THE BIBLE IS THE REVEALED WORD OF GOD
& ULTIMATE AUTHORITY
& TESTIFIES ABOUT CHRIST.
BibleTestimony of the Scripture
John 5 New American Standard
39 You examine the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is those very Scriptures that testify about Me; 40 and yet you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41 I do not receive glory from people; 42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you accept glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have put your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
WHAT DOES THIS TELL ME ABOUT GOD?
WHAT DOES THIS TELL ME ABOUT SIN?
WHAT DOES THIS TELL ME ABOUT MYSELF?
Philippians 4 New American Standard Bible
Think of Excellence
4:1 Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, whom I long to see, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved. 2 I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to live in harmony in the Lord. 3 Indeed, true companion, I ask you also, help these women who have shared my struggle in the cause of the gospel, together with Clement as well as the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life. 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! 5 Let your gentle spirit be known to all people. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 As for the things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. God’s Provisions
10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned before, but you lacked an opportunity to act. 11 Not that I speak from need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. 12 I know how to get along with little, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. 13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. 14 Nevertheless, you have done well to share with me in my difficulty. 15 You yourselves also know, Philippians, that at the first preaching of the gospel, after I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving except you alone; 16 for even in Thessalonica you sent a gift more than once for my needs. 17 Not that I seek the gift itself, but I seek the profit which increases to your account. 18 But I have received everything in full and have an abundance; I am amply supplied, having received from Epaphroditus what you have sent, a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. 19 And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 20 Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever. Amen. 21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me greet you. 22 All the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar’s household. 23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
Ephesians 6New American Standard Bible
The Armor of God 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against [f]flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand firm therefore, having belted your waist with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having strapped on your feet the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 [g]in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 [h]With every prayer and request, [i]pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, [j]be alert with all perseverance and every request for all the [k]saints, 19 and pray in my behalf, that speech may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in [l]chains; that [m]in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. 21 Now, so that you also may know about my circumstances as to [n]what I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful [o]servant in the Lord, will make everything known to you. 22 [p]I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know [q]about us, and that he may comfort your hearts. 23 Peace be to the brothers and sisters, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ [r]with incorruptible love.

DCLM Daily Manna Devotional - Spirit Of Giving
The Topic of Deeper Life Daily Manna Devotional for 9th January 2024 Is “Spirit Of Giving“
Text:  Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only” (Philippians 4:15). KEY VERSE: Philippians 4:15-20 (KJV) 15 Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. 16 For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity. 17 Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account. 18 But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God. 19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. 20 Now unto God and our Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
A poet wrote, “What I gave away I saved, what I spent I used, what I kept I lost. Giving to the Lord is but transporting our goods to a higher floor. In defiance of all the torture and malice and might of the world, the liberal man will ever be rich, for God’s providence is his estate.” The verses under consideration reveal Apostle Paul’s commendation of the Philippian church for ministering to his needs. Members of that church gave sacrificially and supported the apostle’s ministry heartily. Paul appreciated the gifts, and the spirit of love and devotion with which the brethren gave. Missionary, evangelical outreach support and welfare giving to the needy in the church is honoured and acceptable to God. What Christians give in support of missionary and evangelical work is regarded as an offering brought to God. When you remember what Christ did on the cross for you, it should not take long preaching before you give willingly to the Lord. Believers are called and constrained to give their best to God and His work as a mere expression of love for what He has done for them. However, like the Philippian brethren, God expects you to give yourself to Him first. You must accept Christ as your Lord and personal Saviour; and then give the best of your time, talents and treasures to Him. Your giving should not be limited to special funds and church projects but to the needy. The Lord Jesus Christ commended givers, revealing that whatever we give to the brethren, the needy and the poor, is lent to Him. He also promised that we will not lose our reward in time and eternity. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY We get by giving; get more by giving more. THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Matthew 20-21 Read the full article

Philippians 2:12-13  |  ¹² Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence but now even more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation with fear & trembling. ¹³ For it is GOD who works in you to will & to act on behalf of HIS good purpose.
Charles John Ellicott, Theologian [1749-1905] | Philippians 2:12-30
5. Exhortation & Commendation
[1] EXHORTATION TO WORK OUT THEIR SALVATION       through the in working of GOD, & so to be lights       in the world, & the glory of the Apostle, even in       the hour of martyrdom [v.12-18]
[2] PAUL’S INTENTION TO SEND TIMOTHY, AND HOPE       TO COME HIMSELF SHORTLY [v.19-24]
[3] PRESENT MISSION OF EPAPHRODITUS, now       recovered from his late sickness, & strong       commendation of his zeal [v.25-30]
[12-18] By the word “wherefore” Paul connects       this exhortation with the great passage above.
For the main idea is here of the presence of GOD in them, working glory thru a condition of humiliation, on condition of their fellow-working with HIM; so they shall appear as the “sons of GOD” & as “lights in the world.”
In all this there is clearly the imperfect but true like -ness of the indwelling of GODhead in our LORD’s humanity, exalting it thru the two-fold humiliation to the unspeakable glory.
[12] As ye have always obeyed—It is notable this        Epistle is the only one which contains no direct        rebuke.
The Philippian Church has the glory of having “always obeyed,” not [like Galatian Church] “as in HIS presence only, but now much more in HIS absence.”
This “obedience” was to the will of GOD as set forth by HIM; in referring to it, there is an allusion to the “obedience” of CHRIST [v.8]; hence their obedience includes also that willingness to suffer which HE HIMSELF has shown.
[Philippians 1:29-30]
To this, perhaps, there is a further allusion in the “fear & trembling” spoken of below.
[See 2 Corinthians 7:15; Ephesians 6:5]
Work out your own salvation—To “work out” is to carry out to completion what is begun [per Ephesians 6:13]
This is the function of man, as fellow-worker with GOD first in HIS OWN soul, & then among HIS brethren.
GOD is the “beginner & perfecter” of every “good work” [see Philippians 1:6]; man’s co-operation is secondary & intermediate.

I urge Euodia and Syntyche to be in harmony in the Lord. Rejoice in the Lord always—again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentleness be known to all people. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything—but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the shalom of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Messiah Yeshua. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any virtue and if there is anything worthy of praise—dwell on these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—put these things into practice, and the God of shalom will be with you. I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at last you have revived your concern for me (though you were concerned before but lacked opportunity to show it). I am not saying this because I am in need—for whatever circumstance I am in, I have learned to be content. I know what it is to live with humble means, and I know what it is to live in prosperity. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of contentment—both to be filled and to go hungry, to have abundance and to suffer need. I can do all things through Messiah who strengthens me. Nevertheless, you have done well to share in my trouble. Now you Philippians also know that in the beginning of the Good News, when I left Macedonia, not a single community partnered with me in giving and receiving—except you alone. For even in Thessalonica you sent something for my need more than once. Not that I am looking for a gift, but for fruit that overflows to your credit. But I have received everything and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, having received from Epaphroditus what you sent—a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. My God will fulfill every need of yours according to the riches of His glory in Messiah Yeshua. To our God and Father be the glory forever and ever! Amen. Philippians Chapter 4
1  Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved. Exhortation, Encouragement, and Prayer 2  I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord. 3  Yes, I ask you also, true companion, help these women, who have labored side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life. 4  Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5  Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6  do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8  Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9  What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. God's Provision 10  I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11  Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13  I can do all things through him who strengthens me. 14  Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble. 15  And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. 16  Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. 17  Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. 18  I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. 19  And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 20  To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen. Final Greetings 21  Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me greet you. 22  All the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar's household. 23  The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

Fill Up My Joy By Being United In Love And Humility
1 If then there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of  love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any deep-feelings and compassions, 2 fill-up my joy, which is that you be thinking the same thing, having the same love, united-in-spirit, thinking the one thing, 3 doing nothing based-on selfish-interest nor based on conceit, but with humble-mindedness regarding one another as surpassing yourselves; 4 not each looking-out-for your own things, but also each the things of others.
Think And Behave Like Christ Did
5 Be thinking this in you, which also was in Christ Jesus— 6 Who, while being in the form of God, did not regard the being equal with God a thing-to-be-grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, having taken the form of a slave, having come in the likeness of humans. And having been found as a man in outward-appearance, 8 He humbled Himself, having become obedient to the point of death— and a death of a cross! 9 Therefore God also highly-exalted Him, and granted Him the name above every name 10 in-order-that every knee should bow at the name of Jesus— of heavenly ones and earthly ones and ones under-the-earth— 11 and every tongue should confess-out that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Work Out Your Salvation As Shining Lights In The World, Holding Out The Word of Life
12 So then my beloved, just as you always obeyed— not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence— be working-out your salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For God is the One working in you both the wanting and the working, for His good-pleasure. 14 Be doing all things without grumblings and arguments 15 in-order-that you may become blameless and innocent, children of God without-blemish amidst a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you are shining as lights in the world, 16 holding-out the word of life— for a boast for me in the day of Christ that I did not run in vain nor labor in vain!
But Let Us Rejoice Together No Matter What Happens To Me
17 But if I even am being poured-out upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am rejoicing [over it], and rejoicing-with you all. 18 And you also be rejoicing the same way, and be rejoicing-with me.
I Am Hoping To Send Timothy To You, And To Come Soon Myself
19 Now I am hoping in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon in order that I also may be cheered, having come-to-know the things concerning you. 20 For I have no one likeminded who will genuinely be concerned-about the things concerning you. 21 For the ones all are seeking their own things, not the things of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know his approvedness, because he served with me for the good-news as a child with a father. 23 So indeed I am hoping to send this one at-once, whenever I see the things with-respect-to me. 24 And I am confident in the Lord that I myself also will come soon.
I Sent Back Epaphroditus, Your Precious Servant To My Need. Rejoice In Him.
25 But I regarded it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus— my brother and fellow-worker and fellow-soldier, and your delegate and minister of my need— 26 because he was yearning-for you all, and was being distressed because you heard that he was sick. 27 For indeed he was sick nearly to death. But God had-mercy-on him— and not him only, but also me, in order that I should not have grief upon grief. 28 Therefore I sent him more-eagerly, in order that having seen him again you may rejoice, and I may be less-grieved. 29 So receive him in the Lord with all joy, and be holding such ones precious, 30 because he drew-near to the point of death for the sake of the work of Christ— having risked his life in order that he might fill-up your lack of service to me. — Philippians 2 | Disciples’ Literal New Testament (DLNT) Disciples' Literal New Testament: Serving Modern Disciples by More Fully Reflecting the Writing Style of the Ancient Disciples, Copyright © 2011 Michael J. Old Testament:
Job 1
Job 1 (Listen)
Job’s Character and Wealth
1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. 2 There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. 3 He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys, and very many servants, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east. 4 His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and cursedThe Hebrew word bless is used euphemistically for curse in 1:5, 11; 2:5, 9‘>1 God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.
Satan Allowed to Test Job
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and SatanHebrew the Accuser or the Adversary; so throughout chapters 1–2‘>2 also came among them. 7 The LORD said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the LORD and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” 8 And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” 9 Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? 10 Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.” 12 And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.
Satan Takes Job’s Property and Children
13 Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 14 and there came a messenger to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15 and the Sabeans fell upon them and took them and struck down the servantsHebrew the young men; also verses 16, 17‘>3 with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 16 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 17 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “The Chaldeans formed three groups and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 18 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 19 and behold, a great wind came across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
20 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”
22 In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.

2 I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord. 3 Yes, I ask you also, true companion,Or loyal Syzygus; Greek true yokefellow‘>1 help these women, who have laboredOr strived (see 1:27)‘>2 side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.
4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonablenessOr gentleness‘>3 be known to everyone.
9 What you have learnedOr these things— 9which things you have also learned‘>4 and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
God’s Provision
10 I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
14 Yet it was kind of you to shareOr have fellowship in‘>5 my trouble. 15 And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. 16 Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit.Or I seek the profit that accrues to your account‘>6 18 I have received full payment, and more. Amen.
Final Greetings
21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me greet you. 22 All the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar’s household.
23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

Meanwhile, I thought I should send Epaphroditus back to you. He is a true brother, co-worker, and fellow soldier. And he was your messenger to help me in my need. Philippians 2:25 Oh Jesus Lord and Savior, you are our great king. I pray that you will deliver me and develop in me the heart that truly serve and honor you. If others will commend me, let it be because of my service to you and my desire to praise you, not for any other reason. Lord, I desire to grow and mature, may it be my relationship with you and my enthusiasm in serving the true living God, amen. Maayong buntag. EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL, THE APOSTLE, TO THE PHILIPPIANS - From The Latin Vulgate Bible
Chapter 3
PREFACE.
Philippi, a considerable city in Macedonia, so called from Philip, father of Alexander the Great. St. Paul had preached there. Those people had a great veneration for him, and supplied his wants when he was at Corinth, and again when he was a prisoner at Rome, sending to him by Epaphroditus, who is thought to have been the bishop of Philippi. St. Paul sent this letter by him to the Philippians, (written during his imprisonment) from Rome; but whether during his first or second imprisonment, is uncertain. It is generally believed that St. Paul wrote it about the year 62, in his first confinement. In it he testifies to the faithful his most tender gratitude and acknowledgement for the assistance they had sent him, and a zeal the most ardent for their salvation. He felicitates them on their courage under sufferings for the cause of Jesus Christ, on their good works also, and forcibly excites them to confidence and joy. The Philippians were the first among the Macedonians converted to the faith. St. Paul, in this epistle, recommends charity, unity, and humility; and warns them against false teachers, whom he calls dogs, and enemies of the cross of Christ. He also returns thanks for their benefactions. It was written about twenty-nine years after our Lord's ascension.
Chapter 3
He warneth them against false teachers: he counts all other things loss, that he may gain Christ.
1 As to the rest, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not wearisome, but to you necessary.
Notes & Commentary:
Ver. 1. To write. From hence it would appear, says Grotius, that St. Paul had intended to have finished his letter at the end of the preceding chapter; but something new occurring to him, he added the two following chapters.
2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.
Ver. 2. Beware of dogs.[1] The Jews called so the Gentiles; and St. Paul now applies it to those among the Jews who spread false doctrine, who privately snarled and publicly barked against the true apostles. None deserve sharp reprehension more than heretical preachers. --- Beware of the concision, or as some French translations, of false circumcision. St. Paul by derision makes use of this word, which signifies a cutting to pieces, or destruction. (Witham)
Note 1:
Ver. 2. Videte canes....Videte Concisionem, blepete tous kunas....ton katatomen. The Jewish circumcision at this time, says St. Chrysostom (log. 1.) was merely a cutting off of the flesh: ouden allo e sarkos tome esti, kai katatome.
3 For we are the circumcision, who serve God in spirit, and glory in Christ Jesus, not having confidence in the flesh:
Ver. 3. For we are the circumcision. We Christians now use the only profitable and commendable spiritual circumcision; which, to the Colossians (ii. 11.) he calls the circumcision of Christ, and to the Romans (ii. 29.) circumcision of the heart in the spirit. --- Not having confidence in the flesh; i.e. in such carnal ceremonies. (Witham)
4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other thinketh he may have confidence in the flesh, I more,
5 Being circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews, as to the law a Pharisee,
6 As to zeal, persecuting the church of God, as to the justice that is in the law, conversing without blame.
7 But what things were gain to me, those I have counted loss for Christ.
Ver. 4-7. If any other thinketh he may have confidence in the flesh, in being of the Jewish race and of their religion, I more; i.e. I have greater reasons to glory than they have, being circumcised of the stock of Israel, &c. --- But what things, &c. as soon as I was miraculously called to the knowledge and faith of Christ. (Witham)
8 But indeed I count all things to be but loss, for the excellent knowledge of Jesus Christ, my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but as dung, that I may gain Christ,
Ver. 8. No explanation given.
9 And may be found in him not having my justice, which is of the law, but that which is of the faith of Christ Jesus: the justice which is of God in faith,
Ver. 9. I may be found in him not having my justice, which is of the law; i.e. not pretending to be justified either by my own works or by the works of the Jewish law, but by that which proceedeth from faith in Christ, and by his merits. (Witham) --- St. Augustine expounds the sense thus: not that justice which is in God, or by which God is just, but that which is in man from God, and by his gifts. (lib. 3. cont. 2. ep. Pelag.)
10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable to his death:
Ver. 10. That I may know him. This knowledge of Christ the apostle prefers to all honours and advantages accruing from his adherence to the synagogue.
11 If by any means I may attain to the resurrection, which is from the dead:
Ver. 11. If by any means I may attain to the resurrection, which is from the dead; i.e. may attain to a happy resurrection, when the dead shall rise again. (Witham) --- This manner of expression does not betray any distrust or fear, but merely insinuates the difficulty of the enterprise, the uncertainty of success, and the ardent desire of the apostle, who sought by every means to arrive at this happiness, either by sufferings and labours, or even by martyrdom. (St. Chrysostom; Estius)
12 Not as though I had already attained, or were already perfect: but I follow after, if I may by any means apprehend that in which I am also apprehended by Christ Jesus.
Ver. 12. Not as though I had already attained the happiness I hope for, or am now become perfect as to that perfection in virtue, which I must always endeavour to increase in; but, like a person still running a race for a prize, I pursue and run as well as I can, I stretch myself with perseverance towards[2] the mark, forgetting that part of the course which I had made. Let all of us, though perfect as to the knowledge of the mysteries we are to believe, be of this mind, that we are still to advance in the way of Christian perfection; and if any of you be of another mind, and think otherwise, God will reveal to you and teach you this truth, that we may all continue in the same rule of doctrine and discipline. We may here take notice with St. Chrysostom that it is not enough to believe, or have the true faith, but that we must strive and labour to the end in the way of perfection; secondly that St. Paul did not look upon himself absolutely certain of his salvation: and how much greater presumption would this be in us? (Witham)
13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended. But one thing I do: forgetting the things that are behind, and stretching forth myself to those that are before,
Ver. 13. I do not count myself. That is, I do not suppose that vain security is sufficient to put my salvation out of doubt, and that Christ having died, nothing remains for me to do. No; I consider myself as a wrestler at the games, uncertain of success. (Calmet)
14 I pursue towards the mark, for the prize of the supernal vocation, of God in Christ Jesus.
Ver. 14. Ad destinatum, kata skopon dioko. See St. Chrysostom of the necessity of good works, (log. is. p. 65) and of the uncertainty a man is always in of his salvation. p. 67.
15 Let us, therefore, as many as are perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing you be otherwise minded, this also God will reveal to you.
Ver. 15. No explanation given.
16 Nevertheless where unto we are already come, that we be of the same mind: let us also continue in the same rule.
Ver. 16. No explanation given.
17 Be followers of me, brethren, and observe them who walk so, as you have our model.
Ver.17. Be followers of me, always in distrust of your own merits, and always eager to advance in perfection, as I am. It is a happy thing when a pastor can thus in all sincerity and simplicity address his flock. --- He exhorts them to follow him in what he had taught them, and in the model of a good life, which he had set before them. He repeats to them, with tears, what he had formerly told them, that many walk and conduct themselves as enemies to the cross of Christ, to Christ crucified, by abandoning themselves to the pleasures of a sensual life, who glory in things they ought to be ashamed of. He hints at the disciples of Simon Magus, or of the Jewish doctors. (Witham)
18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often (and now tell you weeping) that they are enemies of the cross of Christ:
Ver. 18. No explanation given.
19 Whose end is destruction: whose God is their belly: and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.
Ver. 19. No explanation given.
20 But our conversation is in heaven: whence also we expect the Saviour, our Lord Jesus Christ,
Ver. 20. No explanation given.
21 Who will reform the body of our lowness, made like to the body of his glory, according to the operation whereby also he is able to subdue all things unto himself.
Ver. 21. No explanation given.

Giving Can Be Worship
PHILIPPIANS 4:18 NIV 18 I have received full payment and even more; I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.
In the New Testament two verses speak of a fragrant offering to God. The first (Ephesians 5:2) refers to the sacrifice of Jesus. The second (Philippians 4:18) refers to giving offerings to Paul while he was in jail. The wording used in these two verses reminds us of the Old Testament offerings, especially the burnt offerings.
Obviously, Father God was pleased with Jesus’ sacrifice. Because of the wording used in Philippians 4:18, we should understand that God is also very pleased with our giving, which shows our love for Him and the Gospel.
From the Old Testament we see that God was pleased with the worship He received through burnt offerings. They were called a “sweet savour” or a “pleasing aroma.” But they had no human purpose or benefit. They were not used to feed people. The burnt offering was just burned. It was pure worship of God. Can you imagine taking a perfectly good animal – which would be worth over $1,000 USD today – and just burning it? Yet God commanded this to be done in Old Testament times, so it is evident He approved of it then and even seemingly enjoyed it.
When God asked Solomon to make a request of Him, and Solomon responded by asking for wisdom, it was the same day Solomon had already offered one thousand burnt offerings to the Lord (1 Kings 3:4-5). The value was over $1 million USD that had no purpose except to worship God. No one ate the meat. No one got any benefit out of all this killing and sacrifice except God.
Imagine you were God and were always giving, always blessing, always doing good for others. Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone demonstrate by their actions how much they valued you?
Matthew 26:7-10 tells of a woman who poured an alabaster box of expensive perfume on Jesus. The disciples complained that it should have been sold for much money and given to the poor, but Jesus commended her for doing good. Then He said what she did should be told to the whole world (verse 13).
Worship means demonstrating “worth-ship,” or showing how much we value someone.
Our giving to the Lord can be evidence of our love, proof of our devotion, and a sign of our commitment to the Lord.
So our giving should not always be only because of the needs of people, but because of our love for God.
SAY THIS: I will worship God with what He has given me.

"Like stars in the universe" - this is the contrast between Christians and the rest of the world, says Paul. No wonder we can feel 'out of place', arousing as much suspicion and antagonism as admiration; find it hard to fit in with workplace morals or college attitudes ... At least in the West we are rarely arrested; because almost all our laws were first based on biblical principles.
Paul commends two people in particular; Timothy, because he "served as a son with his father", and "takes a genuine interest in your welfare" - he is all about others, and learning to serve in relationship, not as a chore; and Epaphroditus, who "nearly died" completing his mission, again serving the church (as well as Paul) and who 'made it' through sheer tenacity. Love does that where duty cannot.

The Man Who Had Proven To Be Godly
Many of Paul's epistles are filled with letters of him commending the people of God he worked with. He was a true spiritual father, who loved both the churches he planted, and the people he mentored. In the second chapter of the book of Philippians particularly verses 25-30, we see another example of Paul commending someone he worked closely with. He spoke highly of his co-worker Epaphroditus, who had proven to be a man of God to both Paul, and the church of Philippi. Philippians 2:25-26, 28-30 says..."Meanwhile, I thought I should send Epaphroditus back to you. He is a true brother, co-worker, and fellow soldier. And he was your messenger to help me in my need. I am sending him because he has been longing to see you, and he was very distressed that you heard he was ill." "So I am all the more anxious to send him back to you, for I know you will be glad to see him, and then I will not be so worried about you. Welcome him in the Lord’s love and with great joy, and give him the honor that people like him deserve. For he risked his life for the work of Christ, and he was at the point of death while doing for me what you couldn’t do from far away.” ‭‭ Those were honest words spoken from a true spiritual father. I want to encourage you to be the kind of person who can be spoken highly of. It is my prayer that there will be more Epaphroditus out there. Would you join me in pledging to be the kind of person who is worthy to be commended?
