Maciej Obara makes a striking ECM debut with Unloved, an album whose expressive range embraces tender lyricism and impassioned, fiery, powerful playing. With the exception of the title track – written by Krzysztof Komeda (spiritus rector of modern jazz in Poland) for Janusz Nasfeter’s film of the same name – themes are by the highly inventive alto saxophonist. Obara emphasizes however that his themes “serve as outlines, from which our sound is set free. My friends are amazing improvisers. I love their ability to move around freely in open spaces, and the way they shape and give colour to what I have in mind…It’s more like composing in real time.” The players have been developing their concept for several years: Maciej Obara and pianist Dominik Wania, another major talent, first met in a Tomasz Stanko ensemble a decade ago. Since 2012 they have been joined by two highly creative Norwegian musicians, bassist Ole Morten Vågan and drummer Gard Nilssen. (Vågan’s ECM credits include work with Thomas Strønen’s Time Is A Blind Guide, while Nilssen can be heard on Mathias Eick’s Skala.) Marita Albán Juárez Quartet: Polish jazz from Peru

Marita and José Manuel were both born in Poland, while their father is from Peru, and their music has been largely shaped by their upbringing, which was filled with the spirit of Latin American culture whilst they were living in Poland.

The Marita Albán Juárez Quartet is a group founded by two Peruvian-Polish siblings, vocalist Marita and drummer José Manuel, in 2011. They teamed up with Dominik Wania (on piano) and Andrzej Święs (on bass) to combine the sounds of tropicalismo and Afro-Peru together with Latin Jazz.

For Marita, it is Peruvian music and her father’s heritage that have influenced them both more than any Polish school of music. Asked about her dual identity, Marita said that for her the idea of a single nationality is absurd: “I see myself as Polish as I see myself Peruvian.”

She stresses the importance of Latin America in the quartet’s music, but adds that it makes its way into their songs subconsciously. The group is more concerned with connecting and inspiring the audience, rather than focusing on their background.

Marita admits that the beginnings of diversity can be observed on the Polish music scene, but for her, it is still not enough to label it multicultural.

POLAND: Piotr Damasiewicz & Power of the Horns Ensemble-Polska (Astigmatic Records 2020)

A musical visionary, some outstanding instrumentalists, the 10th anniversary of the collective's founding, a reflection on Polishness, and finally - a 4,000 km-long walking pilgrimage of 100 solo concerts in 100 temples. These events, symbols, experiences and facts have somehow been combined into one coherent whole - the 'Polska' LP, the first release by Piotr Damasiewicz & Power of the Horns Ensemble since 2013. Led by trumpeter Piotr Damasiewicz, the recording also features saxophonist Maciej Obara and pianist Dominik Wania, who have released two albums on ECM as members of Maciej Obara Quartet. This repertoire has been influenced by the jazz that Piotr Damasiewicz discovered whilst building his musical identity - the Polish jazz of the 1990s and early 2000s. It was a period when he often listened to Piotr Wojtasik with Tomasz Szukalski and Billy Harper (it was the 'Quest' album that was the main inspiration behind 'Billy'), or some of the unearthly recordings of the Polish trumpet master Tomasz Stanko, such as 'Bosonossa', 'Litania', and 'From the Green Hill'. Damasiewicz spent that period of his life in Katowice, which he still associates with the hard work of miners. It also remains a symbol of Polish industrial characterised by heavy groove... That's why he has composed 'Kleofas', an homage to one of the Katowice coal mines.

Koncert PIANO.PL Doroty Miśkiewicz to hołd dla polskiej pianistyki. Fortepian to polska specjalność, spośród wielu doskonałych muzyków to właśnie pianiści wiodą w Polsce prym, zauważa artystka. Jako, że gatunkiem najbliższym Dorocie jest jazz, podkreśla nade wszystko dokonania polskich pianistów jazzowych, którzy spektakularnie podążają drogą wyznaczoną niegdyś przez światowej sławy muzyka, Krzysztofa Komedę. Tę drogę wyznaczył także inny znakomity pianista, Fryderyk Chopin, który był nie tylko genialnym kompozytorem, ale i... improwizatorem!

Koncert PIANO.PL jest kontynuacją bezprecedensowego wydarzenia zrealizowanego w maju 2016 roku w Warszawie, podczas którego na jednej scenie wraz z Dorotą Miśkiewicz zaprezentowali się: Leszek Możdżer, Włodzimierz Nahorny, Marcin Wasilewski, Grzegorz Turnau, Andrzej Jagodziński, Bogdan Hołownia, Krzysztof Herdzin, Dominik Wania, Michał Tokaj, Piotr Orzechowski, Tomasz Kałwak, Lutosławski Piano Duo (Bartek Wąsik i Emilia Sitarz), Atom String Quartet oraz gościnnie Henryk Miśkiewicz.

Płyta CD i DVD z rejestracją koncertu miała swoją premierę 28 października 2016. Projekt znalazł ogromne uznanie w oczach krytyków i środowiska muzycznego, które przełożyło się na przyznanie płycie następujących nagród I wyróżnień: FRYDERYKI 2016 - nominacja dla Doroty Miśkiewicz w kategorii Jazzowy Artysta Roku, nominacja w kategorii Jazzowy Album Roku; JAZZ TOP 2016 magazynu Jazz Forum - zwycięzca w kategoriach: najlepszy album i najważniejsze wydarzenie jazzowe; KORYFEUSZ POLSKIEJ MUZYKI 2016 – nominacja w kategorii ,,Osobowość Roku”.

W Mielcu Dorota Miśkiewicz zagra koncert, który jest „pomniejszoną" prezentacją unikalnego przedsięwzięcia, zrealizowanego w Warszawie. Na scenie pojawią się trzej pianiści reprezentujący trzy muzyczne pokolenia oraz Atom String Quartet.

Na koncert składają się piosenki należące do kanonu polskiej muzyki, a ich wybór podyktowany został osobistymi sympatiami Doroty, subiektywnym odczuwaniem muzyki i tekstu. Decyzje aranżacyjne dotyczące wybranych utworów pozostawione zostały pianistom. Niektóre aranżacje są zaskakujące, pokazują nowe oblicze mniej lub bardziej znanych piosenek, inne dążą do prostoty, nie odbiegając znacznie od oryginałów. Jedne i drugie zachwycają!
