Gathering Diaper Supplies
4 of 4
1
Choose an area to change your baby's diaper. Set up 1-2 diaper changing spaces in easy-to-access places in your home. For example, you could set up a changing table in the nursery, your bedroom, or near a bathroom. If you don't want to use a changing table, you can easily change the baby's diaper on a comfortable flat surface (like a bed or on the floor). Put down a diaper changing pad on the surface to prevent messes.
Choose convenient diaper changing areas based on where your family spends the most time.
It's a good idea to pack a diaper bag or backpack with some diapering supplies. Keep the diaper bag in the changing area so you can stock it and then grab the bag when you need to leave the house.
2
Organize the changing area. You might need more than just a diaper and some wipes to change the baby. Keep things organized and easy to find by using dividers, containers, and small baskets. This way you know right where something is if you need it quickly.
For example, it will help to have a drawer or basket that has extra pajamas or pacifiers if your baby needs a change in the middle of the night.
3
Stock up on diapers and wipes. Newborn babies can go through 8 to 10 diapers a day, so keep a lot of clean ones nearby. They should be easy to reach so you don't have to step away from your baby during the diaper change. You'll also need to keep wipes nearby to wipe your baby's bottom.[14]
If you're constantly refilling the diapers at your diaper changing station, consider leaving a new box of diapers in the same room. This way, you'll never be completely out.
4
Store diaper cream or petroleum jelly. Babies frequently get rashes, and you might need to apply diaper cream or petroleum jelly. Keep tubes of these at your diaper changing area so you can easily use them when you notice a rash.[15]
It's also a good idea to keep these in your diaper bag so you can treat your baby's rash when you're out together.
5
Have a place to put soiled diapers. Decide how you'd like to dispose of or handle the soiled diapers. For example, if you're using disposable diapers, set up a trash can or odor-sealing canister. If you're using cloth diapers, you may want to set up a wet pail where you can store the diapers until you're ready to wash them.[16]
It's a good idea to keep hand sanitizer nearby to quickly clean your hands before you wash them in the bathroom. Remember to keep the hand sanitizer out of your baby's reach.
6
Keep distractions nearby. As the baby gets older, you'll need to distract them during diaper changes.[17] Distracting the baby with a toy, object, or book will also keep the baby from grabbing soiled diapers or squirming during the diaper change. Consider keeping some of these near your diaper changing station:[18]
Small board books
Pacifiers
Toy keys
Rattles
7
Store changes of clothing and extra sheets. If your baby has leaked through their diaper, you'll need to have a change of clothes close by. Keep several clean onesies at the changing area just in case. You should also have a few sets of clean crib sheets in case these get dirty.[19]
If your changing table has a soft, removable cover, you should also have an extra clean cover in case the baby gets the cover dirty during the diaper change.

(I wrote this a while ago and didn't plan to post it but this is all I have for today. It's happening right after they arrive at the house and before the backpack post. It's the day of the move, basically.)
Thankfully, Ava has a few brain cells left under her skull because she remembers to plug her phone in before going to sleep.
Since she was seventeen years old, all of Ava’s life has been careful planning after careful planning, checking everything at least four times and accepting that every time she is still going to forget something. Pumping and prepping bottles every night, always having diapers and a change of clothes just in case, making a chart of meals for the week before going shopping on Saturday so that she wouldn’t have to do it fourteen times with a crying baby. Carefully calculating their budget, plugging her phone and setting five different alarms every night, putting reminders for every doctor’s appointment. By the time she was twenty-three, she was doing it on auto-pilot, not even realizing that she didn’t need to do it anymore since Nina was already old enough until JC pointed it out — and then she got pregnant with Neves, and it all started once again.
Even for the move, she did it perfectly: packed everything into the truck except for what they’d need for the night (the air mattress from a camping trip they never went on and its pumping inflator, blankets and pillows, pajamas and change of clothes for all four of them, toiletries, the girls’ blankies and she even bought a few extra snacks at the gas station in case Neves got hungry like she often does at night). She still managed to forget a few of her in case: her meds, her lumbar belt, namely, and tried to gaslight herself into thinking she wouldn’t need them, even though she had been sitting uncomfortably in the car all day after lifting boxes the day before and that she hadn’t planned on sleeping on anything but a few cushions and pillows and blankets, leaving the mattress to the girls — Nova tried to give up her place, but Ava wouldn’t have it and forced her into bed maybe a little bit too aggressively but she was too tired to have this fight.
So even though she didn’t remember plugging it in, it’s not a surprise that her phone is fully charged when her alarm rings that morning.
She immediately reaches out to snooze it, one or two of the girls grumbling as they go back to sleep, Ava rubs at her eyes to make sure she won’t fall back asleep.
Everything. Hurts.
It’s like her bones are about to crack, to snap in half. It goes from her toes all the way up her spine to her neck, which she feels is about to break if she even dares shake her head — which, when you have three kids, is inevitable.
Jesus. She’ll pop a few pills as soon as she gets her hands on the box she packed them into.
She bites into her lip to stop the groan that threatens to escape out of her mouth as she pulls herself up, grabbing her phone as she does. She exits the room, closes the door behind her as she leaves.
They all slept in the same room, despite all three of the girls having chosen their bedrooms, because it’s still one of their first night in an unknown place and they get scared shitless at every little noise the house makes — Ava herself gets a little spooked out at times, but she hides it well, telling the girls there is nothing to be scared of.
Camila’s text is the first thing she sees.
Leaving the house be there in 20 ❤️
Ava smiles to herself, sends a heart back as she makes her way to the bathroom, grabbing the bag she left into the empty living room, knowing she would wake up the girls if she left it in her room. Her bathroom barely has enough space to hold a shower stall, a toilet and a sink, but somehow it manages. And it’s a full shower stall with a door, so she won’t have to go through the horrible experience of the wet shower curtain every morning. Great.
The hot water helps. Not much, but it does. It’s one of the most affordable solutions she has ever found to keep the pain at a tolerable level. Hot water really is a lifesaver after all — she’ll need coffee for today and she didn’t bring her kettle, shit. She keeps her eyes closed for most of it, breathing the moment in, trying to enjoy her few minutes of peace before the chaos of today.
Sometimes, she wonders who she is if not for her kids’ mom.
She turns off the shower, dries herself off before putting on the same worn out t-shirt and shorts she wears when she’s going to ‘get dirty’ — in a kid-friendly and not fun way, of course.
The sun is not completely up yet when she opens the shutters of the living room and kitchen, pink-orange sky stretches out over the bunch of trees that appear behind her hedge. The wind has turned, the air doesn’t smell of the sea anymore, it smells of nothing and everything at the same time — the birds sing ‘freedom! freedom! freedom!’ and Ava wants to sing with them.
Her phone hums in her pocket.
I’m at the front door
Ava is grinning as she all but skips to the door like one of those stupid cartoon fawns, opens the door and is immediately engulfed in a comforting warmth made out of welcome arms, short dark curls and excited giggles. Ava hugs back with everything she has, gripping onto Camila like she is going to float away like a kid’s balloon at a birthday party, breathes her in and wonders why the fuck she even moved away in the first place.
“I missed you so much—”
“Shh shh, keep your voice down, you’re gonna wake up the girls,” Ava whispers as fast as she can after the sudden shout in her ear.
She takes a step back, looks at her best friend who grins back at her. She has changed so much and not at all, still with her shiny smile and short dark hair, still with the excited energy buzzing around her and the glint in her eyes that screams ‘I’M A RAY OF SUNSHINE AND I KNOW IT’. But she also has a more knowing look on her face, a wise air in the way she carries herself that makes her look so much different than the last vision that Ava had of her best-friend it hurts a little.
“I missed you,” Ava says, squeezing her shoulder and hoping that Camila knows how deeply she means that.
“Oh, Ava, me too. So much,” Camila smiles, before adding mischievously: “It was becoming boring without you around.”
“Oh yeah, I know, nobody to set the high-school microwave on fire, what would you do without me?”
“You do know you’re the reason Duretti banned it, right?”
“And I take great pride in that!”
Camila giggles as she bends down to pick up a tray of two paper cups she had set on top of the box at her feet, handing it to Ava.
“Here. Coffee.”
God, Ava could have gone down on one knee and asked her to marry her right here and there — alright, settle into your divorce first, champ.
“Camila,” she says solemnly. “You are a lifesaver.”
“I know,” Camila hums. “And I brought breakfast.”
Shit. Ava has forgotten her pans and her toaster in the truck.
“Don’t worry, I brought the necessary,” Camila adds, winking as Ava leads her into the house. “Knew you would forget at least one or two things.”
“How come you’re not married yet?”
“I beat teen pregnancy.”
“Haha. You’re funny.”
She is, she really is. Camila laughs as she sets down her box, Ava hopping up on the counter next to the empty space that will soon be filled by the fridge — a new one, bought second-hand.
“Where are the gremlins anyway?” Camila asks, ruffling through her box with the kind of energy that tells Ava exactly how excited she is to meet the girls.
“Sleeping in my room. You probably won’t get them up for another hour, the trip put them in a coma.”
“Well, if they’re anything like you, I know the perfect way to wake them up,” Camila grins, unpacking the content of their future breakfast.
Camila is, of course, right.
At least now there is no way for anyone to deny that Ava was the one to birth those little monsters, they definitely share the same genes and all.
Because as soon as the bacon starts sizzling in the pan, she can hear the door to her room open and three pairs of little feet timidly making their way to the kitchen.
Now, if there is one thing that Ava loves about having her kids, it’s the sound of their footsteps on the floor. The little pitter-patter of their bare feet on the ground as they walk or toddle around like little kids do. Since the day Nova learned how to walk, Ava has been hearing that sound in the morning every day, smiling to herself as she tracked Nova’s trip around the apartment. The giggles in her back as the girls tip-toed behind her to try and scare her, Neves humming as she danced down the hallway, Nina running up towards the kitchen and sliding across the floor when she had her fluffy socks on — JC yelling at them to stop because they were making too much noise.
They are the proof, the evidence that Ava Silva now has three little nuggets running after her everywhere she goes — someday they’ll run ahead of her and she’ll miss the sound of their toes on the floor.
Nina is the first to enter the kitchen in her brave-brazen way, chest puffed out to impress the intruder with her sisters trailing behind her, a mix of curiosity and fearful timidity painted on their faces.
“Is that bacon?” Nina asks.
“Good morning to you too,” Ava answers, frowning to get the message across.
All she gets in return are three little voices mumbling ‘good morning’ as an answer, and a big smile on Camila’s face.
She turns around to look at the girls, mouth open in a greeting, before stopping dead in her tracks.
“Holy shit, you’re tall!”
Nova frowns at the sudden shout, especially after realizing it is directed at her.
“Uh, yeah, okay.”
“No, I mean, last time I saw you you could barely reach my waist. How old were you?” Camila asks to no one in particular, frowning at the ceiling.
“Not older than seven,” Ava supplies, hopping down to take her place in front of the stove — there is no way she is going to let that bacon burn, she’s been ogling it for five minutes now.
She hasn’t seen anyone from Hamdale in person since Neves’ birth, which is pretty fucked up if she thinks about it. Camila could have moved on. Could have added her to the long list of the ones that left and didn’t look back, but she didn’t. She was excited when Ava reached out, helped her way more than Ava deserved — but it had gotten a roof over her daughters’ heads so Ava was ready to deal with the guilt.
So yeah, Camila is right, Nova is tall — compared to the seven year old she used to be. She’s taller, but she’s still the scrawny and scrabbly little kid that she used to be, no matter how much efforts Ava has been putting into making her gain some weight — she still eats like a bird.
Even though they all have the same parents — despite some rumors Ava has spent the last eleven years ignoring —, they all managed to look like complete different versions of the same gene pool. Nova is the perfect combination of the two: Ava’s eyes and JC’s hair, Ava’s nose and JC’s smile, the perfect blend of their two skin color (‘Burning sand’, Ava looked around the painting store one day when all the other kids were on vacation skiing or at the beach — Nina’s skin is ‘Antique brass’ and Neves’ is ‘Tumbleweed’). Nina is the perfect copy of her father, all in angles and charming smiles, except for the color of her hair, which is definitely Ava’s. As for Neves, she’s just a baby version of Ava herself, with JC’s single freckle on the corner of her left eye and his pitch black hair.
Her kids are the most adorable thing Ava has ever seen and yeah, she might be biased — she was the one to make them after all, this is her work she’s admiring — but she’s seen the way people look back in the street at Nina and how just one look from Neves’ dark eyes can get strangers to smile. She’s received compliments in the elevator and has been told at the grocery store that her kids have beautiful eyes so she gets to be a little prideful.
“This is Camila,” Ava supplies from where she’s flipping the bacon and watching over the pancakes. “She’s my best friend.”
The girls look at her in something akin to surprise and a bit of confusion. Because, as Ava suddenly realizes, they don’t remember meeting a friend of their mother before. Sure, Ava had friends, JC’s friends, who were loud and carefree (but didn’t really like being stuck with three little girls running around) and she even made a pretty good connection to Chanel, who never treated her differently after the kids and was always kind to the girls — too kind, she was basically spoiling them rotten. But they were daddy’s friends, not mama’s.
Mama’s friends were far far away, some distant notion they barely knew about. They knew that their godmothers were mama’s friends — Ava had put her foot down to make sure of that, there was no way she was leaving Randall and Zori with the responsibility of her girls if anything happened to them — but didn’t remember meeting them, only receiving gifts and cards on Christmas and their birthdays.
“Yeah, I used to bike her around, I’m pretty sure we would break at least fifty road laws in one week.”
“Kristian Shaefer probably had a migraine the moment we got our driving licenses,” Ava laughs, and Camila joins.
Ava never had enough money to get one of those bicycles the kids had, she would walk around unless Camila zoomed past her, yelling at her to hop on before they would bike around town, all the way to the store to get slushies — radioactive blue for Ava, Barbie pink for Camila. Poor Sheriff Kristian Shaefer would sometimes turn on the sirens of his truck to freak them out and remind them to look around (he never arrested them, thankfully, only watched out and probably prevented them from ending up in the hospital — well, Ava did end up at the hospital, but for totally different and unrelated reasons).
“You’re my godmother,” Nina says, and it doesn’t sound like a question but it’s not really a statement either.
“I am,” Camila smiles, really proud of that. “And now that you guys are here, it’s to work on your mother’s gray hair.”
That gets Nina to grin at her, and Ava suddenly remembers how much of a bad idea it was to appoint her daughter with middle-child syndrome to Camila as her godchild.
Neves toodles up to her, raising her arms up for Ava to pick her up, which she does, peppering kisses over her cheeks. Nina passes under Ava’s hand when she reaches for her, pushing past her to sit at the kitchen table, Nova accepts a brush of her knuckles against her cheek with a little smile.
That’s good enough for her. For now.

Diaper Bag Review: What to Look for When Buying a New Diaper Bag
Whether you’re a first-time mom or an experienced one, it’s important to know what to look for when buying a new diaper bag. Here are five key factors to consider: the weight of the bag, how spacious it is, how easy it is to get your groceries in and out, whether the straps are comfortable and secure, and if it comes with a changing station.
What are the Different Types of Diaper Bags.
Different types of diaper bags include those that are designed for carrying diapers, wipes, and other baby supplies, as well as those that are specifically designed to hold a laptop or other electronics. The most common type of diaper bag is the one that is large enough to fit all of your baby's supplies, but also small enough to carry on the plane with ease. Some people prefer this type of bag because it can be easily carried around with you when you're traveling. Other people prefer the smaller, more manageable size of a diaper bag so they can carry it wherever they go without having to worry about it taking up a lot of space.
What are the Benefits of Buying a New Diaper Bag.
Some people believe that the benefits of buying a new diaper bag outweigh the costs of buying an upgraded version. For example, many people feel that buying a new diaper bag allows them to save money by not having to buy additional items like wipes and diapers separately. Additionally, many people find that they use their old diaper bags less and they don't have to spend as much time reorganizing their contents after each use. Finally, many parents find that using a backpack as their main diaper bag helps them save on space because it doesn't contain any extra equipment or clothes which would need to be stored in another location if they used a regular-sized diaper bag.
How to Choose the Right Diaper Bag.
When you’re shopping for a new diaper bag, make sure to choose the right size. The right diaper bag can help you save space and look good while on the go. You should also choose a style that is comfortable and stylish.
Choose the Right Type of Diaper Bag.
There are many different types of diaper bags, but some of the most popular ones include backpacks, purses, and totes. Backpacks are perfect for carrying around your diapers, wipes, and other necessary supplies when you’re on the go. Purses can be used as carry-on luggage or as a personal assistant for your day-to-day life. Totes are perfect for holding all of your clothes and accessories when you’re on vacation or traveling somewhere else.
Choose the Right Price.
The price of a diaper bag is important to consider before making your purchase. Make sure to find a price that is affordable but still meets your needs for quality and features. You may also want to think about what type of diaper bag will be best suited for your needs – backpacks or totes?
What to Look for When Checking Out a Diaper Bag.
When checking out a diaper bag, make sure to check the size. A large diaper bag can hold a lot of diapers, while a small one might be enough for some diapers and other supplies.
Check the Type of Diaper Bag.
There are many different types of diaper bags, including backpacks, messenger bags, and even briefcases. Make sure to check the type of diaper bag before buying it, as some have more features than others. Backpacks are popular because they’re convenient and can fit a lot of products, while messenger bags are perfect for carrying groceries or other small items. Finally, briefcases are great for holding important documents or files when traveling.
Check the Price of the Diaper Bag.
Check the price of a diaper bag before you buy it! Many stores offer discounts on diapers if you purchase an item before promotional pricing expires. Be sure to take advantage of these discounts when checking out your new bag!
Conclusion
Diaper bags are a vital part of any baby's life, and it's important to choose the right one for each child. By checking out different diaper bags, you can find the perfect one for your needs. Choose the right size and type of diaper bag to fit your needs and budget. When checking out a new diaper bag, be sure to look for features that will make your life easier, such as an easy-to-use zip-up closure and organization pockets. Wrap up your shopping with a happy smile and good old fashioned customer service by contactinng our store if you have any questions about our products or anything else around baby care!

Some of them are even different shapes, like circles or squares, and that’s something to think about before purchasing as the capacity inside may be different. The iPack Convertible Backpack Diaper Bag features include safety sealed changing pad (antimicrobial treated), fold-down changing station, insulated bottle. And some bags are so attractive that you'll want to carry them beyond the diapering years.ĭiaper bags are made of many different materials, from polyester to faux leather, with all of them having their own flair (and weight, so be aware of that as you're shopping). Because you will be carrying around the diaper bag for quite some time, its look may be important to you. The iPack Bowling Baby Diaper Bag is accented with a brown lining to pull the look together. It is large enough to relieve you of the need to carry your purse separately. Use the diaper bag with pockets to store your things as well. While style isn’t the most important factor to look for in a diaper bag, it is one that many parents and caregivers consider. A large selection of organizational pockets provide extra storage for the items you need ready at a moment's notice.

Others feature a zipper in the back that once unzipped, pulls out an attached changing table mat. It’s up to you to decide which special features you don’t necessarily need and which ones you can’t live without. For example, many now have charging ports, so you can charge your phone while out and about with your little one. Right now at Walmart, you can pick up the iPack Diaper Bag, Chevron for just under 20.00 with FREE pick up in store. Many backpack diaper bags provide families with helpful extra features. Check out the dimensions of diaper bags if you’re shopping online to get a real idea of how big the bag will be. You especially want a diaper bag with a large capacity in case you need to travel or pack extra clothes and toys. Depending on how many children the bag will be used for, you want to make sure you have enough room to fit everything.Ĭonsider how many pockets the diaper bag features to give you an idea of what you can fit inside. One of the most important deciding factors when it comes to purchasing a diaper bag is its size. Hands-free backpack straps and top carry handle Gold colored accented zippers Spacious main compartment with interior organization Multiple interior storage. The best diaper backpack for you depends on a lot of factors, but if you’re looking for one that is basically the Jack of all trades, you can’t go wrong with the Indi Diaper Backpack ( view at Dagne Dover) or the Skip Hop Forma Diaper Backpack ( view at Amazon).

the volleyball player you're gonna be falling for today: miya atsumu
word count: 3900
summary quote: "See, Angel Eyes, there are some things that cannot be whispered, some feelings too strong to be degraded to the level of being silent."
and lets go!
***
"You were very endearing while you were half asleep, you know that?" he laughed, touching your nose with the tip of his cold finger. Your body shook, freezing a bit when the train door opened, and the icey night air flooded the inside. The girls' school uniform, mostly the skirt, surely wasn't designed for such weather conditions as the november nights provided.
"What time is it?" you just asked, still sleepy from the nap you took on his shoulder.
"Six thirty" he laughed quietly, putting you head back where it was previously resting. You didn't mind at all, after all, he was comfortable. "We're getting off in eight minutes, so try not to sleep" You nodded slightly, watching the city landscape change in a matter of seconds just outside the dirty window in front of you. The raindrops were creating lively patterns on the glass, changing every now and then due to the blowing wind. Kobee's lights were already on, because, as it was november, six thirty was already a mid-night hour. You looked around the smelly train, noticing only few people left, as the route was already coming towards it's last stop. You noticed two people you knew from school, going home as well, altough it seemed they were not riding together, as they both listened to music with headphones in.
You growled, pouting, when it was finally time to leave the warm train and walk four blocks home. At least you got your boyfriend with you, because walking alone in such darkness would definitely scare you, though you would never say that to his face, no, that would boost his ego too much. You smiled unconsciously as he took your hand into his, as if he was worried you'll get lost.
You followed him out of the train and into the station. You lowkey enjoyed the blue light of the the screens, showing which train will arrive next, the people rushing in every possible direction, as Kobee was a huge city, some of them waiting with their suitcases, coffee mugs in their hands, and some just going home with their backpacks, talking on the phone or listening to music. The shops on the main station were already closing down, but you two managed to get to McDonald's and order large fries, which Miya payed for, then insisting for you to eat them, because "he's suddenly not hungry anymore".
It stopped raining, when you finally got out of the train station, and walked into the cold night. He took your hand once more when you finished the fries.
"Ew, yer fingers are all greasy. Omi-kun would've freaked." he joked, glancing at you. You turned red, snapping away from his grip.
"Don't hold them, then, dumbass" you adjusted the scarf on your neck so it covered your cheeks. Like a stubborn kid, he got the hand out of your pocket and intertwined your fingers once more.
"Nah, you're gonna get cold if I don't, and we can't have that, can we, Angel Eyes?" you blushed once more at the nickname, facing away from him, so he doesn't get to satisfied with the impression he caused. All of the sudden he appeared in front of you, smiling widely.
"What's that, Angel Eyes, does the new nickname fluster ya in some kind of way?" You looked at him with pure irritation in your eyes, as he pulled you into a slight hug. "Hey, yer shoulders are shaking, are you cold?" suddenly he didn't sound like a douchebag, but concern took the place of confidence. You stayed silent, really hating to agree, but before you could disagree, he took of his jacket and put it on your shoulders. "Wait" he added, realizing one mistake, he made and took the jacket back for a second, grabbing your schoolbag and piled the strap on the one of his bag, resting it on his arm.
"That's heavy, give it back" you said, trying to reach for his shoulder, as he was way taller.
"Hell no, what sorta boyfriend would that make me?" he grinned, catching your wrist as you were halfway through to reaching your bag, already standing on your toes. "Aaand another point for Miya for blocking that!" he yelled, immitating the TV sport's commentator.
"You're not a blocker, though" you giggled, getting back to a comfortable, standing position.
"Aww, my Angel Eyes remembers what possition I play in? Well don't you deserve the best girlfriend award"
"Only because you never shut up about being the prettiest setter in Japan. And even that opinion is biased" he gasped dramatically, putting a hand over his forehead, as if he were about to faint.
"Well excuse me, I have to win a bet with an old friend of mine from a little village next to Tokyo. AND YOU COULD SUPPORT ME IN DOING SO, YOU KNOW" he pouted way too loud. You just rolled your eyes.
"And hey, I know you always watch me from the first row, I have eyes."
"I watch Osamu"
"Now THAT hurted" he looked at you with theatrical heartbreak in his sight. "You know what, you're walking alone for that" he added, leaving you there, next to the station, disappearing into the night. You laughed, at first, knowing that he still has your bag and has to come back, but then you shivered, feeling the cold wind against your bare skin, and remembered that he wanted to give you his jacket. You knew he was probably around the corner, waiting to scare you as you were walking around in search for him, so you decided to look.
But the longer you kept going back and forth around the fifteen metre distance he could possibly walk, there was no sight of him anywhere.
"Cool, Miya, now would you please get out? Or else I'm walking home!" you shouted, hoping that would get him to come out of his hiding spot, but you received no response. You held your arms against your chest to keep warm.
You heard footsteps behind you, and turned around, relieved, actually, that he'd came back.
"Finally, you dumba-" you didn't finish your sentence, noticing the person behind you wasn't Atsumu.
"What're you doing out here, freezing alone?" you heard the boy in front of you ask, but you were too distracted by his sudden appearance to respond.
You knew that boy, you knew him damn well, he was one of your closest friends, growing up, but then moved, because his father worked for the army and have to reposition every few years.
"Sato-kun? What're you doing here?" you asked in shock, looking at the boy you had seen for the last time around 4 years before, now standing in front of you, all grown up, so much, in fact, that you barely recognized him.
"Hello to you too, honey" he smiled, hugging you. You felt slightly uncomfortable, not liking to be touched by strangers, but then you remembered he wasn't a stranger. He was a guy that knew you to the bone since diapers.
But also the guy who then promised to keep in touch and disappeared from your life completely.
"Now would you mind explaining what're you doing here alone?"
"Oh, uhm, I am actually not-" you tried to explain, tilting your head around, searching for that idiot, Atsumu, but again, he was nowhere to be found.
"You do seem alone, though. Who would leave you here?" he said with a polite smile, but even so started to get on your nerves. You were not some pretty doll to be LEFT somewhere, what if you were just waiting for someone to show up?
"Well, it's a long story" you replied, but he insisted on keeping the conversation going.
"Mind telling me over a walk home? I do know where you live, obviously." You were still in too much shock to turn him down, mixed feelings flowing in and out of your head.
"Sato-kun, I am really interested in knowing your side of how the last 4 years have passed, but I am really with somebody right now" you answered, but noticed something else got his attention, like he was looking just above your shoulder.
You suddenly felt arms tie around your neck in an embrace, and felt someone bending over to match your level. The cologne you smelled was so iconic you'd recognize it from a mile away.
That idiot finally came back.
"Hi there, buddy!" he smiled politely, resting his chin on your shoulder. Considering the height difference, that must've been really uncomfortable, but what wouldn't Atsumu Miya do for a good first impression.
"Hi!" Sato responded, also smiling, but now less vividly than he did a while ago. "Who're you to lean over her like that?" he added, and the sound of possesiveness in his voice freaked you out. He wasn't in a position to say that, he left you here for four whole years.
"Oh I?" you boyfriend broke the embrace in order to straighten up and walk over to your childhood friend. It was safe to say he was at least fifteen centimetres taller. "Miya Atsumu" he said with such fake sweetness in his voice, that you couldn't help but smile a bit. "And do you mind explaining who you're to tell me I can't hug my girlfriend?" he scratched the back of his head, smiling from ear to ear, looking absolutely adorable, except from the fact that you and Sato were both scared to death. The taller boy reached out to Sato, wanting to shake his hand.
"Miya? Are you the spiker or the setter?" he asked, gripping Miya's hand. "See my brother plays volleyball and I think they've played against you on-"
Atsumu didn't let him finish. First he turned his head back to look at you with a pitiful expression in his eyes, then back to the boy.
"Did he now? I think I would've remembered seeing a face just as annoying as yours on the other side of the net" he laughed, patting his shoulder in a true "big brother" style. "I appreciate the recognition, I really do, but I have many people knowing my name on a daily basis, you know. Let's talk about you, instead!"
You were slightly freaked out by Atsumu's sudden sarcasm and bitterness, as you weren't used to seeing him... jelous? Is that how you'd describe it? He was a very confident person so he never got insecure about your relationship. He knew how crazy about him you really were, even if you tried to hide it as much as you could. You also knew about his affection to irritating people, but it was all jokes and nothing serious most of the time, and even if it was, he always managed to be lowkey and funny about it, but now it seemed as if he was dense and really pissed.
Did he have a bad day? Did you fail to ask him? Countless quesitons ran through your head, but you couldn't seem to recall anything like that. After all, what brought you two together was the fact that you always seemed to know what was happening in his head, even when he tried to hide it as much as possible.
"Sato Yakeru" he said, deadly glaring at Atsumu. "But why do you want to know, Miya-kun?" the boy put his hands on his hips, trying to gain back his confidence. "Are you really that insecure about the fact I took three minutes of you girl's precious time?"
This was not the Sato you remembered. That one was a sweet, sure, confident, but still sweet boy who always walked you to your house when you finished your classes, helped you with chemistry and played with your little sister when she interrupted your study dates. He always listened to all your problems, been there through all the ups and the downs and stood up for you whenever you needed that.
But now you've realized, he was always like that. He was always such a chauvinist, wanting to be the prince charming, wanting to rescue you out of any opression there was, but then you didn't mind, you didn't even notice, because you were percisely the little scared girl he wanted. And now that that's changed, he was suddenly irritating. Miya glanced back at you, concerned when he noticed you weariness. He looked Sato up and down with hatred in his eyes. Now, that's a look you hadn't seen in a very long time.
"Now, now" he laughed with pity. "Don't get too full of yourself there, little one" he said reffering to the fact that he was significantly taller than the boy "It takes a lot more than just a pipsqueak like you to make me loose my composure"
He came back to you taking both your cold hands into his.
"Was that boy bothering you, Angel Eyes? Do you know him?" you looked him deep in the eyes only to find him trying to mask his obvious irritation by acting calmly. You hesitated before answering, not wanting to deteriorate his mood even more.
"That's actually my childhood friend, 'Tsumu. I was just suprised to find out he was back in town"
He nodded, facing away from you, as if he was trying to calm down for real before letting you look into him again.
"What, didn't she tell you about me? Aw, that sucks, man" Sato laughed under his breath.
"What was that, munchkin? Couldn't hear ya." he smirked, proud of the childish insult. Once, you hear Osamu say that Atsumu's mental age decreases for about five years when he plays. Well, it decreases for seven when he gets angry. "Alright, honey, take the jacket now, you're trembling" Miya added much calmer, putting the fabric on your shoulders and adjusting it a bit so it covers the front of your body as well. You loved how big it was on you, you could literally fit your arm twice in those long sleeves of his. "Anything in particular ya want to do, or should we just head home?
You raised an eyebrow, not sure what he was getting at. You already agreed to go to your place and just chill, since it was friday, why was he asking now? And then, looking at the mixed expression painted across his face, you realized, he tried to show the other boy how different than him he truly is. You couldn't help but laugh.
How childish.
"Let's go, I'm getting tired" you responded, standing up on your toes, trying to match his eye level, knowing how much he adored that.
"Aight, we'll be going then. Pleased to meet ya, Sato-kun. Hope I'll never get the opportunity to speak to your annoying little face again." When you two walked passed the boy, he patted his shoulder. You heard giggling behind you.
"Fine then, short stuff,  if you want to go somewhere and catch up this weekend, call me!" Yakeru shouted, already going his own way.
You froze upon hearing the nickname you've been called by him so many times in the past, and suddenly tears formed in your eyes, coming along with the memories you forgot you had.
"She won't!" Miya yelled back, putting his arm around your shoulder. You instinctly rested your head against his body.
Silence fell upon you two, nobody wanted to start the conversation, and to be honest, you already moved on from that little, ridiculous fight, and were now dwelling in your own thoughts, remembering all the happy times with Sato, back when you were kids and life was simpler.
"Short stuff, really? Out of all nicknames?" Atsumu finally said, out of nowhere, faking laughter. "It's the lack of creativity for me"
You didn't respond, barely even hearing him speak.
"I mean, it was obvious the guy was all pure vanilla and no flavour, but still, pathethic." he went on "And the nerve of this dude! Would ya believe? Who is he now, your prince charming coming to the rescue? Since when?" Atsumu started to get really worked up over something he should pay exactly zero shits to, but you chose not to interrupt him, afraid your voice will break, which was highly likely, judging from the tears, still present in your eyes. "Hey, Angel Eyes, shouldn't ya be telling me to shut up by now?"
He suddenly stopped walking, lifting your cheek with his finger, and noticed the little wet mark going across your cheek. Now quiet and worried, he wiped of it off, turning you around to be facing him directly.
"What's up?" he just asked, not knowing how to react. You were always the one to calm him down, not the other way around.
"Nothing's up, can we keep walking? I feel bad about you freezing without your jacket, I'll make you tea"
"I'm counting on that, but first stop with the bullshit and tell me" never once had he even sworn around you, so you guessed that he was still angry, even though he was being kind of supportive.
"It's just that... Oh, it's stupid. Forget it." You started walking again, causing him to have to run up to you.
"It's not stupid, come on. Was that guy bad memories?" he frowned, walking backwards to keep eye contact with you. You didn't respond.
"Or was it me? Did I overreact? Are you mad?" damn, you really didn't think you could shake him this much just by not reacting to what he was saying. You had trouble remembering when was the last time he ask if it was him that made you upset.
"No, nothing like that." you finally decided he'll blow up if you kept on staying silent. "That pathethic nickname you're so stressed about, it just brought up the version of him I'd much rather remember, instead of this <I'm a nice guy> piece of crap I've witnessed today."
Shock came across his face, hearing you get upset like that. He stayed silent for a while, going back to walking by your side, and not in front of you.
"So, uhm... is that why I never heard of him?" he asked quietly, it was almost a whisper. You glanced at him and noticed he was looking away, probably hiding how much it must've costed him to skip his pride and ask that. You took his hand in a reassurring gesture, finding that his fingers were pressed hard against the inside of the hand, so hard his knuckles were probably white by now. It took you a bit to untangle that, but he finally let you hold his hand, still not looking.
"No. I was just trying to forget that guy." your level of voice matched his, giving the conversation an intimate vibe.
"Why?"
"Well, he was my best friend all my life, but then moved away and cut me off, even though he promised never to do that" you kept staring at the pavement, holding back the wave of emotions.
"Was he always such a prick?" you giggled, hearing the noticeable accent on the word "prick". Miya looked at you and smiled as well. "What, does the word <prick> amuse ya? What're ya, five?"
You kept laughing even louder.
"What? What did I say?" he broke into laughter watching your eyes light up, but a clueless expression still decorated his face.
"Remind me why do I love you again, you brat?" you mumbled between bursts of uncontrollable giggling.
Something suddenly held you back from walking. You turned back to see Atsumu, staying still, pure shock in his eyes, red colouring his cheeks. He kept glaring at you as if you just came back from the dead.
"What is it?" you asked, holding back the amusement, still smiling widely.
"You... do?"
For a short while you didn't understand what he was reffering to, but when you finally got it, it shocked you as well.
Did you really just...? Was it really the first time? You knew that for so long it felt as if you'd already said it a thousand times before.
"Oh god, sorry, sorry, forget I said anything" you apologized, remembering his fear of commitment. You broke the grasp and started walking fast, but heard a loud "no wait!" behind you.
Miya managed to catch up with you and put both his hands on your shoulders.
"Wait, just... do you really...?" what, couldn't he say it? Didn't he feel the same way? Why would he be with you for so long if he didn't? Were you just a playtoy? Really, you wouldn't be suprised, judging by the stereotypes going around about him, but you really hoped you guys were different than that.
"I'm sorry if that's a bother to you" you said, tears forming in the corners of your eyes again. You heard him laugh almost histerically.
"God no, it's not, Angel Eyes, how could you think that?" he lifted your chin to look you in the eyes, but you faced away. He shook his head in disbelief, pulling you into a tight hug. You suddenly felt at home, burying your face into his t-shirt, smelling the cologne you so liked.
You didn't want that moment to end. Whatever he had to say, you were now sure it wasn't positive and you didn't want to think of him any different than right then and there: as you precious little saltshaker of a boyfriend who was unbearable to be around for most of the time, but you still adored every single word that came out of his mouth and loved him alltogether so much it hurted your brain to process it.
He probably felt his shirt becoming wet, though, because he leaned over just a bit, to be able to whisper something in your ear. You clenched your fists, waiting for the inevitable.
"Well if that's the case... then that makes all my previous possesiveness out of place, doesn't it?"
You didn't say anything back, not really knowing how, but you were sure, that in an embrace as tight as that one he surely felt your heart jumping out of your chest even more every growing second.
"Hey, Angel Eyes" he then said, pulling away from the hug, and smiling upon seeing your hands still squeezing his shirt, from how much you didn't want to let go. "Relax, I just want to look into those eyes. Also, I don't want to whisper, that's sorta out of character for me, right? See, Angel Eyes, there are some things that just cannot be whispered, some feelings too strong to be degraded to the level of being silent. So I wanted to use my full voice to say — and it's not an easy thing to say, because, ya see, not only did I fall for you, but I am in fact, still falling! And that feeling creeps me out every single day. I guess that's why I was so afraid to tell you this. But I got it now."
He cleared his throat, looked you in the eyes, and put your hair behind your ear, which caused you to shake, due to his fingers being extremly cold.
"I love you to the point where no words are enough."

chapter 2 - you can’t win at everything
“you can't win at everything but you can try.”
series masterlist - here
previous | next
a/n: i may or may not have aged up akaashi for this fic ^^. also this fic has me searching for toddler beds, toddler meal plans and how long should babies wear diapers. i got tired from eating so much last night so i only got to write this chapter now lol. enjoy!
-
The irritating beeps of your alarm clock accompanied by your phone’s constant vibrating pulled you right out of dreamland, stopping you from ever getting to the good part of your dream. You turned off both then closed your eyes in hopes of continuing that wonderful dream of yours but you knew it was futile because you just had to forget it the moment you opened your eyes. Sigh. Instead of forcing yourself to remember you opted with getting ready instead. It was your first day of university, after all, and you didn’t want to be late.
You sit up then checked the baby monitor on the box next to you, your bedside table yet to be delivered. Picking up the monitor, you walk out of your room and into the kitchen. Soft clangs of the pan against the stove were heard throughout the room mixed with the sound of food sizzling then… ding! The bread you have stuffed into the toaster jumped up just as you finished frying up the last omelet. You plate each dish you prepared before packing up the triplets’ lunch and snacks.
Scrolling through your social media accounts, you eat your breakfast. After approximately ten minutes you were done, you bring your plate and mug to the sink, careful not to make any loud noises. Then, you proceeded with the routine you had going with since the boys were born. You eating breakfast, showering and dressing up before the boys wake up then it’s their turn to eat, bathe and get dressed. Thankfully, university classes start just around the same time  as your high school did so there was very little tweaking to the routine. The said changes were that you have to prepare breakfast and packed lunches instead of having your grandmother do it for you. Not that you wanted her to back then, it’s just that she always made sure to wake up earlier than you just so she could do it.
The triplets sure were taking their time to wake up so you decided to head to their room and wake them up yourself. Just as you were approaching the door, you heard a soft ‘Mama’ through the monitor. Judging from the way he didn’t cry upon waking up, you knew it was Masao, your peaceful little angel.
“Good morning, angel.” He turns to you as you enter the room and switch the lights on. Almost immediately, he reached up for you. “Let’s wake your brothers up first, okay?”
“Okay.” He mumbled in his cute, sleepy voice. Almost immediately, he got off his bed and waddled over to Takeo’s. Meanwhile, you crouch next to Kazuo’s bed and start peppering his face with kisses.
The three were up in no time, chowing down on their breakfast in their respective high chairs. You took this opportunity to fix their backpacks, yours having been prepared last night. They had been going to the daycare for the past few weeks so most of the things they need were already in their bags, they only needed to be rearranged in order to give space for their lunch packs for the day.
“Mama, finished!” They exclaimed in chorus. This was your cue to bathe them then dress them up.
“Listen up, okay? Mama has school today, so we have to be quick and please don’t get me wet. If you behave well today Mama will buy you ice cream before we go home. Deal?” You raised your pinky in front of them then they hooked their own to yours one by one. “Okay, let’s go.”
Thanks to the power of ice cream, the bathing process went on smoothly. Same goes for dressing up, all that’s left now is the commute which consists of at least a six-minute walk to the station, a less than twenty-minute train ride to the daycare then lastly, a ten-minute walk to university.
When you arrived at the daycare, the triplets’ teacher had greeted you as usual before helping the boys with their coats then assisting you with the stroller. You were about to leave after waving goodbye when small hands grabbed your coat.
“You didn’t kiss goodbye.” Takeo pouted, the other two following suit.
“Oh no, how could I forget! Sorry, come here.” You crouched down to their height and each gave them a kiss on the lips. “Mama’s going now, bye-bye! I’ll see you later.”
With that, you left. Soon, you found yourself walking down the halls of the university, desperately trying to look calm and collected despite the fact that you know you’re lost. Coolly glancing down at the piece of paper in your hand then up at the signs on the rooms, you pretended like you knew exactly what you were doing. When you took a turn, however, you bumped into a… wall? You glance up and confirmed that it was not a wall, after all, but a person. A tall person, with a sturdy body. No wait, a hot, tall person with a sturdy body and… bed hair?
“…ry, I didn’t see you there.” You were staring. You knew you were staring, but why the fuck can’t you look away? This is embarrassing. “Um? Are you okay?”
“Huh? Oh… yeah, I’m fine.” Finally, your voice cooperated with you. He smiled in what seems like relief before holding a hand out to you.
“That’s great, then. I’m Kuroo, Kuroo Tetsurou. And you?”
“Oh, um, I’m (Y/N). Nice to meet you.” You shook his hand and marveled at how manly they were. “I-I was actually heading to this class. Do you happen to know where it is?”
He held the hand you were using to hold the paper before leaning down to read it. Your heart went ba-dump like those sound effects in mangas you see your high school friends read.
“You’re totally going the wrong way.” He chuckled then grabbed you by the shoulders to face you to the right way. “Come, I’m going there, too. Seems like we’re classmates, (Y/N).”
The two of you walk to your class in silence. But what confused you was why he still had his hands on your shoulders. You didn’t really mind, it’s just that it’s weird and everyone you passed either stared or did a double take. You looked like when your boys pretended to be a choo-choo train.
“We’re here.” Kuroo announced as you arrived in front of the door. “Well then, I’m sitting with my bros over there. You can approach us if you need anything.”
“Okay. Thanks.” With that, he walked off to his ‘bros’, which consisted of a half black-half white haired male and a messy-haired one.
You didn’t think you made a special connection with Mr. Bed Head over there so you didn’t bother him at all that day. And the following days, actually weeks. Excluding the times where he’s the one to approach you, but you didn’t think much of it.
He couldn’t understand where he was going wrong. Kuroo was sure he’s making it obvious that he was flirting with you, but you were so indifferent about it. He even went as far as occasionally bringing you snacks but you were just not having it. He can’t even invite you out to eat after classes were over because the moment they were, you were gone.
“Dude, stop staring at her desk, she’s not gonna suddenly reappear.” Kuroo stopped staring down at your desk in frustration upon hearing Bokuto’s voice. He was planning to invite you out that day but like always, you disappeared before he could even look at your direction.
“I don’t get it, where does she even go?”
“Maybe she has a boyfriend to meet up with after class.” Akaashi bluntly suggested.
“Nah, I asked her if she was single and she said yes.” It was at the time he invited you to eat lunch with him at the cafeteria. You were sitting across him, munching on your food when he suddenly asked if you were single. You straightforwardly said yes then went back to eating.
“You asked her that and she’s still not taking a hint? Damn.” Bokuto states as he pulls his backpack to his shoulder. He then approached Kuroo to place a hand on his shoulder. “Don’t mind.”
“Asshole.” Bokuto laughed and walked out of the room, Kuroo and Akaashi following suit.
“Well, you can’t win everything. But hold on, maybe there’s still a chance.” Akaashi advises. “Bokuto and I are going to our usual ramen place, do you want to come with?”
“Sure.”

you awoke the next morning, and shifted uncomfortably at the wet diaper sticking to your skin. you whimpered, which drew Winter's attention away from the paper from Montmirail he was reading through.
"you wet, honey?" he asked, and you nodded, wiggling around on the bed. Winter grabbed a package of wipes and a new diaper. you cried as the cold air of the room touched your wet skin, and writhed as the cold wipe touched you moments later.
"shhhh, baby." Winter soothed, sliding the soiled diaper out from underneath you, and replacing it with a clean and dry one. it was secured around your waist, and a pair of sweat pants was pulled on you.
Winter deposited the dirty diaper, and lifted you up. he sat you in one of the chairs, and pulled some food on a paper plate closer to him. he picked up some Honeydew, and held it to your lips. you opened your mouth, and accepted the fruit. you tried to swallow it whole, and choked in the process. it hit your gag reflex, and you spat it out on the table, and began to cry in response. Winter soothed you, and lifted you onto his lap. his hand rubbed your back, and he cradled your head in his hand against his chest. he swallowed the lump in his throat, knowing you were struggling. it was clear that leaving you with HYDRA was a mistake.
you were supposed to come with him on that mission to kill Captain America on the helicarriers, and if he had, you wouldn't have been subjected to all the neglect and abuse you had faced when he wasn't there to protect you. you choked out a sob, and Winter was snapped out of his thoughts.
"okay, its okay, baby." he said. "they really messed you up, huh?" he asked and you nodded. "well, that's okay. i love taking care of you." he said, and you sucked your thumb into your mouth. "where's your paci?" he asked, and you shrugged. he stood up from the chair, and laid you against the bed. he saw the black plastic against the white bedsheet. he grabbed it, and slipped it in between your lips. he turned the tv onto some french children's show, and he fished an Ensure bottle out of the bag, and emptied it into the clean bottle you used last night. he secured the lid, and swapped the paci for the bottle, and you happily drank your breakfast.
Winter made a mental note to only give you either purees, liquids, or bite sized foods to prevent choking. he did a quick check over of the bags, and once he was sure he had everything, the wheelchair was pulled from the closet, and the tv was turned off, something that upset you greatly.
Winter sat you in the chair, and you struggled against him, wanting the show back on. you pushed and kicked at him, but to no avail. he was much stronger than you were, and you were secured in the seat moments later.
in a last attempt to revolt, you chucked your bottle across the room. it bounced and rolled across the carpeted floor, coming to rest against the opposite wall. you crossed your arms, and shrunk under Winter's gaze.
"really?" he asked in disbelief. "all because i shut your show off?"
you nodded, your bottom lip jutting out.
"okay." he said, as he picked up the bottle and put the lid over the nipple. "no more bottle for you." he said, and you kicked your feet.
he placed the bottle in the backpack, and set the duffel bags on your lap. you huffed, and laid your head on the top one. Winter smiled as your blinking slowed, and you fought to keep your eyes open.
"sleepy girl." he said to himself, and the two of you were heading out of the hostel towards the train station.
you managed to stay awake until you reached the train station, when you reached your hand out, and signed 'bathroom'.
"bubba, you have a diaper on." he reminded you, but you shook your head, and sighed more urgently. Winter realized what you were saying, and the two of you took a detour into the accessible washroom.
he changed your diaper quickly, and sat you back in the wheelchair. as he loaded up the wheel chair with the bags, and explained the journey you two were taking today.
"our first train is going to take us to Bourges, and that will take a little over 3 hours. then, we're switching trains, and heading to Meaux, which will take about 4 hours. then, i have a deal set up for a cheap car, which will take us the rest of the way." he explained, and you nodded as he turned a corner, and you saw the train.
the conductor came up just as the previous ones had, and looked over the tickets. he glanced down at your sleepy face resting on the duffels, and smiled. "why don't you two take the same seats on the upper level? it's rarely used, and its the quiet zone, so your little one will be able to sleep." he said, and Winter furrowed his brows.
"little one?"
the conductor smiled knowingly. "my wife is a little too. i can see the signs." he said. he handed Winter new tickets, and motioned for some other employees to help you. the duffels were stowed, as was the wheelchair, and the two of you were headed the stairs and into the quiet zone.
Winter smiled as he saw the emptiness of the section, and made his way to the back. he saw down with you in his lap, and you wiggled around, whines escaping your mouth as your tummy rumbled, still hungry.
"shhh, baby. i gotcha." Winter said, and pulled the bottle out of the bag. he shook it, took the lid off, and held it to your lips. you took it immediately, and guzzled down the supplement drink.
you finished the drink just as the train began to move. you pushed the nipple out of your mouth, and climbed off of Winter's lap, over to the seat beside him, and gazed out the window as the train sped up. you babbled and hit your hand against the window gently, before you heard Winter rifling around in the backpack. you turned around, and saw him pull out a small canvas bag. he opened it and dumped it on the table.
inside was bunch of small toys. there were some staking cups, chewy rings, a small container of slime, a small colouring book with crayons, and a small lion squishamal. you grabbed the squishamal rubbed it against your face, sighing at the softness. you giggled, and your eyes roamed over the other items on the table. you grabbed the colouring book, and pulled it closer to you. you shuffled to sit on your knees, and opened it.
you squealed happily when you saw Anna and Elsa inside of it, and grabbed the box of crayons. you held it out to Winter.
"pas, ada?" you babbled, and Winter looked at you.
"what do you need?" he asked with a smile. you shook the box, and whined. Winter chuckled, and took the box from you. he opened it up, and you giggled as it was handed back to you.
you began to colour, and Winter watched you carefully, and thought about all the struggles you were facing.
you could barely control your bladder, you couldn't eat most solid food, you couldn't speak. when you did 'speak' it came out sounding like baby babbling. you couldn't drink from open containers, and you couldn't walk.
what had they done to you? Winter thought to himself, and you sneezed, and focused back in on your drawing. you were a lot more open than you had been on the first boat trip, but you still weren't yourself. you'd barely shown him any sort of indication that you recognized him from before.
he wished he could call Steve. Steve would be able to help him. he'd be able to find him somewhere he could take you to have you assessed. but he couldn't risk it.
he couldn't risk your safety, or the journey ahead of them. he needed to make sure you two got to Romania safe, and then maybe once they've been living there for a while, he could call Steve and work something out.
he knew that HYDRA and S.H.E.I.L.D had fallen, he was there, for gods sakes, but he knew that HYDRA had no shortage of soldiers and supporters alike, so he couldn't risk them intercepting a message and finding them.
all he could do was wait. it wasn't like your needs were unmanageable. he'd done worse than change a diaper. he could handle it.

the next two train rides were smooth. you rotated between eating, napping, and playing, and before either of you knew it, you were in Meaux, loading up a cheap Honda Accord that Winter had bought for a couple hundred dollars. he gave you his jacket, pumped up the heat, leant your seat back. once both of you were secure in your seats, you were off.
your eyes were pulled outside, and you watched the French landscape flit by, and you drifted off to sleep about an hour in to the ride.
Winter looked over at you, and smiled. he liked seeing you asleep. he knew that was the one time you were at complete peace, and didn't have to worry about HYDRA coming after you, and could rest.
or so he thought.

you remained asleep as Winter passed through the German border. the border agent seemed a little wary about Winter, but after a few questions, and iron clad lies from Winter, he was granted access to the country, and headed towards the first hotel he could find.
he'd tried to wake you, but you wouldn't budge, so Winter left the car running and darting inside the hotel, and got the two of you a room. he moved the car around to the closest door to your hallway, lugged the bags inside, and returned to you.
you barely woke when he lifted you from the seats and carried you inside. he changed your diaper briefly, and laid you down in the bed.
he hopped in the shower, and cleaned his body off quickly. he had just reached for the shampoo, when he heard the tell tale sounds of you crying. he abandoned the shower, and wrapped the towel around his waist. he rushed out of the bathroom, and his heart dropped, when he found you writhing around on the bed, in pure terror.
your eyes were squeezed shut, and your mouth was open, cries pouring from it. you had tears streaming down your face as well, and Winter rushed over to you.
"bubba," he said softly. "bubba, can you hear me?" he asked a little louder. you kept crying and twitching ever so often, but the huge amount of writhing had ceased. "baby girl, everything's fine. you're fine. your name is Y/N, my name is Bucky. you're in a hotel with me, in Germany. can you open your eyes for me?" he asked lowly, and you shook your head with a whimper.
"i know it's scary, but i promise you're not where you think you are. you're safe. i promise. if you open your eyes, you'll see that you're safe." you slowly fluttered your eyes open, and they darted around frantically, your breathing speeding up. Bucky grabbed your pacifier from the clip on your shirt.
"can i touch you?" he asked quietly, a concerned look on his face. yo backed up from him and he sighed sadly. "all i want to do is give you your paci. that's it. i'm not going to hurt you, baby."
this seemed to bring you back slightly, and you reached a shaking hand out to him. he enveloped it into his own, larger hand, and you gradually stopped hyperventilating, and you burst into tears.
"oh, bubba." he said sadly, and you were lifted into his lap. he brought the paci to your lips, and you accepted it instantly. he laid back down on the bed, and let you curl up as small as you could.
he didn't say anything, and he didn't ask you anything, knowing you wouldn't respond. he just held you, his metal hand rubbing your back as you drifted to sleep.

Touring with youngsters could be fun nevertheless it does take a little bit more planning and thought than a trip with just you and a buddy or mate. Conversations | Rica Takashima and Christine Yearwood’s “One Stop Family Pop Up”
Tumblr media
The Fiscally Sponsored project celebrates maternal health at public events throughout New York City.
Visual artist Rica Takashima and Christine Yearwood, UP-STAND CEO/Founder, have teamed up to bring awareness to the maternal experience through their One Stop Family Pop Up, which is Fiscally Sponsored by New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). A social practice arts project, the mobile set-up shares accommodations through public events in New York City via workshops, a lactation tent, diaper changing station, a play-yard, and an experiential wearable pregnancy bump.
Read NYFA’s conversation with Takashima and Yearwood as they tell us more about making accessibility a reality in an inaccessible city, and celebrate maternal health with them at the 6th annual Boogie on the Boulevard in the Bronx on Sunday, September 15, where One Stop Family Pop Up will next be stationed.
NYFA: How did your One Stop Family Pop Up collaboration begin?
Christine Yearwood: At the end of 2016, Rica met me at a community market. As soon as Rica saw UP-STAND’s table, a showcase of products and opportunities to support pregnant women and families, she asked to collaborate. Rica, as a mother and artist, sympathized deeply. I was excited about an artistic advocacy partnership with Rica and we quickly thought up the concept for One Stop Family Pop Up.
Rica Takashima: One of our aims is to increase accessibility in public spaces for families. In the beginning, we provided a lactation space, a diaper-changing station, a play-yard, priority seating area, and a free artists’ tent and workshop. Then, we also added a pilot Ramp Project, working to install portable ramps in storefronts that have a step and are therefore inaccessible. These ramps are beautifully-designed and painted by community members; we hope to invite visual artists to add paintings to the ramps in the future.
Tumblr media
NYFA: For One Stop Family Pop Up, the experience includes a wearable Empathy Belly sculpture. What prompted you to highlight the pregnancy experience for others?
RT: This sculpture, made from a used children’s backpack, contains 20 lbs. of water-weights, the average weight gain around a pregnant woman’s abdomen. Wearing this sculpture, participants experience how much a pregnant woman is challenged just by sitting on a chair or putting on shoes. Not only that, they can also feel the heavy burden put on the body in other supportive areas, such as the back and legs.
CY: Many people, particularly males and young people, are not familiar with the typical challenges that come with pregnancy and are even less aware of the serious complications women frequently experience during pregnancy. Pregnancy is special, but can also be stressful, trigger health concerns, and limit mobility. Pregnant women need community members to understand and support them in order to produce healthy babies and best transition into their roles as mothers.
NYFA: The project now includes an open call for artists. How will presenting other artists’ work enrich the participant experience?
CY: After giving birth, many female artists experience career interruptions. We want to make a space for these artists to return and show their work. As an artist who overcame birth and child-rearing, and who is still struggling, Rica wants to make a path for others in her community.
RT: Artists often gain a new perspective through the experience of raising a child, and in turn provide participants with a new way to look at everyday things. For instance, one of our guest artists worked with participants to create reusable wraps made with cotton cloth and beeswax for an eco-friendly alternative to Ziploc bags or plastic wrap. Makers used cloth from a baby’s dress, or special shirt, to preserve and represent their special memories; this is a great way to give them new life!
Tumblr media
NYFA: What new or unique perspectives have your own maternity experiences given you, that you might not have expected?
CY: Being pregnant and parenting has made us realize that pregnancy and childrearing are treated as things that may be accommodated as a courtesy in New York, but that we provide almost zero institutional, standardized, practical support to make public spaces and transportation truly accessible. Everyone knows that New York is expensive, but it is also surprisingly taxing physically and emotionally to have children here. We want to change that.
NYFA: You work in social practice. How does art strengthen a community?
CY: We believe families should have access to socially-engaging art shows, workshops, and public art. All of us better contribute to society when able to connect and engage with our communities!
RT: Our art shows and workshops represent the personalities and communities of our artists. Attending our workshops creates dialogue that introduces and respects one another's origins, customs, lives, and generational differences.
NYFA: Why did you choose NYFA Fiscal Sponsorship?
CY: NYFA has been incredibly instrumental in our work. Their sponsorship helped us to articulate our project goals, create a project plan and timeline, and keep us accountable. We receive our monetary donations through the NYFA portal and are easily able to manage that account, and have been able to receive material donations via their sponsorship as well. Our projects have truly only been possible with NYFA’s ongoing support!
