On insurance: I still live with my parents and don't know a lot yet about the sorts of things adults usually have to spend money on. I've always been skeptical of things like insurance and credit cards because it seems to me they wouldn't be selling that if they didn't expect to make money from it. I talked to my cousin a while ago about credit cards and basically came to the conclusion that they do that because they're betting on the customer getting sloppy and letting their debts stack up, and the way you beat that and get money from credit card companies is just by being careful.
I'm a little more confused about insurance though because it seems much more straightforwardly like a gamble they will simply not take if it won't pay off for them. Like, you don't go to a casino because every game they play at a casino is one they've done the math on and have determined that statistically most people will lose money on most of the time. Is insurance not kinda the same? Where they estimate the risk and then charge you an amount calculated to make sure it probably won't be worth it for you?
I know if you have a car you legally need car insurance so everyone knows you can pay for another car if you crash into someone, and I gather that here in the US at least health insurance companies have some kinda deal with hospitals so that the prices go down or something, and there's a reason I don't fully understand why not having health insurance is Really Bad. But we get to pet insurance, or like when I buy a concert ticket and it offers ticket insurance in case I can't make it to the show, and surely if they thought they were gonna lose money on that they just wouldn't sell it, right? Or they'd raise the price of it until it became worth the risk that something bad actually will happen? Wouldn't it only be worth it to buy insurance if you know something the insurance company doesn't?
So the deal is that most people don't use their insurance much, and often insurance companies will incentivize doing things that will make you use your insurance less.
So, for example, you can get a discount on car insurance if you have multiple cars because people who insure multiple cars are more likely to be responsible drivers (the ability to pay for multiple cars stands in as a representation of responsibility here). The longer you go without an accident, the lower your premiums get because that means that you are not costing your insurance company anything but you are paying into the system. The car insurance company's goal is to have the most responsible, safest drivers who never get into car accidents because they can predict (roughly) how much they're going to have to pay out to their customers and they want the number they pay out to be lower than what's paid in. So they try to discourage irresponsible drivers by raising their rates and encourage responsible drivers by giving them discounts.
Health insurance companies often do the same thing: I recently got a gift card from my health insurance company because I had a visit from a nurse who interviewed me about my overall health and made sure I had stable blood pressure and access to medications. It is literally cheaper for my insurance company to give me a $100 giftcard and hire a nurse to visit me than it is for me to go to my doctor's office a couple of times, so they try to make sure that their customers are getting preventative care and are seeing inexpensive medical professionals regularly so that they don't have to suddenly see very expensive professionals after a long time without care.
Insurance in the US has many, many, many problems and should be replaced with socialized healthcare for a huge number of reasons but right now, because it is an insurance-based system, you need to have insurance.
We're going to use Large Bastard as an example.
Large Bastard had insurance when he had his heart attack and when he needed multiple organs transplanted. He didn't *want* to be paying for insurance, because he thought he was healthy enough to get by, but I insisted. His premium is four hundred dollars a month, and his out of pocket maximum is eight thousand dollars a year. That means that every year, he pays about $5000 whether he uses his insurance or not, and if he DOES need to use the insurance, he pays the first $8k worth of care, so every year his insurance has the possibility of costing him thirteen thousand dollars.
The bill for his bypass surgery was a quarter million dollars.
The bill for his transplant was over one and a half million dollars.
His medication each month is around six hundred dollars. He needs to have multiple biopsies - which are surgeries - each year, and each one costs about twenty thousand dollars.
Without health insurance, he would very likely be dead, or we would be *even more* incapable of paying for his healthcare than we are right now. He almost ditched his insurance because he was a healthy-seeming 40-year-old and he didn't think he'd get sick. And then he proceeded to be the sickest human being I've ever known personally who did not actually die.
Health insurance costs a lot of money. It costs less money for people who are young and who are expected to be healthy. But the thing is, everybody pays into health insurance, and very, very few people end up using as much money for their medical expenses as Large Bastard did. There are a few thousand transplants in the US ever year, but there are hundreds of millions of people paying for insurance.
This ends up balancing out (sort of) so that people who pay for insurance get a much lower cost on care if they need it, hospitals get paid for the care they provide, and the insurance company makes enough money to continue to exist. Part of the reason that people don't like this scheme is because "insurance company" could feasibly be replaced by "government" and it would cost less and provide a better standard of care, but again, with things as they are now, you need to have insurance. Insurance companies are large entities that are able to negotiate down costs with the providers they work with, you are not. If you get hit by a car you may be able to get your medical bills significantly reduced through a number of means, but you're very unlikely to get your bills lower than the cost of insurance and a copay.
Because of the Affordable Care Act, which is flawed but which did a LOT of good, medical insurance companies cannot refuse to treat you because of preexisting conditions and also cannot jack up your premiums to intolerable rates - since Large Bastard got sick, he has had the standard price increases you'd expect from aging, but nothing like the gouging you might expect from an insurance company deciding you're not worth it.
Pet insurance works on the same model. Millions of people pay for the insurance, thousands of people end up needing it, a few hundred end up needing a LOT of it, and the insurance companies are able to make more money than they hand out, so they continue to exist. This is part of why it's less expensive to get pet insurance for younger animals - people who sign up puppies and kittens are likely to be paying for a very long time and are likely to provide a lot of preventative care for their animals, so they're a good bet for the insurer. Animals signed up when they are older are more likely to have health problems (and pet insurance CAN turn animals away for preexisting conditions) and are going to cost the insurance companies more, so they cost more to enroll (and animals over a certain age or with certain conditions may be denied entirely).
This weighing risk/reward is called actuarial science, and the insurance industry is built on it.
But yeah it's kind of betting. The insurance company says "I'll insure ten thousand dogs and I'm going to bet that only a hundred of them will need surgery at some point in the next year" and if they're correct, they make money and the dogs who need surgery get their surgery paid for out of the premiums from the nine thousand nine hundred dogs who didn't need surgery.
Your assessment of credit is correct: credit card companies expect that you will end up carrying a balance, and that balance will accrue interest, and the interest is how they make the money.
And it is EASY to fuck up financially as an adult. REALLY EASY. But you are still likely to need a good credit score so you will need a credit history. That means that the correct way to use a credit card is to have a card, but not carry a balance.
To do this, never buy anything on the card that you can't afford. In order to avoid needing the card for emergencies, start an emergency fund that is at least 3 months of your total pay *before* you get a credit card. That seems like a *lot* of savings to have, but from the perspective of someone who has had plenty of mess-ups, it's a lot easier to build up a $10k emergency fund than it is to pay off a $10k credit card debt.
If you don't understand how interest works on credit cards, or why a 10k savings is different than a 10k debt, here are some examples working with $10k of debt, 23% interest (an average-ish rate for people with average credit), and various payments.
With that debt and that interest, here's how much it costs and how long it would take to pay off with $200 as the monthly payment:
Tumblr media
Fourteen years, and it would cost you about twenty four thousand dollars in interest, for a total amount paid of about thirty four thousand dollars.
To save $10k at $200 a month would take four years and two months.
Here's the same debt at $300 a month:
Tumblr media
4.5 Years and it costs about six grand (again, just in interest - sixteen thousand dollars total). Saving ten thousand dollars at three hundred dollars a month would take just under three years.
Here's the same debt at $400 a month:
Tumblr media
3 years, about $4000 dollars (fourteen thousand dollars total). Saving ten thousand dollars at $400 a month takes just over two years.
The thing is, with all of these models you're going to end up paying one way or another. Insurance vs out of pocket is you weighing the risk of losing a fair amount of money by signing up but not using the system, or potentially losing a catastrophic amount of money by not signing up.
For credit cards they really only work if you know you're never going to need them for an emergency, because an emergency is what you're not going to be able to pay off right away. I didn't have an emergency fund when Large Bastard had his heart attack and needed surgery, or when we moved between states suddenly, or when we moved between states suddenly AGAIN and needed to pay storage costs, or when Large Bastard needed a transplant, or when Tiny Bastard got in a fight with my MiL's dog, and the fact that I didn't have an emergency fund is still costing me a lot of money.
So, young folks out there: what's the takeaway?
Get insurance. Get the best deal possible, which usually ends up being the one you sign up for early. You may think you can let it ride without insurance, but man in the six months between when I graduate college (and lost my school insurance) and when care kicked in after 90 days at my job I got electrocuted and needed to go to the ER. If that hadn't been a worker's comp payout I would have had thousands of dollars in bills. Something could happen. You could break your leg, you could get hit by a car, you could suddenly find out that you actually have heart disease at twenty, you could develop cancer. Have insurance, you need insurance. You legally need car insurance in the US, and you financially need health insurance. If you have a pet, I think it's a good idea for them to have pet insurance.
Credit cards are not for emergencies, they are not for fun, they are not for buying things that are just ever so slightly out of your budget, they are for taking advantage of the credit card company and managing to get by in a system that demands you have a credit score. ONLY put purchases on your credit card that you already have cash for. Before you get a credit card, build up an emergency savings so that you aren't tempted to put emergency charges on your card.
If you DO end up with an interest-bearing debt, pay it off as fast as possible because letting it linger costs you a LOT of money in the long run.
Stay the fuck away from tobacco and nicotine products they are fucking terrible for you, they are fucking expensive, and they are not worth it put the vapes down put the zyns down put the cigarettes down I will begin manifesting in your house physically i swear to fuck. Knock that shit off and put the cash that you'd be spending on nicotine into a savings account.
Take care, sorry everything sucks, I promise that in some ways it actually sucks less than it did before and we're working on trying to make it suck even less but it's taking a while.

It's June! It's Pride! It's (my) Birthday!
The Introduction Spiel:
Hi, I'm Reyah! (any pronouns! no really, go for it!) On June 21st, I'm turning 32, an exciting and mysterious age to be!! (So I've heard)
Warning: This is a post asking for financial help, and if there's one thing I would ask is that if you read the whole thing: please reblog.
I'm a multiply-disabled queer person of color, a writer, artist, and photographer. I live with three of my best-good-pal-friends, (@renthony, @kryptidkhaos, and @natalieironside) and our collective army of pets.
We all know it's damned hard to be all these things at the same time under the capitalistic hellscape we're living under, and we/I am always in need of a lot of help with the existing.
I ended the month of May with some smaller bills left still to pay, but am thankful to say that June already had fewer bills than usual due, and the amount I need to start the summer off right is actually less than I was afraid it would be! Woohoo!
What I Make
I mentioned my artistic endeavors, let me show you them!!
Writing
I write less often than I'd like, but I share poetry and shorts, when I have them, on my Patreon!
You must be over 18 to pledge, as I have, can, and will again share Adult Content occasionally. Patrons pledging at least $1/month get access to all content. But most posts becomes free to access eventually. :)
When I do longer form content, I primarily write fantasy with a focus on queer brown characters with disabilities, mental illnesses, and disordered attachments. Because therapy is expensive, and writing is free.
Photography
I do wildlife and landscape photography, primarily, but you can also check out my portrait and event work on my website! You can purchase PRINTS HERE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And because it's my birthday, I'm offering a 32% discount code for all my prints! The code is good from June 1st to July 1st!
A Note, if you purchase a print: first off: thank you. (please feel free to send a photo of wherever you display it!!!) secondly: this will not go towards the received totals on my financial need because Pixels doesn't pay out until nearly 2 months after the purchase. Funds made from sales will go towards future needs.
CODE: PDHHTR
Artwork
I've been exploring art, both analog and digital, a lot more lately, and have shared both process photos and final drafts on Patreon! Here are just a few examples:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I admittedly don't post on patreon as much as I wish I had the energy to, but I try to make at least one thing a month, provided I have the spoons and time.
Creativity is, like, a level 5 spell slot when you're disabled and impoverished, and I appear to have exactly One (1) of those available at any given time.
The Needs:
The Bills: $1,100
Yeah, we had to get here eventually. Since this post is already pretty long, I'm putting the rest under a cut.
More than half of this, as always, is just for the car payment and insurance that keeps the regular day-job-haver getting to said job, and all our medical appointments, errands, etc.
I still owe around $13,000 total on Johnny Car, but I think we all know that's just not a real number.
The rest of the funds would go toward paying the small subscriptions, for my various medications, and the regular attempts to whittle away slowly at the $4,300 worth of other debt.
($2,200 of back taxes, and $2,100 of credit card debt, and gods, do I mean slowly. Interest piles up so much faster than I can seem to whittle.)
If you're able and willing to help with paying the bills, direct donations can be made here:
PayPal | (link)
Venmo | (dovesndecay)
Cashapp | ($dovesndecay)
If you can, and only if you can.
The It Would Be Cools:
Since every dime that comes in goes primarily towards food and bills, there's little left afterward to be put towards other life necessities like clothes, toiletries, let alone things I just think would be nice/neat/nifty to have.
I have a High Priority wishlist. It's mostly art supplies, bulk toiletries, etc.
I'm woefully low on clothes, being short, fat, and trans, so very little of what I own actually feels good to wear so much as it simply covers my body. I have a wishlist of clothes that would be nice to have.
For everything that firmly lands under the "I just want it" category, I have an Enrichment list. It's mostly stuffies, but also games, room decor, hobby supplies, books, and stim toys.
Our household keeps a big wishlist for things we need, want, groceries, accessibility products, and everything in-between.
Okay, now what?
Well, now, I'm gonna ask that if you got to this point, and if you can't/don't want to do any of the things listed above, then please reblog this post.
The more people that reblog it, the more likely I'm able to pay my bills for one more month this year.
But if you don't, it's not like anyone's gonna know. I'm not omniscient, I swear.
Anyway, I don't expect anyone to do anything if you can't or even if you just don't wanna, but if you can and you're willing to, it means the world.
I didn't think this is where I'd be at 32. But I never really expected to get here at all in the end, and it's a lot nicer than I thought it would be. Mostly because I am surrounded by amazing people who have the capacity to be so much kinder than I will ever have the words to describe.
Thank you, and to all, a happy pride!
🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤

I got the job! I am the new sales associate in the pets and livestock department! They essentially had me hired before I got there, just from my experience. It's part-time and pays $1 more an hour than my current job, plus discounts on a lot of stuff I buy (mainly food for my dog, cats, and horse!), and raises come frequently from what I understand. I'm gonna hold out for that medical records job, but this will do just fine until then. Such a relief.

╰┈➤File Retrieved: Labor_Pets.pdf
Type: Labor Pets (also: working Pets)
Overview: These Pets take the jobs that human laborers protected by OSHA will not. Their masters are usually contractors, plantation/farm owners, and managers. They often will go from contractor to contractor as the job demands; as such, the older a labor Pet is, the more likely it will have a variety of skills and strengths.
Not to be confused with Servant Pets, though servants may work as laborers and vice versa.
Typical jobs are working on agricultural plants, plantations, heavy construction, certain factories, and warehouses. Labor Pets are not paid, but do earn "privileges", such as extra rations for themselves or their whole team, menial amenities in their bunks (if applicable), and breaks-- all of which may be taken away for misbehavior at their masters' discretion.
Needs: PPE is unnecessary with labor Pets unless the job is exceedingly dangerous. However, medical care may be given when needed and if confirmed the subject is not faking to shirk its duties.
Laborers are shipped with their standard collar-- a utilitarian metal band; heavy around the neck and extremely hard to take off, its main function is identification (via a number printed on the side), a marker if the Pet has a history of bad behavior or some kind of disability, and electric prongs for disciplinary use.
Training: Ideally, a labor Pets' training should be focused on forming learned helplessness and total compliance without sacrificing fine motor skills, rational decision making, practical skills, and communication. Since these types of Pets often retain their memories, however fragmented, best behavioral results come from the subjects voluntarily signing themselves into the system.
Labor Pets are often selected from people from extremely low income or homelessness, refugees, trafficking, prison, or runaways. Rarely, veterans may also be signed in, though symptoms of PTSD may complicate their ability to work heavy machinery.
Laborers may also be from the dregs and the flunkees of any other kind of Pet training. They will require more training, thus, laborers sourced from other Pets may preform better in "simpler" jobs, such as clothing factories or working on farms and plantations.
While laborers should be able to endure extreme working conditions, heavy-handed punishments (deprivation, amputation, disfiguring) are entirely unnecessary, and will only be a waste of product.
Medical notes: Castration or neutering is generally unnecessary. Heavy monitoring during private time is often nil. Sterilization in males is only needed if the subject has a history of letting its sexual wants impede work.
Females must undergo a mandatory ovariohysterectomy, though circumcision is unnecessary.
Labor Pets' lifespans are somewhat longer than other pets, averaging to 55 (discounting workplace accidents, violence from master to pet, and pet to pet violence). While aging may take away value and capability in the mid thirties, they may continue to work well to 70. Past this age, however, it is in the best interest to both the master and the Pet to euthanize it, as the resource strain to support a geriatric Pet for the sake of an extra set of hands will be be much more of a hindrance than it could help.

why you need pet insurance
Dropping this here to illustrate that pet insurance is a thoroughly good deal. My girl Rosie had a lump removed today, I pay about £25 a month, and in return I save upwards of thousands on vet care every year. (Rosie was a rescue and turned out to have a lot of health problems and need regular dental work etc, even though none of the other cats I've kept needed so much as their claws clipped—go figure.) I insured her as soon as I got her, and all her problems have always been covered.
The £85 is the excess, the amount I pay—even if she has to come back a dozen times this year for the same condition. The £1,359 is the amount my insurer will pay this week. Trust me, you need this and your pets need it. Even something like a broken leg can run you to one or two thousand pounds.
In the UK I recommend Petplan—they're not the cheapest, but they are the most comprehensive and many vets will approve direct claims (where they get the outstanding amount direct from the insurer) from them and nobody else. I've been with them since the 90s and I've never had a claim turned down. I am not on commission, just very grateful to all the other subscribers with healthy cats who are paying for my girl, lol
Honestly I'm on a low income and knowing Rosie will never suffer because I can't afford her vet care is a huge burden off my mind. She has a limp right now which looks like it may be the beginnings of arthritis, which would need daily medication for the rest of her life.
(BTW, the discount column is for my vet's healthcare plan, which is another £13 a month but includes all her flea and worm treatment, her annual inoculations, and twice-yearly health checks, as well as a discount on treatment, food bought direct, and so on. Many vets will have something like this, and it's worth looking into.)

You all know how many animals we help. We have a strong team of fantastic fosters who are dedicated to each and every critter who comes through our doors. We are rich in love but what we are low on is MONEY. Money is what keeps everything going. We cannot run on passion alone.
PLEASE, if you can spare a few dollars to help us save these often overlooked and undervalued animals, it will help us immensely. Especially with Paprika the ferret who may need a mass on her nose removed, and Nicholas the guinea pig with heart and liver disease who needs lifelong medication.
It isn’t cheap to run a rescue. We are so lucky to be able to take advantage of sales, veterinarian discounts for rescues, friends who are pet store employees and let us use their discounts, fosters even paying out of their own pocket (despite our protests to let us cover it!), and very kind supply donations from pet lovers.
But we still spend hundreds of dollars on these animals and we never know when an animal in need of expensive veterinary care will fall into our laps. We want to FIGHT for these animals. We want to say YES, we want to say, WE CAN HELP. We want to CLEAR OUR WAITLIST so that every animal on there is safe and secure until they find their new homes. But we can’t help without YOUR HELP!
CAN’T DONATE? PLEASE SHARE!! 📣📣📣📣 If you’re on facebook, click on our profile and click the triple dots, then click “invite friends” and “select all” then “send invites”. THIS SHARES US TO YOUR ENTIRE FRIENDS LIST, SO MORE PEOPLE CAN LEARN ABOUT US, FOSTER, ADOPT, DONATE, AND SO ON! Its a small thing but it really DOES HELP

A life update!
It's been an unreal time lately and I apologise for the lack of art and presence. Normally I avoid sharing too much in public, but truth be told I think 7/8 years of nonstop work and escaping a bad place and bad people has finally, utterly burned me out. I also developed body pain, and given my previous medical history, I think I have to go back to the doctor for a diagosis on paper for something else.
That being said, my current gig is extremely demanding of my time and energy, and I've gotten sick several times because of it. I'm on 1.5 meals a day sometimes. I really want to quit lmao but I am feeding a family and a bunch of pets and trying to get a sibling thru college and paying the house bills. I wish I had more time to draw because drawing is what I do best and it would've been great extra income, but alas. My free time off work is spent resting and recuperating because the pain gets too much some days.
My comm queue is finally cleared but I still owe so much to my patrons and I'm very sorry for the lack of updates. For now I paused billing and it will be paused indefinitely while I catch up on all obligations and everything I owe. My hope is that it'll only be for a couple months while I get my shit together as well as streamline my online presence and social media management. I don't have much else to say but I miss art so much and yet I also feel weird about drawing, I have to redo my art habits from the ground up.
I feel a lil weird having to open all of these up because I don't want it to sound like I'm copping out, but my loved ones are already concerned. My track record with all my comms are clean so far and I intend to make good on everything I owe 😭
Will make a more formal post for current patrons and any ex-patrons who left during my hiatus, but I'll get you all either a skeb-type (pay what you want, good quality for cheap but no revisions) commission that you can avail, OR turn the total amount you pledged during my hiatus into credits you can use to get discounts on a proper commission. Let me know if that works for y'all? 👉👈
I also miss all my online friends and I hope we get to interact more soon, you guys are the realest and I hope you all are doing well 💗
Anyway update done, I wish you all very cosy holidays and good food!! I'll try to respond to people as best as I can, but any business/patron/etc related stuff feel free to dm/email me for it :'33

journal update because I haven’t done one of those for a hot minute!!!
vet stuff: vet has Tiber back on a prescription diet following a lack full of improvement in his stools after his last tummy bug treatment.
he’s been on it for like a week and is already doing so much better tho! definitely happy even if getting the food is a pain in the ass and expensive. vet is trying to get us discounts for the food but there have been issues with getting that to go through, so that’s on hold for now much to the dismay of dadtiber’s wallet.
he’s been protesting the Sidewalk Snack Stopper. we did training to make sure he we comfy and happy with the muzzle but he has opinions lol. he’s happy to put it on and wear it around but I get pouty sits and dirty looks every time it actually prevents him from eating trash and poop.
Tumblr media
he just sits down and makes the most affronted faces lol.
he’s also got a new lump we’re keeping an eye on this week, but vet thinks it’s benign and just some inflammation around a possible bruise. unfortunately she couldn’t prescribe the usual anti-inflammatory since last time Tiber had it, it made him sick. and she said he’s a bit young for her to want to put him on steroids. but he doesn’t seem to be in any pain, so just slower recovery time and monitoring for now.
she’s also got him trying a little natural anti-anxiety medication. tbh I’m a little frustrated at having to do the otc options first, since we’ve tried various sprays and calming treats already, but I get that she wants us to try all our options first before SSRIs. and she seems concerned also about introducing a new med to his system while we’re still sorting out the Tummy Troubles.
I am mostly just worried since we’re moving overseas spring of next year, and I think starting anxiety meds will really help with his home alone training, which will help in case we need to transport him via cargo.
I am starting the process of sorting out all his travel paperwork and vaxxes and also looking into options for cabin travel and boy oh boy are they expensive.
he’s just a tad heavier than where most airlines cut off for pets as carry ons, so having to look into either boutique airlines with higher weight limits or booking a private charter. which even if sharing costs with other people flying pets, is still gonna run north of 7k. 😭
the current boutique options are still in the thousands, and looking like I’m gonna have to do some road-tripping with him down to Europe and then fly from there to the states and then road-trip from NJ to wherever we end up on top of that.
and that’s IF we’re in the states lmao. dadtiber’s work might also put him in Japan (which he would love to get and is trying hard for) so we’re still going to be up in the air about where we’re moving for a while.
yay me for having to sort out several different moving contingencies for puppy lmao. it would be so much easier and affordable to send him via checked baggage or cargo, but god I know it would probably traumatize him. and we’d prefer to be able to choose to just pay the expense for the best option for *him* over us. but goddamn. 7-10k$ is. tough.
but I’ve got a year to work on it so fingers crossed either I find a more affordable option or can get his separation and confinement anxiety managed. (realistically trying to find a cheaper travel option is gonna be more feasible even if it’s near impossible let’s face it lmao Tiber is like 17 anxieties and a bad tummy in a dog-shaped trench coat :’))
but!!! time for fun update stuff!!!
he has been learning to bring the ball back reliably when we play fetch! I figured out finally that throwing the ball again was a better reward for him than treats, but I’m too slow to throw it again for him to make the connection that bring-to-me equals ball-goes-again-asap until I tried using two balls that I could throw immediately once he dropped it. such a simple solution lol but he finally got it! we’ve been having much more fun at the park now. I think he’s liking having the high energy activity, and I like that throwing a ball takes less energy out of me than longer walks.
he is learning to be a better snuggler! 🥰 finally figuring out how to cuddle up instead of sitting on you in the most inconvenient and uncomfortable ways. he does still come to sit on you though sometimes. his favorite way of comforting me if I seem tired or upset is still to put his butt on my head.
his recall has been improving lots too, and he’s consistently polite on the lead now too. still having trouble being *neutral* about other dogs, but he’s being much more polite now, and won’t run over without permission. very proud of him! it’s also kind of funny to watch the gears turn in his brain too. he will usually sit down like “mom I’m being so good and calm see sitting down very calm PLS PLS PLS can I go play with other dog now????? if I stay extra still and make good eye contact with you I can go play??”
Tumblr media
reintroducing his crate is going nicely too. I haven’t worked up the bravery on my part yet to do more than just close the door and immediately reopen it on him, but he goes to hang out there frequently and happily now. so glad that at least he seems to feel consistently positive about it now.
it’s just been so nice watching him grow up into himself and spending lots of time hanging out with him and doing Tiber things. I’m loveb him so much. he is the silliest goose.
these last few weeks have been a bit rough since dadtiber and I have both been sick, so we’ve been exhausted by him. but even when we’re run ragged he really is just a good little companion. just the neatest little guy! in my home! licking my knees! dogs are great man. Tiber is best puppy.

headcanons regarding the man over there + some others
When I wrote this fanfic of TMOT's perspective of the beginning of the Jellicle Bal and this semi-related fic that includes Old Possum lore, I also wrote half-baked headcanons for him and others as minor background/character details. I ended up expanding on them, and I like what I came up with.
The Man Over There
Name: Thomas [Frank] Stephens. He doesn’t like it when people call him Tom or Tommy, unless said people are family or his close friends.
Age: ~40
Family: Younger sister Anne (~36, nurse), and his mother Esmé (~74, retired actress). Anne has a cat, Apricot. Thomas considers Apricot family, depending on who he’s talking.
Occupation: Veterinarian. Thomas enjoys taking care of animals and seeing their owners’ happy faces (if the owners are pleasant and actually care for their pets).
Due to being a vet, Anne jokingly asks Thomas if she ever goes to his workplace, he should give her a discount (Anne actually takes Apricot to a different vet clinic).
Is the man who threw the boot down during Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats. How did Thomas get the flat that resides over/near the Junkyard? The price was a steal and affordable, sold to Thomas by Mr. Farber, a Man in White Spats…
Frequents pubs. Main two are The Victoria and Westminster Arms (but Thomas met Mr. Faber at The Princess Louise). At any pub, he asks for gin (neat), a gin fizz, gin and tonic, or a Freddie Bartholomew mocktail (he doesn’t care if he gets stares).
Originally wanted to be in theatre (acting, singing), but Thomas eventually realize it wasn’t for him. His preforming skills are as good as he was back in the days.
Headcanons Regarding The Man Over There's Sister, Anne
Name: Anne [Helen] Stephens. Anne doesn’t have a nickname. While her family does call her ‘Annie’ it’s said when the situation/topic is serious, or to help calm her down.
Age: ~36
Family: Older brother Thomas (~40, veterinarian), her mother Esmé (~74, retired actress), and cat Apricot [Jellylorum].
Occupation: Nurse. Anne told her family when younger due to her fear of blood, she will never work in a medical feel. Anne grew out of said fear, and here she is now.
Anne is something of a ‘no hesitating’ sort of person. She will do or jump into action without any second thought (most of the time).
Knows how to play the guitar and piano. Anne loves to play covers of pop songs, mainly from the 60s and 70s, though she can play older (and newer) songs if she tries.
Anne loves a good story, be it told to her at a pub or café, or reading said story in a book on the sofa or bed. Anne could be caught up in a book for hours if she doesn’t set an alarm that limits her reading time.
Anne is 100% certain Apricot is supernatural, having once her heard talk on a full moon.
Headcanons Regarding The Man in White Spats
Name: Faber [Andrew] Faber. Yes, his first name is the same as his last name. This is not a joke. There was a communication error between the nurse and his mother.
Age: ~80
Family: Younger sister Georgiana Verdure née Faber (~75, retired nurse, amateur singer), brother Henry (~70, retired banker, amateur artist/painter), brother-in-law, Elias Verdure (~76, retired retail purveyor of ales and beers, amateur chef), a nephew Isador (~41, took over his father’s job as purveyor of ales and beers), niece-in-law Jacqueline (~38, teacher), and one grand-nephew name Donaghue (~8, student).
Occupation: Currently working as an agent of small furnished flats and has yet to retired.
Owns the Junkyard that the Jellicles gather to and/or live and call home if strays. Old Deuteronomy knows of this fact, and is grateful for this.
Really enjoys eating fried gammon and peas. There’s something about the combination that Faber likes. Funny enough, this combination is the only way he’ll eat peas.
Loves hot air balloons since he was a child. Faber rides in a balloon once every year, even if it means he has to travel outside the city to do so.
Wears the white spats as a weird fashion statement from an argument he had with his siblings when children. Faber likes his title of ‘The Man in White Spats’ very much.
Faber is worried that the Junkyard is at risk of getting destroyed by outsiders. For the last few years, he been trying to find his replacement, but it’s been troublesome.
Faber thought about giving his title of replacement to Isador, but he lives outside of London. The traveling makes it an inconvenience.

TW: pet whump, BBU, discussion of Romantics (not graphic), Dennison is fairly creepy and possessive, this is just a WRU salespitch kind of
***
Dennison flops down at his desk, lacing his hands behind his head. Rough day at work. He went to check his boy out in the morning. 479 was as beautiful as ever, with those confused, doe-like silver eyes and his messy black hair. All he wanted to do was take advantage of the sweet little thing, but it’s too early for that. Unfortunately, 479 is just a patient in the clinic, not a trainee. At least, not yet. The rest of the day was filled with a bunch of Romantics, all eager and docile, but none as sweet as his 479.
All day, he was dealing with those trainees, and all day, he was thinking about this exact moment. What to say, what to do, what words to use to really sell this. He flips open 479’s file and finds the number of his owner, one Levi Katz. That bastard didn’t know just how valuable his boy really is. Dennison let 479 slip through his fingers once. He won’t let it happen again. He picks up his phone and dials the number, placing it to his ear.
It rings for a few moments, but eventually, someone picks up. “Hello?” Levi answers. “Who is this?”
Dennison smiles his widest even though the man can’t see him. “Hello, Mr. Katz. My name is Handler Patrick Dennison with WRU Romantics Division. How are you?”
Levi sighs, his voice scratchy through the phone. He sounds old, much older than Dennison. A shame, really. 479 would do better with someone young. Someone to match his…stamina. “I’m fine, Handler Dennison. How’s Hermes?”
“Oh, 588479 is recovering nicely. I’m sure the staff at the clinic will be calling you to give a more thorough medical update on the pet’s condition. I’m not very well versed on that sort of thing.” He forces a chuckle, knowing it sounds real enough to build rapport. “What I’m calling about, Mr. Katz, is more about after 479 is released from medical care. I’m a Senior Handler here, which means I have quite a lot of experience evaluating Romantics. I went in recently to evaluate how this injury of his will impact his ability to function as a Romantic. We here at WRU take our finished products very seriously, and if anything less than perfect was delivered back to your care, we simply could not stand for that.” Dennison leans forward, shuffling some papers on his desk to make it seem more convincing. “Now, when I evaluated 479—Hermes—it was clear to me that he is in desperate need of a refresher course. Just the basics, he won’t be gone long. Positions, pleasure skills, obedience.”
Levi pauses, but eventually, he says, “Okay. I trust your decision, Handler. Do what you need to do. Make sure Hermes is allowed to continue his reading. It’s important he maintains that skill.”
“Oh, oh, Mr. Katz, of course. 479 is very unique in that regard. Here at WRU, pet customisation is of the utmost importance.” Here it is. Time to move in for the kill. Dennison takes a deep breath, knowing he has to sell this hard to really get his boy to stay a little while longer. “Customisation is the other thing I’d like to discuss. WRU has made a lot of changes to our Romantic curriculum since 479 was trained. We are now proud to offer several new packages and add ons to enhance your pet. I took the liberty of selecting a few options if you’d like to hear them?”
“How much is this going to cost?” Levi asks. “I’ve already spent a fortune on Hermes. Training, medicine, jewelry, it adds up.”
Dennison laughs. “I completely understand that, Mr. Katz. Having the best of the best can be a costly venture. But to be honest with you, 479 was an absolute doll to train. A true pleasure. I would consider it an honor to have him again. Because of that, I’m willing to offer you a discount. Twenty percent off all services. It’s the biggest discount we offer owners, Mr. Katz.”
“Yeah, okay,” Levi grumbles. “Let’s hear it.”
“Wonderful.” The twenty percent off worked like a charm, Dennison knew it would. “I’m more than happy to send a full packet of options over your way, but I would hate to waste your very valuable time, Mr. Katz. I’ve come up with the additional services that I think would be best suited to 479 and to your needs. I won’t bore you with technical terms. He’ll benefit greatly from our Romantic-specific general enhancement package, which reinforces and builds on Romantic skills. I also would recommend our dictation add on. I know you like having 479 read to you. This is a small add on, but it’ll really add eloquence to his speech. Our speech trainers here can make him sound like he’s telling a story instead of just reading words off a page. This will all take about a month, but that timeline isn’t set in stone. I’d need your permission to evaluate him.”
“Can you…” Levi sighs, Dennison can imagine the old bastard pinching his nose and missing his Romantic. “Can you train him to beg better? Like…he’s sweet when he begs, but he doesn’t know a lot of different ways to do it? And I’d like a refresher on his classical ballet training. Just to be safe in case his illness damaged his skills.”
Oh, this is perfect. Absolutely perfect. Dennison wasn’t expecting this much, if anything, he wasn’t sure Levi would go for this at all. But two more add ons? He’ll get so much more time with 479 and he’ll get a nice bonus at the end of the year. “Of course, Mr. Katz. Begging and classical ballet, in addition to the Romantic-specific general enhancement package and the dictation package.”
“Yes, that’s fine. Have your people send the bill to my house.”
“Same place we sent your pet, or have you moved since, Mr. Katz?” Dennison says, typing up the order request to get it approved.
“Same address you have on file. Will you be his primary handler, or will his training go to someone else?”
Dennison grins, imagining how wonderful it will be to have his boy under his desk again. “That’s right. I’m emailing you consent forms right now to continue training your pet, and if you sign those tonight, I’ll evaluate your pet tomorrow morning and give you a call right after.”
“Sounds perfect, Handler Dennison. Thank you for calling me and notifying me of my options. That’s what makes WRU worth the price, you know. Good customer service. Have a good night.”
Dennison hangs up and sets the phone down. Customer service. It makes him laugh a little bit. Levi doesn’t know just how much worth his delectable little pet has, and he gave him up without a struggle. Dennison will get at least two months, maybe more with 479 cuddling up to him, eating out of his fucking hand.
He hasn’t been able to stop thinking about 479. It’s affected everything, relationships, work, sex life. No other trainee has come even close to that perfection, that desirability. Having 479 back in his care will either kick his addiction to the pet or make it so much worse, but Dennison doesn’t care.
For the time being, 479 is back and Dennison can’t wait to get his hands on him.

Charité, season 4 - episode 3
Here there be spoilers, and unasked-for snark.
Discount Daniel Sträßer in a skirt! I appreciate that someone is bringing in a little gender.
And an eeeeevil redhead whose behavior makes me think she's his ex. They were definitely social justice warriors together, so of course she has to be rude and pushy lest we forget that demonstrators are Not Nice People. This is growing tedious.
"I'm gonna treat him the way I think is right without your agreement" - Dylan is right; Maral is riding her boss hubris.
Oh no, not another "let me show you with these random objects I have at hand" simplified explanation. That was already so patronizing when Ella did it last season. Stop treating your audience like idiots! Especially on ground of an entirely unproven theory. I've never heard of this "integrate the bacterium into the biome" approach; sounds like potentially kicking off unpredictable changes in the body. I need a rl medic on this.
"Dylan tries to hinder my work" - no, Dylan offered the patient and his spouses an established therapy. You come up with wild speculations, that the patient's spouses turned down, not Dylan.
Can Seda and Maral just once talk to each other like normal people?
Watching people lying around with their eyeballs twitching under their lids. Is this Avatar?
So this woman is from the US, and they had her be a climate refugee? That is 1) not entirely logical because at least Saxony is canonically burning already, too, nevermind that Brandenburg has a lot of flammable area, and 2) cowardly of the writers. Lean into the dystopic possibilities of the next elections and make her a political refugee, goddammit!
Why did she push her treatment through when the family already turned it down? She knows she cannot treat him against consent. Buuut the plot gives her a free ticket anyway. Sure.
It feels ridiculous to listen to Emilia whine about lacking finances while she's sitting in an office the size of a ballroom, walls clad with shiny wood and huge windows to a nice garden.
"You should become a surgeon" - yeah, because if there is one thing the past seasons have taught us, it's that the only medical staff that matters is the doctors. Fuck nurses, amirite? Someone please shoot me.
If your big job project gets discontinued, try romance! What kind of logic is that? I hate it when "date a new person" is treated as the solution to a shitty life situation.
I have a pet peeve: Medical staff wearing their long hair loose on the job. Fucking put it up, you're in a hospital / lab!
...This promise sounds hollow, Maral.
Wait, Julia's sister lives in the US?? But she's speaking accent-free German? With both her sister and her son? And the surname? I thought they were from Germany.
The guy with the queerest vibes is the one the narrative makes look the shadiest. I feel so bad for Discount Daniel Sträßer it makes me almost use his actual name, but I don't want to to kill my running gag.
Thank heaven for Nils; without him being kind and caring to his daughter-in-law, I'd be so sick of this family's dynamics.
Hey, finally some natural-looking affection between Maral and Julia! So of course Maral has to ruin the moment. "Everything is about meeeeee!"
The promise was empty. Great way to treat your co-workers, Maral. Why is she so arrogant?
Consequences for misconduct? It's more likely than you- Yeah, no, let's see how long that lasts.
So this is my turning point for Maral's character. Now she's getting on my nerves way more than I like her. And the episode overall leaves me disgruntled. Why is everyone so unpleasant?
