incredible writing in video games

i often see a lot of writing inspiration coming from other novels, tv shows, movies and similar media. what i don't often see on my dashboard is writers taking inspiration from video games, so it's time for me to change that.

hello, i'm rowan, in case anyone new is seeing this. now you might be going 'why is this random tumblr user qualified to talk about writing in games?' and my answer is i'm not really. but i am going to be studying writing in games in university next year so... yeah.

below i'm going to list a heap of games that i've taken personal inspiration from, and games that i just think have absolutely awesome story. enjoy!

control - remedy entertainment

remedy is famed among the gamedev scene for fantastic story. while many may know them for alan wake (2012), i personally think control's story is even more amazing.

control's narrative universe is not only comprehensive and jaw-dropping, but flat-out baffling. i adore its characters beyond belief; several arcs have completely consumed my brain.

death stranding - kojima productions

i FIXATED on this bad boy after i finished it. while there are some massive questions still left to be answered narrative wise (thank god there's a sequel coming) i absolutely love love love the worldbuilding that kojima constructed for this game.

deathloop - arkane studios

deathloop is time travel done right but ALSO flipped on its head. my god this game pretty much consumed my brain for WEEKS. oh my god. the gameplay is so unbelievably fun but hey that's not what this post is about. i think i've replayed this game for its story about 3 times. ohhhhh man
