Scouting Trip 4
Peterson sent us a few files this time around. There were even some pictures of his workplace! They also sent a text editor they linked to Aplha.
Peterson explained a bit about where they live. Itâs something called a Dungeon, but not like the ones we have. Instead, itâs closer to a dungeon from a video game. It was used to challenge adventurers back in v2, and they were thought to be compressed spatially and timewise. Turns out no, they were just sitting out in the OOB, and someone increased the speed of objects inside them. Typical lazy design by our digital overlords.
Their Dungeon, previously called something close to âthe pit of too many ratsâ, was converted into a bunker after someone called the 12th great mage had a premonition of galactic destruction. They then disappeared, which Peterson is pretty sure means they died. Most of the economy was based on dungeons, so the only ones that got converted to bunkers were the ones seen as not important enough. Peterson is pretty sure their great great grandfather was some retainer for a rich jerk who bought the dungeon and turned it into a private hideaway. Heâs also got his suspicions of whoâs a descendant of said rich jerk.
When Mana broke, so did the dungeons. Peterson details how the rats stopped spawning, and the entrance snapped shut at the same time, trapping everyone inside. Fortunately, the dungeon has an infinite supply of air, and some mages had set up a ritual to spawn food and water occasionally. Unfortunately, that ritual was also Mana-based. It still works, but it sometimes spawns the wrong thing. Thereâs a picture of âthe wrong thingâ, and it is not something I would consider eating.
The breakdown of Mana had other side effects. Traditional magic stopped working normally, mana-based materials became unstable, and certain creatures died instantly. Most of the mages took that badly, and have been trying to make magic work for generations.
On comparing the basic timeline Peterson gave us, it became apparent that something doesnât line up. Even though the Dungeon has existed for tens of thousands of years, that leaves Trillions of years unaccounted for. My current hypothesis is a bit strange, but perhaps the time after the Big Bang was accelerated somehow, in the same way that time within the dungeon is currently sped up? Or maybe the Big Bang never actually happened?
