Dunkirk
Christopher Nolan is known for his phenomenal cinematic creations. The worldwide success of the Dark Night trilogy Nolan directed drew in a younger audience to his films. Since then, he has created various other films; such as Interstellar. Taking a turn away from the fantasy styled genre, Nolan directed Dunkirk. This film is indeed a change from his more commonly known works, as rather than relying on imagination and creativity; Nolan took on the challenge of filming a historical, action film. In the beginning of the film, cut scenes are shown between the setting and a brief description of the history of Dunkirk. In other reviews, I have seen people criticise the lack of context that Nolan gives the audience. However, I personally didn’t have an issue with this as on top of being a creative industries nerd, I am a history nerd as well. (I know. I’m a real catch, huh?). However; I believe Nolan did it that way on purpose. Those who didn’t know the story were able to learn more from the film, this also could be a technique to instil curiosity in the audience; making them go and research the history of Dunkirk on their own. Throughout the film, there are various references that call the audience back to reality. The mentions of Prime Minister Churchill being one of the major ones; given that everyone has heard of him. It’s a reminder that this is not merely a film, but a historical retelling of a major World War II battle. Moving on from this, we enter the streets of Dunkirk, where the audience follows a group of soldiers looking for water. Gunshots ring out and they flee, the soldiers are unable to see the shooters and are left to make a run for their lives. The sole survivor becomes one of our central characters; Tommy. The immense isolation is shown through the characters and their empty surroundings. The continuous use of extreme long shots further implements the isolation of the soldiers. Using aviation to create these shots of the expansive beach draws attention to the destruction that has occurred, to force the soldiers down onto the beach. Adding onto this is the shots of the expansive ocean before them. The phrase ‘You can almost see it’ is used repeatedly to establish the ‘so close but so far away’ notion. Close to home, but far from getting there. Nolan also employs underwater sequences to showcase the struggle faced by the soldiers that are trying to leave. Torpedos fill the sea, making escape seemingly impossible. Another way Nolan creates and incredible sense of environment is through the aviation sequences. Within the aviation sequences, Nolan gives multiple perspectives on the aircraft. Those being: a gun barrel view, third person view, first person view and various accounts of tracking shots. The sky, along with the ocean, is a vast space that leaves people feeling the isolation the pilot and soldiers experiencing it feel. Directly juxtaposing this is Nolan’s use of close up shots. These are used in the most intense times to highlight the struggles of the characters and involve the audience into feeling their emotions. The cut scenes are effectively implemented to portray the different struggles of the different characters. From soldiers to the pilots to the civilians like Mr Dawson that are en-route to help them. The sounds quality has to work hand in hand with these cuts and create a seamless piece. This is achieved in an exceptional way. Between the loudness of gunfire, explosions and the whirring of plane engines; the environment is maintained throughout. We are also given much softer sounds, showing the attention to detail. The films conclusion begins with the soft ticking sounds that runs across the final moments, the concluding sound is the crinkle of a newspaper being folded. The ticking effectively builds suspense whilst the newspaper animates the feeling of a round about conclusion. The actors portray the soldier basis excellently. They appear clothed in their uniforms, but dirty. The expressions worn represent their withdrawn, sullen attitude towards their current place in the war. A major factor to note in the cast is Harry Styles role. There was a lot of hype and uncertainty created around him and his position on a film after being a boyband member. However, those who doubted him should will eat their words as they watch him dominate the big screen with finesse. The dialogue maintains itself minimal rate, this when it is used it comes across far more effectively than it would if there was a non-stop string of words. The language used showcases the feelings of anger and depression. The aviation pilot picked up by Mr Dawson at sea symbolises the ugly side of war. Mr Dawson explains to George and his son that he is suffering from ‘Shell Shock Syndrome’, or, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Honing onto the real life issues that come about with war and its causes and effects. In conclusion, Nolan’s Dunkirk is a film that captures the essence of what the battle was. The film is easily one of the best to hit cinemas this year. With Nolan as a director, the production was surrounded by high excitement, given his reputation as a filmmaker. I was blown away by the film. My eyes never left the screen and there was nothing that could have distracted be from the incredible piece before me. Rate: ★★★★★

We Were Liars
We Were Liars is a gripping novel authored by E. Lockhart, settling itself into the mystery/thriller genre. The novel sits at a comfortable 225 pages of excruciatingly beautiful and well executed mystery. Lockhart captures the image of wealth, secrets, deceit and family; the latter being heavily called on. The fiction novel was released in 2014, showcasing Lockhart's ability to create a truly unforgettable piece of work. Readers follow along with the Sinclair cousins, known as the 'Liars': Mirren, Johnny, Gat and Cadence. The group are each described with key words that allude further throughout the book. The Sinclair family are extraordinarily wealthy and spend their Summer's on their private Beechwood Island. The Liars refer to each visit as the number of times they've been there. For example, Summer 15; the year Cadence is trawling back through. The younger cousins of the Sinclair family are often referred to the littles, they become more active members of the story during Summer 17. The book is written from the perspective of Cadence, introducing her family and telling the reader she was in an accident; her memory of Summer 15 is gone. From there, the novel follows her through remembering the accident and the events afterwards. As Cadence is desperately spending Summer 17 trying to piece together Summer 15, her family members are asked by her mother to not discuss the incident. Thrill with mystery, a dash of romance and Lockhart's incredibly sophisticated writing style; We Were Liars is a compelling story that keeps you wanting more. Her reliance on imagery and metaphors further impact the reader as they follow along with Cadence. The mystery surrounding Cadence's accident paired with the stylistic choices of Lockhart creates an immersion like no other; you'll be thinking about this story days after you've completed it. Hacksaw Ridge
By now, we've all heard of the blockbuster movie Hacksaw Ridge; and with good reason. Directed by Mel Gibson, this movie hit cinemas and gained a monumental following. Hacksaw Ridge experienced 14 years or pre-production hell, the rights for the film had been bounced around between companies and significant figures before finally settling with Mechanic. From there, they approached Mel Gibson to direct. In November of 2014, Gibson agreed; this was to be his first directorial since 2006. However, a forewarning to those who are yet to see the film: the violence and gore is explicitly shown. If this disturbs you in any way; you may not find yourself enjoying the film. The film follows the iconic story of Desmond Doss, a World War Two medic who was single-handedly responsible for saving the lives of 75 soldiers on Hacksaw Ridge. The plight of the task did nothing to slow Doss down, at the films end; we see the real Desmond recounting how he did it. "With each body I said: 'Dear God, help me get one more'". This man is a true legend, his dedication to saving lives is unprecedented. Doss's refusal to bear arms was a major controversy, this was shown in the film and was only allowed to continue serving in the war after his father steps in. Doss's father, Tom, barges his way into the trial stating pacifism is protected under Congress. Despite the issues between the father and son, this moment shows the love that's lying just below the surface. We are shown the events that lead to Doss's strong pacifist beliefs in his early life, as well as his Christian background. The film was created on a $40 million budget and upon its announcement was given high expectations. Andrew Garfield was named to play Doss in 2014; this being his most iconic role since his part in The Amazing Spiderman 1&2. Another big name Hollywood actor, Hugo Weaving was chosen for the part of Doss's father. Weaving puts on a remarkable performance portraying Tom. Tom Doss was a World War I veteran who came back with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; from this he struggled with alcoholism and violence. PTSD was uknown during this time, making the battle that much harder. Weaving's part relies heavily on emotional disorder. He portrays expertise in his composure and expression of Tom's break downs. The scene that truly shows this is when Hal - Desmond's brother - walks into a family dinner in an Army uniform; announcing he's enlisted. His father begins launching into a story of a friend of his during WWI, saying how both his friend and his son look good in the uniform; but how he will meet a gruesome end. Tom breaks down; the sight of his son going off to war triggering more memories to surface. Weaving does a remarkable job showcasing how a sufferer in this situation would react. Another example is when Desmond then tells his father he's also enlisting; but as a medic. This scene takes place as Tom is visiting his best friends; all of who died in the war. The scenes surrounding Tom were all heavily emotional, and Weaving was given the task of portraying a man who's captive to his own mind. Onto Garfield's performance of Doss, we see an accurate depiction of the man himself. Lanky and tall, Garfield fits the description. After the flop of The Amazing Spiderman this film gave Garfield a chance to fully prove himself as a strong actor. He succeeded in this. This is the most powerful performance seen from Garfield in his acting career. He shows the incredible amounts of strength, resilience and morality that Doss himself possessed. The film was nominated for the Oscars for various roles; it walked away with two awards. Best Sound Mixing and Best film editing were awarded to the film, the film was a nominee for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor also. It goes without saying that Hacksaw Ridge is an incredible film. It was brought together by an incredible director, cast and crew who were rewarded for their efforts. It's a biographical film that captured a large audience for its story and its filming method. The bulk of the film was filmed on location rather than on a set; furthering its appreciation among film lovers and critics all round. I highly recommend this film. It's moving, incredibly well set and truly unforgettable. Rate: ★★★★★
