Analogamente a quanto fatto con il verbo ‘avere’, adesso l’attenzione si sposta sul verbo ‘essere’. Anche qui, la diversità linguistica del dialetto salentino è oggetto di analisi, in quanto esistono varie forme verbali dipendenti dalla zona geografica di riferimento. Per questo studio, ricorre la Grammatica storica della lingua italiana e dei suoi dialetti (1966) del linguista G. Rolhfs. Sulla base delle sue considerazioni, propongo di seguito un elenco delle persone del presente indicativo del verbo essere e la relativa spiegazione:

1°pers. sing: suntu/sontu/sù/sò: la forma verbale è un caso di confusione. Mi spiego: se dovessimo dire che suntu/sontu derivano dalla 1° pers. sing. del verbo latino esse, che ha dato nel latino volgare *essere, dovremmo pronunciare sugnu, come nel siciliano, in quanto essa proviene sì dalla 1°pers.sing. latina che era sum. Tuttavia, la forma verbale del nostro dialetto non si origina da sum, bensì da sunt, cioè la 3° pers. plur. del verbo latino. Per questa ragione, come vedremo in seguito, la 1°pers. sing. e la 3°pers.plur. coincidono (jo suntu/sontu; iddhri suntu/sontu). Per quanto riguarda l’utilizzo delle varie forme, si può dire che suntu, con la sua corrispettiva forma abbreviata sù, si usa in tutto il Salento, fatta eccezione dei paesi limitrofi a Nardò e nel brindisino dove si utilizza la forma sontu e quella abbreviata sò che si ritrova anche in tutte le parlate del Meridione.

2°pers.sing: sinti/si: in linea generale, la forma dialettale deriva dal latino es, che probabilmente ha dato *sees nel latino volgare. Tuttavia, nel Salento si può anche osservare la forma sinti, la quale è il risultato di un adattamento su sontu. Anche per la 2° pers. sing. l’uso di si è piuttosto generalizzato, in quanto è una forma ricorrente in tutti i dialetti meridionali. La forma riadattata sinti sembra essere più rara, anche se nel neretino e nei territori di Galatone ed Aradeo è attestata (cce si scemu!/ cce sinti scemu!).

3°pers.sing: è/ete: la forma più attestata è senza dubbio è, anche per l’analogia con la lingua italiana. Tuttavia, la forma ete presuppone un piccolo chiarimento. Questa forma deriverebbe dall’antico italiano edè formatosi dal latino quid est > ched’è. Rolhfs (1966) ce ne parla in riferimento ai dialetti settentrionali toscani, ad alcuni marchigiani e al romanesco, dove la 3° pers. sing. è proprio edè. Nel dialetto salentino, si sarebbe poi avuto un suono dentale in t al posto di d ed un arretramento dell’accento, da cui la forma ète. In ogni modo, si tratta di una forma anch’essa abbastanza generalizzata in tutto il Salento.

1°pers.plur: simu: non esistono altre forme per esprimere la 1° pers. plur. Interessante, però, è sapere che la sua origine si deve al *simus volgare, proveniente a sua volta dal sumus

2° pers. plur: siti: anche per questa persona esiste una sola forma. Per quanto riguarda la sua possibile origine, si potrebbe pensare ad un antico latino volgare in *setis che sostituì la forma classica estis.

3° pers. plur: suntu/sontu/sù/so: come anticipato precedentemente, la 1° pers. sing. e la 3° pers. plur. sono uguali, così come le zone dove vengono utilizzate.

All’interno del discorso sul verbo essere, c’è da palare di un fatto curioso: l’utilizzo alla 3°pers.sing. della forma bbè/bbete. In questo caso, siamo davanti ad un fenomeno fonologico[1] che prevede l’aggiunta di un elemento non etimologico, in questo caso la consonante b, per armonizzare il suono e renderlo più facile da pronunciare. Questo raddoppiamento è presente, come vedremo anche in futuri interventi, nell’imperfetto (bbera) e nel congiuntivo (bbessa).

Una personale osservazione del nostro modo di parlare mi porta a dire che l’uso di bbè/bbete è più frequente con la negazione nu (nu bbè/bbete filu ca no mi piace; nu bbè/bbete calanteria quista; nu bbè/bbete iddhru lu problema) e quando il verbo essere è preceduto da una parola terminante in e/u o dalla congiunzione e (ce bbè beddhru; nu bbè degnu cu bbessa fijusa; ca d’energia pulita nci nnè tanta e bbè tutta utilizzabile).  La zone in cui si registra l’uso di bb è quella del Salento centrale, con Lecce e i paesi limitrofi al nord.

Ben diversa, invece, è la situazione in altre parti del Salento come Nardò, Copertino Aradeo, Galatone, Galatina, Gallipoli, Scorrano, Spongano, ecc. In queste zone si tende a pronunciare gg/ggh/ddh. Ad esempio: cce ggè? /cce gghiè? /cci ddhrè? /cce ggè successu? /cce gghiè successu? /cci ddhrè successu?

Se per la consonante b gli studi permettono una facile interpretazione puramente fonologica, lo stesso non si può dire sull’origine di gg/ggh/ddhr. Gli studi fatti da Rolhfs (1966) sono certamente fondamentali per poter capire come si siano svolti i fatti o quanto meno per poter formulare delle ipotesi. Infatti, egli osserva il ghe presente nei dialetti settentrionali della Liguria, Lombardia, Emilia e Veneto. In questi vernacoli, l’avverbio di tempo e di luogo ghe, originatosi dall’hic latino, accompagna il verbo ‘avere’ e sostituisce gli avverbi ci/vi della lingua italiana. Nonostante ciò, Rolhfs attesta anche la sua presenza in compagnia del verbo ‘essere’, con il significato equivalente all’italiano c’è . A tal proposito, riporto una frase scritta nel 1592, dell’allora sindaco di Lecce d’origine veneziana, Pietro Mocinego, il quale parlando di Lecce affermava: “Non ghe se al mondo cità più bea”[2], dove ghe >ci e se > è.

Dunque, mi verrebbe da formulare due ipotesi: che sia un lascito dei dialetti settentrionali nel Meridione o, piuttosto, si tratta di un fenomeno linguistico evolutosi in parallelo sia nei vernacoli settentrionali sia in quelli meridionali.

In riferimento alla prima ipotesi, direi che, dal punto di vista storico, precisamente intorno al 1482, la penisola salentina fu territorio di conquista da parte della Repubblica Veneziana e che, negli anni successivi, proprio per la sua importanza strategica nel Mar Adriatico e Mediterraneo si produssero numerose guerre di predominio territoriale contro i francesi che di tanto in tanto occupavano le terre italiane. In questo caso, come già espresso nel mio primo intervento sul “Vocalismo e consonantismo del dialetto salentino”, la storia è una utile alleata per poter rispondere a quelle che sono le domande e i dubbi di tipo linguistico, in quanto la formazione del lessico e le modificazioni delle parlate di un territorio possono avere come causa scatenante proprio il passato storico e le eventuali dominazioni susseguitesi nel corso dei secoli, in quanto portatrici di innovazioni e lasciti linguistici. Tuttavia, l’ipotesi storica credo che qui sia un po’ forzosa, soprattutto perché non ho prove certe di una possibile eredità linguistica diretta dei dialetti settentrionali sul salentino.

Per quanto riguarda, invece, la seconda ipotesi, la teoria di un’evoluzione in parallelo nei due vernacoli appare alquanto più probabile soprattutto se pensiamo che le forme gg/ggh/ddh sono presenti nel dialetto salentino sia alla 3° pers. sing. dell’indicativo ma anche nell’imperfetto (ggera/ gghiera/ddhera) e nel congiuntivo (ddheggia/ eggia ecc.). Secondo una ricostruzione, tali forme potrebbero provenire da hic + est latino, da cui si è avuta un’evoluzione fonetica e grafica che ha portato l’avverbio hic a trasformarsi in ghe, a perdere la sua funzione grammaticale di avverbio e unirsi al verbo essere[3]. Ciò si vede in cce gghè beddhru, dove ghe ha perso la sua funzione avverbiale. L’unico esempio dove l’avverbio si è mantenuto è nella domanda cce gghè? dove ghe ha significato di “adesso, in questo momento”, proprio come in italiano che c’è?

Anche per questa forma come già detto per quelle del leccese, da una mia osservazione posso affermare che il loro uso è più frequente con la negazione no e quando il verbo essere è preceduto da una parola che termina in e/u o congiunzione e.

Per concludere, abbiamo visto come anche il verbo ‘essere’ possiede alcune caratteristiche meritevoli di approfondimenti. Personalmente, ritengo molto importante soffermarsi a pensare sul perché e sul come della nostra lingua, in quanto essa è capace di raccontare storia, fenomeni, cause e ragioni che difficilmente riusciremmo a sapere se non ci fermassimo ad osservare.

A few aesthetic notes, first: the chevron quotations are used in Italy, though I’ve decided against capitalization aside from proper nouns, and “Samhain” is pronounced  /ˈsaʊ.wɛn/ or /ˈsaʊ.wɪn/.

There’s a handful of neologisms (and puns) in here, so below is a list of those.

ā fūnere noctis - in the dead of night, literally "at the dead of night" - an old way of mentioning midnight, which itself is known as the witching hour and the time at which things (usually living) die; it's a common time found in myths centering around ghosts and witchcraft, and considered highly ominous - the three AM time is, on the other hand, a Christian invention that is supposed to be the "inverse" of three PM which is said to be a holy hour. Food for thought!

micuē - adverb of micāre

carnillae - lump of flesh (f), reference to carnārius "one who admires a plump habit of body, a lump of flesh, Mart. 11, 100, 6", with diminutive -illa

terrēmene - from terrēre "to terrify", suffix denoting an act/means/results of acts; this would be a 3rd declension noun

excipietne - normally "-ne" would indicate a direct question, but as this is used as an indirect question, the suffix is enclitic and expresses doubt of the verb's action occuring (think "might + verb") - this would scoot the verb to the front of the sentence, but for the sake of mostly abiding by the English, I haven't moved it

exsaliet - different from "exsultāre", even if of the same root "salīre", because of the prefix "ex-" which, to borrow from words like "efficere" and "edicere" the prefix carries the connotation of "to make + verb", whereas "exsultāre" means "to spring out/forth" or "to leap out". This is one I'm not quite certain of, so if anyone has insight on this, I would appreciate it!

ace attorney: to the surprise of absolutely no one THE PHANTOM ive just always attached to the whole. danganronpa: i changed favs very often bc i had zero idea what constituted well written characters lmao i have ~eclectic tastes~ but the main character i rlly liked was touko/syo, her arc in despair sisters afairc was decently well done and her relationship with komaru was sweet, even if dr is kinda an inescapable grease fire. in hindsight, i think i also related more to her than i realized bc of her self esteem and the way her trauma/phobias seemingly blocked her from basic self care/socialization but it was really more about her never having the courage to push her own boundaries (idk how well thats shown in the game but that was my experience)

runner up: korekiyo bc i liked him a lot for longer than most othr characters but afairc my perception of him was VERY heavily based on headcanons/fanon so i doubt id like him at all on a replay. best guess is id only maybe like shuichi or something. pretty much everyone in dr is an asshole tbh i cannot emphasize enough how ass my taste used to be my ability to pick characters i like boiled down to someone telling me a character was cool and i immedaitely absorbed them
