Review: Dr.G Green Mild Up Sun+

Dr.G Green Mild Up Sun+ SPF50+ PA++++ is a suncream that is very popular in Korea (at time of writing it is #2 on the Korean oliveyoung's best sellers list for suncare) and it's easy to see why. It is a gentle, fragrance free zinc oxide suncream, with a minimal white cast, and designed for daily use. It's marketed towards those with sensitive skin, and emphasises that it can be used by anyone regardless of age or gender

It is manufactured by Kolmar Korea, which gives me confidence in its formulation and UV protection claims.

The texture is soft and creamy, and spreads easily across the skin without tugging. When it dries down it is a little more drying than your typical organic/chemical SPF, but much less so than a lot of inorganic/mineral ones. When it comes to the white cast of course I can only speak for my own experience with it, and I'm basically a ghost, but I can easily say it has the best white cast of any mineral-only sun cream that I've tried. Can you... tell which half I put it on?

(fyi: I always apply sunscreen liberally. I've seen some people claim mineral sunscreens dry clear, and show videos of themselves applying the tiiiiniest bit to prove it. I generally use 3 fingers for my face and neck, so you're looking at 1 1/2 on half)

I'd guess they use Nano zinc oxide to achieve this finish, which is something I wish more brands would do. There's some fearmongering going on about Nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, but so far as I can tell there's about as much validity to it as the claim that parabens cause cancer (see: practically none) and it clearly has its advantages for anyone who prefers inorganic sunscreens.

It is also formulated with antioxidants including heartleaf, centella asiatica, and pycnogenol (full inci list can be found in the oliveyoung link at the bottom). Antioxidant ingredients are great to see anywhere, but especially in sunscreen as they can help to boost the protection your skin has against external stressors!

Honestly, if you're more of an organic sunscreen sort of person, I probably wouldn't rush to buy it. It's very good for what it is, but there are options out there (including from Dr.G) which will be a bit more moisturising, and won't leave any white cast regardless of your skin tone for sure. I'm always going to be a little biased against mineral sunscreen, as even if (like this one) I can use it without a white cast, I can't necessarily say the same for someone with dark skin.

HOWEVER, if you generally prefer mineral sunscreen anyway, this is easily the best one I've tried. In the past I've used some hyped up mineral sunscreens and been sorely disappointed, but this one really delivered on its promises for me!

As Dr.G is a popular brand and this is one of their most popular products, most online K-Beauty sellers will have this! The price varies, but is generally what I’d consider ‘the more affordable side of pricy’.

As promised, I got my package and I am going to give you an idea of what I will be reviewing next. 

The picture sparks amazing products. I am so excited to start using these products. Okay, let’s start with I’m From - Rice Face Mask. I have been dying to use this mask as I am in love with products that contain rice. They literally make my skin sparkle. I did buy I’m From - Rice Toner as well to boost the effect of having a brighter skin. I have tried using the face mask twice till now and I can say that it makes the skin softer, however, it has rice grains to give scrubbing effect so I don’t recommend it for sensitive skin types. I feel like these two products are very promising

I have also made a second purchase for COSRX - Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser, as it really helped control my oily skin and prevented breakouts. While purchasing CNP Laboratory - Anti-Pore Black Head Clear Kit was a result of EuniUnni recommendation ~You should really check her videos, you’ll become an addict ;) ~. I am dealing with my pores lately as I mentioned in my previous posts that's why I am super excited to try this product and see the results. A review coming for that, that's for sure! 

Exfoliating for me is essential. I feel like my skin is never clear if I am not using something to clear the dead skin and refresh the pores. I purchased Dr.G - Brightening Peeling Gel 120g due to a local store recommendation, they told me that this will help with dead skin buildup. 

I have been looking for the perfect sunscreen for a long time, and I have heard good reviews on MISSHA - All-Around Safe Block Essence Sun Milk SPF50+ PA+++ and I really wanted to give it a try, so far I have been using it for 4 days and its very light and not sticky at all. I really liked the effect.

I wanted to also give PETITFEE - Koelf Madecassoside Clarifying Body Spray a try for my back acne. I checked the reviews and I want to see if that really works or not. I will include that in future reviews as well. 

Finally, sheet masks from make p:rem one is Comfort Me. Brightening Hole Mask and the other is Comfort Me. Firming Hole Mask. I really like sheet masks that give you firming effect and I hope this one works well with my skin. So excited.

Thanks to @myskinmentor.drg and @0.8l_usa for letting me Try this Brightening peeling gel at a discount in exchange for my review. 💚 Gentle: I tried another similar Peeling Gel on my face, and did Not like it because it hurt picking off the leftover product on my baby facial hair on my cheeks! (OUCH)! The Dr.G Brightening Peeling Gel however, is much gentler! I did use just a small amount at first though, just to be on the safe side. I also made sure my skin was damp, and avoided my cheek areas until I saw how it would be “peeling” off as it dried. I used an even tinier amount; after I rinsed off the other parts of my face, and massaged gently on my cheeks for just a few seconds and rinsed off. It didn’t stick! 👍🏻👏🏻🤩 💚 Skin Types: I would recommend for many skin types because it is Gentle, and I can attest to that! 💚 Main Ingredients: Mushroom 🍄 Extract, Althaea Rosea Flower Extract, Aloe Leaf Extract, Honey Extract, Licorice Root Extract, Willow Bark Extract, and Hydrogenated Castor Oil. 💚 What it Does: The Natural cellulose moisturizes skin after dead skin cells are removed. The natural facial Extracts leave the skin brighter. The Black Willow helps keep skin clear and toned. 💚 Scent: I noticed more of a “Mediciney” scent, not great, but not too bad either. 💚 My Thoughts: I have used this about 1 to 2 times a week, and even though it’s Gentle, I wouldn’t recommend using more than 3 times a week (depending on skin type). I notice my nose and forehead are more toned, and my upper cheek areas as well. These areas are also more clear and feels tighter. I have to say this product surprised me a lot. I used as a mild exfoliator and brighter. I usually have combo skin, oily on my t-zone but during winter is super dry. I do use scrubs but with my skin so dry I avoid them. This one is soft, meaning is used on wet skin to help exfoliate. Didn't have a strong smell, easy to use since you scrub and it starts creating some little white puffs. Is kind of fun to use and after scrubbing for a minute and rinsing my face felt amazingly soft and no dryness at all. skincare routines always starts off with a cleanser. a cleanser that suits ur skin type (dry, oily, combination or sensitive). it’s important to choose a correct cleanser for ur skin because if wrong cleanser would leads u to drier skin. if u feel ur face is tighten after cleansing, that proves that ur cleanser isn’t suitable for ur skin. always always put some toner after cleansing to prevent dry skin and to moisturizing ur skin.

here goes my skincare routine: • cleansing: i’m using 3ce water fit cleansing foam. it contains coconut sheer butter that protects and leaves skin smooth and moist.

• scrubbing: i’m using milk plus whitening facial scrub by beauty buffet but only once to twice in a week. it contains milk extracts and co-enzyme q10 which helps to brighten skin. it also contains mineral oil, vitamin b3 that moisturizes skin, leaving it soft, healthy and also protects skin from acne and irritations. facial scrubs exfoliates ur skin, u should do it once or twice a week but not everyday!

• face masks: after scrubbing, always remember to use masks. i’m using 3ce white milk pack to foam (it has really cute packaging!!) after facial scrub. it’s actually a white clay mask that removes excess sebum and impurities pores. it contains oatmeal and honey to keep skin dehydrated with tea tree extract helps to soothe the skin. it double cleanse skin too!

i would also use some sheet masks. because i have dry skin, so i use moisturizing masks all the times. etude house and nature republic has really nice and affordable sheet masks!

• toner: i use dr.g’s hydra intensive toner to soothe my skin. i also apply toner after removing makeups too because it also removes makeup stains that left after removing makeups and soothe ur skin.

• serum: i use etude house’s pink vital water serum. it’s one of my fave serum!! it gives me non-sticky finish and it really moisturizes my face. it smells good too and absorb into my face pretty well!!

• moisturizing: i use etude house’s aloe moistfull soothing lotion. it contains baobab tree extract and aloe vera (my fave).

• other skincare products: i personally would suggest nature republic’s aloe vera soothing & moisture 92% soothing gel. it’s their best product and one of the top korean skincare products. it contains 92% of pure aloe vera extract and it can be used as sleeping masks too. apply thick amount of the gel on ur face before sleeps, it moistures and soothe ur skins. u may apply it on ur acnes to dry up acnes. it can be used on face and bodies without any irritations, even can be apply on sunburns too!! for more uses of aloe vera gel, u can check it here

i also use nature republic’s california aloe vera 74 cooling eye serum and tony moly’s panda dream brightening eye base to brighten my dark circles and reduce my puffy eyes 💛

Used a sample of Holika Holika Smooth Egg Skin Peeling Gel; this is one of their few products without triethanolamine, apparently, and I was a bit curious as to how other peeling gels compare to the Dr.G one. Well, it was quite different; cloudy liquid with a strong fragrance that did not seem to be doing anything much, as I massaged my face with it - no pilling cellulose particles, no foam, nothing. I can’t tell if there is anything exfoliating in the ingredients, even. But my skin did feel exceptionally clean after, so there’s that. Would not buy.

Also using The History of Whoo’s Qi & Jin Essence samples, the fragrance is super strong and not to my liking, a strong, old-fashioned floral perfume smell, so I’m only putting it on my neck, it seems like it’d make my eyes water. The texture is quite nice though, a light yellow, non-greasy emulsion.

Review: Illiyoon Mild Easy-wash Sun Cream SPF50+ PA++++

Illiyoon is a Korean skincare brand owned by Amore Pacific, known for making gentle products for sensitive skin that are often compared to the French brand CeraVe. 

This sun cream, formulated by Kolmar, has become a favourite of mine for the colder months (which here in Scotland is roughly September-May...) for a few key reasons:

Firstly, its size. It’s very rare to find a Korean sunscreen that comes in a bigger package than 60ml, and this is 150ml! When it comes to a product like sunscreen, which you have to apply liberally and often, size matters. This also makes it more affordable- the price varies but on oliveyoung global, it’s $40 when not on sale (this is the highest price I’ve seen it at, btw). That’s $0.02/mL, which when compared to say the Dr.G Mild Up Sun+ which is $31 for 50ml and $0.62/mL on the same site, is a pretty damn good deal (although the latter does come with some pretty good ‘freebies’ whereas the former does not).

Secondly, its pump-type packaging. You can lock and unlock the pump itself to protect the formula from oxidising (fwiw, it has a 12 month PAO), so no worries there, and it makes applying this in the morning convenient. I do 3 layers of 1 pump each, spread across my whole face/neck with a few seconds in between to let it dry down. When applied this way, it sinks in well with a velvet/skin-like finish that isn’t greasy or drying. The formula is certainly on the more moisturising side, which makes it perfect for protecting the skin against harsh winter weather, but it hasn’t broken out my acne-prone skin after about 2 weeks of continuous use.

Thirdly and finally, the ‘easy-wash’ part. Winter tends to = dry and sensitised skin, which means if I can cut down on harsh products at all it’s appreciated. Unlike in the summer where I’m looking for a product I know won’t get sweated off, in the winter I do my best to avoid the need for a double cleanse. With this, I can skip an oil cleanser and only use a water based/foaming cleanser in the evening, which my skin barrier is loving.

Ingredients-wise it’s pretty simple; it has a few plant extracts towards the bottom of the inci list like skullcap root, angelica acutiloba root, and centella asiatica flower/leaf/stem extracts. Aside from that it’s fairly basic, it doesn’t have the ceramides that illiyoon is known for, or any particularly impressive actives- but this is not a complaint! For me, it’s most important that a sunscreen is user-friendly, and this one certainly is.

The UV filters used are homosalate, octisalate, uvinal A plus, tinosorb S, and mexoryl SX. These are all organic/chemical filters, meaning they won’t leave a white cast! I was happy to see it was an organic sun scream, as typically ‘mild’ in the world of Korean skincare means inorganic/mineral SPF filters.

The texture is a medium-weight cream, and it doesn’t sting my (very sensitive) eyes, or skin. It also hasn’t stained my white tops, which is something I’ve had trouble with in the past.

With all this in mind, I’d happily recommend the illiyoon mild easy-wash sun cream to anyone looking for a reliable and affordable sun cream to use in the winter. I’d say it’s probably not the best if it’s summer/very warm where you live, though, as it could sweat off in the heat

I bought this from ABHolic for ₩17,940 (~£11.25) which makes it ridiculously well priced if you ask me.

Um it really depends on your skin type though, but I feel like most of the products I use should be fine for you bc I have very sensitive skin :( for brand recommendations, Dr.G and cosrx are wonderful korean skincare brands~

I’ve used this about three times and I do think it really is brightening up my complexion a bit as I notice my red marks diminishing and my skin looks significantly less dull after each use. Another amazing thing is this product does not irritate my highly sensitive skin nor does it strip my skin of moisture,at all!! I’ve been dealing with some gnarly eczema around my nose this winter and was worried this would make matters worse but it doesn’t! I feel like in the colder months my skin really does benefit from using exfoliators like this as opposed to physical exfoliators because those tend to bother my skin a bit more. Overall, I enjoy this and will certainly continue to use this product..I may even purchase it at full price!
