A Dry White Season (1989). A white middle class South African suburbanite with no interest in politics agrees to help his black gardener find his jailed son. His investigation opens his eyes to the horrors committed by the secret police and turns him into a target.
It's so strange, having watched this for the first time only days before Donald Sutherland passed away. That's probably colouring my review now a bit, but honestly, he was just staggering as an actor. A generational talent on full display in this complex, brutal film about the South African Apartheid. He's bolstered by a tremendous supporting cast, a harrowing direction and a very good script, making this movie feel like one of the best in a genre that can often feel exploitative. Just a really, really good film anchored by the always brilliant Donald Sutherland, may he rest in peace. 8/10.

Celebrating Euzhan Palcy!
"This is why I've wanted to make films since I was ten years old. It was really painful for me. I was sick of seeing Black folks denigrated on screen. "

A Dry White Season (1989)
"Euzhan Palcy’s searing 1989 drama A Dry White Season—an indictment of South Africa’s racist apartheid-era regime that made its own mark on history, becoming the first Hollywood studio film directed by a black woman—owes much of its power to its stellar cast."

Sugar Cane Alley (1983) "Every once in a while a movie will come out of nowhere. The actors will be people we've never seen before, the location will be an unfamiliar one, the director's name will be brand new, and everything will fit together so naturally that we wonder where these people have been all their lives. In a way, the very story of "Sugar Cane Alley" answers that question." Read Roger Ebert's review.

Oof. Between the lingerie slip, the taffeta skirt, the mesh sleeves with the rhinestones... this is a costume and it looks ridiculous.

because how is the movie with a racist joke about smallpox more deserving of the actual indigenous american woman who got nominated.... white people are something else. your "feminist piece" is a advertisement. a corporate cash grab. it will never hold the same weight as the work and talent of agnes varda, of euzhan palcy, of julie dash or lizzie borden. "but Barbie is for little girls!!" and girls deserve something that isn't the workings of a corporation!!!!!!! Barbie was made to sell you something and the message was thrown in because what else can you do with Barbie? mattel has been doing this feminist thing for a few decades due to the constant backlash Barbie has gotten over the years. all this smoke for a award that doesn't mean much anyway but none for the many women directors who still struggle to get funding or distribution for their films. you people don't care about women in film, it's all a farce.

Actor Michael J. Fox accepts honorary Oscar for Parkinson's advocacy
Tumblr media
Michael J. Fox, an actor best known for his roles in the "Back to the Future" films and the 1980s TV comedy "Family Ties," earned an honorary Oscar on Saturday for his advocacy efforts that have helped generate $1.5 billion for Parkinson's disease research.
At the age of 29, Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's, a neurological condition that results in tremors and other symptoms. Later, he stopped acting, and in 2000 he established the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research to support the effort to find a treatment.
"It is humbling in the deepest way to stand here and accept your kindness," the Canadian actor said on stage at the annual Governors Awards, where an A-list crowd of stars including Tom Hanks and Jennifer Lawrence gave him a standing ovation.
Tumblr media
Fox said the hardest part about his diagnosis was "grappling with the uncertainty" and that he had kept his diagnosis private for years because "I didn't know if an audience could laugh if they knew I was struggling."
The 61-year-old Canadian actor was presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences' board of governors and was introduced by Woody Harrelson, a friend.
"He turned a chilling diagnosis into a courageous mission," the "Cheers" actor said.
Other recipients of the Governors Awards included prolific songwriter Diane Warren, whose songs have been featured in more than 100 movies.
Warren, 66, has been nominated for an Oscar for best original song 13 times but never won.
"I've waited 34 years to say this: I'd like to thank the Academy," Warren said to applause on Saturday.
Tumblr media
Also honored were Australian director Peter Weir, known for films including "Witness" and "Dead Poets Society," and Euzhan Palcy, who became the first Black woman to direct a film for a major Hollywood studio with "A Dry White Season."

BS+ app
Brown Sugar Days is now focusing on diversifying its content with the creation of their new application : BS+. The app provides information on upcoming festival dates and films. It also make competitions for goodies and free tickets to the festival.
But beyond that, BS+ is also a journalistic media covering the latest news of the Afro cinema and series.
Tumblr media
There are two sections of articles on the app.
The news section :
provides information on forthcoming cinema or platform releases of French movies or foreign films with black actors in the lead roles. They select films or series that promote black people. For example, for Ahmed Sylla's French films like « Jumeaux mais pas trop » and « Les femmes du square », there were no news articles about their release.
On the other hand, the film Le jeune Imam, which gives a different view of black people in France, was highlighted on BS+ with an article on its release.
Tumblr media
The Culture section :
focuses on black actors and producers in France and the USA, highlighting their successes. On the French side, you can find an article on Euzhan Palcy, who received an honorary Oscar in 2022 for her entire career. For the west coast side, there's an article on 50 Cent, who now produces his own series such as Power. Despite this, he has been criticised for promoting gangster culture.

Florida elementary school temporarily bars ‘Ruby Bridges’ film following parent’s complaint
Florida elementary school temporarily bars ‘Ruby Bridges’ film following parent’s complaint
A Florida school district has temporarily barred students from viewing a historical film about real-life civil rights pioneer Ruby Bridges at an elementary school after a parent filed a complaint this month. To get more news about elementary, you can visit wikifx.com official website.
After the parent requested that the school district remove the movie from the school’s list of approved films, Pinellas County Schools officials temporarily banned “Ruby Bridges” from the elementary school until it’s assessed by a committee. A link to the trailer was provided in the permission slips for all parents to review, Pinellas County Schools public information officer Isabel Mascareñas told NBC News.
After the complaint was filed, Mascareñas said in a statement to NBC News, “it was communicated with the parent that the school would not have any future showings during this school year as the movie had already been shown.” She also said the movie, which is not rated, remains available through the district’s licensed movie library. The 1998 Disney film portrays Bridges experiencing racist encounters while seeking an education. Directed by Euzhan Palcy and written by Toni Ann Johnson, “Ruby Bridges” earned several accolades, including a Christopher Award and a Gold Apple from the National Educational Media Network. The film was also a 1999 NAACP Image Award nominee for outstanding television movie or mini-series.
Pinellas County Schools previously faced pushback earlier year after it banned Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye” from all high schools following a parent’s complaint about the book’s rape scene. Following the ban, several students protested for the book to return to their advanced literature curriculum.
Last year, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law the Stop WOKE Act, which restricts race-inclusive teachings in schools. In January, DeSantis’ administration blocked an Advanced Placement course on African American studies from being taught in the state’s high schools. While “Ruby Bridges” is not permanently banned in the school district, the move has prompted some Black-led organizations, such as the Concerned Organization for Quality Education for Black Students, to implement a call of action to protect the teaching of Black history in schools. The organization’s efforts aim to ensure Pinellas County Schools provides quality education to Black students.
“Many from historically marginalized communities are asking whether this so-called integrated education system in Pinellas County can even serve the diverse community fairly and equitably,” Ric Davis, the organization’s president, wrote in a letter, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Goliath Davis III, a former police chief in St. Petersburg, also criticized the district’s move in an op-ed in The Weekly Challenger on Saturday.
“Isn’t it curious that the district purports to value ‘cultural competency and ‘integrity,’ encourage the celebration of Black History Month and within three months, ban a book by an award-winning Black writer and a film on the life of a 6-year-old Black girl attempting to obtain a quality education while facing death threats and racial epithets?” he wrote.
