WHAT A BANGER SCENE. Elzar has been struggling throughout this book, because he fears that allowing himself to fall into his feelings of love for Avar will mean that his darkness will consume him, that he doesn't know if it will turn into attachment and the dangers that come with that. But attachment is not love. Love flows through you every single day of your live, but you can let it go, and it will come back to you. That loving someone does not mean you will sacrifice other people's happiness for your own security and fears of living without them. A Jedi can love an individual as an individual, everyone has people they're closer to than someone else, but you still cannot hold onto them so tightly that you break them, yourself, and everyone around you. And this entire scene is pretty much exactly what I've been saying--the Jedi don't and never have forbidden feelings or loving someone. Hell, George Lucas even said of the prequels Jedi, that if Anakin had been found earlier by them, he would have been trained to love people without attachment. Because attachment is not love.

depa telling caleb “go. i’ll be right behind you” and he knows she’s lying, but what can he do? he’s 14 and scared, and this is his master and he trusts her. so he runs anyway, even though he knows she won’t be behind him.

stellan telling elzar “we’ll be right behind you” and elzar goes. willingly, easily. because stellan is stellan again. stellan is his guiding star, and he’s never steered elzar wrong. so why would he lie? he couldn’t have known that stellan went down there with the conviction to save elzar, to save the people of eiram, even at the cost of his own life.

elzar goes because he believes stellan will be right behind him.
