Not only are Kip Omolade’s paintings stunning in technique, but also stunning in application of color. This painting is the most beautiful color of orange that shows the reflection on the mask so perfectly. • Kip Omolade, "Diovadiova Chrome Kitty Cash X", (2020), Oil on canvas, 18x24", Available • We have a selection of smaller works by Kip @kipomolade available as part of our current exhibition, “Metamorphosis”, curated by Jonathan LeVine of @jonathanlevineprojects • To learn more about Kip and his available work, get in touch. • Email: [email protected] Website: www.parlor-gallery.com Visit: 717 Cookman Ave. Asbury Park, NJ Call: 732.869.0606 Direct Message on Instagram (at Parlor Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR7uRBQDE9y/?utm_medium=tumblr

Kip Omolade’s “The Diovadiova - Avoid a Void.”
Opening on September 19th, 2019 at 520 West 23rd Street in New York City is artist Kip Omolade’s outstanding pop up exhibition of 13-15 foot tall paintings: “The Diovadiova - Avoid a Void.”
The show’s title Diovadiova refers to Omolade’s merging of dio, the Italian word for god, and diva, the historical word for goddess. Initially the portrait series examined luxury, beauty and the relationship between celebrities and deities. Omolade has also used Diovadiova self-portraits to investigate his identity as an African American man. He has consistently used single subjects positioned against brightly colored backgrounds to convey his ideas about the universal masks we all wear. However, in The Diovadiova – Avoid a Void Omolade has included multiple subjects in individual paintings for the first time. He states, “I’ve always represented my sculptures by painting them as singular portraits. However, in The Diovadiova - Avoid a Void the faces are now interacting with each other. They are arranged together on large canvases measuring 13-15 feet long. The masks have become mythological characters having conversations about humanity. I see them as deities pondering age old questions about birth, life, death, identity and love.”
Omolade’s labor-intensive process involves making a mold of each model’s face, reworking the plaster cast, producing a version in resin and adding a chrome layer with artificial eyelashes. The final sculpture then serves as a model for the hyper realistic oil painting which may take several months to complete. The technique is a historical link between The Diovadiova and ancient African sculpture, such as Ife bronze heads which were also made from a casting method and required highly skilled craftsmanship. Like the Ife sculptures, Omolade’s new paintings use images of faces to portray what it means to be human.
If you’re in New York City you should absolutely stop by.

KIM OMOLADE Diovadiova Chrome  ‘’The man in the mirror’’
Tumblr media
His self portraits study the immortality , identity and spirituality. Throughout his work, he has further explored his own identity and history as an African American man. This concept links to my work , as my work is also related to my own self identity. I want to create something that explores and depicts all the different stages of my life. This will be a piece that explores all the characters/versions of my self that I have seen and felt like throughout my life. This has got a lot to do with what I change on the outside which I feel unlocks a new character out of me, which is what I want to explore further.
Tumblr media
What stands out to me the most that I love about his work is the metalic futuristic aesthetic faces as well as the vibrant colours in the background. I feel like the colour choices in each painting brings out a different mood and feel. I also love how the colours have been made to reflect onto the faces, giving it this chromatic irridescent look. I also want to play around with colours, moods and reflections / lights in my work.
Tumblr media
What I like most about his work is that he actually references his own face to create these chrome paintings that is all a study of his own self. To create these paintings he moulded his own face to make a chrome sculpture. He took photographs of the sculpture from different lightings and settings as his references for these paintings. The rest of the painting is autobiographical which connects to all the different stages of his life. The use of bright , saturated colours and intricate, abstract shapes links back to his graffiti days. The futuristic, sci-fi aesthetic is influenced from his teenage internship at marvel comics. Everything in his painting is linked to some part of his life which gives us an insight into what kind of person he is.
For me, jewellery is a part of who I am. I feel it is one part of me that stands out from the outside. I wear it everyday that it just feels like its part of my body, i feel like i am missing something if i don’t wear it. Sometimes I forget I’m even wearing jewellery that i’m so used to it. I have always worn jewellery since childhood, specifically gold which links back to my cultural background.
Making gold jewellery will be a big part of my making process as well as finding a way to create these mini versions of myself.

Diovadiova Chrome Brooklyn-based artist Kip Omolade in his ongoing series uses molding, casting, and painting techniques to create masks and large-scale hyperrealistic portraits. The masks are contrasted with vibrant backgrounds, as they appear to rise from the canvas.
