Trains abound yet again! Today from Jaipur to Pushkar. Two hours on the train followed by 45 in a car crossing a mountain and we arrived.

Pushkar seems nice! It’s a mid-desert town, built around an oasis. It’s also a hot backpacker spot; we’ve seen more white people in one day here than the rest of India put together. It’s also really flipping hot weather, touched 40° today!

Coolest part of arriving was discovering that the girl checking us in to the hostel was from Ystrad Mynach! Small world!

After settling in we wandered into town. It’s all very narrow streets and fast bikes, with cows and dogs and wild pigs everywhere. It feels alive, it’s pretty cool. We made our way to the lake, where we were given flowers to throw in the water for luck. This led to us being given a full rite and getting saffron on our heads! Sadly it ended with them requesting some really big donations and I wasn’t as quick on the breaks as I’d like, so we gave them more than I would have liked to. None the less, the ritual was really interesting and an enjoyable experience. These people are really good with tourists... one woman took Ede’s had and before she knew it the woman was doing henna! Then asking for payment!

We did a little souvenir shopping then headed back to the hostel for a swim. Cool water was a blessing on such a hot day!

This evening we went to the cable car, which ran to a temple atop a mountain. The temple was nothing special (except for some cute monkeys) but we got up at sunset, and the views from the top were absolutely phenomenal. It helps that to the South is flat desert as far as the eye can see. We took about a million pictures, but I’ll pick a few for here.

We headed down and got a curry before bed. Looking forward to tomorrow!

Stop one is in Rajasthan. Though I do mention Jaipur and them visiting it, this bit takes place in a small town there (which is where they are staying). Just some domestic Victuuri right now. 

When Yuuri, Victor, and many of their friends and fellow skaters came to India, they knew they would have a lot to see and do. There were many different places with their own beauty and they had to take it all in. This was how they were going to relax. Their first stop would be Jaipur, a city founded back in 1727. It was a good place to start because it had a lot of tourists and had a lot of history behind it. Although it was hot, they were not too worried because they were prepared for the heat. Somehow, it just seemed right to start here over anywhere else.

As the capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur was known for it’s beautiful pink terracotta buildings. It had been called The Pink City for a reason and everyone was having a great time admiring these gorgeous buildings. Since it was filled with tourists, everyone decided to stay far from most of the action. They were fortunate to find some places to stay while they were visiting. The skaters were taken to hostels in nearby towns to get some privacy. These homes were not bad at all. They were air-conditioned and far from most of the noise and bustle of the city. They had clean toilets, soft beds, and lots of peace and quiet. It was a good place.

However, there were still some animals wandering about on the streets; stray dogs, goats, cows, and chickens were running about. If there was any noise, it was usually from the animals fighting each other or running about. There were also mosquitoes and various bugs that were a nuisance in the area. Everyone but Yuuri was getting bitten by some bug. All the bug sprays, incense, and lotions weren’t much.

That had been the case this morning. Bugs were fluttering about on the ceiling. Light poured through the window of the room they were staying in but it was the roosters from outside that were waking everyone up. Yuuri rolled over and wrapped his arms around Victor who was barely awake. They were more or less used to the change in time but it still felt like it was too early to get up. It was because of all the noises. Everyone was up and moving about. For a second, he had forgotten where he was.

Then he saw the lizard crawling across the top of the wall and he knew it was India. This was not the first little lizard to come in and it certainly wouldn’t be the last. They were big and small, long tails or no tails at all. They weren’t a problem at all, just an adorable little sight.

Victor let out a little moan and looked over his shoulder. “Good morning, my Yuuri.”

“Morning.” Yuuri whispered in his ear, looking at where the little lizard was. “We have another one today.”

Victor followed his gaze. “That one doesn’t have a tail.”

“I know but it looks like he’s growing a new one.” He pointed to the stubby tail that the lizard had. The little guy was still hanging around, waiting for some flies or bugs to come by. They were grateful for the lizards for taking care of the bug problem. That was a good thing because Victor still had some mosquito bites on his arms and legs.

“Scratch me?” He suggested, holding out his arm. Yuuri obliged and began to scratch those tiny bites gently. “That feels good.”

“Don’t forget to take the malaria medication today. It’s that time.”

“But Yuuri, I hate the taste of those pills! They are so bitter!”

“I know but we need them. Look how much you’ve been bitten.” Yuuri pointed out, still scratching the back of Victor’s hand. There were at least six bites on it. “I guess it could be worse though.”

“How can anything be worse than this?”

“Um, well…” Yuuri tried to come up with something. Victor was itchy and unable to stay still because of the mosquitos. Even under the safety of the mosquito net, he didn’t feel too comfortable. “I guess it could be…”

“Ugh, gross!” They heard Yuri yelling from the other room. “Someone forgot to flush!”

“It could be that.”

Victor rolled over and held out his other hand for scratching. This one had seven bites on it so Yuuri got to work. “Yes, that is worse.”

Day 10, Jodhpur part 1

Last night some friends we’d made at the hostel before said we should come and meet us for some drinks but when I asked less than an hour later if we were alright to come now, I didn’t get a reply. So rude. Stood up twice by this girl now; I won’t be chasing her anymore. I skyped my mum instead.

First thing this morning, we went to the train station in a rush to get the last few tickets on tomorrow’s train to Jaipur. It was quite stressful; I don’t want to be stuck in this town any longer than I need to be. The station was well air conditioned and there were dozens of people lounging on the floor, including one man with a bruised and swollen face like a plum. At the counter, we were sent right around the side and back of the set of buildings to the less well air conditioned reservation office and we waited behind a skinny oriental asian man, whose sweat had formed a perfect outline of where his backpack had been, and his travel companion, who had a paper mask covering his nose and mouth. I was relieved when we got our tickets.

Back out in the heat, we bought some drinks and I had an ice lolly while we looked for something cheap to eat. We came to a food court that looked unpleasant but seemed to be very popular so we gave it a go. I couldn’t even liken it to a McDonald’s or any other UK fast food because their restaurants have all gotten quite stylish. Think retro McD’s, or perhaps whatever comes to mind with the typical tacky American fast food joint. Brights lights illuminated the canteen tables and chairs and we were brought pav bharjis on white plastic trays with selections dividing the different components of the meal. We neglected the water in plastic cups for fear it was straight out the tap, perish the thought.

We had an argument after that. I thought we should get a cab straight to the ‘blue side of town’. Matt thought we should walk back to the hotel and ask how much it ought to cost to get there. I thought it was silly to walk all the way in the middle of the day when there wouldn’t be that much difference in the price. There was some miscommunication as to where we were going when we got in the tuctuc and we both snapped at each other and ended up being heinously overcharged for the half a mile back to the hotel.

Ive never had an argument with matt, or with anyone really, like this before. Nothing ever ascends into raised voices with me. My emotions get too much and i have to cry to release it and my words get small and communication is slow and painful. This time i needed to cry, briefly, before I stormed off of the tuctuc and before I ran up the seven flights of stairs, and then it was gone. Then it was just my anger and my heart pounding and my argument reiterating itself in my head over and over until i was ready to win. I was definitely, indisputably right here. I told myself that, making eye contact with myself in the bathroom mirror, having locked myself away so that we could both have time to cool off.

The tuctuc driver hadn’t actually known what I meant when I asked him to take us to the blue houses, despite them being what Jodhpur is famous for. The family at the guesthouse pointed us in the right direction and we started walking. We’d make up quite quickly. The city got so much more pleasant as we got closer to the old city; it was so much quieter and the pollution in the air diffused with every step. We soon started coming across blue houses. Most were pastelly shades but we found beautiful, bright aqua walls, minty doorways and cool sorbet blue steps dotted between. The streets got incredibly narrow, way too small for the ambitious drivers around here to even consider taking a tuctuc down.

Some old men in sandals sat at the foot of a gnarly tree gestured for us to go the other way at a fork we’d come to, a dead end at side door to the fort on the right. Around the other corner, after winding through the slithers of the blue buildings was a deep green lake, with stone steps at our end, reaching out to the dusty orange stones at the other, and the ring of the fort beyond. There had been no tourists around and only a few locals; I felt like we’d stumbled upon a secret. It was a slice of peace of in noisy city, quiet oozing out of the water.

It wasn’t without its flaws. There were still piles of rubbish littered along the sides and plastic bags floating in the murky waters. There are huge stinking piles of rubbish throughout this place. The sewers were overflowing in the some areas of the old part of town and others had huge stacks of rubble spilling down from a wreckage.

There were lots of children roaming this part of town hassling me and Matt for spare change. A little boy who can’t have been older than 5 threw a large rock at him as we were walking away, which didn’t make it above knee level, but he wasn’t happy.

We’d been making our way in the direction of the zip lining. It turns out that we actually don’t get free entry to the fort with it (so my moaning over that £7.20 yesterday was redundant) but we did get free entry to the grounds. We came in to the fort from the other side to the usual tourist entrance. The grounds were situated through a giant wooden door. They were incredibly peaceful; we came down the steps to a sea of green shrubbery and flowers and trees with big waxy leaves. The fort walls hugged the edges, with archways hiding cool alcoves. A few Indian men sat quietly sketching on a rug on an expanse of grass and dozens of squirrels jumped and played with each other, running around the grounds. The air was so much cleaner. If the lake was a slice of peace, this garden was a cake.

The zip lining was amazing and so much fun! We had views over the blue city and zipped across the green lakes encircled by the fort. I felt like a happy dog, with the wind blowing in my face as I rushed down the line. I wasn’t too good at stopping to begin with as I came hurtling towards the guy at the other end, but I got better. Matt just kept spinning around.

After the zip lining, we sat at the cafe by the garden and had an overpriced pepsi. It was so beautifully refreshing. It was cold. It was fizzy. It was everything one desires in a soft drink.

Then, we searched for a spot to watch the sunset. Finally, after being whistled down from our first viewpoint and ducking past a cricket game, we found a good one on the edge of the fort with two English girls and a group of young local guys. The sky was so hazy with pollution as the pink sun slipped behind the mountains.

SORRY (Ko Lanta and Phuket; and Jaipur)

It’s been a while because my laptop broke down (I was forced to buy a new one but I do love new things) and also I forgot to write completely.

So last I checked in, I was arriving in Ko Lanta, I think. I was only there for a couple days but I saw the beach, which was very relaxing and beautiful. It was a heavily-tourist-populated place but there were a lot families and older couples which was a nice break from the young 20 years old.

I went to a stray cat and dog sanctuary and got to walk one of the dogs which was mostly nice. I was walking with a british girl (they paired us up based on the dogs’ friends). We talked for a little while- I’m actually visiting her hometown in a few weeks and she said she’d show me around which was really nice of her. We were sent to walk along the beach but I vaguely remember them saying not to walk in one part of it but we ignored that and encountered two large, angry stray dogs. It was actually really scary because they followed us for a while and then ran at us. Nothing happened to us or the dogs but they were aggressive and there was a definite possibility something could’ve happened.

I woke up early the following morning early (well 8am) and swam from 9am-10am which was really nice because there were absolutely no young people so I didn’t give a fuck and could just lounge with the older couples. They don’t judge me. They don’t care that I have rolls, they want my youth. (just kidding hahahaha).

Then I took a long boat ride to Phuket where I encountered more trouble (take a shot every time something goes wrong on this trip). First of all, the bus missed my stop so I had to wait til the end for it to go back (you just tell them your stop and they arrange the route). My hostel had overbooked and they were gonna make me stay somewhere else for a night. I said I’d do it if I got a discount. No way am I suffering without compensation. They wouldn’t budge at all and so I stayed at a different one entirely. The hostel wasn’t bad (it was cheaper but the room was mixed which I’ve come to hate- men snore, if you didn’t know) but it was an annoying turn in events. I wandered around a little bit for a day or two, just checking some shops. There was a small pool in the hostel where I swam because it got boiling hot in the day (I’m talking 38 degrees sometimes). I met two European men, aged about 60, (Swedish and Spanish) who were travelling with their wives through southeast Asia for a month. They explained how they were painters who were looking for inspiration. I enjoyed talking to them way more than the youngsters.

The following day, I’d previously found a ceramic studio where you could make something for $15 (it was my last day in Thailand so I always spend my last dollars and I had extra this time because I’d saved on the hostel). I went to the studio and, funnily, was surrounded by children as I made my pets out of clay. It was a humbling moment to say the least. I couldn’t paint them as I was leaving the next day but I still made all 3 and felt at least a bit fulfilled. Next, I went to the cat cafe in town which had stunning but honestly, very uninterested, cats everywhere. I pet them for a bit but stayed for the strong wifi connection.

The following day was spent in transit as I had a 10am flight to Singapore, then an 8pm flight to Jaipur, India. I oddly had a very enjoyable time at the airport in Singapore. I’d originally planned on spending a few hours in the city but became overwhelmed by the shopping and restaurant choices in the airport so I stuck around and almost weirdly enjoyed 8 hours in the airport. I bought my laptop (tax free!) and some makeup and had some pizza (finally!). Then, I took a long ass flight to India where I arrived at midnight (I’d been in 3 different zones that day so the day was LONG). I passed out immediately at my hostel.

I was in Jaipur, the capital of whatever region of India it was, I honestly don’t know. They had quite a few palaces and temples, which I visited for a little while but they’re expensive for foreigners. On my first day, actually, I started by going to the museum as I figured it’d be good to educate myself before seeing the rest of the city. It had a lot of stuff but not that much knowledge, if that makes sense. Oh well, I got the student rate because I fooled them with my youth travel card so I only lost a couple bucks. Then I went to a cafe, and some markets later on. At the cafe, there were three 30 year olds sitting near me. Two indian men and a white (I later learned, French girl). One of the men, who was with the French girl, had lived in Niagara Falls and the other was just completely Indian, and was their friend. The latter guy just started talking to me so I answered the questions but i was listening and was very invested in a podcast (Stuff You Should Know) so I was annoyed. But he kept asking questions and then brought up that he was a tour guide and started showing me all the video testimonies of his. I’m cheap and good at directions so I don’t need a city guide at all. Plus, it wasn’t a large city so I was fine walking. He left me alone until I got up when they had oddly also conveniently been leaving and went on a solid 30 minute spiel about himself and his tours and how he loves a challenge and isn’t in it for the money, he just wants to make people happy and he could “tell i’m suspicious” (nah i just thought it was annoying and pushy) but wanted to prove me wrong, blah blah blah. It was awful. The couple was normal and would talk to me a bit when he would shut up. I said no a few times before he “gave up” and said we should all have a cup of coffee and just chat. I thought, why not. The other two were normal and had tips for me about being a foreigner in India so I joined. He ordered us all hot coffee which I hate (I only drink iced coffee, excuse you) but whatever. He said, I’m not gonna talk about my guides anymore, you can just ask us questions. That was a lie. He kept talking about himself whenever the conversation verred away from him and then, at the end, said it was so nice to get to know you (like wtf I literally got to say 3 words about me and he’d always ignore whatever anyone else said and start talking about himself again). We were leaving and the couple left, and he insisted AGAIN to guide me. I said no like a bunch of times before he finally walked away. That annoyed me quite a bit.

Okay now, the following day in Jaipur, I saw the city palace, bought my train ticket and walked around a bit, which was nice. And on the last day, I went to the Amber Fort/Palace which was really beautiful. 

The people here stare a ton at me. I thought that I’d, not necessarily like it but think it’d make me feel interesting or something (like a celebrity, it’s shallow, whatever, we all live in 2017, fame is a common fascination) but it’s actually really uncomfortable and not at all fun. I don’t like it. People driving stare out their windows, people walking by crane their necks, people just go up to me, asking where I’m from. Some drivers start asking very personal questions. It’s all too much. I get that they’re curious but boundaries! The worst was actually yesterday when I took a train from Jaipur to Agra (where I’m writing from now). I was in a booth with a bunch of maybe later 20 year old men who were in the Indian Army. They left me alone for a couple hours which was misleadingly encouraging. I read online that people would be curious and at the half way point, one of them started to ask questions. I had headphones in and he noticed so, after a few questions, he stopped. Then two minutes later, he started up again. He kept doing this, and a crowd would form (I wanted to take a photo because everyone would just sit around me even though they couldn’t understand what I was saying, as the English speaking one pointed out). It was funny for a moment but I had two hours left and the increasingly more awkward questions kept coming. I would respond but not offer any back and forth conversation (i.e. what’s your name, etc). I just wanted to be left alone, as maybe selfish as that is. I was tired (I was on the train for 5 hours and had barely eaten) and had had enough of the interrogation. Some of the questions made me really uncomfortable. Asking my parents’ names and occupations, my siblings’ names and occupations, my favourite foods (wtf), for photos of my family, if I had a boyfriend (I lied and said I did because I was uncomfortable), what his name was (lol), did I have photos of him. He started to show me photos on his phone of white people he’d met, too. Then they started to ask me what my plans were in Agra. I said I was meeting friends who were already there (I’ve had to come up with a false alibi often like my family is waiting for me in a restaurant, my brother is arriving tomorrow). It just made me feel unsafe, even though they didn’t have bad intentions, but I still didn’t like the lack of boundaries. They actually helped me get my luggage out and shook my hand when I left so I’m sure they weren’t intending to be weird but man, I was happy to leave.

Today, I woke up with a cold (boo) and visited the Taj Mahal. And that’s it really. I was going to do something else- go to the Agra Fort- but it costs $10 and I already spent $20 on the Taj Mahal and I’m tired and sick so I’m staying in.
