#Electra was my other other best girl

in middle school during my Intense Greek Mythology Phase, Artemis was, as you can likely guess, my best girl. Iphigenia was my OTHER best girl. Yes at the same time.

The story of Iphigenia always gets to me when it's not presented as a story of Artemis being capricious and having arbitrary rules about where you can and can't hunt, but instead, making a point about war.

Artemis was, among other things--patron of hunting, wild places, the moon, singlehood--the protector of young girls. That's a really important aspect she was worshipped as: she protected girls and young women. But she was the one who demanded Agamemnon sacrifice his daughter in order for his fleet to be able to sail on for Troy.

There's no contradiction, though, when it's framed as, Artemis making Agamemnon face what he’s doing to the women and children of Troy. His children are not in danger. His son will not be thrown off the ramparts, his daughters will not be taken captive as sex slaves and dragged off to foreign lands, his wife will not have to watch her husband and brothers and children killed. Yet this is what he’s sailing off to Troy to inevitably do. That’s what happens in war. He’s going to go kill other people’s daughters; can he stand to do that to his own? As long as the answer is no—he can kill other people’s children, but not his own—he can’t sail off to war.

Which casts Artemis is a fascinating light, compared to the other gods of the Trojan War. The Trojan War is really a squabble of pride and insults within the Olympian family; Eris decided to cause problems on purpose, leaving Aphrodite smug and Hera and Athena snubbed, and all of this was kinda Zeus’s fault in the first place for not being able to keep it in his pants. And out of this fight mortal men were their game pieces and mortal cities their prizes in restoring their pride. And if hundreds of people die and hundred more lives are ruined, well, that’s what happens when gods fight. Mortals pay the price for gods’ whims and the gods move on in time and the mortals don’t and that’s how it is.

And women especially—Zeus wanted Leda, so he took her. Paris wanted Helen, so he took her. There’s a reason “the Trojan women” even since ancient times were the emblems of victims of a war they never wanted, never asked for, and never had a say in choosing, but was brought down on their heads anyway.

Artemis, in the way of gods, is still acting through human proxies. But it seems notable to me to cast her as the one god to look at the destruction the war is about to wreak on people, and challenge Agamemnon: are you ready to kill innocents? Kill children? Destroy families, leave grieving wives and mothers? Are you? Prove it.

It reminds me of that idea about nuclear codes, the concept of implanting the key in the heart of one of the Oval Office staffers who holds the briefcase, so the president would have to stab a man with a knife to get the key to launch the nukes. “That’s horrible!,” it’s said the response was. “If he had to do that, he might never press the button!” And it’s interesting to see Artemis offering Agamemnon the same choice. You want to burn Troy? Kill your own daughter first. Show me you understand what it means that you’re about to do.

TIME - ELO: my mum's favourite album that i first Properly listened to when i was 13. it's just the best sci-fi concept album ever....i love you jeff!!

13 Tales of Love & Revenge - The Pierces: sexy indie duo, most known for the song Secret, which isn't even in the top 5 of the best songs of the album. a treasure from when i was 11, and just figuring out i like girls.

Greatest Hits - The Eagles: again, my mum's interests becoming my own. it was really hard to pick between this and Long Road Out of Eden, but ultimately the greatest hits r that for a reason.

Laurel Hell - Mitski: my fave mitski album, heat lightning is underappreciated!!! and yeah just. its about solitude. recognition but not in the way you wanted or expected. emotional rollercoaster. im not eloquent enough to describe it and mitski does it better in under 2 minutes anyway.

Strange Trails - Lord Huron: again another hard toss between this and long lost but st wins out purely bc the transitions rule, and meet me in the woods + the yawning grave make me crazyyyy. so happy i got to hear those live in jan. lord huron is like what if a cowboy was also a ghost. thats the only way i can describe it.

Electra Heart - Marina and the Diamonds: i am not immune to music i heard at 12 years old. shame she's never made anything as good as this again.

Are We Having Fun Yet? - Black/Colin Vearncombe: another one of mum's. She found this guy when someone at Sanity was playing the album over the store speakers. loved it ever since, and introduced it to me. wistful ballads, jazzy touches, a little bit sexy.

Coyote Stories - The Crane Wives: this was a 2016-18 discovery maybe? i just know i was in school. im into folk indie i cant help it.

Wasteland, Baby! - Hozier: shout out to afro-elf for posting about movement n the whole ep, which is what spurred me to actually try this dude's music. and now i love him. but wasteland baby is immaculate: no skips, he roars in some songs and is as gentle as drizzle in others.

Rating Rune Factory Wedding Dresses (Because I have some opinions)

I honestly think this dress is top tier in terms of design. The snowy white with pops of color, the scalloped flowy sleeves, the barely exposed shoulders, that lovely subtle headdress and veil, it's all so pretty and elegant to me. I believe it suits all the girls in RF1 beautifully, though I do feel like Tabatha (center) and Rosetta (right) are standouts~

It's a very lovely design overall though I do think it creates a bit of an odd silhouette. There are still many elements to appreciate, like the lacey detailed edges and the bold but uncommon use of green. I also give them bonus points for containing a dress sprite of he/him character Ray (right) in the game's data (Trans RF character confirmed?) I think the dress best suits curvier girls like Yue (left) but it's also a real treat to finally see Dorothy's (center) lovely eyes~

Rune Factory Frontier

This dress really doesn't do it for me. I can tell they were going for more of a ceremonial robes vibe rather than a traditional wedding dress and from a distance it almost works but the outfit up close is just bulky and unflattering. Maybe if they fixed the headdress or gave the robe some really pretty accents or beading it could work, but as it is, it's probably the last thing I'd wanna be virtually married in. The one thing I do like is that it gives most of the girls a unique updo for their wedding day.

Rune Factory 3/RF3 Special

This used to be my least favorite RF wedding dress before that honor went to Frontier. The more I look at it, the more I realize that most of my disdain lies with the headdress and not the dress itself. The actual dress is fine, in fact there are some parts I really like, the sheer material on the upper arms for one, or the shawl, I just don't think it particularly looks like a wedding dress. That headdress though...oh boy, it looks like someone just glued a bunch of random sh*t they found to a headband and called it a day. It's just very cluttered and doesn't scream 'wedding' at all. If I have to pick a stand out it would probably be Raven (center) since her pose and hair color hide many of the design fails. Also Daria (right) because it seems like the sort of chaotic outfit she, herself would design.

This game didn't get the usual character portraits so the images aren't great, but my opinion on these dresses was very so-so, I definitely wouldn't call them ugly, and I do love the colors and rare use of a real bouquet, they just didn't seem to stand out all that much. Especially in terms of RF costumes. They seem a little bulky on the models but I honestly think they could have fixed that by just having character portraits. Not bad. Not great. Just middle of the road dresses. As standouts I'd pick Sonja and Electra (left and center). Their hair colors complement the dress and Electra is already suited to the poofy ballgown look anyway.

Rune Factory 4/RF4 Special

RF4's dress has a very ethereal, almost fairy-like look to it, which I personally find very gorgeous. It's pretty busy like many of the previous dresses, but unlike those, I feel like the elements here actually work together. The long flowy veil and blue rose accents are just beautiful, as is the detailed corset and neckpiece making up the torso. I'm not personally a huge fan of the flower petal looking design on the hips, but it does fit well with the whole aesthetic. As for standouts, It looks tailor made for Frey (left), but I definitely think taller, long haired girls like Dolce and Margaret (center and right) look amazing in it as well.

I think this dress is beautiful as a whole, a bit more traditional and subdued than previous wedding outfits but personally I love it. The silhouette is flattering on everyone and the color scheme is unique among the other dresses by sticking with only warmer colors as opposed to the cool blues and greens of past games. I also love how the tint of the roses changes slightly depending on who's wearing the dress. All in all it reminds me a lot of the subtle elegance of RF1's dress and that makes it a win for me. For standouts I think Fukka's (center) complexion and hair go beautifully with the dresses colors. Ludmilla (right) also looks divine with the rosy aesthetic~

I rly want to understand the coquette subculture. It seems neat! but I'm so confused. I thought I got it, but the more I look into it, the less coherency I see (at least, in a way I understand). I don't see any consistent color palettes, textiles, topics, ideology, makeup, hairstyles, music, community language or signals. I can see ballgowns & lace w/ glitter & then tshirts and flannels in a dingy laundromat. I've seen people recommend Little Women & American Psycho in the same breath w/ no further elaboration. Celebrities w/ completely separate style influences are often grouped together. I see a lot of idealization of wealthy femininity ("old money", luxury brands, mostly rich celebrities, preppy vibes, heavy amounts of skincare/selfcare/"wellness" routines which cost $$$$) but also lots of depictions life's struggle w mental illness, substance abuse, & others things commonly associated w poverty & lack of class/femininity (Cigarettes, sweatshirts, the aforementioned laundromat, not eating, pills, speculating about Anya Taylor Joy's coping mechanisms??). What is it that unifies y'all? What is it that I'm missing? I feel so lost & I want to figure it out :/

this is a great question and I can totally understand your confusion! the way I see coquette/faunlet is more of an attitude than a specific style/aesthetic but I still call it an aesthetic if that makes any sense. it's about reclaiming your own girlhood in whatever way that looks to you, we all look and dress differently but have the same sorta energy that connects us as a community.

it all began with nymphet, which was all about classic americana, lolita, lana del rey, gingham, coca cola, diners, priscilla presley etc. but the tag got censored by tumblr because many kink blogs were infiltrating this innocent subculture with sexual material. in this era girls were feeling connected to dolores haze from lolita through their own experiences and related to her as a tragic figure.

the community was revived many times but the current home of the community is with @coquette-club which was created by @lovesickbrat and also used by @bbabyyy ♡ there is a lot more to our history that I'm missing out on but if you look on my blog you will find more explanations.

there are many subtypes of coquette which is why you see so many conflicting aesthetics within the tag, from coquette noir (which is like an expression of French new wave film stars, 1920s aesthetics, Betty boop, mainly black outfits etc.) to bubblegum coquette (all things pink and girly, electra heart era marina and the diamonds, barbie etc.) and many coquettes on here either fit into these substyles or blend some together to make their own personal style!

the old money aesthetic is popular but controversial due to its implications, and I'm personally more into the thrifty side of coquette, and using pieces that I've had for years in my looks.

as a community we usually try to distance ourselves from the pro-ed/pro-ana communities as they can be harmful to our vulnerable members, since they promote eds and make them look glamorous which is something we don't want associated with our subculture.

I hope this answers your question - in short, coquette is about being authentic to yourself, reclaiming girlhood, community and sisterhood, incorporating your own aesthetics and interests (e.g. horror coquette) and expression ♡ if you have any more questions I'll try my best to answer them!

Thomas spoils his kittens absolutely rotten, he dotes on them and adores them so so much

Skimbleshanks and Jenny visit Madam's home for the first time, and Madam just looks between Skimble, Thomas, and Toulouse, and has to remind herself that she knows the cat who was Toulouse' father, so there's no way Thomas is his father, but it's so uncanny how alike they looke

Thomas also bonds really quickly with Electra and Etcetera. They weren't born when he left, so finding out he has more baby sisters makes him absolutely elated. The girls also adore their big brother, and trail after him like little shadows

the first time Macavity attacks after Thomas comes home... ohhhhhh boy

because Macavity doesn't know that Thomas is back, so when he attacks and (as usual) goes for Demeter, and is stopped by an orange blur that attacks with a ferocity none of the other Jellicles fight with, he's taken aback until he realizes it's Thomas, and has the biggest "oh i fucked up" realization of his life

Thomas with his nieces and nephews!!!!!! Obviously Jemima and Hestia would love spending time with him, but I also think Thomas would bond really really well with Quasi. Like, he hears about Quasi's past, and Thomas just wants to wrap the small tom up in the softest blankets. They get very close, and Quasi also becomes best friends with Toulouse and Berlioz!!

I finally finished Light Bringer. Here's my thoughts (obviously, spoilers incoming):

-First and formost, RIP to the king of my heart, Cassius Bellona. The worst part about his death is that you know it's coming the whole book. You don't take a character like him, a former enemy, give him a solid redemption arc, make him the most ABSURDLY likeable character and source of all humor in the book, and then not kill him off. But still, I held out a tiny bit of hope. I really dreaded getting to the end of this book just because I knew it would be coming. But, you had to respect the way he went out at least. Dude's gonna be legend if that counts for anything.

-So, The Abomination was WORRYINGLY absent from this book, aside from a couple of mentions and that (maybe) he's Virginia's mysterious source of intel? Like, everyone is worried about how Atalantia is sitting around building up her power while everyone else is duking it out, but what about the Abomination? I know he's not anybody's most immediate threat in this book, but is anybody else extremely worried about what he's going to get up to in Red God?

-I was happy with the Virginia chapters we did get, but I hope she gets more time in Red God. Also, same to Victra. She was awesome in this book, as always, but like, I want to see you do even more destroying, girl. We love you. I also missed Electra.

-The Bromance in this book was next level, even by the standards previously set in this series. I loved having a little break from the relentless battles and death in Dark Age, to just get the dudes (and Lyria) hanging out and trying to work out their differences. This also helped get back some of the old humor I missed from earlier in the series.

-This was Lyria at her best in my opinion. She was great. I only wish we got to see more Lyria and Cassius because they were just so heart warming.

-Sevro is back! I loved getting to see the old Sevro make his triumphant return for the last third of the book or so. Sevro walking up to Gaia au Raa and just going, "shut up, crone," really made my day.

-Lysander has killed my favorite character of the book two books in a row now. And both times with a gun. I love how this dude talks about how he's secretly really good with a razor, but every time he's confronted with someone who's actually good at using one he just shoots them point blank. I know I've said this before, but seriously guys, fuck Lysander. I mean, even Atalantia is becoming more likeable than him. She may be an evil, power hungry tyrant, but at least she's pretty much honest about it. Everyone knows she's the worst and she barely bothers to pretend otherwise.

-Admittedly, it's been a few years since I've read the other books in the series, but this might be my favorite of the bunch. Pierce Brown really hit every emotional note and character perfectly in this one, and it felt a lot more balanced compared to the (necessary) bleakness of Dark Age.

Electra Heart (a concept album so there’s a TON there - I recommend first listening by watching the respective music videos for each one!! out of all the eras I feel the EH music videos are the most important visually to see for the concept of the album):

Must listen: really the whole album, but… Bubblegum Bitch, Primadonna, Homewrecker, How to Be a Heartbreaker, Teen Idle, Buy The Stars (best slow one)

Extra credit: Fear and Loathing (6 minute album version), Radioactive, Valley of the Dolls, Sex Yeah, Power & Control, The State of Dreaming, Starring Role, Lies, Lonely Hearts Club, Electra Heart (title track released toward the end of the era), all the acoustic versions from this era on youtube, Su-Barbie-A and The Archetypes (2 music videos/snippets on youtube), - (Hypocrates is my least fav on the album but still good)

Froot (full of bops):

Must listen: Froot, Happy, Blue, Solitaire, Savages, Immortal

Extra credit: the rest of the album so- I’m a Ruin, Forget, Gold, Can’t Pin Me Down (my fav), Better Than That - Weeds is my personal least favorite on the album

Love + Fear (love it but my least fav album)

Must listen: Handmade Heaven, Orange Trees, True, To Be Human, End of the Earth, Karma, Emotional Machine, No More Suckers, Soft to be Strong, Believe in Love

Extra credit: The rest of the album is so much weaker in comparison in my opinion. I still listen to the songs if I’m in the mood for it (Enjoy Your Life, Life is Strange, You, Too Afraid) but there are a couple songs I seriously dislike and always skip (Baby, Superstar - sorry to the stans of those songs, don’t hate me) also there are a ton of way better unreleased ones from this era on youtube, tbh

Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land (her most recent as of right now, and such a good one)

Must listen: Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land, Venus Fly Trap (you mentioned you know it, and this is probably my personal favorite!), Man’s World, Purge the Poison (my other fav), Highly Emotional People, New America

Mundane Electra roars and throws a giant rock at Legendary Super Shlorpian and Solar Flare as they manage to dodge it. Then, Solar Flare’s eyes starts to glow orange as he smirks and goes Papa Wolf. Seeing this, Legendary Super Shlorpian smiles and gets ready to throw Mundane Solar Flare.

Korvo/Legendary Super Shlorpian: You ready?

Terry/Solar Flare: starts turning black while growing bigger and muscular Oh fuck yeah! Ready!

Legendary Super Shlorpian throws Solar Flare. Solar Flare then turns finished transforming into his Mundane form as he rips apart his uniform and roars. Mundane Electra then sees Mundane Solar Flare and snarls at him.

Mundane Terry/Solar Flare: Jesse. You're okay. Look at me.

Mundane Electra roars and prepares to throw another rock at Mundane Solar Flare as he gasp.

Principal Cooke/Super Cooke: Poor Terry. He dead.

But, Mundane Solar Flare kept being brave as he sees Mundane Electra snarling.

Mundane Terry/Solar Flare: J-Jesse?

Mundane Electra is about to throw something at her dad. Mundane Electra roars and throws the rock at Mundane Solar Flare who punches it into little ash thanks to his fire powers as he roars. Mundane Solar Flare then grabs Mundane Electra and pin her to the ground while touching her face softly and stroking it. Mundane Jesse realizes what she did and sobs.

Mundane Terry/Solar Flare: Shh. Oh Jesse-Bear. I’m so sorry Night Runner pushed you too far. This would’ve never happened if we had finally realize how truly crazy he is and still be there for you and then Monica would never be captured… you are not a monster… you are Jesse Opposites… a daughter… a sister… and a superhero… you’re our Electra and always will be. Please… come back to me Jesse-Bear…

Mundane Electra then breaks down in tears as tears fall down like waterfalls. Seeing how scared and overwhelmed his daughter is, Mundane Solar embrace his daughter in a hug as he continues to sooth her and comfort his daughter.

A thought suddenly occurred to me... I do not pretend to the indisputable truth...

If Jason Voorhees, Brahms Heelshire, Bo Sinclair, Homelander, the Ae. Targ. bros. and a couple of another men, get a daughter, then these dudes, consciously or not consciously, most likely, not consciously, will raise a daughter with an Electra Complex... Some of them will start their relations with cold, ignoring and detachment. The other part will immediately take the little girl under their care, because: "mine!" And as soon, as these all dudes feel, seriously, really feel, that this girl needs them, that she wants them, that she loves them, just because - papa mode is activated. Someone, immediately, will intentionally begin to instill in her the idea, that "there is no world, except papa, that only dad is your friend, protector, and in general, your daddy is the best and only," and someone will do it unconsciously. Also, it is possible, to limit daughter's social circle by enclosing himself, her father, in the center of her world, attention and love. And when these dudes notice that, in fact, the girl needs her father, she needs his full and undivided attention, they will again, consciously or not, feed and nurture these feelings in her. Yes, someone will also make their own world around her, and someone, and most of them, will be angry, because, in fact, they have their own life, their own desires, interests, responsibilities, in addition to this child.
