I'm rewatching Once Upon a Time, and just saw my new favorite thing 😂
We know that David Anders plays Doctor Whale (Frankenstein).
Tumblr media
He also plays Blaine on iZombie.
Tumblr media
He had been absent from OUAT to work on iZombie, but came back to deliver a baby. Blonde hair and all.
Tumblr media
I love that they wrote in people giving him shit for the bleached zombie hair 😂😂😂
Tumblr media
I fucking love this show.

Black Queen [Once Upon A Time]
"I am living proof that the mind... that the mind is a terrible thing."
Many believe there were only two queens in Wonderland, White and Red, but there was another. The Black Queen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wonderland.
A chessboard.
One white side and one black.
We know the Red Queen, who is known to shout "Off with her head" and who does not rule the country, but terrorizes it. A very pedantic, bossy and lecturing person, who for many is the equivalent to a teacher.
The White Queen, a noble and sensitive woman, but at the same time stupid and helpless, almost like a newborn.
Many believe that there are only the two of them, but there is another queen. The Black Queen.
Black against white.
Not red against white.
After a quick shower, which did her more than good, Valerie wiped her hand over the fogged mirror and immediately took a few steps back, letting out a sharp scream. It wasn't her own reflection looking back at her, but a row of pointed teeth. The teeth slowly dissolved and single letters appeared in their place. First here, then there, without any connection. Little by little, words formed and finally a sentence. It is about time. No sooner had she read the sentence than it disappeared again and the same game began all over again. The fall is imminent. Again the letters disappeared, rearranged themselves and new ones were added. Reclaim what is rightfully yours. Nothing more came after that.
It was all a sign that Val was overtired. Mere fantasy, that was all it had been.
As if these hallucinations weren't disturbing enough, paranoia was added to the mix. Ever since Valerie had left the hospital and was on her way home, she had felt like she was being watched. But there was nothing to see. Nothing at all. Except a crow. Not one of the birds that had been so close to her since she left the hospital. Fortunately, this day would soon be over.

On my season 2 rewatch and I think an argument could be made that “In the Name of the Brother” Doctor Whale’s willingness to passively allow Greg to die is a parallel to letting Justine be executed in the original novel.
Let me explain.
(Firstly just to make sure we don’t get wires crossed, I’m going to always refer to OUAT’s version of the character as Whale and the novel version as Victor.)
OUAT takes creative liberties with the story of Frankenstein but the broad strokes are there: an intelligent but extremely arrogant young man wants to find a way to circumvent death, create new life and wants the glory that comes with it. But of course, everything goes wrong. In the novel it’s because Victor NEVER considers the consequences of his own actions. In OUAT, things fail because (for whatever reason) Daniel and Gerhardt got all murderous when they were brought back to life.
In the novel, it’s a court of law that tries and convicts Justine of William’s murder. Despite knowing she’s innocent, and knowing who really killed his younger brother, Victor doesn’t say anything in her defense. He’s so terrified of the consequences of his own actions, he’s completely willing to let Justine die so he won’t have to face them.
In his focus episode, “In the Name of the Brother” Whale is also terrified of the consequences of his actions. If you’ll notice, he’s doing all he can to make this stranger someone else’s problem. (Which, does Storybrooke hospital just have no other doctors? At all? But not the point.) First he tries to get Gold to fix the guy with magic and when that doesn’t work, he tries to force the decision on the Charmings and Company before running away. From a narrative standpoint, the suicide attempt could also be read as trying to escape from consequences.
(Which to be absolutely clear I am NOT minimizing suicidal thoughts or attempts.)
But Whale has what Victor Frankenstein didn’t—someone who knows what’s he’s done (broadly) and kicks his ass into gear. Reminding him of the consequences if he doesn’t at least TRY. (Shout out to Ruby btw.)

eleven is fascinating to me because he came right off the back of tens horrible traumatic breakdown after he lost everything and he immediately tried to establish himself as the opposite of that. he is funny and goofy and almost childlike, and he bulldozes on in his adventures with amy like nothing happened at all. but then something happens and his masks slips and it's like oh! the core of this man is still anger. he is so so angry all of the time and this façade is the only thing stopping him from being consumed by it. he isn't over any of it and he hasn't moved on. he is wearing a fez and laughing but under that all that exists is age old anger and grief and it is going to consume him
#i do think that this pit of anger was eventually covered and soothed by the ponds#but he didn't adress it and he couldn't even look at it until he was twelve#when he stopped pushing back and repressing everything and finally allowed himself to exist as he was#but ok listen#its all layed out in the first 3 episodes of season 5 and in the way amy sees him#episode 1. here is the new doctor he is energetic and reeling and fun#episode 2. the space whale comparison. here is the new doctor. he is unthinkably ancient and almost godlike but he is so so kind#and patient and good. he is ancient and lonely but he can't stand to see children cry. so the doctor helps people#episode 3. daleks. the doctor is a soldier. these are his age old enemies. he wants them dead and he will stop at nothing#all logic and reason vanish. he is hitting the dalek with a pipe and yelling his head off while amy watches in horror#like obviously we know why but amy didnt#this is not a sane or rational man he is unstable and angry#and in that episode he was stripped back to what he largely is: hate#you would make a good dalek ect ect ect#anyway 3 episodes with 3 very distinct and equally definitely traits layed out like: here you go#i don't like elevens era much but those first 3 episodes were great#doctor who#eleven#amy#eleventh doctor#matt smith#dr who#dw#i mean idk this is what river literally had to spell out for him#eleven was careening completely out of control#how long til doctor means warrior indeed?#mine

things we learn about scully in s1
she has a godson (and she told his mother that she thinks mulder is cute)
she did her residency in forensic medicine
she's good with dogs and is naturally drawn to all kinds of animals (even evil-looking monkeys)
she wants to keep her christmas tree up all year because her father always made her take it down as soon as the holiday was over
(and she was never positive that her father, who was in the navy and involved in the cuban blockade, was truly proud of her, because she joined the FBI instead of becoming a full-time doctor like he had wanted)
((and he didn't say "i love you" the last time he spoke to her. ouch))
when she was 14, she stole one of her mother's cigarettes, which she thought was disgusting, but she wanted to do something Forbidden for once
she once forgot her own birthday (which is february 23rd) when she was studying for her exams
she has a little cat sign on her apartment door <3
when challenged by the preacher's kid, she refused to deny the power of God; she was raised catholic, and remembers that "God never lets the devil steal the show"
(she's almost always wearing a cross necklace, even while declaring that she considers science sacred)
((and yes, her favorite movie is the exorcist))
she took some biology courses on bugs and is now going to tell you some bug facts
she has two brothers, one younger and one older
her dad- with whom she did not have the greatest of relationships- nicknamed her "starbuck"
(he called her this after the steady and rational first mate character from moby dick; all the more cruel when you consider he pushed her aside for joining the FBI rather than doing the "logical" thing, becoming a doctor. to cast her in a role of the dutiful daughter without her permission and then create a conditional sense of love is just. so mean. it's a miracle she didn't turn out as emotionally repressed as he did)

Autism movie/show deep dive and my very general thoughts on them!
(everyones different these are my own opinions as an autistic woman please watch for yourself and share any additional thoughts you have on them!)
Music (2021)
Tumblr media
Enough said.... had to get this one over with 0/10
Adam (2009)
Tumblr media
I found most of these movies to be outdated BUT I actually really appreciate Hugh Dancy's recreation of an autistic character (those who know him as Will in Hannibal would probably also agree). Even though originally I wasn't a fan of the ending I came to appreciate it that he wasn't 'saved' by romance and that it proved he was able to be independent and had great character growth while still respecting himself and his passions. I think it offered a decent insight to the different aspects of autistic joy, passion, while still including the difficult aspects with socializing, navigating relationships, grief, and meltdowns but now being overshadowed by them or 'becoming a problem'. However, I do love space so that could've also been responsible for my love for this movie. 8/10
Heartbreak High (2022)
Tumblr media
I absolutely love Chloé Hayden who is autistic herself so her character in the show feels real and more relatable. Pretty much what I said about 'Adam' but to an extreme I think the script and character interactions are such a fantastic and understandable demonstration of what being an autistic women is like (granted everyones experience is different). Cannot wait for the next season! This show is such a great modern day representation and not based in stereotypes like others are 10/10
Big Bang Theory (2007)
Tumblr media
I will never not defend this show - I know people tend to hate this because Sheldon is heavily stereotypical but I find him incredibly relatable as I do fall into a lot of these stereotypes myself. Once again everyones experiences are different so I don't understand why people write this show off completely. Love it 10/10
Atypical (2017)
Tumblr media
Unfortunately I don't have much to say about this show in regards to his autism because the constant inconsistencies during scenes deserve their own post and were too distracting to focus on anything else. Another thing that upset me about this is that the show is meant to take place in Connecticut yet they filmed in one of the most recognizable aquariums in the west coast. This show probably could've been good if it was just made better/had quality control. The only thing I remember liking was the pros and cons list because I also do that. 4/10
Mozart and the Whale (2005)
Tumblr media
I'm going to preface this one specifically that I know everyone's autism presents differently but I almost found her... offensive? I think this is because it was made in 2005 and is just outdated but I felt like a lot of the characters especially hers were more caricatures than characters. Sheldon being stereotypical is one thing but this felt kind of insulting? I'm having a hard time putting it into words. There were moments I liked though - it was a weird back and forth. 5/10
What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
Tumblr media
Other than the mistreatment/beating/abuse I actually am pretty fond of this movie. Once again, outdated. But almost... endearing in a way (minus the mistreatment once again). I hope anyone who has seen it will understand what I feel. I did find the love interest annoying but that is unrelated to this post yet I felt the need to warn you all, I don't like her. 7.5/10
My Name is Khan (2010)
Tumblr media
I watched this movie six years ago in school before my diagnosis and I didn't even remember or realize he was autistic but I do remember having generally positive thoughts on this movie ?/10 (someone let me know if its worth a rewatch.
A Brilliant Young Mind (2014) ((also called X+Y))
Tumblr media
There is a lot of downtime in this movie so it can be kind of boring but it is honestly one of my comfort/go to movies. Of course its the whole "autistics are math geniuses" thing but the movie itself I think is sweet. It shows his diagnosis, he loses his father, he has almost a fill in father who coaches his math, his mother is really supportive of him but not in a savior kind of way, he experiences going out of the country for a competition, struggles with socializing/overwhelm, romantic interests, and there is another character who is autistic and his struggles are also shown in a relatable way, nothings (in my opinion) is annoyingly over exaggerated like it sometimes can be in movies. 9/10
The Good Doctor (2017)
Tumblr media
I never actually finished the show because the person I was watching it with kept making fun of me by relating myself to him. Since then I also haven't seen much of a positive reaction from other people either but please let me know your thoughts on it! ?/10
The Imitation Game (2014)
Tumblr media
Alan Turing himself was autistic and so even though it's not a main focus of this movie I still wanted to include it because I love this movie! 9/10
Sherlock Holmes (timeless)
Tumblr media
I have to also through him in here, obviously some versions are more autistic coded than others but I'm going to generally say all of them are great autistic representation <3 10/10
Not Dead Yet (2023)
Tumblr media
Like in Heartbreak High, Rick Glassman an autistic actor plays an autistic character and I think its another great modern day representation. It obviously isn't the main focus but they honestly do a pretty good job being educational in regard to social situations/difficulties and explain it in a way that people can learn from. 10/10
Bones (2005)
Tumblr media
I honestly can't remember if they ever say it but Temperance is 100% autistic and I think this is a very endearing show. Since its not the main focus I don't have much to say other than sharing my recommendation 9/10
Criminal Minds (2005)
Tumblr media
I mean... enough said. I love Reid with my whole heart. He is very much the 'autistic genius' again but you can't not love Reid! 10/10
Community (2009)
Tumblr media
Abed. Another one that doesn't really need much to be said about it. Abed is great 10/10
Dr Who (timeless) ((quite literally and figuratively))
Tumblr media
Now this could be considered a reach or projection but Dr Who... autistic! simple as that 10/10
House (2004)
Tumblr media
I had to just throw this one in at the end because its really just another version of 'Holmes' and 'Watson' now as 'House' and 'Wilson'. Sherlock, previously said as autistic means House is also autistic 10/10

I’ve noticed that space whales appear in Star Wars, Doctor Who, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Monkey Wrench.
Interesting.
Edit: Honorary mention to the federation starfleet’s cetacean ops in Star Trek too.
Difference is that those whales (and dolphins) are on the ships, not travelling through space on their own.

Agatha: The Zweihänder is a double-edged, straight bladed long sword that was up to 213 centimeters long. Carried across the shoulder like a halberd, it was the hallmark weapon of the Landsknechte mercenaries of the early sixteenth century.
