life on Earth. It is sort of a time capsule. There are 115 images encoded in the disc and an audio designed to be played 16 2/3 of revolutions per minute. 

There is one more way of communicating with aliens that humankind has came up with. To be certain, it was Dr. Hans Freudenthal and he created an artificial language called ‘Lincos’. It was designed for Cosmic Intercourse. It was made for any extraterrestrial form to be understood.

This series of dots, vertical and horizontal lines remind me of ‘New Alphabet’ font. Except that in ‘Logos’ there is an actual logic. It teaches natural numbers by a series of repeated pulses, separated by pauses. Then it goes on to teaching basic mathematics and finishes on attempts of showing concepts of our language. 

In overall ‘New Alphabet’ reminds of a code that humans have to decode and recognise. After my whole research I got an idea of doing an answer from aliens to the ‘Voyager Golden Record’ to humankind. The language of aliens will of course be ‘New Alphabet’ font. To make the massage clear I decided to put an image of an alien in the centre of the paper to give people a straight idea of how aliens look like. I decided to use a typical image of an alien that was widely used from 1960 to about 1980. 

That way my poster would be understood by anyone since that image of an alien is very common. I have drawn an alien and put an image into photoshop to see what kind of changes I could do to an alien but so it would still look recognisable. I added filters and liquified an image. I came up with 18 different illustrations of an alien.

At the end I had to choose one and I chose an aline from the second row on the very right. This image still looked like an alien but had an interesting rectangle shape on the face which had a filter applied to it. After I have dealt with an image I needed to deal with text. I needed some straightforward massage with simple text. I wanted my text to be an angry response. That is why I put things there like: give up or die, destroy Earth and so on. I also put a little symbol of a disc and wrote a word ‘answer’ under it to indicate that my poster is a direct response to the ‘Voyager Golden Record’. When creating my poster I used a RISO printer. I think it created more of a retro effect to my poster which brings it back to the days when ‘New Alphabet’ font and an original image of an alien was created. 

I think I should have considered a wider range of ideas and maybe move away from an alien theme. Maybe I should have thought about the meaning of this font. What if I made it even harder to read and interpret? Until what point would it have become unreadable at all? I think I should have explored that them instead of assigning some image to the font. 

One more thing I should have thought of is that ‘New Alphabet’ is actually new so it probably should be futuristic and I should have moved away from ‘old-fashioned’ alien image and RISO print which created a bigger ‘old-fashioned’ effect. It would have been better if I worked digitally or even made an animation of some letters of an alphabet. Then it would have looked modern and futuristic. 

I was effective with my time-management and finished just on time with the project but I think I could dedicate more of my time to the development of my ideas. 

Three important things that I have learned over the course of the project are: I do not need to focus on one theme at the beginning of the project and do a lot of research on it I should rather focus on many areas and do more research on them and then I can focus on one thing; RISO print makes an image look a bit retro and crispy; ‘New Alphabet’ is not hard to understand you just have to look better at it.

When I looked at other people’s work I learned a lot about different text-types. All of the students were able to bring their own image of the typeface they got to life.  The way they presented the text was able to help me form an opinion about it. If you depict Comic Sans font as a very engaging and colourful font it will not look as an annoying and hated typeface anymore. Any font can be used for anything, from fashion magazine to a cooking book. As long as it is presented right you are able to break any stereotype about the typeface that was previously made.

National Arts Action Summit 2019 DC Debrief

On March 3-5, 2019 Americans for the Arts along with representatives from over 80 arts based organizations around the country joined together for the 3-day event centered on arts advocacy. The conference included workshops on advocacy training, breakout sessions which briefed participants on the latest in arts policy, and the annual Nancy Hanks Lecture, given by this year’s guest lecturer actress and singer Rita Moreno. 

Arts Education Briefing and LAEN March 3rd:

The Summit kicked off on Sunday, March 3rd with important Arts Education briefings led by Americans For the Arts Narric Rome. DC Collaborative participated in the National Local Arts Education Network and engaged with peer arts education leaders from across the US, many who also work on Any Given Child initiatives in their communities, like we do. 

We learned about federal funding opportunities that include arts education and professional development dollars that can be used for arts teachers among other through discuss federal support that may be available for arts ed and PD through Title I, II and IV federal funds. We took this information and shared with Congresswoman Norton’s office and shared with colleagues at OSSE (see more below.)

Legislative Meetings and Training March 4th:

During the legislative meetings and training on March 4th, representatives from the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative attended multiple break out sessions and highlighted two we found of particular interest. 

1.) The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act 

The Arts and Juvenile Justice session panel featured David Freudenthal, Director of Government Relations from Carnegie Hall, and Christopher Fisher, President of Spinnaker Government Relations.

The panelists gave a brief explanation of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act, which sets standards for states for how juveniles are treated who come into the justice system. You can read more on the JJDPA here.

The americans for the Arts (AFTA) Statement of Concern details the importance of the reauthorization of the Act and underscores the role the arts can play in juvenile justice reform efforts and prevention. The information in the Statement of Concern provided an opportunity for constituents to start the conversation with their Congressmembers. Mr. Freudenthal and Mr. Fisher stressed that this doesn’t advocate for a specific policy action but provides instances in juvenile justice issues where the arts can be better used.

The recommendations constituents were urged to make were:

Create equitable access to the arts

Understand that poor access to education has a high negative impact on the development of youth in the justice system

Make explicit the opportunities for the arts to help achieve Title 1 objectives and ESSA

Reward effective, community-based alternatives to detention and incarceration

Instead of detention, these students get meditation

Build up the JJDPA’s interest in arts-based practices and past collaborations with the NEA

Have a holistic approach – treat arts programming as a component to justice reform

Constituents shared the names of several organizations that focus on arts and incarcerated and at-risk youth. Organizations like these have had a measurable impact on the juvenile justice system and demonstrate an effective structural model.

Performing Statistics in Virginia, which connects incarcerated youth with a group of “artists, designers, educators, and Virginia’s leading policy advocates to end the juvenile justice system,” advocates for the end to the “prison pipeline” and provides teachers with arts advocacy materials.

Arts Advocacy Day can be intimidating, but the panelists gave a simple acronym to keep in mind throughout the day: SEA: Share your Story, Educate and Explain, Ask. 

The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act is a substantial topic, but this valuable information provided a comfortable path to asking for congresspeople and representatives to support arts programming in the juvenile justice system.

2.) Comprehensive Resources for Entrepreneurs in the Arts to Transform the Economy Act (CREATE)

One of the National pieces of legislation presented was the Comprehensive Resources for Entrepreneurs in the Arts to Transform the Economy Act (CREATE). The bill, originally drafted and proposed in 2016 by Tom Udall (D-NM) advocates for more government support for artists, the creative economy, and creative community development.

Title I

Seeks to expand programs at Small Business Administration (SBA) to increase microloans, business loans, and technical assistance programs for artists.

Expands economic and rural development grants through Economic Development Administration and United States Department of Agriculture to provide to artists and the creative economy support through traditional economic development tools.

Decreases visa processing times for foreign artists visiting the U.S. and increases FEMA access to disaster relief for artists impacted by natural disasters.

Title II

Authorizes “fractional gifts” or donations over time for arts donated to museums and cultural institutions.

Bars a separate discriminatory rate for capital gains tax on art.

Title III

Creates an Artist corps within the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). This program would be similar to other suchs as the Education Corps, Clean Energy Corps, etc.

Includes provisions to develop a model for arts economy community development organizations that working in low-income communities.

Amends provisions in the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, encouraging foreign governments to lend government-owned artwork and objects of cultural significance to U.S. museums and educational institutions for temporary exhibition or display.

National Arts Advocacy Day March 5th:

The conference concluded with National Art’s Advocacy on March 5th where representatives from all 50 states and the District of Columbia had the opportunity to speak with their members of congress about national and local legislation which impacts the arts community. DC Collaborative’s Executive Director Lissa Rosenthal-Yoffe was once again DC’s State Captain and led the conversation with Congresswoman Eleanor Norton’s office. Some outcomes from the DC constituent conversation include:

The Congresswoman co-signing the Artist-Museum Partnership Act and the Charitable Giving Tax Deduction Act

The Congresswoman joining Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME), one of the co-chairs of the Congressional Arts Caucus, in asking House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee Chair Betty McCollum (D-MN) and Ranking Member David Joyce (R-OH) to fund the NEA at $167.5 million for FY 2020 in the Interior Appropriations bill,

Her office made introductions to the DC OSSE team to discuss federal support that may be available for arts ed and PD through Title I, II and IV federal funds,

DC Collaborative will once again help to facilitate DPS and DCPCS student outreach for the Congressional Art Contest.
