Guilty Pleasure #5
Tumblr media
GABRIEL
Dir. SHANE ABBESS; Wri. SHANE ABBESS & MATT HYLTON TODD; Music. BRIAN CACHIA; Starring. ANDY WHITFIELD, DWAINE STEVENSON, SAMANTHA NOBLE, ERIKA HEYNATZ, HARRY PAVLIDIS, JACK CAMPBELL, MICHAEL PICCIRILLI, MATT HYLTON TODD, KEVIN COPELAND; R.T. 113 mins; 2007, Australia
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: An eternal war rages between Arcs (angels) and Fallen (demons) for the fates of human souls trapped in Purgatory, each side sending seven warriors to battle for Light or Darkness.  It now seems that the Fallen are winning, so Heaven send their only remaining champion, Gabriel (Whitfield), for one desperate last push to tip the scales back in their favour.  But as he begins to uncover the fates of his fellow Arcs, Gabriel finds his new human form weakening so far from the Light.
WHY IT’S GUILTY: Writer-director Shane Abbess’ debut feature is, in many ways, a derivative mess of a film, borrowing already well-worn ideas from much larger, far more expensive films and then trying to make them seem new and fresh with just a fraction of the budget and resources. It’s also almost unrelentingly bleak and brutal, the oppressively dour tone sometimes dragging and certainly crying out for some much needed humour to break things up.  And then there are the characters themselves – those who aren’t dangerously underwritten ciphers are as derivative and clichĂ©d as the plot, or given to sometimes life-threateningly baffling inconsistencies in behaviour and motivation.  This film shouldn’t work at all – it SHOULD be a dreary, stinking TURD, genuine cinematic toxic waste.  And yet

WHY IT’S A PLEASURE: Despite its myriad flaws, there’s fiendish creativity at work in this film that makes for surprisingly compelling viewing.  Shane Abbess has too much innate talent for this to turn into a sub-Underworld mash-up of The Prophecy and Blade Runner, and shows real skill in taking the decidedly miniscule budget (a mere 150,000 Aussie dollars) and stretching it into something that looks SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive.  He’s clearly learned every trick in the low budget book to bring his decidedly ambitious project to fruition, and it consistently shows in a selection of modest but surprisingly inventive set-pieces and the moodily evocative setting. He’s also helped enormously by a talented cast of (then) near unknowns, each bringing the patchily-written characters to vivid, fully-realised life and making us root for (or against) them despite their flawed conceptions – the late Andy Whitfield started out in Aussie soaps and similar TV before landing his first significant role here, and it quickly becomes clear that his turn as Gabriel was something of a training run for his true star-making break as the lead in the immensely popular series Spartacus: Blood & Sand as he proves a compellingly compassionate underdog hero here, a seemingly gentle soul driven to increasingly brutal extremes as the road ahead grows increasingly dark and twisted; Dwaine Stevenson and Michael Piccirilli, meanwhile, both create cracking, meaty villains as, respectively, dangerously nihilistic head Fallen Sammael and his lieutenant Asmodeus, a truly despicable, narcissistic monster who consistently delivers the film’s most full-on boo-hiss moments, and Samantha Noble raises disgraced, broken Arc Amitiel above the over-baked “hooker with a heart of gold” clichĂ© with a performance of genuinely heartbreaking vulnerability and tenderness. This is also a film of great beauty, even its most corrupt moments displaying deeply effective visual flair and ingenuity, while Abbess and co-writer Matt Hylton Todd (who also plays kind-hearted Arc Ithuriel) did sometimes manage to craft some moments of inspired originality amongst the more derivative material, as well as conjuring some compelling tension and enough true heart and emotional power to keep us invested until the genuinely arresting and surprisingly uplifting climax.  On its release, this became the second highest grossing Australian film of 2007, Abbess definitely proving he had real future potential, and he’s been delivering since with impressively edgy low budget sci-fi offerings like Infini and Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child, so it’s only a matter of time before he finally makes it TRULY big.  In the end, then, Gabriel may be pretty flawed, but it’s still a debut to be proud of.

COTTON SHORTAGE – Barbados’ cotton industry needs more hands and more lands to surpass the BDS$1 million in revenue it could generate this year. Chief executive officer of Exclusive Cottons of the Caribbean Inc., Adlai Stevenson, said they needed pickers and more than 300 acres for the production of West Indian sea island cotton, but only 90 were planted, and he linked this to the overall decline in agriculture. “Cotton is planted as a rotation crop to sugar, and sugar production has fallen. We are seeing [this] across the board, not only in cotton, but other output. We are seeing the impact of a fall-off in sugar production,” Stevenson said. “If the sugar industry expands production, they will need to rotate occasionally out of sugar. Cotton would be a beneficiary of that as well as sweet potato production, yam production, vegetables, you name it.” (SS)
BIDC HEAD TELLS TENANTS TO STEP UP – The Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) has been providing myriad opportunities for its Pelican Village tenants but it is up to them to take advantage. This is according to chief executive officer Sonja Trotman, who said the delinquent individuals prefer to run to the press than make the effort to help themselves. In an interview on Thursday, Trotman said she was “tired” of negative news being published about the corporation rather than highlighting the positives. “We provide free Wi-Fi, good lighting and 24-hour security. The time has come for the tenants to step up and help themselves. Our role is to encourage good business practices, but they cannot depend on a landlord. If not, then I recommend they speak to our business development office. “The tenants who are not paying need to reassess and listen to the BIDC’s advice to see how they can move forward . . . ,” she said. (SS)
LINTON PARTS WAYS WITH TRANSPORT AUTHORITY – In a press release today, chairman of the Transport Authority Ian Estwick announced the departure of the Director of Transport, Alex Linton.  “After 9 and a half years at the Transport Authority, Mr Linton has made a valuable contribution, and we are grateful for his time and efforts here. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.” Maria Boyce who is currently Assistant Director- Administration will be acting in the position of Director of Transport. (SS)
TRANSPORT BOARD WORKERS GET AUDIENCE WITH PM – For the second time this week, Prime Minister Mia Mottley met with workers in a bid to make the bitter pill of austerity easier to swallow as an IMF-supervised programme tightens its grip on public corporations. And workers of the cash-strapped Transport Board emerged from this morning’s five-hour audience with the premier saying the way forward did not seem so bleak. The workers are still not clear how many of the 560 staff will be retrenched, but several of the over 200 in attendance told Barbados TODAY that they now feel “less anxious” about the process Applause could be heard on several occasions as Mottley addressed the workers, union officials, Transport Board managers and directors at the Barbados Workers Union’s Solidarity House headquarters at Harmony Hall. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mottley was adamant that the gathering was not part of the negotiation process but an opportunity to present fiscal realities while hearing workers concerns and suggestions. This echoed a dawn meeting held yesterday with Sanitation Service Authority workers over the vexed issue overtime, which she declared was not a negotiation, even though apparently extracting a concession from the workers to voluntarily abandon their claims to weekend overtime pay. Of today’s meeting, the Prime Minister told journalists: “We met with workers because it is important that we understand where we both stand, how we can work together and how we can make this journey together. “This is about the third set of workers that I have met with this week, so I have made the determination that I want to go out there and hear first-hand from the people and hear what their perspectives are. “ At the same time, I need to share where we are as a Government and what we can do because the most important thing is that we are on the same page in the interest of this country” Mottley added. Barbados TODAY reported last week that with Government’s finances to the bus company to be cut at month-end and no money left to pay the current staff, concerns are mounting about the pace of negotiations with the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) over a second round of layoffs. A Transport Board source close to the talks has told Barbados TODAY that after two months of meetings, neither the union nor the state-owned bus service was budging from their respective positions. But although keen to cast herself as a hands-on Prime Minister, Mottley was adamant that today’s meeting did not trespass into the territory reserved for those at the negotiation table. “I did not come here to negotiate,” she declared.  “Those are matters for the union and the management. I came here to make sure that we hear what the workers feel, and I could share where the country is along this journey. I also wanted to cast governance in a new perspective. “The notion that prime ministers remain cloistered in offices and not hear from workers directly is not something I want to be associated with. I came to Government by rubbing shoulders and I intend to govern by continuing to rub shoulders.” Mottley also said the workers were under no illusion about the gravity of the challenges facing the Government-owned public transport service. She stressed: “Clearly we inherited a situation that was deeply challenged. About five years ago we had about 500 privately owned public service vehicles but we now have over 800 when we inherited the government. That increase came at the same time that the Transport Board’s fleet went down by more than half, and this has severely compromised the organisation in terms of its revenue and expenditure. This is but one of the things that has led to the instability of the institution.” (BT)
BWU: NO HOLD-UP ON OUR END WITH TRANSPORT BOARD – General Secretary of the Barbados Workers Union (BWU), Toni Moore, has denied reports that her union and the management of the Transport Board are at a standoff in talks on a second round of layoffs at the state-run bus company . After the workers met with the Prime Minister at the BWU’s Solidarity House headquarters, Moore said that the negotiations which began in January, have only dealt with the temporary layoff of bus drivers, as drivers significantly outnumber the bus fleet. Moore told Barbados TODAY: “Discussions continue at the level of the directors of the Transport Board and the union. It has been public knowledge that there is a concern about the number of units on the road vis-`a-vis the number of operators available. So, everyone is aware that discussions have started for a few weeks now on the issue of operators, particularly short-term layoffs. “As those discussions are ongoing, there has been a wider perspective being put out there of larger numbers that would be falling at the Transport Board. That discussion has not commenced yet.” With Government’s financial lifeline to the Transport Board to be cut at month-end and no money left to pay the current staff, concerns are mounting at Weymouth about the pace of talks with the union over a second round of layoffs. A Transport Board source close to the talks has told Barbados TODAY that after two months of meetings, neither the union nor the cash-strapped bus service was budging from their respective positions. With the financial year ending on March 31, time is running out on a deal before the corporation runs out of funding to pay the 560 workers. The source said: “We don’t have a choice but to reach an agreement by March 31 because if there is no agreement with the union, we would have to lay off the people anyway because there would be no money to pay them. You can’t have people working for you if you can’t pay them.” Moore revealed that her union was still awaiting the Transport Board’s vision for the organisation. She said that she was not ruling out the possibility of additional workers aside from the drivers being cut, though she insisted that no such determination has been made as yet. Moore said: “We are still in the stage where we are still in discussion with the board and awaiting a full presentation of the board’s vision for the Transport Board. Once we have that we will be able to go into a fuller discussion. We are not saying that other workers will not be impacted but that determination has not yet been made.” (BT)
SUSPENDED –The Arawak Cement Company has suspended its planned breathalyser testing of all 100 employees that was set to start next Friday. The company was also expected to begin random testing today. But the implementation of the testing programme has been put on hold, pending the outcome of talks between the company and the workers’ bargaining agent, the Barbados Workers Union (BWU). BWU Deputy General Secretary Dwaine Paul is contending that testing cannot begin until a number of concerns are settled to the union’s satisfaction. Paul told Barbados TODAY this afternoon that the union was not properly informed about the initiative. He said: “We were finally notified. Unfortunately, we were notified after the company had sort of implemented it. We subsequently received a letter and had a meeting on the subject of the breathalyser; and at this stage, we are to have further discussions on it. But at this stage, our members are not going to be participating in such an exercise.” He said he did not expect the company to go forward with the testing during negotiations. The BWU met yesterday with management of the cement company and the date for a follow-up meeting was currently being worked on, he said. Paul said: “We are not going ahead with [drug testing]. The union members are not participating in it.  There are a number of unanswered questions that need to be dealt with. Obviously the process was not adhered to as far as how things are normally done; and this is an issue.” Paul emphasised that while both sides have managed to work past that issue, the implementation of the testing “is a no-go for our members”. He also disclosed that the company had agreed to furnish the union with certain information regarding the drug testing. The union executive continued: “They were supposed to start this morning (random testing); and up to this morning I have received no report that there is a challenge with the position that we took going forward.” Paul also pointed out that the breathalyser testing was not even ready for implementation at the national level. “We have difficulty with the whole thing,” Paul said. “The parties are going to have discussions on it
. We can’t have discussions on it while it is being done. So our position is that we can’t participate.” The testing was to be conducted by a private security firm, but the BWU deputy general secretary said he is concerned that security guards are being exploited as all types of responsibilities are being added to their plate. In addition to the new role these guards are being required to carry out, Paul told Barbados TODAY that this same security firm has outstanding pay issues to be resolved with the union. Paul continued: “I have a significant problem with security guards in Barbados being exploited by their employers. There is no discussion with the workers or the workers’ representative in terms of how all of these additional duties will be compensated
how they impact on the actual workers or anything like that.” He said he would be reaching out to the security guards shortly when he meets with them to send a message to employers that “enough is enough”. When contacted this afternoon, new General Manager of the Arawak Cement Company Yago Castro confirmed to Barbados TODAY that the testing had been put on hold pending the outcome of talks with the BWU. Castro said: “[BWU] raised a number of things which they want us to clarify. We prefer to take it easy even though we think it’s a good thing [the testing]. We are going to take some more time to give some more feedback to the union so that everybody is comfortable.” (BT)
‘IN THE POST’: BPS REFORM – Government’s restructuring has reached the Postal Service as Home Affairs Minister Edmund Hinkson explored options with postal workers, managers and union representatives. But the Minister heard a litany of issues including staff shortages, acting positions, motorcycle loans, uniforms, and building maintenance. Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Deborah Payne and Deputy Permanent Secretary Celia Pollard-Jones joined delegations of the National Union of Public Workers and Barbados Workers’ Union. The union groups were led by NUPW Acting General Secretary Wayne Walrond and BWU Deputy General Secretary Dwaine Paul. Speaking during the meeting in the Minister’s Wildey office, Hinkson said a Cabinet paper on the reform of the BPS was being prepared, and should soon be up for consideration by ministers. He stressed there was a need for postal reform, especially at a time when people access information at the click of a button, while the  writing and posting of letters is diminishing. He was supported by Acting Deputy Postmaster General Iris Lashley, who admitted that the postal service’s significant business was now from packages rather than social letters. Declaring that there was a billion-dollar industry in packages and e-commerce, she reported that the BPS has seen an increase of between 25,000 to 100,000 packages per year. “We would like to be able to handle the increase,” Lashley said, noting that efforts were already under way to see how they could harness some potential profits. Consultants from the Universal Postal Union, the international organisation of national posts, were included in a national committee which was created to work on the reform, she said. “We are looking at postal banking as a consideration,” Lashley said, as the post office also examines a Government proposal to go cheque-less, which would have an impact on those who cash their National Insurance cheques at various branches. Acting Postmaster General Valeta Best said that over the years, the post office had ventured into other non-traditional areas, such as issuing application forms for passports and visas. The BWU’s Paul noted that it was important to make the BPS “fit for purpose”, while ensuring that the livelihoods of the postal workers were protected at the same time. He also urged the management team to consider the other issues on the table, as they were critical to the everyday operations of postal workers. Walrond of the NUPW echoed similar sentiments, noting that the union hoped to see all the outstanding issues being addressed within a reasonable timeframe. (BT)
LABEL WORRY – Barbados’ expanding trade with Latin America has started to create some headaches for the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, as that organisation is witnessing substantial breaches in standardization laws relating to labels in a foreign language. This was revealed by Acting Director at the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Bertram Johnson, who explained that the problem had become more pronounced since the latter part of 2018. “We were challenged recently with persons importing produce that are labelled in a foreign language, particularly Spanish. This seems to be an emergence resulting from businesses getting more trade out of Latin America. We are finding a lot of these products now coming with the font and different varying labelling written in Spanish,” said Johnson, who noted that dual labelling is allowed provided that the display panel showing content, origin and ingredients, is in English. He noted that this practice presented a serious danger to consumers, especially in food products, as persons may not be able to discern if the product has ingredients they may be allergic to. “Barbados is not a bilingual society and you could appreciate the danger of consuming something and not understanding the ingredients. You might have health challenges and you might be allergic to certain ingredients. If you don’t discern that ingredient early you might take that product and might have health complications,” he explained. Johnson revealed that Government has gone through great lengths to stamp out the problem, while at the same time trying not to hinder businesses from thriving. Johnson added, “in the latter part of 2018 we had a great emergence of that problem, but the department and Ministry by extension was proactive in engaging the various private sector agencies that imported products into Barbados that were carrying those infractions. We also issued a public notice in the newspapers warning persons that this practice can carry a fine and imprisonment. We don’t want to go there because we are here to facilitate commerce, but we need persons to carry out their business legally and safely.” He revealed that since their campaign, the problem has lessened but not eradicated and said more work still needs to be done to bring all agencies into conformity. “It is under control right now. I can’t say that it has been removed entirely, but each day we are seeing less of the problem. We are still picking up one or two, but we are working assiduously to bring everyone into conformity,” he stressed.  (BT)
KIDNEY FAILURE AFFLICING CHILDREN ‘AS YOUNG AS 8’ – A kidney specialist has revealed that children as young as eight are suffering from genetic kidney disease while adults in the 20-30 age group are suffering from kidney failure owing to lifestyle diseases. Consultant nephrologist Dr Nerissa Jurawan said: “In the children, it is usually a genetic disease, which means that it is something that you are born with. But what we are actually seeing now in the  age group between 20 and 30 years old, it is not genetic causes; it is
diabetes, hypertension – these chronic diseases are actually presenting an early stage of this disease.” The revelation comes as peritoneal dialysis patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital are to utilise the latest cutting-edge technology with the ‘Home Help Claria’ machine from next week. The $18,000 machine allows carers to be able to track their patients online and to treat any sudden changes with their kidney function. Peritoneal dialysis is a form of dialysis in which the lining of the abdomen, the peritoneum acts as the membrane through which fluid and dissolved substances are exchanged with the blood. As in kidney dialysis, it is used to remove excess fluid, correct electrolyte imbalances, and remove toxins in patients with kidney failure. Speaking to the media as Barbados joined in marking World Kidney Day, Peritoneal Dialysis Coordinator at the QEH, Marselles Sealy, said the machine would allow health care professionals to track and diagnose any sudden changes in their patients as the new machine has an online feature. Sealy said: “The difference in the machine is that we can monitor the patients online. So we can go online it is programmed in the computer and we can monitor the patients through that. It is an upgraded technology from the one that we had. We can go on the computer and pick the patients up and see if they are having problems any issues and we can correct them from our computer.” Sealy said it is important that Barbadians take care of their kidneys as dialysis for kidney failure costs Government $52,000 a year per patient. The new unit has 100 patients obtaining treatment. The dialysis coordinator said: “It is very important so many persons now suffer from hypertension and diabetes and these are the main causes of renal disease. It is important that persons look after themselves, monitor themselves properly and keep up with their doctor visits, keep up with their medication so they would not go to the stage where they have kidney failure.” Among Sealy’s tips for kidney care were: “Drink your water, exercise, take the medication that is prescribed to them, keep up with their appointments. Ask your doctor to do a renal test for you to make sure that they are not suffering or are in the beginning stages of kidney failure.” Jurawan said the Home Help Claria would assist the Queen Elizabeth Hospital to maintain its high standards for peritoneal care as it is ranked as one of the best in the Caribbean. Jurawan said: “It is going to be very useful especially to us in the health care profession looking after our patients but the patients as well. A lot of the times the peritoneal dialysis is a home treatment and a lot of patients have been anxious about doing a treatment away from the hospital. I think this will go a long way with helping us improving our system.”  (BT)
CADOGAN ‘RELOCATED FOR MEDICAL CARE’ – Hazel Cadogan – the elderly woman at the centre of a feud with her son that went viral on social media – is now undergoing a health checkup, a senior Elder Affairs official disclosed today. Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Neil Rowe, said Cadogan has been relocated from her Pine public housing home to an undisclosed medical care facility following his intervention. Rowe gave Barbados TODAY an update on the 66-year-old Princess Royal Avenue resident who claimed that she was being abused by her  son and his partner and forced to beg from her front door. Rowe said the elderly woman is receiving quality medical care and he has seen a change in her behaviour. “She is comfortable, and she is doing pretty good so far and right now she is going through an assessment and the doctors are looking after her at the present moment. Her behavior today was completely different to yesterday as she is more relaxed and she feels a lot better now because she is in a different environment, “ he told Barbados TODAY. Rowe said an assessment revealed that she is suffering from poor circulation. He said: “We are just trying to get her son to hand over the medication she has at home to the doctors so they can examine what she has been taking before.” On her allegation reported yesterday by Barbados TODAY that she was being forced from her home, Rowe, MP for St Michael North West, said that due to the sensitivity of the matter it would have to be handled by “higher-level officials”. But he said they were proceeding with caution on whether she should return to home after her medical assessment is completed. “It is a very sensitive matter and we do not want her to return to the home if she is actually being abused, we don’t want that. We will try to get to the Government on the situation to see how best we can resolve it so that she could return home and have a peace of mind and be comfortable. “She is in good hands and the doctors that are looking and everything that needs to be done will be done. She does need assistance from various people, but the problem is she stated yesterday that there certain things that she cannot consume. In the case of that it is best for a dietician or nutritionist to decide what she is allowed to take.” Rowe said. (BT)
BLOCK’ PROGRAMME SET TO HIT THE STREETS – In a matter of days, Government will begin to reconstruct negatively perceived street corners, known as blocks, as its highly touted ‘Building Blocks’ programme begins. Minister of Youth and Constituency Empowerment Adrian Forde told reporters that as the voices of hundreds of neglected youth were being ignored, they were being pushed toward ‘block culture’. He added that 30 per cent of youth between the age of 18 and 35 are currently unemployed leaving them desperately in need of the “tools of empowerment”. After nine months of planning, Government intends to launch the first phase of the three-million dollar programme at the Bonnets Community Centre in Brittons Hill. Forde said: “They say it takes nine months to get a baby, so we in the ministry are proud parents, because the birth of the project will start next week Monday. “Those non-idyllic structures that some community members fear to traverse in their daily routines, we are going to make into idyllic business centres.” The minister was speaking to the media at the Courtyard Marriott in Hastings after an awards ceremony for another youth initiative, the Get Into Hospitality event. Forde said ministry officials visited every “nook and cranny” to speak with young people on the blocks. He revealed that 70 per cent of youth who lime on blocks want to be entrepreneurs. The youth minister said he visited at least one block in all 30 constituencies and was hoping to produce ‘block-preneurs’- a term which he uses to describe youth who set up businesses on the block. He said: “They want to have their own businesses. They want to have a tangible stake in what happens in this country and so we as a government recognise that the moral test is how we treat to our most vulnerable. “What we said is that we want to hear what our young people want to do. So we collected all of the data and decided to commission action based on the information collected.” The initiative is being rolled out in the midst of a particularly violent year in which over a dozen mostly young people were murdered in the first two months. Less than a week ago, Forde addressed the opening of the Chesterfield Brewster Youth Empowerment Center in Silver Hill Christ Church, which is to be used as a place of recreation, sport, training and entrepreneurship. For this most recent project, the ministry has collaborated with the Ministry of Housing and Lands and Town and Country Development Planning Office. Youth are to gain skills in business, entrepreneurship, bookkeeping, barbering and agriculture as viable alternatives to crime, the minister said, adding: “As much as we put laws in place and beg the young people to put down those destructive weapons, we have to provide alternatives, because the question they will ask is: ‘when I put down those guns, stop robbing or selling drugs, what will be the alternative? “Gone are the days when Government is going to take three million dollars and spend catering for a summer camp programme. The Prime Minister is saying that she is going to take this same three million dollars and build up our young people and provide a safe and productive space for them.”  (BT)
MUSLIMS JOLTED BY NEW ZEALAND TERROR ATTACK – The Muslim community, usually in prayerful reflection on Friday, was reeling from the horrific, white supremacy terror attack on two mosques in New Zealand which killed 49 people and critically injured at least a dozen more. This nation’s 3,000 Muslims woke up to the  news as they prepared to engage in Friday prayers at the five mosques here. As many as 41 worshippers were killed when a gunman stormed the Al-Noor mosque during weekly prayers Christchurch. The killer apparently drove to another mosque in Linwood, in the east of the city and killed seven more. Secretary of the Barbados Muslim Association, Suleiman Bulbulia, said members of the local community were “shocked” and “saddened” by the gun attacks. At the Jama Masjid in the community of Kensington, St Michael, Imam Aakil Bhula encouraged members of the congregation to pray for the victims of the tragedy and their families. He also called for patience and encouraged worshippers to pray for their own safety and the safety of Barbados. Bulbulia said Muslims were “extremely concerned” about the senseless act of violence, but were even more worried about an emerging wave of intolerance for religious and ethnic minorities worldwide. He added that he did not expect such extreme terrorism would affect Barbados, but admitted he would not have expected it to occur in New Zealand. Bulbulia said he spoke to the charge d‘affairs of the New Zealand High Commission here, as both noted that “New Zealand has not witnessed anything like this in history”. He added: “This tragedy is another one in a line of similar acts of violence by individuals who have no regard for life, places of worship or humanity. We saw it in a synagogue over a year ago, we saw it in churches and you’re seeing it now in a mosque.” Of the brazen shooter, Bulbulia said: “This place of peace and worship is eroded in their eyes and so the new concern overall is about where society is headed when people can do this so brazenly. International media reports reported that Australian Brenton Tarran, 28, the main suspect in the mosque shooting appeared in court on a single murder charge and was remanded until April 5. The gunman, who live-streamed the attack from a head-mounted camera, identifying himself in the footage, was seen shooting at men, women and children at the Al Moor mosque. He then drove about 5 kilometres to another mosque in the suburb of Linwood where he conducted a second shooting. Social media accounts in Tarran’s name were also reportedly used to post a lengthy, racist document in which the author identified the mosques that were later attacked. Bulbulia said: “From what I am reading, individuals like him are driven by a mentality of white supremacy and they look at persons that are not fitting into a certain portfolio of either race, creed or appearance and they view such people as outsiders. “So I guess they are driven to decide that these people are not for us and so they must be against us.” But Bulbulia was also critical of Australian Senator Fraser Anning, who blamed the violent attack on Muslim immigration. “I think that rhetoric is found in many places in Europe and North America as well and it is unfortunate when politicians get involved in that type of rhetoric,” the Muslim community spokesman said. But he expressed happiness that such deadly ideologies were not in the majority. “I am very heartened that across the divide and the religious spectrum people recognise that an attack on one place of worship is an attack on all places of worship,” he said. “An attack on people in prayer in a mosque is similar to an attack on people in prayer in a synagogue or church.” He also said among those sending messages of comfort were Christian leaders. One message read: “[The terrorist attack] is more than tragic, it’s barbaric. It is inhumane. I just saw the video and I am stunned by the viciousness. My sympathy to the community.” Bulbulia added: “Barbados has always been a tolerant, law abiding society where people enjoy freedom of worship without hindrance and I hope that it can be maintained forever. “We hope that kind of misguidance doesn’t get root here in our country where we see people as outsiders or foreigners as we are all of Barbadian background or heritage, if not by descent, at least by being a citizen of this country, because we all look out for the development of Barbados.” (BT)
‘STEP UP – The days of prosecutions being discontinued in court owing to absent files – some outstanding as far back as eight years – must come to an end, the nation’s crime chief has told police officers. “This is an undesirable state of affairs which does not bode well for professionalism and efficiency, and indeed, quality service,” Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Crime Eucklyn Thompson told detectives. “This shortcoming must be rectified with immediacy.” He said investigators complimenting field work with the requisite case files was significant to the advancement of cases in the law courts. Thompson was delivering the featured address at a course in basic criminal investigation at the Regional Police Training Centre at Seawell. Speaking on the changing dynamics of crime and investigation, he said forces in the region must pride themselves on total quality service devoid of corrupt methods and practices. He said that as today’s detectives battle with organised crime, transnational crime, computer enabling crime in the world of cyber technology and the influx of firearms through ports of entry and courier services, the fight is not for the faint-hearted. Assistant Commissioner Thompson said to the participants: “Just turning up for duty will not suffice. Your police high command will be expecting a more  keenly, enthusiastic, committed, and skillful officer who, in the scheme of things, will be multi-skilled in nature, and capable of bringing relevant and pertinent ideas to enhance discussions, strategy and work performance. “The practitioners of crime who might not always be the men on the street, in an effort to remain relevant, viable and improve productivity, are always exploring the latest in technology and other competitive strategies, including networking with persons of similar ilk to outfit and out-think law enforcement in order to stay in the business.” The two-week training course drew 28 participants from the police forces of Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda and Belize, and the Barbados Defence Force. Detectives were trained on the role and qualities of a detective including deportment, house-to-house inquiries, computer technology as an aid to investigation, interviewing techniques, and crime scene management. Barbadian officers Police Constable 1968 Gregory Parris and PC 2215 Nellon Collymore tied at the top of the class with both receiving 80 per cent in the course. (BT)
POLICE PROBING DEATH OF A TEENAGER – Police are currently on the scene of an unnatural death in Eden Lodge St Michael. NATION NEWS understands the victim is a male teenager.  (More details as they come to hand). (SS)
CHANDLER RELEASED ON BAIL – The man who was shot by police while trying to escape last month, was released on bail today. Gary O’Brian Chandler, pleaded not guilty to entering Norma Howell’s house as a trespasser and stealing a pair of $150 shoes belonging to Dwain Collymore on February 7. He however was not required to plead to wounding Constable Rommel Downes with intent to prevent his lawful arrest.  When he reappeared before Magistrate Douglas Frederick in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court this morning, he explained to the court that he would be better off on the outside to get treatment as he had missed two appointments at the hospital since being on remand.  “My hand getting black and the pins coming out,” he said referring to the metal contraption secured to his left hand. He was released on $3 000 bail with a surety and ordered to return to court on August 12. “Learn not to tell lies,” the magistrate told him as he exited the dock.  (SS)
LIAR GETS BAIL – Parish Land, Christ Church, resident Gary O’Brian Chanlder has been advised to stop telling lies after he issued an apology to a Bridgetown magistrate today. The 25-year-old appeared before Magistrate Douglas Frederick last month charged with unlawfully wounding Constable Rommel Downes on February 7 and entering Norma Howell’s house as a trespasser and making off with a $150 pair of shoes. He was not required to plead to the first charge and he denied the second one. At that time Chandler, who has a piece of steel protruding from the top of his left arm almost down to the elbow, with the arm heavily bandaged and in a sling, told the magistrate that he was shot and had to go to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment. In that bail application, he also said he should be allowed to go home as “my grandmother on she dying bed and I don’t want to put her through that”. However, it was later proved by his sibling that he was not being truthful about his grandmother’s health. “I am totally sorry about that Sir,” Chandler told Frederick today adding, “I asking for bail under any and all conditions. I get to reflect about that in prison . . . the hand turning dark and still swell.” Frederick then explained that he was willing to grant him bail on his first appearance due to his condition “but you told so many lies and your sister came and put a spoke in your wheel”. The accused will reappear in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on August 12 after he was granted $3,000 bail with one surety. “Learn not to tell lies,” Frederick told Chandler as he walked out of the dock. LAWLESS LYNCH –The continued lawlessness among the nation’s youth must not be tolerated! This was declared today by Bridgetown Magistrate Douglas Frederick, as he remanded an 18-year-old man who endangered the lives of scores of passengers aboard a bus, when he threw a rock through its window. On Wednesday afternoon, minibus B40 was on route to Bridgetown from Speightstown when it stopped along Black Rock Main Road, St Michael, in the area of Kentucky to pick up school children. Prosecutor Sergeant St Clair Phillips told the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court that the driver was about to move off when he heard a crash. He went to investigate and discovered the glass on the right of the bus was shattered. Additionally, a 14-year-old girl was wounded on the right side of her body, an 11-year-old girl received lacerations to her right hand and foot and a 17-year-old female’s shoulder was swollen. They were taken for medical attention, treated and released while the minibus driver reported the matter. The accused, Jadon Junior Lynch, of Connell Road, Free Hill, St Michael, was subsequently detained and admitted to police that he “wanted to burst that boy Chong’s face but the rock went through the bus”. Speaking to the magistrate from the dock this morning the teenager who pleaded guilty to four charges, further admitted that he was neither working nor in school. “You are just doing lawlessness!” Frederick told the teen to which he replied: “I am sorry for what happened”. The apology fell on deaf ears after Lynch explained that he was having some problems with Chong and “just lost it” that day. “Sorry? You are just doing a lot of lawlessness, that’s what you are doing. Not going to school, not working, you are just pelting out rocks to injure innocent people. “You almost kill these people!” the magistrate further stated, before he called Lynch’s mother to the stand telling her “he has one foot in jail even if he is a first-timer. He started at the top of the scale”. On questioning the teen further, it was revealed that Lynch left school without a certificate and was using marijuana. “I keep talking to him, talking to him, telling him to keep off the road,” the mother told the court. She then told the magistrate “do what you have to do,” after he informed her that her son would be remanded. “This is a foolish act, it could have cost somebody [their] life. You know the minibus got people that innocent in it, just there sitting down. I could have been sitting in that bus or you, but he has no regard for them and this is how serious this is. You cannot do that because innocent bystanders will get hurt. I don’t know what he and Chong have against one another, I do not know . . . [but] that is how the shootings start and how the killings start and innocent people lose their lives,” the irate magistrate contended. “I keep telling him that,” the boy’s mother admitted. Frederick then responded: “You kept telling him so he ain’t listening, so he going to feel today”. He then ordered a presentencing report into the teen’s life and remanded him to Dodds until April 12. (BT)
MARTYR GOES TO JAIL – One month in prison. That’s how long Marlon Terry Martyr, of September Square, St Matthias, Christ Church will spend at HMP Dodds after he failed to compensate Janet Thompson $800 for damaging her cellular phone on Valentines Day. Magistrate Douglas Frederick told the 32-year-old technician on his last court appearance that he needed to pay the amount in full by today or spend a month in prison. However, when he appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court this morning he informed the magistrate that he had no money. The matter was set-aside for a couple of hours and Martyr returned and told Frederick that he was able to borrow $200. Thompson who had previously informed the court that she conducted business from the phone and was losing revenue daily was not amused. “From the onset, you said to bring the money, [and] he ain’t do it so send him up,” the woman stated. But the legal tussle between the two does not end there as 49-year-old Thompson, of Collins Road, St Peter is also charged with assaulting Martyr on February 15. She remains on $1,000 bail and the case against her will continue on April 4.  (BT)
SHOWDOWN – The state enterprise that manages cricket’s famed Mecca and the Barbados Workers Union appears headed for a showdown over pending layoffs as the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) programme continues to bite into public sector jobs. BWU Deputy General Secretary Dwaine Paul declared dissatisfaction with a lack of consultation on plans by Kensington Oval Management Incorporated (KOMI) to send home an undisclosed number of staff under BERT. But the cricket stadium’s chief executive has denied there was even enough of a newsworthy discussion on the job cuts. Paul told Barbados TODAY: “The union and Kensington Oval is headed for a dispute over the company’s move to effect redundancies at Kensington without following the process that was agreed to by the Government of Barbados and the Social Partnership for redundancies in the statutory corporations. This is foolishness that people are not doing what they are supposed to do time and time again.” He continued: “We keep saying all the time that we need to follow the process
and we received communication from Kensington that they want to do redundancies and [still] the process has not been observed. So you would expect that there would be a dispute between the Barbados Workers’ Union and Kensington over their move to start redundancies without having any care for the process.” Asked how many workers were expected to be displaced, Paul said the numbers were not the issue. “[KOMI] have not done what they are supposed to do,” Paul said. “So we are going to have a problem with it. You can’t continue to say you are going to follow the process
and these chief executive officers and board members are doing what they want to do; which is contrary to the agreement that the process must be followed. “You can’t write me and give me a day’s notice for a meeting to talk about redundancies that you already want to effect. That is madness. We had this problem last year when the process started, now we still have it again this year. People are doing as they like, and the Government needs to deal with these people who are not following the process
because we are not going to put up with it.” But KOMI Chief Executive Officer Ben Toppin said he was not aware of any pending dispute with the BWU. Toppin told Barbados TODAY: “I don’t know of any issue with any union and any process. You are ahead of me; I can’t speak to that. Is there a problem
you’re telling me? When they [union] come back to us with any procedural issues, we will deal with it. “I am not saying that the union has not been approached about some plans, but I don’t know what the issue is exactly.” He also suggested to Barbados TODAY that there was no news story in “what little” has been discussed with the union:  “What has transpired so far is between us and the union. “As far as I know there is no story. I personally have had no discussion with anybody from the union. So I am not sure what the problem is and what the big story is.” (BT)
SPORTS TURN – Put down the gun and pick up a ball. Co-operators General Insurance general manager Anton Lovell believes sports can be used to combat the recent spike in crime by engaging young people in positive activity. Lovell expressed the sentiment this week while addressing local basketball’s opening ceremony following last week’s latest shooting. “These days we hear a lot about serious crimes and gun violence amongst the youth, yet I’ve heard no one put forward as one of the solutions the need to pay greater attention for emphasis and provide more funding into sports programmes, which will provide avenues for the youth to be positively engaged,” Lovell said. (SS)
PRIDE SECOND THANKS TO GAMBLE- An extraordinary gamble by Leeward Islands Hurricanes backfired spectacularly, leaving them with a stunning innings and 18-run defeat to Barbados Pride inside two days of their rescheduled fourth round match in the Regional Four-Day Championship yesterday. Trailing by 101 runs on first innings after Pride declared on 191 for eight, Hurricanes appeared to be stringing together a solid reply on 83 for two in their second innings – still behind by 18 runs. But in a bizarre twist, the hosts declared their innings 38 minutes after lunch, believing they were ahead of Barbados in the overall points standings. In fact, Hurricanes were actually behind by 0.20 behind – on 134 versus Pride’s 134.2. It meant that Hurricanes, who entered the contest in second place in the standings and still with an outside chance of overtaking eventual champions, Guyana Jaguars, will now end the championship in a disappointing third place with Barbados picking up second for the fifth straight season.  (SS)
GLORY TO HC BOYS, FOUNDATION GIRLS – To the chants of Kolij, Kolij, Harrison College boys joined Christ Church Foundation girls in sharing the Sol Esther Maynard Zone track and field glory yesterday at the National Stadium. Harrison College denied Christ Church Foundation a second straight double crown in the zone by narrowly capturing the boys’ title by an eight-point margin. But Foundation’s capture of a third consecutive girls’ zonal title in the PowerAde Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Championships (BSSAC) was by a massive 203 points as they amassed 468.50 to HC’s 265.50. The boys’ battle came down to the final event – the 4x400 relay – with HC leading Foundation by ten points. Foundation’s quartet of Shane Thorne, Jade Yearwood, Raheim Taitt-Best and Dalano Wickham emphatically won in a zone record 3:15.54 minutes. But Harrison College (3:19.39) ensured the boys’ title would be theirs by finishing second as Rasheeme Griffith chased fellow CARIFTA Games’ 400 hurdles qualifier Wickham, who had a 15-metre lead, in vain on the anchor leg. CROP OVER OVERHAUL – Crop Over is to undergo an overhaul, with cost-cutting measures and improvements to benefit artistes and interest groups involved in the nation’s biggest arts and cultural festival. Speaking at a reception for festival sponsors, recently appointed chief executive of the National Cultural Foundation (NCF), Carol Roberts-Reifer, revealed that the three-month festival was in for major changes. The Pic-O-De-Crop competition, the Party Monarch/Sweet Soca Monarch and the Junior Monarch competitions as well as the weekend of pan are all in line for sweeping changes, she indicated.  Citing poor attendance, the NCF has scrapped the semifinal phase of the Pic-O-De-Crop calypso competition, Roberts-Reifer disclosed. Calypsonians are to be selected solely by their performance on judging night at the tents. The finals, which will be held on Friday, August 2 at Kensington Oval will include 18 finalists. In another dramatic announcement, she said that the contestants will only sing one song, but will have the opportunity to change their choice for finals night. Roberts-Reifer said: “If you want to change your song when you get to the finals and sing the second song that you had in the tent, you can do that
If you wanted to bring a brand new song . . . you can do that. You decide the songs you are going to be judged with.” The NCF boss said that since 2017, the numbers of attendees at the Pic-O-De-Crop  contest have been extremely disappointing, with last year’s finals drawing less than 4,000 patrons and fewer than 900 going to the semifinals. The winner of the Pic-O-De-Crop competition can also choose if to keep his 2019 Nissan X-Trail SUV sponsored by McEnearney Quality Inc (MQI) or receive $100,000 in cash. She said the goal was to make “this competition exciting for the calypsonians, for the sponsors and the patrons.” But one of the most jaw-dropping disclosures for Soca and party music fans was the dropping of the Soca Royale Party Monarch competition and Sweet Soca competition. Sweet soca and party monarch artistes are to vie for the title of king or queen in a new Soca Monarch competition, Roberts-Reifer said. The sweet soca and party monarch semi-finals which were held on the same night as the International Bashment Soca competition has been rebranded the Soca Royale Semi-Finals, to be held on July 5 at Kensington Oval. Roberts-Reifer declared that both genres of up-tempo music will be battling it out for the coveted prize of  “best soca song of the year”. With the diverse genres, there is to be no restriction on the beats per minute (BPM) tempo, she added. After nearly a decade at Bushy Park, St Philip, the competition will also have a new place to call home – the National Botanical Gardens at Waterford, across the road from the National Stadium. The NCF CEO continued: “For years we have been hearing issues with the BPM, issues with the quality of one set or songs and why don’t we go back to one competition. Again we looked at the numbers and we thought you know what let us take this leap of faith and go back to one competition.” She also revealed that the winner of the Soca Monarch competition will receive a Mazda BT-50 pickup truck from MQI. Also on the list of major changes is the revamping of the Junior Monarch competition. The competition is to be coordinated by the nation’s primary and secondary schools, she said. She disclosed that it will be an individual and school effort with the calypsonians and the schools winning prizes. Past monarchs are also to mentor their alumni. Roberts-Reifer stated that the change was driven by the large numbers of children who were interested in music but unable to gauge their abilities. “In schools across the country there are children sitting down every day who like music but they are being forced to excel academically,” she indicated. The NCF CEO also declared that the concept of the Mega Cavalcades is to be revisited. The all-day family fun event has been named Bajarama and is to be held at six different venues across the island. The weekend of pan has been extended for three days with a Pan Yard Lime on July 12, Fusion (formerly Pan Fusion) on July 13 and Pan Pun De Sand on July 14. For the first time, Pan Pun De Sand is to be moved to Pirates Cove hotel with an entrance fee of $20 for adults. The layout for Bridgetown Market is also to be reconfigured, according to the NCF chief. In a speech, Minister of Information, Broadcasting and Public Affairs, Senator Lucille Moe told the gathering of sponsors that the changes to the Crop Over Festival were crucial owing to intense competition from other carnivals in the region. She added that Barbados was being pressured to be innovative in its product as the economy was significantly boosted by the festival. Senator Moe said: “The Crop Over Festival is the largest showcase of the best of Barbados. It is the collaboration of many ideas and many genres of culture and it is to the economic good of this country. Every single sector of Barbados society is involved in the Crop Over Festival
it really does bring everybody together.” (BT)

First Trailer for 'The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One' Movie
An intriguing trailer has launched for a new sci-fi movie series titled The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One (or, vice versa, as Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child) from Australian filmmaker Shane Abbess. Described as an "adrenaline-fueled sci fi adventure", the story takes place in the future in a time of interplanetary colonization, about a father who has to rescue a young woman amidst a global crisis. The full cast includes Kellan Lutz, Daniel MacPherson, Isabel Lucas, Luke Ford, Rachel Griffiths, Temuera Morrison, Bren Foster, Dwaine Stevenson, and Teagan Croft. As much as I was expecting this to look cheesy or too low budget, it actually looks pretty damn good, with some impressive visual effects and an interesting story. I don't know if the movie is any good, but I'm very curious about checking this out. â€șâ€șâ€ș

Gabriel, if you are reading this, then I have failed. We are far from grace, further than I could ever imagine. You will feel things that will cloud your judgement. This enemy within is strong and unpredictable. Control these emotions or the fight cannot be won. The others have failed, learn from them but do not follow. You are the last.
